JOHN C. RACANELLI CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER NATIONAL AQUARIUM Since the National Aquarium’s birth in 1981, we have been instrumental in bringing visitors and prosperity to the region and raising awareness of the challenges facing our environment, here in the Chesapeake Bay and around the world. We know that understanding what lies beneath the water’s surface and forging a deeper connection to the ocean can inspire people to protect it. Simply put, we care for what we know. The National Aquarium is uniquely positioned to connect our audiences to the ocean that sustains us. We are committed to protecting all life—including our own—that is inspired by these connections. We share the wonder, mystery and awe of the world’s water with those we engage, and help them to convey that to others. Connecting. Protecting. Sharing. All interconnected and instilling in those with whom we engage a sense of hope for the long-term health and well-being of our blue planet. The Aquarium is committed—through taking action and inspiring action—to changing the way humanity cares for the ocean. Our planet’s life-support system depends on us succeeding, and we will use every tool available to do this essential work. We don’t do this alone, though. It is through the dedication and generosity of our network of supporters that we can achieve great things. I hope you’ll agree with that sentiment as you read through a selection of our accomplishments from the last year, and that you’ll join us as we look forward to our bright future. Sincerely, John C. Racanelli LEADERSHIP TEAM John C. Racanelli President, Chief Executive Officer Bruce Hoffberger Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer Dale Schmidt Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer Eric Schwaab Senior Vice President, Chief Conservation Officer Kathleen Sher Senior Vice President, External Affairs Marisa Wigglesworth Senior Vice President, Chief Philanthropy Officer Current as of December 31, 2014 3 4 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Connecting people to the natural world We believe knowledge leads to caring. NATIONAL AQUARIUM 118,416 students visited the National Aquarium with their schools in 2014. 756,761 guests engaged with Visitor Programs staff through Discovery Carts, Animal Encounters, presentations and engaging one-on-one interactions. The newly formed National Aquarium Society is an elite group of donors who demonstrate their commitment to ocean advocacy by supporting the National Aquarium with generous annual gifts. Using the Chesapeake Bay as a Classroom Ten AquaPartners schools with 1,124 elementary school students participated in school-based and field programs that illuminate local ecosystems and opportunities for environmental stewardship. The three-year program brings National Aquarium educators into classrooms and students from in and around Baltimore on trips to Carrie Murray Nature Center, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine and Sandy Point State Park for hands-on experiences in and along the water. 5 6 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Thanks to a generous gift from the Dana DiCarlo and Scott Plank Family Foundation and their urban development company War Horse, the National Aquarium launched a sustainable seafood program that willl help consumers to understand seafood options and establish partnerships with watermen, chefs, retailers and more. Aquarium staff traveled to Annapolis to take part in the 2014 Environmental Summit. In addition to showcasing native animals, the team discussed important issues related to animal health and water quality in Maryland. Photo courtesty of MD-DNR/Jay Fleming 54 interns from 11 states participated in the Aquarium’s internship program in 2014. NATIONAL AQUARIUM A Real Reef Journey Madison Freeman, a high school junior, held a sea star at the Henry Hall Program’s Coral Reef Ecology trip. On the weeklong visit to the Florida Keys, the group snorkeled, explored the water by boat and visited a sea turtle hospital to gain real-world perspective on life in a thriving coral reef. Established in 1982, the Henry Hall Endowment Fund provides free educational opportunities to Baltimore City Public School students who are interested in marine and environmental science. In 2014, the program served 130 students. As part of Baltimore’s Star-Spangled Spectacular, the National Aquarium hosted National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ship Okeanos Explorer. Visitors were able to take advantage of public ship tours and special programming. At our World Oceans Day Celebration, a local artist led a community art project, designing a large-scale model of Calypso, the Aquarium’s 500-pound green sea turtle. Attendees used more than 4,000 plastic bags to cover the structure, while learning about the harmful effects of plastics in our waterways. The sculpture was later displayed at Artscape. Board Reunion 7 8 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Protecting the world’s special aquatic spaces We are committed to saving animals and their habitats. NATIONAL AQUARIUM Blade arrived at the National Aquarium at the end of 2013, the victim of an apparent boat strike. While healing from injuries to his carapace, the Kemp’s ridley developed infections that kept him in treatment until his release in Ocean City, Maryland, in October. The Aquarium is the only organization permitted to respond to live-stranded marine mammals and sea turtles along 4,360 miles of coastline in Maryland. Unique experiences, like shark tagging and osprey banding trips, contribute to research that helps scientists understand animal behavior. 9 10 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 IN 2014, WE: Restored 9.65 acres Removed 131,486 pieces of debris In 2014, the National Aquarium hosted its first-ever BioBlitz at the Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center and Campus. A BioBlitz is an all-day event where scientists, students, teachers, families and other volunteers work together to locate, identify and record as many living organisms as they can find. Thirty volunteers and 70 participants documented 170 species. Planted 68,731 native trees and shrubs Instead of selling bottled water, the National Aquarium now offers water bottle filling stations throughout the Aquarium, making it easier than ever for guests to make smart choices. NATIONAL AQUARIUM Biohuts in Bloom 65 response and rehabilitation events were documented by the National Aquarium Animal Rescue team in 2014. The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Waterfront Park features native gardens certified by the National Wildlife Federation as wildlife habitats. In 2014, eight Biohuts were installed in the water alongside the National Aquarium. These structures help to bring back lost aquatic habitat to the waters of the Inner Harbor, providing a home for filter feeders, food and refuge for numerous species and, in turn, food for larger predatory fish. In partnership with Ecocean and Biohabitats, the Biohuts are placed in the water and then monitored by Aquarium staff to assess what is living in the Harbor, as well as the growth of oyster spat. This information is then shared with the Maryland Biodiversity Project to assist in research that aims to catalog all the living things of Maryland. 11 12 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Constellation, an Exelon company, bolstered the Aquarium’s conservation education programs and its Chesapeake Bay Initiative with a $1 million grant that provides science-based opportunities for guests, volunteers and students over the next five years. This includes sponsoring the Aquarium’s on-site Discovery Carts, which use hands-on experiences to connect guests with the environment. The Aquarium facilities are also getting an eco-friendly makeover with $3.7 million in energy and water conservation upgrades designed to prevent the creation of more than 12,300 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Aquarium staff worked with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to outfit Aquarium puffins with GPS units to determine ideal device placement. The results helped in the study of foraging patterns in wild puffins. NATIONAL AQUARIUM Sharing the wonder and mystery of the ocean We inspire people to take action. 13 14 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 119,880 service hours were contributed by volunteers and interns in 2014. Masonville Living seashore planting 1,000 people at 16 Baltimore City libraries saw Aquarium on Wheels students perform their original play. NATIONAL AQUARIUM Program animals, which include Rio the constrictor and Margaret the hyacinth macaw, engaged with 95,254 guests and participated in 18 media segments. More than 1.3 million people visited the Aquarium last year, with Programs like Half-Price Friday Nights, Dollar Days, Pay What You Want Day and Maryland Mornings providing opportunities for our communities to connect with our mission. In the creation of Living Seashore, more than 3,000 square feet of space were added to the National Aquarium experience. Speakers Inspire in Lecture Series Ed Lyman was one of nine esteemed speakers at the Marjorie Lynn Bank Lecture Series, which brings experts in ocean issues to the Aquarium to share their knowledge with our engaged communities. In 2014, we partnered with NOAA’s Office of Marine Sanctuaries and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. 15 16 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Being thoughtful for the future We value our role as an economic driver.
