Boone Electric Cooperative’s Monthly Newsletter January 2015 Travel to D.C. with Us College Scholarship Applications Available T his June, four high school juniors from across Boone County can walk the same paths George Washington walked, stand in awe at the thousands of gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery and visit the Lincoln Memorial. The students will see these landmarks, plus others, as part of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. Boone Electric Cooperative sponsors students to attend the week-long, all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. Our four students will join nearly 90 other Missouri juniors on the trip, plus students from states across the country. The trip includes stops at George Washington’s Mount Vernon home and farm, a morning at Arlington National Cemetery and a day tour of the Smithsonian Institute, plus stops at all the national monuments, Ford’s Theater and a visit with their elected officials on Capitol Hill. To apply, high school juniors should visit their school counselor, or log onto www.BooneElectric. coop. Applications are due March 6. A group of judges will narrow the applications to 10 finalists, who are required to attend a finals competition at the Cooperative on April 9. Four of those students will travel to Washington, D.C. The remaining six will receive a $500 college scholarship. Applications for 13 college scholarships awarded by the Boone Electric Community Trust are now available. A graduating senior from the nine public high schools, plus four at-large students, will each win a $2,000 scholarship. Seniors in public school should visit their guidance counselor for an application, or visit www.BooneElectric.coop. Return applications to the guidance counselor. At-large candidates, including home-school students, private-school students and current college students, should visit www.BooneElectric.coop for an application. Energy Tip of the Month They are out of sight, but don’t forget about your air ducts. Taking care of them can save money and energy. Check ducts for air leaks. Take care of minor sealing jobs with heat-approved tape, especially in attics and in vented crawl spaces. Call an expert for major ductwork repairs. Sophomore Leaders Also Apply High school sophomores have a leadership opportunity on a state level. Boone Electric sends six sophomores to Jefferson City in July for a threeday visit to the state capital through the Cooperative Youth Conference & Leadership Experience (CYCLE). Students learn about state government, tour the Missouri State Capitol, including the Senate and House of Representative chambers, attend keynote presentations and make friends from across Missouri. School guidance counselors have the CYCLE applications at each area school. Or, log onto www.BooneElectric.coop. CYCLE applications are due March 6.
