TIDBITS AND TRIVIA * The Navy’s bell-bottom trousers are commonly believed to be introduced in 1817 to permit the men to roll them above the knee when washing down the decks and to make it easier to remove them in a hurry when forced to abandon ship or washed overboard. In addition the trousers may be used as a life preserver by knotting the legs and swinging them over your head to fill the legs with air. * The Coast Guard is smaller than the New York City Police Department. * The Coast Guard seizes 169 pounds of marijuana and 306 pounds of cocaine worth $9,589,000.00 every day. * The Marine Corps motto. “Semper Fidelis,” was adopted in 1883 as the official motto. It’s Latin for Always Faithful. * The US military bases around the world don’t accept pennies as a currency because they are “too heavy and are not cost-effective to ship.” * The US military has a secret, nearly silent type of Velcro, which reduces the ripping noise by over 95%. * The United States Department of Defense is the largest employer in the world at 3.2 million people. * During WWI parrots were kept in the Eiffel Tower to warn of approaching aircraft. They could detect planes long before they came into the range of human lookouts. * During WWII coconut milk was used as blood plasma. * The US Interstate Highway System requires that one mile motorway in every five has to be straight so that these sections can be used as airstrips in time of war. * Kleenex tissues were actually developed for use as gasmask filters during WWI. * Male US Marines in uniform cannot carry an umbrella. * To conserve metal during WWII, the movie Oscars were made from wood. * During the 19th century soldiers who had died in battle had their teeth pulled out to be used as dentures by other people. * Less than 28% of Americans between the ages of 17-23 are qualified for military service, that’s only about 1-in-4. * The Navy boasts more than 300 ships and more than 4,000 operational aircraft. * Navy SEAL stands for Sea, Air, and Land because they’re trained to handle themselves well in all these situations. The Navy Seals make up less than 1% of all United States Navy personnel. Despite their small numbers they make a huge strategic impact on every operation of which they are a part. * SPAM was rationed to our troops during World War II as well as the Russian forces. The U.S. military consumed over 150 million pounds and the Russians consumed 100 million pounds of the tasty pink canned meat. * SPAM is especially popular in the state of Hawaii, where residents have the highest per capita consumption in the United States. It’s even on the McDonald’s menu. Since we’re chatting about SPAM, I thought it was only fitting to include my mother’s SPAM pizza burger recipe. This was a staple at the birthday parties I attended as a child. I must admit, I recently made them and they are still just as delicious as I remembered. However, I didn’t tell my children they were made with SPAM because I knew they’d turn their noses up. After they polished off a few burgers, I confessed and they were shocked! Whip them up and tell me what you think. Do you remember the old style can with the key and you twisted the can open? That inevitably left one with a sliced finger. Just FYI…the new SPAM museum is set to open in downtown Austin the spring of 2016. That sounds like a fun day trip for us! Lorraine’s Pizza Burgers 1 can Spam ground up 2 tsp oregano 1 lb hamburger ground and drained ½ lb American cheese chopped 1 tsp salt (optional) 2 cups spaghetti sauce 1 tsp sage Mix and spread on a hamburger bun and broil until the desired crispiness is achieved.
