Caroline Marton
Athlete Biography
After a heartbreaking end to her London 2012 quali䘀쐂cation campaign, Caroline Marton will have
the chance to represent her country at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Marton was disquali䘀쐂ed up
nine points with 15 seconds to go in the 䘀쐂nal London 2012 quali䘀쐂cation bout and has spent the
past four years in search of redemption of that result. Marton’s path to Rio was made slightly
easier when she was the only to contest her division at the Oceania Quali䘀쐂cation Tournament.
It will be a family a䘀䤃air for Marton at the Rio 2016 Games with her sister Carmen set to compete at
her third Olympic Games. Carmen’s partner Safwan Khalil will make his second Games appearance
while Khalil’s brother Ali will coach the team.
Marton packed up her things and moved from Melbourne to Sydney at the start of 2015 in order to
train with her sister Carmen and Safwan believing it would give her the best chance possible to
qualify for Rio. The results soon followed as she made the third round of the World Championships,
moved into the top 20 in the Olympic rankings, won Paci䘀쐂c Games gold and made the quarter-䘀쐂nals
in the tough Grand Prix series.

Safwan Khalil
Athlete Biography
Safwan Khalil will return to the Olympic fold in Rio having made his debut at the London 2012
Games. Khalil came through the repechage to make the bronze medal match in the -58kg division
where he went down 3-1 in a close encounter with Russia’s Alexey Denisenko.
With the top six ranked athletes in the world at the end of 2015 automatically qualifying for Rio,
tenth ranked Khalil just missed out on booking his Olympic ticket early. Instead Khalil went to the
Oceania Olympic Quali倀茂cation Tournament in Papua New Guinea where he convincingly defeated
Isaac Myrie of the Solomon Islands 14-0 to claim the -58kg division.
The 29-year-old will line up in Rio alongside his partner and soon-to-be triple Olympian Carmen
Marton, Carmen’s sister Caroline and Hayder Shkara. The team will be coached by Safwan’s brother
Ali.
He made history in 2011 when he became Australia’s 倀茂rst ever Universiade gold medallist in
taekwondo. At the event, which is open to university students from around the world, Khalil won
the -58kg division after defeating Iran’s Hadi Mostaan in Shenzen, China.
Khalil was born in Tripoli, Lebanon and, 倀霂eeing from war, immigrated to Australia when he was
eight-months old with his parents, two brothers and sister.

6-1 victory over New Zealand’s Rhiannon O’Neill at the Oceania Quali cation Tournament.
Having been in contention for Athens 2004, she made her Olympic debut at the Beijing 2008

Mexico. She’d previously nished on the podium at the World Championships having claimed
bronze in 2005.

Rio, and sister Caroline Marton who will make her Olympic debut at the rst Olympic Games on
South American soil. Along with fellow teammate Hayder Shkara, the team will be coached by

Marton was introduced to the sport when she was eight by her father Andrew who had trained in
Poland when growing up. She began competing on the international scene in 2000 and had plenty
of early success becoming Australia's rst female athlete to win a silver medal at a World Cup
before just missing out on quali cation for Athens 2004 as an 18-year-old.
