Welcome
Emma
The Committee has worked tirelessly to develop
a 5 day event that will provide entertainment and
family activities and most of all, a taste of Leeton’s
hospitality.
Once again the Leeton community has rallied
behind the SunRice Festival with five Ambassadors
being supported for the 2014 event.
Jane is 24 years old and has lived in Leeton all
of her life. Completing her education, Jane gained
employment in the retail sector whilst also studying
Business Administration. Currently Jane is employed
by SunRice, working in Information Services on the
Help Desk.
The commitment shown by the Festival
Committee and the sponsoring organisations for
the Ambassadors is to be commended. These
people give up their valuable time to enhance and
enrich the broader community of Leeton Shire.
I hope that you enjoy your Leeton SunRice
Festival experience and look forward to seeing you
again in 2016.

Born on the north coast,
Tayla moved to Leeton at the
age of five. Tayla has resided in
Leeton for 13 years, completing
her schooling with St Joseph’s
Primary School and St Francis
College.
Jane has various interests including a life-long
passion to care for animals, outdoor activities and
travelling.
I would like to thank SunRice for the valued
sponsorship again for the 2014 Festival; this
event would not be possible without their continued
support. Thank you to all of the local businesses
that have contributed to make this Festival the
success that it is.

Jane has chosen CanAssist as her nominated
charity. The effect of cancer is felt by the whole
community in different ways. Cancer is such a
common disease,it affects people of all ages and
their families. Funding is very important to the
person and family that are impacted by this disease.
Emma Reneker
Leeton Soldiers Club Emma is 23 years old and moved to Leeton with
her family in 2001 after having lived in a number
of different towns in NSW including Walcha and
Brewarrina due to her parents’ work.
Jane thought the SunRice Ambassador
Quest would be a great opportunity to help many
organisations and charities in Leeton. She is looking
forward to working with her committee, the SunRice
Social Club to raise money for the Leeton Community.
She went to school at St Josephs and St Francis
and completed HSC in 2008, before commencing
at Charles Sturt University in Wagga, where she
graduated on the 18 December 2013 as a teacher.
Since the start of term 2013 , Emma has worked
as a casual teacher at different schools in Leeton
and is hoping to pick up full time work in the near
future.
Tayla is currently studying
Bachelor of Middle Schooling
(K-12) at CSU Albury.
Over the years she has played a number of
different sports and currently keeps fit by going to
the gym.
Once a qualified teacher, she
endeavours to return to Leeton
and find employment with one of
the local schools.

On behalf of the Leeton SunRice Festival
Committee I would like to welcome you to the 23rd
Biennial Leeton SunRice Festival. We are pleased
that you have chosen to join us to celebrate the
importance of rice, agriculture and food in our
community.
Emma considers Leeton as “home” and feels it
is an honour to act as ambassador for the Light Up
Leeton committee who she has admired for a long
period of time. She is also looking forward to working
with Leeton Soldiers Club, where the majority of her
events will be held.
Emma has a very enthusiastic committee
behind her and she can’t wait to start fundraising.
Together with the committee she has some excellent
fundraising ideas lined up.

Leeton Early Learning Centre Julie Aulamea
Phantoms Rugby Club
Julie Aulamea was born and raised in New Zealand
with her family originating from Samoa. She is 22
years old and enjoys playing rugby, dancing and
spending quality time with her family and friends.
Two years ago she made a decision to move to
Australia to settle in Leeton, seeking a better future.
Her family followed a year later and have settled in
well in the Leeton community.
Julie is currently employed by SunRice and is
actively involved in the Phantoms Rugby Club of
which she is representing in the SunRice festival.
She and her committee are fundraising for the Rural
Fire Brigade Service, to recognise the organisation
and their volunteers for their tremendous hard work
over the years, which often goes unnoticed.
Coming from a Pacific Island background she
relates to the Leeton community well, as Leeton is
a close knit community who pull together to help
each other out.
Emily moved to Leeton in 1994 at the age of two.
The 2009 Leeton Shire Young Citizen of the year
has been an avid member of her community through
volunteering with the Leeton Youth Committee and
also a participant in the 2013 RYLA program.
Emily is currently studying her Diploma in Early
Childhood Education and currently works at Leeton
Early Learning Centre. Emily was behind the
introduction of the Early Childhood course at St
Francis College where she lobbied for the funding in
early 2007. Emily earned first place in her HSC TAFE
Course and has also completed her Certificate IV in
Training and Assessment.
Emily had no hesitation in participating in the
Ambassador Program and hopes to fundraise
for resources imperative to the development and
learning of our children of today and leaders for
tomorrow.
Emily has also chosen the MIA Branch of MS
Australia to honour her uncle who began his fight with
the disease in 1992 before losing his battle in 2009.
Emily hopes to also support the many families
around the area fighting the battle. Emily is looking
forward to the fundraising and is looking forward to
the community participation available for her many
ideas.
Emily
Julie wishes all her fellow ambassadors all the
best and hopes we can make this SunRice festival
one to remember.

Leeton’s Longest Lunch
15
www.leetonsunricefestival.com.au
Following the HUGE success from past festivals,
Leeton’s Longest Lunch is now one of the highlights
of the Festival program. It will be a family style long
lunch in Mountford Park, with guests dining on
authentic, home-cooked Italian cuisine at two long
tables. Entertainment will be provided by the very
talented Back2Basics and BYO is permitted.
Ingredients for the lunch will be sourced from the
local region. This event will bring the community
together, offer something new and exciting for
Leeton and focus on the traditions that our Italian
community have brought to the region, as well as the
range of local produce that is available.

This year we will have something different to
entertain and educate locals and visitors alike.
Alan Hocking well known chain saw sculptor will
be demonstrating his incredible talent of taking a
log of raw timber that most of us would see as just
fuel for the fire. But Alan can see birds, animals or
even a piece of furniture. With a roar, his chain saw
comes to life and with a few deft strokes a piece of
art takes shape. During the day these articles will
be available for purchase. He will also be running a
short workshop on chainsaw sculpting. This will be
enough to put you on the road to a new artistic hobby
and perhaps a new source of income. Make sure you
don’t miss this event. Go up to Allen and say hello,

Leeton Art Deco Features
35 buildings have been listed on the Australian
Institute of Architects’ register of significant 20th
century buildings, including buildings such as the
landmark Roxy Theatre which has been screening
movies since 1930. The centerpieces of the town’s
Art Deco features are the water towers which were
designed by noted architect Walter Burley Griffin,
who also designed the layout of the town centre.
Also heritage listed is the Historic Hydro, a Spanish
Mission-style building built in 1919 to house the
Managers of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area.
A Heritage Trails booklet containing information
on individual buildings and a map is available at the
Leeton Visitor Information Centre.
