FINAL DAYS OF SCHOOL – TDSS
There are approximately 8 days of classes left before exams begin on June 17th. We encourage all students to complete missing assignments and to seriously prepare for their exam period. The draw to
skip classes during the nice warm days of spring is strong and could have a detrimental effect on students’ academic success so we ask students to reconsider if temptation strikes. Earning all credits during the school year is a student’s responsibility. Any student who requires help can seek out their teacher, Ms. Brazeau, Ms. Gaudaur, Ms. Bolger or any other person that they are comfortable with. Our students’ success is everyone’s wish.
HONOR WALK
All of our graduates and their families are asked to arrive at the arbour on Wednesday, June 15 th for
4:30 so that we can walk up Algonquin Avenue, down Wilfred and Masinikijek, then left onto Kateri

Surprise Concert at Kiwetin School
Nelly Furtado takes selfies with Mr. Perry’s Grade 6 class at Kiwetin on May 30, 2016
Kiwetin School students were treated to a private concert with Canadian singer Nelly Furtado on May 30 after the
Grade 6 class made a significant impression on her.
In February, Furtado performed O Canada at the NBA All Star game along with Native American flutist Tony Duncan. Critics panned the unusual arrangement and it quickly got ugly on social media. Grade 6 teacher, Mr. Craig
Perry uses current events as a platform for discussion and writing exercises in his class and after reading about the
story and watching the performance, the grade six students felt Furtado was bullied and unfairly targeted, so they
wrote her letters of support. She got the letters recently and contacted Mr. Perry about coming to visit.
Apache World Champion hoop dancer, Tony Duncan, who is also a children's book author, was also moved to
make the trip from Arizona just to come to our school. He also donated copies of his books to our library. Guitarist
Sean Kelly, who plays in her band and was formerly with Canadian rock band Helix, also backed her up. In an interesting aside, Kelly is from Temiscamingue, QC and is familiar with our area. The singer’s bodyguard and actor
Karl Campbell (Hyena Road), also attended.
Furtado sang a few songs including her hit I’m Like a Bird and she and Tony performed their unique version of O
Canada at the grade 6's request to cheers and applause. Duncan also treated the audience to a display of his hoop
dancing skills in full regalia.
The visit was a complete surprise. Only Mr. Perry and Principal, Briar Giroux knew about it. Staff were asked not to
share on social media until the group left which was respected by everyone, so the focus of the day would be on the
students.
Furtado and her entourage chatted, took pictures, played catch and basketball with the students all afternoon. I
think it’s safe to say there are a few new Nelly Furtado fans at Kiwetin!

2016 RockWalk Park Summer Student TOUR GUIDE
Funded under “Canada Summer Jobs”, the Tour Guide position will run from Monday, July 4, 2016
through Friday, August 26, 2016.
The student employed will work 35 hours per week, for 8 weeks, (total of 280 hours) and will be paid at a
rate of $11.25/hr.
The student must be registered as attending a secondary school or other institution of higher learning in
2015-16, and be returning to a secondary, post-secondary, vocational or technical program, or CEGEP as
of September, 2016.
RockWalk Park and Arboretum is a not-for-profit, incorporated charity, located on the grounds of Northern College at Haileybury (City of Temiskaming Shores) Ontario. Its primary function is to display a collection of about 175 Canadian massive geological exhibits to the general public, as well as a collection of trees
that are zoned to grow in the Haileybury area. The Park also has a wheelchair accessible pathway throughout the 5 acre facility, that is used as an exercise area by local residents.
The student employed will be expected to welcome all visitors to the Park, and to provide private tours of
the Park to all who are interested. (Extensive literature on the exhibits is available for memorization and
reference.) The student must also be aware of other Geological and Earth Science attractions within the
Temiskaming Region, and be capable of promoting them to tourists.
The student will be involved in all daily maintenance of the Park that involves hand management. (The
site is mowed by professional operators.)
As such, the student to be hired MUST be adept at INITIATING conversation with a wide range of tourists, possibly from beyond Canada. The student would ideally have a background or interest in Geology
and the Earth Sciences. Students of Tourism, Museum Management, or Stage Performance might also find
this position attractive.
Employment and Social Development Canada, the agency that operates the “Canada Summer Jobs” program, has identified this position to be “ideally” filled by an ABORIGINAL YOUTH. However, should
such a student not be available, the position would be open to ALL students who are returning to studies
in the fall.

Housing Department notice
Housing Loan Program
Housing is the foundation of strong, healthy and vibrant communities. That’s why our aim is the help make
affordable, quality homes a reality for our members.
Whether you want to make individual home ownership easier or provide non-profit housing for those in
need, RBC has a range of financing solutions to help make it happen.
RBC has a history of helping First Nations with housing. They were the first to introduce a home financing
program that did not require a federal government guarantee. The program helps make it easier for you to
obtain a mortgage:
RBC will work closely with your Housing Authority to develop a program specifically designed for your
community. If you do not currently have a Housing Authority in place, we can advise you on setting
one up.
Now that the community has entered the program, you can begin the mortgage application process at
the nearest RBC branch.
Unlike other programs, there are no restrictions on new construction, so you can build the home of your
dreams.
A minimum down payment of 2.5% of the purchase price or build cost will be required.
The maximum amortization period of each loan is 25 years, and fixed interest rates for terms of six
months to five year is now offered.
This program is designed to assist you in accessing loans for single family home properties (private housing).
No ministerial loan guarantee is required. For more information, please contact Darlene (Darlo) at the telephone number below.
