NEWSLETTER STUDENT NEWS FROM BALRANALD CENTRAL SCHOOL INSIDE ___________ Term 2, 2016 Calendar (page 5) ___________ Notes to be returned to the school’s front office: Primary Athletics @ Tooleybuc Due 22 July PRIMARY ATHLETICS AT TOOLEYBUC Friday, 29th July WHOLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY WEDNESDAY 29 JUNE 12.00 PM 20 JUNE 2016 ISSUE 14 NSW STATE TRAINING AWARDS RIVERINA REGION CONGRATULATIONS TEARRA CHARLES Recently Balranald Central School had two finalists in the Riverina NSW State Training Awards. Both Samantha Renfrey and Tearra Charles were nominated in the School Based Trainee category for their School Based Traineeship with the Local Far West Health Service. Both girls complete their on-the-job training at the Balranald Multi-Purpose Service (Hospital). Congratulations to Tearra Charles with a Certificate III in Health Services – Nursing Assistance for winning the 2016 School Based Apprentice/Trainee of the year for the RIVERINA REGION. Tearra is a proud Muthi Muthi Woman, whose people are from the Balranald area. The SBAT has allowed her confidence in the workplace, as well as organisation skills to complete the competencies. Tearra has developed her job skills and has matured since commencing her traineeship. She moved from Melbourne to Balranald and recommenced Year 11 at BCS because she had heard about the SBAT program and had always had the goal of getting into nursing. Tearra is very thankful for the opportunities she has been given and believes she chose wisely when she decided to move as the SBAT has impacted her life dramatically in a positive way. Samantha Renfrey was also a finalist on the night. She is completing a Certificate III in Health Service – Allied Health Assistance. She works with a variety of Health Care professionals, including a Dietician, Occupational Therapist and Speech Pathologist. Samantha has had to learn to work with a variety of people. Her advice to anyone given the opportunity to undertake a traineeship is to do it. It will either confirm your dreams or allow you to adjust your direction. Balranald Central School is proud of the effort of both the girls and would like to thank the staff at the Balranald Multi-purpose Service for their weekly support to the trainees. Balranald Central School currently has four SBATS working at the Balranald Multi-Purpose Service. Tearra now has the opportunity to interview for the NSW award sometime next month. We wish Tearra all the best and once again congratulations. The children travelled around the Zoo in a carriage pulled by an old draft horse named Blue. They saw many wild animals from around the world which are in open and large environments and had the opportunity to pat and feed some of those animals. Students and staff were overwhelmed to see animals that nearly became extinct and the zoo also has a breeding program to help save endangered species. Students saw many different types of species of fauna and animals from many other countries around the world. Vanessa the supervisor implemented the program for the students with educational activities regarding information on each of the animals. The Year 3/4 class would like to thank Miss Woods and Tom Connellen for their assistance and a huge thank you to Mr Flagg for recommending the Altina Wildlife Park. Below are some extracts from the students work: At the start we looked at the deer. There were seven different breeds of deer. We travelled on a horse drawn cart around the zoo. We saw many different animals from around the world. The excursion was cool. By Elouise Hines The first animal we saw was the reindeer. The reindeers had coats of different colours. They were brown, dark brown and white. When we got there we had to go on a horse and cart to see all the animals. By Kyarah Hines The crocodiles were great to see up close and they eat meat. The pigs love mud and the baby goats were cute and loved the bread that we gave to them. The buffalos are very big and the emus have long necks. The excursion was great. By Peter Smithers We came up to the first lot of animals and they were deer and there were three lots of different species. One species was spotted, the other species was a plain white and the last species were plain brown. There was one called Bambie. The excursion was very educational and we enjoyed every moment of the excursion. By Grace Morton We saw two different breeds of giraffes and one mum and dad had a baby. The baby giraffe was born on Easter Day last year. Then in the next pen there were two different species of giraffes and one species had darker skin and the other giraffe had light skin. We then saw the Hyenas and they were trained by their keeper to sit and roll over, climb and beg for food. The excursion was awesome to see and next year there will be more different species of animals at Altina Zoo to see. By Harry Ross 3 Issue 14 – Term 2 – Week 9 Monday, 20 June 2016 Our tour guide Vanessa told as a few rules before entering the wagon. When we got on Blue’s cart he started to move and the first thing we saw were deer. Vanessa told us that if a deer has antlers it is a boy but if it doesn’t have antlers it is a girl, some of the deer we saw had beautiful spots scattered around their body. The next thing we saw were some geese and the geese were in a muddy area with only a little green paddock. The geese were pretty hostile when we went past. By Maximiliano Ugarte First we saw the ducks and the geese and then next we saw the deers and there were three species of deer. We saw the giraffes and there were two species of giraffes. One had a dark coat and the other one had a light coat. The giraffes had very long necks. By Prue Harper We had a look at all the animals at the zoo. Vanessa showed us the animals and told us all about the history of the lions and the Ginny Fowls. The care-taker man told us how the lions are trained to be respectful by getting them up on to the fences. He would open their mouths and he checked their teeth to see if they are healthy. The care-taker said if they are healthy they are in good condition. It was a fun and exciting day. On the way home we discussed what our favourite animal was at the zoo. By Ryan Jackson We left Balranald Central School at 7:37am and arrived at the Altina Zoo 10:15am. When we got there l saw a cart on a horse out of nowhere and there were deers and some of them had spots. We had a little bite of food and there were lots of peacocks around us. Then we went to the zebras and they looked cool. By Zanthy Kiernan If a zebra has a black nose it would normally mean its body is black with white stripes. If it has a white nose it would have white stripes. You would not normally see a white zebra with black stripes.
