When a child connects the dots on an activity page, the action
brings together many separate points, revealing a single, unified
When Bill Vukich headed out for a morning of ice fishing on Big Sturgeon Lake in January of 2009,
he had no idea his heart would soon connect him to the many friends of St. Luke’s Foundation whose
generosity made it possible to add a new Cath Lab at St. Luke’s.
Bill was taking a 98-year-old friend spear fishing that day. After a couple
hours, the men reached their limit and headed back to Bill’s garage to clean
their catch. It was while lifting “the big one,” a 12-pound Northern, that Bill
started experiencing hot flashes. Not feeling well, he had his wife call 911.
The next hour and a half was a whirlwind of connections as the severity
of his situation became clear. He was treated first by EMTs from Side Lake
and French Lake Township. Next came the Chisholm ambulance, which transported him far enough to
meet a Hibbing ambulance, which was equipped with a defibrillator. By the time he reached the hospital in
Hibbing, Bill could hardly breathe.
Bill was airlifted to St. Luke’s and rushed to the Cath Lab. Dr. Lee Giorgi determined
Bill had a clogged artery and inserted a stent to open it. “Dr. Giorgi, everybody, treated
me so well,” Bill said. “Everything was fantastic.”
Bill shares his story publicly now, including at
St. Luke’s 14th Annual EMS Recognition Event in April
2009, hoping others make the connection that certain symptoms could
be warning signs of heart problems. “People try to deny it could happen to
them,” said Bill. “I really want to help people realize it could.”

Education is a key element of the St. Luke’s Foundation mission. It allows us to connect the knowledge
and experience of St. Luke’s staff with the needs of the greater community. We also support the continuing
education of our medical professionals by sponsoring conferences that bring in outside experts. Three of our
on-going initiatives are highlighted below.
Our Medical Milestones luncheon series educates the community on
current health issues. The luncheons are open to the public and feature physicians
and health care professionals from St. Luke’s. Topics in 2009 included Hormone
Replacement Therapy; Heat, Stress, Biomechanics and the Marathon Run – Is 26 Miles
Too Far?; and Dietary & Lifestyle Habits for Healthy Living.
The topic, Women’s Health Issues: Gender DOES Matter, brought together
physicians and other medical professionals for St. Luke’s fifth annual Regional
Congress on Women’s Health. The conference was funded in part by the Foundation’s Lundberg
Memorial Lecture Series. Established in 1983 by the family of Kay R. Lundberg, MD, it honors the former
anesthesiologist by focusing on education and awareness of controversial topics in medicine. It’s one of the
many education programs funded through restricted gift funds, which you can read more about on page 6.
In appreciation of the critically important work of regional first responders, St. Luke’s sponsors an
Annual EMS Recognition Event, including a half-day education program. The
Foundation helps make it possible for more than 200 EMS professionals to attend
free of charge and earn continuing education credits. Among the speakers at the
2009 event was Bill Vukich, whose story is highlighted on page 1.

In life, Muriel Whiteside was the granddaughter of a timber and mining pioneer, and a generous benefactor
of numerous charities, including St. Luke’s Foundation. In death, her legacy continues to be written each day.
It was Muriel’s generosity and vision – leaving a 50-year trust bequest – that created the Whiteside
Institute for Clinical Research in 1996. The Whiteside Institute, a collaborative program of the University of
Minnesota Medical School Duluth and St. Luke’s Hospital, Clinics
and Foundation, supports patient-oriented clinical research with
special emphasis in the areas of cancer, lung and heart disease.
St. Luke’s Foundation has been privileged to connect Muriel’s tremendous gift with numerous important
research projects. For instance, an ongoing study to facilitate early detection of pancreas cancer is nearing
publication stage. Through this research a new technique was developed for extracting proteins from pancreas
fluid. A study to determine the molecular characteristics of bacterial samples
from St. Luke’s patients with methicillin-resistant Staphlococcus aureas (MRSA)
pneumonia will help to understand this disease and assist in improving patient
treatment. Meanwhile, studies of breast cancer cell markers using tissue samples
from anonymous St. Luke’s patients will help researchers learn more about the
characteristics of various types of breast cancer.
In 2009, at St. Luke’s, the Whiteside Institute assisted with 15 original research studies on topics
such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, healthy behaviors, chronic disease, health care access, technology
and improvement of patient care. In addition, 52 ongoing clinical trials were conducted involving cancer
patients. At year’s end, 16 people from our community were actively being treated for cancer, and 171 others
were continuing in long-term follow-up care. Clinical studies were also carried out in the specialty areas of
Cardiology, Endocrinology, Pulmonology and Rheumatology.
St. Luke’s Foundation, drawing on the Whiteside Charitable Trust and the expertise within the
Whiteside Institute, connects with additional funding sources, such as the St. Luke’s Cancer Shoot-Out,
the Sand Lake Shuffle and generous individual donors, to make this important research possible.

Our signature event, the Circle of Light, is
a celebration of
St. Luke’s. Funds
are raised each
year through a
dinner, silent and live auctions for a patient
care project initiative. In 2009, we dedicated
those funds to supplement the building of
a third Cardiac Cath Lab. Additionally, we
recognized outstanding supporters in three
categories, Physician, Employee and Friend:

Hearts Celebrity Bonspiel
curling tournament brings an
abundance of laughter and
generous proceeds for our
cardiac and cancer patients.
A group of friends started the Cancer ShootOut in 2001 as a way
to support another
friend, Liz Taylor,
in her fight against
breast cancer. Since
2002, it has been held
in her memory. Proceeds fund cancer-related
programs at St. Luke’s.
The Touched by Breast Cancer Golf Classic
continues to grow each
year. First held in 2002,
the golf classic, dinner
and silent auction takes
place each June at
Nemadji Golf Course in Superior to raise
money for St. Luke’s Breast Center.

The inaugural Pink Tie cocktail
and hors d’oeuvres party took
place at the Black Water
Lounge in October 2009 as part
of Breast Cancer Awareness
Month.
The annual Women Rock event is a day
dedicated to education, pampering and
fun, with
money raised

are fighting breast cancer through St. Luke’s
Breast Center.
Tracy’s Night was held in memory of Tracy
Wright-Sperling, a young
Solon Springs teacher, wife
and mother who lost her
fight with breast cancer.
Her friends and family
gathered for a special
evening to raise money for
breast cancer awareness and to benefit
St. Luke’s Breast Center.
Each year the Superior Chapter of the Red Hat
Society, also known as the Red Hat Red Hot
Mamas Chapter #39569, sponsors a fall golf
outing. “Queen Mom” Ruth Dalbac and her
co-chairs organize a 9-hole
women’s scramble with
proceeds aiding local cancer
patients with wigs and other
personal care items.
The staff at Younkers Hair & Nail Salon
volunteered their
time for a full day
for Cuts for a Cure,
providing hair cuts,
manicures, pedicures
and facials. All
proceeds benefitted
St. Luke’s Breast Center.

Bowling to Beat Breast Cancer is organized
each year by breast cancer
survivor, Barb Hoag. The
tournament raises money
to purchase “Chicken
Soup for the Breast
Cancer Survivor’s Soul” books given to

Dedicated to
Dale Marshall was a dedicated employee of the Housekeeping department for
more than 40 years. To know Dale was to appreciate him and the way he was
always willing to lend a hand and share his insightful advice.
“Take a look at that floor, what do you think of that shine?” was one of his
favorite lines, along with “What about those Yankees?”

Dale took his project work seriously and never failed to make his end result
shine, according to his colleagues. He passed away unexpectedly last July. It is
our honor to help Dale’s memory continue to shine by dedicating this annual
report to him.
