THE NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE What if a Hurricane hits the Gulf Oil Spill? By Matt Foley Bacteria can reproduce sexually. With a number of forecasters predicting an above average hurricane season, the inevitable question looms of what will happen if a powerful hurricane hits the area where tens of thousands of barrels of crude oil are spilling into the Gulf? The competition consists of three components: a written test, pre-trip inspection and road course. The Illinois Professional Truck Driving Championships‟ winners are invited to compete at National Truck Driving Championships, which is being held this year in Columbus, Ohio. John Skiba, who was competing for the second consecutive year; and first timers Earl Hahn and Michael Shipinski did Custom proud competing in the 5-Axle class. Friends, family and co-workers also showed to support all three of our competitors. Along with the drivers, the ITA also requests volunteers to help coordinate, set Salvador Arredondo up and judge the competition. This also includes tractors, trailers and straight trucks loaned to the competition. The fleet of tractors and trailers presented Jose Cornejo this year was indicative of the down economy as many pieces of competitor‟s Danny Duenez equipment were not in top shape. Tim Sienko, Jeff Howard and the maintenance team were instrumental in presenting tractors and trailers that left the Eberardo Farias audience impressed. In passing, one audience member was noted as saying, Brett Fortier “look at Custom and CDN‟s wheels, their equipment looks brand new and look Frank V. Funari at the rust on [a competitor‟s] equipment over there.” Randy Thomas, Associate Director of the ITA agreed, “Custom and CDN have some of the most imRoman Ganziano pressive equipment out here!” Custom and CDN also had a strong volunteer Petra Gumieniak turnout led by Tony Crespo and Mark Dannhauser, Senior Team Leaders of Juan Hermosillo Safety. In addition, Tony, a member of the IPTDC committee encouraged Robert Imhoff those who were able to give up their Saturday to help make the competition a success. Matt Foley, Jason Montgomery, CDN Dispatch and Pat Kupiszewski, Hassan Khan CDN Safety volunteered and were assigned to judge pre-trip inspection and Eric Krueger the road course. For most of us we don‟t think what a coat or a jacket means in the long winter season, but to those who live less fortunate lives than most of us a good warm coat can make all the difference in the world. This year the Police Athletic League of the Illinois State Crime Commission has honored the efforts or Custom‟s very own Mr. Perry Mandera (In conjunction working along with the Chicago Bear‟s Brian Urlacher and other members of The Custom Companies team) for his participation in the “ Clothes For Kids” coat drive by presenting him with the 2010 Bishop Sheil Award. This award named after Bishop Bernard Sheil and given to those who most represent the Bishop commitment to help those of Chicago who are in the greatest need. Through Mr. Mandera‟s efforts when Chicago‟s weather turns to bitter cold there will be those that are a little warmer. When asked for a quote for this article Mr. Perry Mandera said: “I learned a very long time ago “Don‟t count your blessings, share them” and that‟s why we help people in need.” The Illinois State Crime Commission/Police Athletic League of Illinois works diligently with community leaders to help provide each citizen a safe place to live. Every year they find our community leaders that embody the spirit of Bishop Sheil and honor them with the award in his name. The namesake of this award Bishop Bernard Sheil never became an archbishop, but he did become something possibly greater - one of the most loved and respected Christian leaders in the United States. Bishop Sheil was founder of the Catholic Youth Organization establishing annual boxing tournaments that appealed to thousands of working class youths, representing all ethnic groups. He eventually produced an international traveling team and a number of boxing Olympians. All participants received free instruction, equipment and medical care with winners receiving a college education. The great success of the boxing program led to more athletic programs and social agencies. He founded Sheil House, a settlement in the African American community and similar neighborhood centers for Italians, Puerto Ricans, and Navajo Indians. Through all of Bishop Sheil's social activism ran a deep commitment to interracial justice. Best wishes to Erick (CDN Safety) and Marilyn Lucena as they tied the knot on June 5, 2010. We hope you enjoy many happy years together! SORRY, WE OOPS’ed!! Our apologies to TCC Drive Mike Duncan, who is in his tenth year of service. We have to thank the work of engineers and scientists for enabling us to harness renewable energy available to us and make it useful. Solar, wind, water, geothermal and bio-fuel are the five (5) main forms of renewable energy. Here are some interesting facts regarding them: September Birthdays If it could be properly harnessed, enough sunlight falls on the earth in just one hour to meet the world‟s energy demands for a whole year. Durwin Ponton 9/2 The hot underground steam and water from geothermal energy can be tapped and brought to the surface and used to generate electricity. Steve Laue 9/4 Matt Foley 9/5 A world record was set in 1990 when a solar-powered aircraft flew across the USA in 21 stages, using no fuel at all. Ruben Calvo 9/7 Armando Ramirez 9/7 One wind turbine (windmill) can produce enough electricity to power up to 300 homes. Shirley Bandaly 9/8 Alonso Blanco 9/9 The largest wind turbine in the world is located in Hawaii and stands 20 stories tall and has blades the length of a football field. Alfredo Calero 9/9 An average wind speed of just 14 mph is needed to convert wind energy into electricity. Taulafoga Faalave 9/9 Seferino Arias 9/10 Tony Beltrano 9/10 Marie Huff 9/10 Those clever old Romans not only gave us the modern drainage system and many of our roads, they were also among the first to use geothermal energy to heat houses. Peter Grau 9/11 Jason Narancich 9/11 About 9% of U.S. electricity was generated from renewable sources in 2008. Raul Gallardo 9/13 Despite all of the damage we have caused the environment most of it is reversible. We can restore habitats, clean rivers, replant forests, etc.; however, these activities do not relieve the worst symptoms of the damage. We still have to fix the source of these problems and renewable energy is one way of greatly helping our planet. Bruce Lenau 9/13 Jeff Dayton 9/14 Michael Kelso 9/14 Matt Kloss 9/15 Arturo Abasta 9/16 Water is the most commonly used renewable energy source, providing enough power to meet the needs of 28.3 million people. What if a Hurricane hits the Gulf Oil Spill?... Continued Martin Bolanos 9/17 80 feet are created, meaning potentially devastating and long lasting consequences. At a minimum, should the slick be broken apart, ocean currents that exist from Florida up the eastern seaboard will capture this water, meaning that the slick would then stretch all the way from the gulf to Cape Cod, affecting all beaches on the Atlantic Coast. William Ehrl 9/20 Billy Hudson 9/22 Fausto Rodriguez 9/22 Should the storm approach from the southeast, the slick will move towards Texas and Mexico and since there is considerably more water between the slick and land in the western direction, the impact should be subdued. While the hurricane may hamper humanitarian cleanup efforts, the natural effect of the storm could actually be positive. If the oil is pushed to the west, away from the coast, bacteria will then begin to naturally bio-degrade the oil, which will be done more rapidly over a dispersed area than the current concentrated area. Walt Gustafson 9/25 Cesar Aguirre 9/26 Clete Janik 9/26 Rob Catanese 9/28 Dubravko Stiplosek 9/28 Fortunately the strongest hurricanes typically do not arrive until August so there is some degree of hope that the leak may be contained at that point and that substantive cleanup efforts may be underway. Another positive is that hurricanes need warm water to maintain their vigor and so far this year the tem- Alfonso Lopez 9/29 Miguel Zaragoza 9/29 Wojciech Glowacki 9/30 David Smith 9/30 perature in the Atlantic Ocean is cooler than normal, which should dissipate many of the storms . I enjoy meeting people and going to different places. I like being able to move around continually and not always in the same place. In the first place, trucking means to me...helping people get items from place to place. I kind of have a feeling the future of transportation will hold…good because America needs trucks to transport their goods. As you get older driving is…a little harder and slower. There are more people driving these days and it seems to take longer going from one place to the next. Driving in the Chicago area is different because…there are way too many people, cars and bikes. There is always construction going on, too. The strangest delivery/pick up I ever did…was delivering floor mats to a horse stable. Even in grammar school I learned transportation…has many ways of transporting materials from place to place; not only by trucks on the road, but by water (ocean) and by air. I entered the Illinois Professional Truck Driving Championship (IPTDC) because…I wanted to prove to myself what I could do and also wasn‟t afraid to show off my skills. I feel that I did okay in the IPTDC. As a whole, Custom drivers do well in the IPTDC because…they are experienced and work well as a team. Next year when/if I try the IPTDC again, what I will do differently is…practice more. Each year I get more relaxed and know more about what‟s happening at the event. As Perry Mandera used to say…make it happen. My father had good advice about driving…pay attention to everything and other drivers. Keep your mind on the road. I don‟t know…too much but I do know how to drive a truck. I remember last year…a lot of customers went out of business. I remember my first year of driving…I was 16 and driving a meat truck and I remember the long hours. I also remember my weekly stops to Rockford and how I liked the open road. New technologies mean to me…making driving and communication easier. Smaller details of driving are…there are no small details to being a safe driver. The truck is almost 30,000 moving pounds empty. You also have to be alert about everything. Customers love…me because I‟m honest and don‟t fool around. Also, I try to keep a neat appearance. This year it will fall on September 6, 2010. The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. However, it was not until 1887 that Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day on official holiday. The Central Labour Union wanted to make “a day off for the working people” who have contributed to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of summer. A time to get together for one last barbecue, which by the way we have listed some great recipes for in this issue. For football fans it marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. However, for most of us, you guessed it, we see it as a day off. So enjoy your day off and take a minute to pay tribute to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength and leadership-the American worker. Illinois' 76,000 farms cover more than 28 million acres -- nearly 80 percent of the state's total land area. Illinois is not only the nation‟s leading pumpkin producer, but also its leading pumpkin processor. Libby's plants 5,000 acres of Dickinson Select pumpkins each year in and around Morton, Illinois. Morton, where 80 percent of the world's canned pumpkin is packed at the Libby's factory, is known as the "Pumpkin Capital of the World." The town hosts an annual Pumpkin Festival to celebrate the start of the pumpkin canning season. Illinois has 1,118 miles of navigable waterways that provide the state with a direct link between the Atlantic Ocean (through the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway) and the Gulf of Mexico. In the February / March 2010 edition I discussed the Illinois hunter safety requirements and the Illinois hunter education program that the state offers for free. Now that your youth hunter has completed this course it is time to take advantage of the free Illinois Youth Pheasant Hunt offered by the state. The Illinois Youth Pheasant Hunt is a special one day hunt during the controlled pheasant hunting season for young hunters ages ten through fifteen. Young hunters must have an Apprentice Hunting License or valid Illinois Hunting or Sportsmen's License on the IYPH date. Resident young hunters born on or after January 1, 1980 must have successfully completed the free Hunter Education Course provided by the Department of Natural Resources to obtain a Hunting or Sportsmen's License. Each young hunter MUST be accompanied by a non-hunting supervisory adult during the hunt. The supervisory adult must be at least 18 years of age. And the best part, there are no fees assessed for the Illinois Youth Pheasant Hunt! There are 17 controlled hunting sites statewide that are participating in the IYPH this year. Some of the regional sites are: Des Plaines Fish and Wildlife Area – Wilmington, IL Chain O‟Lakes State Park – Spring Grove, IL Kankakee River State Park – Bourbonnais, IL You can visit http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/programs/ controlled_hunt/youth.htm for more information and to apply for a permit. It was on September 4, 2002 that President Bush proclaimed September 11, 2002 as Patriot Day. Patriot Day is the day we remember the 2,993 killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked. The hijackers deliberately flew three of the planes into two important buildings, the Pentagon in Washington DC and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We will not forget the events of that terrible morning nor will we forget how Americans responded with heroism and courage. The loss of life and damage that these hijackings caused formed the biggest act of terrorism ever on United States soil. Nearly 3000 people died in the attacks and the economic impact was immense. The attacks have greatly increased attention to national security in the United States. This has had huge implications for United States national and international politics. This is particularly true for the relationships between the United States and Islamic countries in the Middle East. This day the flag should be flown at halfmast as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11, 2001. Many people also observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Even if it is not at 8:46 AM, please remember at some point in the day to take a moment to remember those we have lost and honor those who inspired us with their heroic sacrifices. SPORT’S CORNER by Jeff Guthman Well here we are with so many great sport stories to talk about. I would not be the Chicago fan that I am if I did not lead with a shout out to the Blackhawks; not only for winning Lord Stanley‟s Cup, but for doing it the way that they did, with determination and poise. That shows what Hockey (and for that matter any sport) what it can be and should be. Also with equal respect to the Las Angeles Lakers for their great championship season. Congratulations to the Lakers and the Blackhawks. You take that and set it against the circus that LeBron James made going to Miami. I would never begrudge anybody either going somewhere for the money or for the greater potential of winning a championship. But to do it in so callus of a manner and showing a great city like Cleveland so little respect. Maybe I am making to bold of an assumption that Wade, Bosh and James had already worked it all out for the three of them to wind up with the Heat it would sure appear that that is what happened. Then to drag his hometown team (that had done nothing but adorn him king of the city) through what he did, shows what is wrong with sports and with the high priced athletes of today. I will find myself rooting for them not to achieve the championship that so many people have already bestowed on the Heat. On to more upbeat sports happenings. The arrival of Julius Peppers to a Bears team that seems to be putting it all together brings hope and anticipation to the upcoming NFL season. With a retooled running attack and a second year of Jay Cutler the offense should be among the best in the NFL. I would expect that Cutler‟s second year would be more of what we thought that we would see next year. With an offense coach in Mike Martz he should excel to be the great quarterback that he is. That with a more then solid defense should put us over the top in our very loaded division. With my deepest regrets to all the fine Cub fans out there that will need to wait for a retooled team in 2011 the white hot White Sox go into the all star break in first place of the American league central and show no signs of slowing down. If this new kid Hudson can hold his own in the starting pitching rotation they will play their way into the playoffs. They do not need him to replace Jake Peavey, only to hold down the bottom part of the staff. It would seem to me that the key would be Freddy Garcia (who was pegged to be the 5th starter) to play like the Freddy Garcia of old and get the wins that we thought Peavy would get for the White Sox. An injury-free Carlos Quentin looking as if he could have an MVP second part of the season and Beckhamn starting to look solid at second base it is all coming together for the White Sox. With all the comings and goings in sports, let us not forget or lose sight of the signing of power forward Carlos Boozer by the Bulls, that he is a better fit for the young team than any of the free agents that were available. With the coming of age of Joakim Noah and the leagues newest superstar Derrick Rose, I think as a Chicago fan I will have a team that I can believe in. In addition I am a firm believer that when you are on top you stay on top until someone knocks you off. So it would seem that the best team in the NBA would be the Los Angeles Lakers who everybody seems to forget, has the best active player in the NBA. When sitting sown, you are greeted by a bubbly server who is more than happy to give you her most valued recommendation to start with, Sloppy Fries: Thick wedge-cut fries smothered in homemade, medal-worthy chili, mounds of hot melted cheddar and fresh succulent onions. This could be a meal in itself, but no! Upon looking at the heaps of savory meat surrounding you in gourmet burgers that would put fast food chains to shame, you think “Well, why not…” Never have I seen such a vast array of unique and individually interesting combinations on a menu - With the ever popular Chili Cheeseburger, to the more exotic Guacamole Grilled Zucchini Burger. The Grilled Tomato, Mozzarella and Roasted Garlic Clove burger is my personal recommendation to any burger lover looking to break out of their mundane burger rut. The tomatoes are seasoned to perfection, the melting mozzarella drips and mixes seamlessly with the potent garlic cloves. The flavors of the garnishes further compliment the quality of their 8 ounce Angus beef ground chuck and their fresh, out-of-the-oven Firehouse bun! After gorging yourself on the Guacamole Grilled Jalapeno Cheeseburger (you FINALLY decided on), Sloppy Fries, and with your Stella Artois the server approaches the table with a proposition… “Dessert?” With such items on the menu as Campfire S‟mores and Hot Apple Cranberry Cobbler, a tear comes to your eye as you suddenly realize you just cannot eat any more – so you get the s‟mores. The Buffalo Fire Department is truly a casual masterpiece with a high-end twist. Friendly and cordial staff, distinctive and chic atmosphere AND grade-A ingredients - all backed by the knowledge and ingenuity of award-winning Chef Michael Schafer make the Buffalo Fire Department an extraordinary dining experience.
