annual report - Waveny Care Center
2012 ANNUAL REPORT Chairman’s Letter Dear Friends: Thank you for your ongoing support of Waveny Care Network throughout an incredibly exciting year. From employing the leadership of an exceptional new chief executive officer, to our significant growth in community-based services and home healthcare, 2012 saw the beginnings of many pivotal transitions for our organization. financial assistance program while hitting the million dollar mark since the event’s inception. Guided always by our mission to provide a comprehensive continuum of healthcare and the highest quality of compassionate person-centered care, we began implementation of a strategic plan to help chart the course for Waveny over the years to come. This included the formation of a board committee to develop a long-term plan for New Canaan Inn, and a focused review of our organization’s branding with the generous assistance of global advertising firm Saatchi and Saatchi. Through the generosity of our donors, commitment of our staff, and dedication of our devoted volunteers, Waveny continues to thrive. Please know how much we appreciate and value your belief in our mission and your commitment to our organization. From a financial standpoint, this year was particularly notable. Backed by more top sponsors than ever before, our 10th annual Swinging for Seniors event raised an unprecedented amount of funds for our Also, given the very attractive state of capital markets, we refinanced Waveny’s long term debt and borrowed the funds required to finance renovations to the second floor of the Care Center. Most sincerely, Jay B. Twombly Chairman, Waveny Care Network T his year marked a decade for our Swinging for Seniors Golf & Tennis Outing, which to date, has raised over a million dollars – a major milestone worthy of a celebration! All proceeds from this annual outing are directed to Waveny’s financial assistance program and used to support patients and residents who cannot afford the full cost of their care at Waveny Care Center, The Village, New Canaan Inn and our Adult Day Program. Our gratitude is extended to golf co-chairs Judy Bentley, Charlie Parker and James Slattery, tennis co-chairs Alice Parker and Sharon Stevenson, and our dedicated raffle coordinator Julianne Grace. We are tremendously proud and indebted to our Swinging for Seniors committee members for their enthusiasm, steadfast commitment and hard work, and to our extraordinary event volunteers for helping to make the day a monumental success. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors and supporters. 2012 Top Sponsors Platinum Sponsor Louise B. We give our sincere thanks to each event sponsor and supporter for their loyal patronage and outstanding support of Waveny Care Network. Annual Appeal T his year’s annual appeal focuses on achieving a vital technology upgrade to our decade-old digital network infrastructure. The cornerstone of this project will be the creation of a virtual environment. By migrating our four conventional, at-capacity data servers onto a single virtual server, we will greatly enhance user convenience, enable data recovery and resource allocation, and promote a green environment by increasing energy efficiency and decreasing our reliance on hardware. INCLUDES Virtual Server To replace our 9 year-old, at-capacity physical servers Upgraded Email Platform To replace our decade-old version of Outlook Advanced Email Archiving System Most importantly – and making the need for reliable, high-performance technology at Waveny absolutely critical – this virtual environment will help us to improve our effectiveness in providing quality care and facilitate a smooth transition to an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. To meet and exceed healthcare regulations Virtual Desktops To replace outdated desktop computer hardware Upgraded Microsoft Office Suite To migrate from Office 2000 to Office 2010 Upgraded OS To migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7 Staff Training ADVANTAGES Maximum Workplace Productivity • Long Product Lifetime • Remote Web Access for Users • Energy Efficient, “Green” Initiative • Snapshot & Disaster Recovery • Convenient Resource Allocation • Economic “Turn-Key” Update n l • An “This technology upgrade will enable Waveny to keep up with current trends in healthcare, improve current services for our residents, and prepare for the future.” To facilitate this important technological transition uA A As always, we give special thanks to our Development Committee for championing another successful annual appeal and we are most grateful to all appeal donors for their support throughout the years. l A pp e Our Grantors C ollaboration between The Fairfield County Community Foundation, the donor-advised Barbara Benton Davis Fund, and the Rangeley Capital Community Fund at the New Canaan Community Foundation resulted in a bountiful grant to support the scholarship program for participants of Waveny’s Adult Day Program who cannot afford the full cost of day services. Monies from this grant have enabled many of our longterm participants to continue using our services and attend the same number of days per week as they have in the past - especially our veterans. Benefitting just as much as the participants are family caregivers who can regain the personal time they need to work, run a family household or simply relax. Delivering upon a continuing commitment to offer the “latest and greatest” in technology to those we serve, Waveny Care Network recently installed a series of wireless access points (WAPs) to establish a Wi-Fi network throughout the 3 Farm Road campus. This comprehensive installation was made possible by generous funding from the Jeniam Foundation. Available to all staff, patients, residents, family members and visitors, Waveny’s campuswide Wi-Fi capabilities enable the use of wireless devices and convenient access to popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Skype to better stay in touch with friends and family. Funds received through the MLE Foundation helped to cover the cost of contemporary television viewing in the Care Center. In an effort to improve television reception, viewing and programming choices for our nursing home residents and skilled nursing patients, Waveny finished a complete upgrade to its television system. The New Canaan Community Foundation awarded us with generous funding along with donor advised monies from the Rein Advised Fund to finance a complete upgrade of our existing security using state-of-the-art equipment throughout the Network. Our goal is to maintain an open and welcoming atmosphere while continuing to ensure the safety, security, convenience, comfort and flexibility of all who depend on us. Additionally, we would like to thank the New Canaan Community Foundation and the Berkeley Fund for their generous grant in support of our organization. The experience of dining is an important and recurrent part of our residents’ day, and is greatly influenced by their environment’s atmosphere. The New Canaan Sewing Group provided funding to replace existing curtains with new drapes in our Special Care Unit’s multipurpose dining room, which serves our most physically and cognitively challenged residents and patients. Continuing its annual funding of Waveny, the Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging, Inc. provided monies for a State-sponsored aide position to work with Adult Day participants with Alzheimer’s disease. emergency pull-call system by remote control. These necklace and/or wrist bracelet devices enable residents to activate the system from any location within the building to summon immediate assistance. The WorkPlace, Inc. awarded grant monies that enabled Waveny to hold a number of training programs designed to provide job enrichment, hone leadership skills and facilitate active participation in professional growth and development. Training programs included Centered Care for the Person with Dementia: Recognizing and Responding to Distress, Wound Care Certification and a Certified Nursing Assistant Leadership program. Driven by our mission to continue to offer the latest state-of-the-art equipment available to those we serve, monies received from the Newcomers Club of New Canaan were used to purchase a recumbent cross trainer for our rehabilitation therapy program. This recumbent bike is a preferred piece of rehabilitation equipment that helps to ensure safe and effective treatment of individuals across a wide range of ability levels. The Young Women’s League of New Canaan awarded a grant enabling us to expand our Snoezelen program, which offers a therapeutic option that focuses directly on the sensory functions of individuals with dementia and memory loss. This funding facilitated continued growth in the frequency of sessions offered, number of participants, and involvement from our families and volunteers. We are extremely grateful for a gift awarded to Waveny from the Rotary Club of New Canaan used to purchase wireless “Panic Buttons” that activate our existing First County Bank Foundation awarded us monies used to purchase laptop computers and software for our newly launched Home Healthcare Program. Our Home Healthcare staff made a strategic decision to utilize electronic medical records from the very start so that client medical information would be readily available on a mobile basis. This technology will continue to assist us in moving forward toward an Electronic Medical Record environment. “The generosity of these charitable organizations allows us to consistently deliver the highest quality of care to all whom we serve.” Our Contributors O ur gratitude is extended to those listed below for gifts and pledges received in support of Waveny Care Network between January 1 and December 31, 2012. Young Yummie Tummie Zumbachs F ollowing the success of the past three years’ events, we held our fourth annual mixed-paddle tournament fundraiser in support of Waveny’s not-for-profit network of residences, programs and services. Doubling in size since the event’s inception, this year’s event featured 32 teams and 64 players playing at four site locations. We are absolutely delighted that this event has captured public interest and expanded exponentially over the past four years. This year we were able to attract local recreational players as well as top ranked APTA professionals in coming together to Paddle for a Purpose! This outing’s continued growth and success is due in large part to the efforts made by event committee members Alice Parker and Sharon Stevenson in securing our paddle sites, player participants, sponsors, prizes, and food and beverages. Paddle for a Purpose Consolidated Financial Statement Interest Expense 1% Depreciation 6% Medicare 10% Medicaid 21% Private Pay & Insurance 69% Patient & Resident Days Medicare beneficiaries and Medicaid recipients accounted for 31% of the Network’s average daily census. W aveny continues its commitment to provide the highest quality of care for older adults in New Canaan and the surrounding communities. Reflecting this commitment, Waveny experienced a 5.5% increase in fiscal 2012 patient service revenue over the prior year, mainly due to increases in occupancy in both the Care Center and The Village. Total days in the Care Center increased by 1,142 and 1,747 in The Village. During fiscal 2012, the Network launched its Home Healthcare service, which received its Medicare certification on April 3, 2012. Home Care sustained an operating deficit of ($445,184), 84% of the Network’s 2012 operating loss. Operating loss on the existing units in 2012 was ($85,445) compared to ($602,548) in fiscal 2011. Home Care is expected to achieve break even by the end of fiscal 2013. As a result of both the Federal and State governments’ reimbursement rates failing to keep up with inflation, and given Waveny Care Center’s mission to serve older adults without regard to their source of payment, patient and revenue services were significantly offset ($3,541,902) by the amount of reimbursement that the Medicare and Medicaid programs discount their payments to us. Fortunately, the cost of this uncompensated care is partially offset by the continued generosity and support from our benefactors: Through the Annual Appeal, Swinging for Seniors, other grants and contributions, the Network received a total of $708,000 in philanthropy in fiscal 2012. Reflecting our ongoing commitment to ensure quality care through a skilled and experienced staff, wages and benefits combined for 68% of our total operating expenses, an increase of 7.2% over fiscal 2011. Salaries and Benefits Medical Supplies, Drugs, Food & Other 25% Salaries, Wages & Benefits for Employees 68% Expenses Reflecting our continued investment in high quality care, labor costs accounted for 68% of our expenses. increased $880,120 from fiscal 2011 with $517,962 (59%) of the increase attributable to the new Home Care initiative. Our “medical supplies, drugs, food, and other” expense category increased 5.6% over the previous fiscal year, which was in large part due to increases in the provider tax, food and fuel costs. We continue to see dramatic declines in our reliance on outside nursing services. Outside nursing costs in 2012 were $26,936 compared to $180,063 in fiscal 2011. This represents our continued commitment to hire and retain the best and brightest at competitive compensation packages while maintaining an industry-leading resident to staff ratio. As of September 30, 2012, the Network’s endowment holdings were $10,476,800, a 13.2% increase in fiscal 2012. During fiscal 2012 the Network retired $420,800 in long-term debt, as of September 30, 2012 the balance of the long-term debt was $4,955,936. In December 2012, the Network refinanced its tax-exempt variable bond financing to a ten year fixed rate tax-exempt bond creating budget certainty over the remaining term of the debt. The Network sustained an operating deficit ($530,629) in fiscal 2012. Once again this was in large part due to the Home Care start up ($445,184). We expect to return to operational profitability in fiscal 2013. We continue to honor our mission to those in our care by providing the highest quality of care through the most efficient means possible, while at the same time acting as responsible stewards of the contributions made to us by our loyal benefactors. Healthcare as we know it is rapidly changing and its shifts and transitions will have a major impact on all of us. We read about mergers and acquisitions, bankruptcies and foreclosures and realize that both State and Federal government reimbursements continue to diminish for healthcare providers. At the same time the baby boomers have begun to turn 65 at a rate of 10,000 each day. As the healthcare world shifts to home and community based services, Waveny Care Network has responded to meet the needs of those who require our assistance in non-traditional ways. We now serve many clients in their homes through Waveny’s home healthcare and geriatric care management, as well as an array of new companion, homemaker and private duty services. Delivering upon our mission, we will continue to grow and diversify to meet the needs of our community now and in the future, while maintaining the quality expected from the Waveny name. Over the past several months we have achieved 100% occupancy at New Canaan Inn and developed a healthy waiting list. We have also centralized our admissions department in order to better serve anyone who may require help or assistance provided throughout Waveny’s continuum of care. Our quality continues to be outstanding and Waveny Care Center was recently named one of the top nursing homes in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Waveny Care Network is truly a jewel in our community with its comprehensive continuum of care and wide array of facility, community and outpatient based services. Not only do we have tremendous partnerships and affiliations with quality programs like Meals on Wheels and Staying Put in New Canaan, but we are fortunate to count on the service of more than 400 volunteers who are a wonderful support to our organization. This is truly an exciting time for us and I thank everyone for their generosity, dedication, loyalty, friendship and continued support. Most sincerely, William C.
