USER’S GUIDE
WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION
Novell welcomes you to this GroupWise User’s Guide to Mobile Devices. Ask yourself this
®
®
question: When you’re away from the office, is it better to accomplish tasks remotely or
still have them waiting for you when you return? Without question, networking and mobile
communication technologies are opening up new ways to collaborate from virtually
anywhere to get things done, be more responsive, save time and achieve professional
and personal priorities.
As reported in the article “Use Your PDA or Smartphone with GroupWise” featured in
the Spring 2004 issue of GroupWise Advisor magazine, people today want to “manage their
e-mail, calendar, tasks and contacts on their mobile device, and to be able to respond
quickly and accurately ‘anywhere, anytime, anyplace.’” Novell GroupWise connects you to
people and to the information you need through a single access point for integrated e-mail,
instant messaging, calendaring and scheduling, as well as task, contact and document
management. And through synchronization solutions from Novell development partners
featured in this user’s guide, you can access resources with your handheld device of choice,
be it a “converged” cell phone, known as a “SmartPhone,” or a handheld PDA device like a
PalmPilot*, Pocket PC or RIM* BlackBerry*.
The purpose of this GroupWise User’s Guide to Mobile Devices is to provide you with
information on:
• Whether your handheld device supports synchronization with GroupWise
• Two primary methods for synchronizing GroupWise data with handheld devices
• Independent Novell development partners, the synchronization features that each
provides, and contact information to learn more
LET US KNOW HOW WE CAN HELP
We appreciate your interest in GroupWise and in this user’s guide to mobile devices.
Of course, no such guide can answer all your questions. For more information about
GroupWise and the GroupWise synchronization solutions offered by our development
partners, please visit: www.novell.com/groupwise

The Need for Secure,
Reliable Data Synchronization
Business mobility means retrieving and sending information and communicating from
virtually anywhere, any time to get work done. Today’s mobile workforce requires reliable, secure access to Novell GroupWise e-mail, calendar, contact and task information

via notebook PC, “SmartPhone,” PDA or other handheld device.
By teaming with development partners like Consilient, Intellisync, Messaging
Architects, Nexic, Notify Technology, Omni, Quartz Development and Toffa International, Novell equips organizations large and small with proven solutions that synchronize GroupWise data with “wired” (synchronization cradle) and “wireless” (“over-theair”) handheld devices. These solutions integrate into an organization’s network and
with several mobile-device operating systems, including Palm OS*, Windows* Mobile,
RIM and Symbian*.

Intellisync Handheld Edition version 5.3 supports Palm OS 5.0 devices for calendar, contacts and tasks. Devices running Palm OS 5.0
no longer have a standard e-mail client. As such, Intellisync Handheld Edition supports e-mail on Palm OS 5.0 devices using the legacy
Palm e-mail client only, and is limited to reading e-mail only (replying to or creating new e-mail does not work on the legacy client
running on Palm OS 5.0).
E-mail synchronization is supported for Novell GroupWise. Edits to attachments on the device are not synchronized back to the PC.
GroupWise 6.x e-mail Cabinet folder mapping is not supported. E-mail attachment support is not available for GroupWise. Complete
e-mail attachment support is available only for Pocket PC/Windows CE devices (Palm OS handhelds can forward attachments, but not
create, open, or edit them).

Nexic Synchronis* for GroupWise offers a rich,
robust set of collaboration tools for handheld
devices. It was designed to include many features
specific to GroupWise, like retracting sent messages,
GroupWise specific folders and scheduling others
for appointments, tasks or notes.
When comparing the features of Nexic
Synchronis to other solutions, it quickly becomes
apparent that Nexic Synchronis is the only solution
that supports such a wide range of GroupWise
features. Most other solutions limit what they
support in order to create a base set of features
that work with the common e-mail products.
address book or contacts application on the
handheld device, as well as GroupWise e-mail and
calendaring items with the native Nexic Synchronis
Client. Due to the extreme limitations and the
lack of GroupWise related features in the assorted
default mail, calendar, task and note applications
that ship with the devices, the current version of
Nexic Synchronis will not sync with any default
application except the Address Book/Contacts
applications. Support for the default mail, calendar,
task and note applications has been added to
the next release for users who want to use
these applications.

step further than most sync products in that when
it displays a list of items that are about to be
synchronized, each item in the list has a check
box associated with it. You can review the list of
potential items and uncheck the items that may
have inadvertently been included in the query
results. You can even cancel the sync if you
desire. Giving you the final say regarding what
data is to be synchronized was a primary design
goal for Nexic Synchronis.
The Nexic Synchronis Client interface was designed
to use GroupWise icons, dialogs, message prompts
and terminology wherever possible. Menu items
are also arranged in similar locations as they are
in the GroupWise Windows client. Maintaining
familiarity with the GroupWise Windows client
was a top priority. The primary design goal was to
have a user who was familiar with the GroupWise
Windows client be able to use the Nexic Synchronis
Client without any formal training. The fact that
the majority of Nexic employees worked on
GroupWise at Novell is evident in the design
and user interface of Nexic Synchronis.
If you’re familiar with the GroupWise remote
mode concepts, then you already understand how
the Nexic Synchronis Client works. When you
delete an item, you have the option to delete it
from the handheld database, the online mailbox
or both. You can also retract deleted items that

and esoteric links to vertical products.
For example, SIMBIT, based in Ottawa, Canada,
has developed a SyncML client that synchronizes
the address list stored on a cell phone SIM card.
Using SyncWiseEnterprise, this information can
be shared with a GroupWise address book. As for
esoteric links to vertical products, a SyncML client
over IP, it can synchronize the GroupWise data.
SyncWiseEnterprise synchronizes the GroupWise
data to the device’s native applications. This allows
you to access data when a connection to GroupWise
is unavailable (such as in a subway, on a plane,
etc.) and also provides full integration with the
device’s other native applications. For example,
a telephone number stored in a GroupWise address
