From Our Chair & President
Dear Friends,
Mary C. Werner
CHAIR
I
n 2013, the year before America’s very first community foundation turned 100, The
Toledo Community Foundation celebrated its 40th anniversary.
An ongoing combination of donor generosity and wise stewardship made those four decades
a period of remarkable growth for the Foundation. In 2013, we reached a milestone in assets, topping the $200 million mark for the first time ever. Our resources for funding worthy
causes are now more than 200 times what they were the year we began — truly a legacy of
growing gifts!
From those assets, in 2013 the Foundation granted more than $15.4 million to causes dear
to the hearts of our donors. Many of these grant recipients are right here in Northwest Ohio
— but, as two of our donors describe on page six of this report, the Foundation also facilitates
gifts to recipients around the globe.
Keith Burwell
PRESIDENT
E
This combination of global reach with local service demonstrates how the Foundation’s
administrative capabilities have grown along with its assets. Today, the Foundation can
transform even the most complex donor assets — including real estate and businesses
(even a TV station!) — into philanthropic gifts. A story on page seven highlights how Foundation resources can simplify charitable giving, making it much more rewarding for donors.
Our 40th anniversary also marked a shift away from a strictly responsive orientation to grant
making. Foundation leadership has identified education success and economic opportunity
as major community concerns for which proactive grant making can have significant impact.
The Foundation now has two new funds and a new community resource, Aspire, to advance
progress in these areas. As described on page five, together they will provide both assets and
input for area nonprofits, particularly those serving our children.
It is with deep gratitude that we acknowledge not only our 2013 supporters, but also the
many thousands who have donated time, talent and funds to the Foundation since 1973.
Their unparalleled generosity has created what is now the largest charitable grant maker
in Northwest Ohio. As you page through this report, we invite you to learn more about the
Foundation, and consider the many ways you and your family could play a part in this vital
community resource for the future.

of Foundation-
supported service to area youth
I
t all began with a Christmas dinner for 102 rough-and-tumble
newsboys in 1892.
Realizing that those struggling boys needed much more than a holiday meal, John Gunckel solicited support from community leaders
and went on to help thousands of area youngsters at what became
the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo. Eighty years after that first generous
act, the Clubs entered a new era of community partnership with support from the Toledo Community Foundation.
“The Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo was among our very first grant recipients,” noted Foundation President, Keith Burwell. “Over the past
40 years, nearly a million Foundation dollars have supported the
Clubs’ mission of helping kids reach their full potential.”
processes and data to drive accountability and results among the
many initiatives already underway in the city. We believe we can help
enhance the collective impact of the many groups at work on behalf
of the children of Lucas County to bring long-lasting change.”
“The Foundation’s investment in our Clubs has paid real human dividends,” said Wehrmeister, noting that he himself was a former Boys
& Girls Clubs member. “Ninety-six percent of our kids are on free or
subsidized school lunches, and their family circumstances are often
challenging — so there is much work yet to be done. We look forward
to playing a role in Aspire as our relationship with the Foundation
continues.”
L
Continuing the legacy of business community leadership, founding
TCF board member Sam Carson began the partnership between the
Foundation and the Clubs. Carson family donor advised funds have
supported capital improvements, helped establish the Clubs’ Goal
Setters program, and assisted with college expenses for 30 Clubs’
alums. When the Clubs sought to expand their community partnerships in the mid 1990s, the Foundation again played a role.
Clubs and Toledo Public Schools: Better Together
“While developing new strategic initiatives, the Clubs’ governing board
realized that Toledo Public Schools and our Clubs were the two oldest institutions serving kids in our city,” said Clubs’ Executive Director
Dave Wehrmeister. “With the vision of then School Superintendent
Eugene Sanders, we began our new full service Club in Sherman
Elementary — and Carson family funds helped us establish a Club in
Marshall Elementary.
Boys & Girls Clubs’ Power Hour
As part of the 2013 strategic planning process, the Foun-
“We now have three in-school Boys & Girls Clubs in neighborhoods
where we’re needed most, supporting what kids are doing during classroom hours,” Wehrmeister noted. “Goal Setters and our Power Hour
homework completion program not only help kids achieve, but also
provide character-building experiences as older kids mentor the younger in a fun and caring environment. Toledo Community Foundation
resources have done much to make this progress possible.”
dation’s Board of Trustees identified education success
New partnerships for even greater impact
dress these leading issues: the Community Education
In coming years, the Foundation will support organizations like the
Boys & Girls Clubs in a significant new way. Aspire, a major strategic partnership to help Toledo’s children develop from cradle to career, brings together leaders of business, education and community
groups in strategic collaborations much like that of the Clubs and
Toledo Public Schools.
One such business leader is Al Stroucken, Chairman and CEO of
global glass container maker Owens-Illinois, Inc. and Chair of the
Aspire Board of Managers. “Aspire is using continuous improvement
and economic opportunity as two major areas of focus.
Strategies and approaches will be continually adapted
with respect to the region’s needs in order to create a
better community for the future.
As a result, two endowed funds have been created to adFund and Community Economic Opportunities Fund.

Kiriyanthan and Thresiamma Jacob
Two hearts, two homes,
two funds
N
early 50 years ago, Kiriyanthan Jacob graduated with an engineering degree from the
University of Michigan and left for his homeland, India,
to find a bride.
The adventure concluded in his wedding to Thresiamma,
herself a recent graduate from medical school. Together,
they returned to make a new home in Northwest Ohio.
Two careers, two children, and twelve grandchildren
later, the Jacobs began to consider ways they could use
their estate to help others. They wanted to provide for
community needs here — and they had a deep, heartfelt
commitment to something special in India.
“Years ago, we visited an institution near my hometown
that served the mentally ill,” said Dr. Jacob. “We decided
to construct a new rehab center there, which was completed in 2009.” Dr. Jacob, a psychiatrist, explained:
“Their services are badly needed, because mental
problems are still very taboo in India. They receive no
government or church funds, so private donations are
essential.”
When their attorney learned of their interest in continuing to provide for the mental health center, he advised
the Jacobs each establish a Legacy Fund with the Toledo Community Foundation. A Legacy Fund is created
while the donor is living, but has no assets until a “trigger event,” usually a death, occurs.
6
6
“Government restrictions make donating to overseas
charities difficult,” Mr. Jacob observed. “The Foundation has the capacity to properly vet the recipients of
our gifts, and to make sure all government requirements
are met.”
The Jacobs also like that their Legacy Funds bring
ongoing blessings to others in both countries.
“Rather than making a one-time gift, a Foundation
endowment will provide funds to the charities we
choose for years to come,” said Mr. Jacob. “Working
with the Toledo Community Foundation made that
possible.”

Ken and Jean
Lovejoy
Giving
that just
makes
sense
G
iving — and having solid information on which to base
it — matters to Ken and Jean Lovejoy.
“We’re both data-driven people,” said Jean, describing their approach to philanthropy. Both graduates of The University of Toledo,
Ken went into engineering and Jean into pharmacy — “so it goes
with our training.”
Not surprisingly, then, their annual charitable giving decisions used
to be stressful. “We’d look at a folder full of appeals and try to decide which ones to support. We were giving under time pressure,
in a very scattered way.”
Things changed when the Lovejoys established their donor advised
fund with the Toledo Community Foundation in 2011. “Before, our
donations were a mile wide and an inch deep,” said Ken. “Now, we
evaluate our annual plan and submit a single donation to the Toledo Community Foundation, then assess where the funds should
go over the next several months.”
“It’s more enjoyable to give this way — and we can use the Foundation’s website,” said Jean. “The Foundation vets each organization
listed, and the facts they provide are invaluable.”
In 2012, Ken and Jean again turned to the Foundation to establish
a Legacy Fund. A portion of the fund will ultimately go to the UT
Colleges of Engineering and Pharmacy, with the balance to other
area organizations.
“Education has done much for us, and helping others to benefit
from an education is a priority,” said Ken. “We recognize that estate
planning objectives and priorities can change, so the flexibility of a
Legacy Fund is very attractive. If our other charitable goals shift over
time, we can make changes without altering our will.”
“When we started our first fund, we considered other options,”
said Jean, “thinking a Toledo-based foundation might be limited, or
that they could only fund local entities. We were delighted to find
otherwise — their service is truly outstanding.”

Establishing A Fund
Take a moment to consider
the important part you might play in
Toledo Community Foundation’s work
A bequest in your will is a simple way to leave a lasting legacy.
by creating a charitable fund.
A life insurance policy can be changed to designate the Foundation as the owner and/or beneficiary of a policy.
There are a number of ways to get started,
and we invite you to explore them
with your family, your professional advisor
and with Foundation staff members.
The Foundation offers a variety of ways for you to make donations
to reach your philanthropic goals. You can establish your own Foundation fund either during your lifetime or through your estate plan.
All grants distributed from your fund — today and in the future — are
awarded to charities, as determined by you, in the name of your fund.
Your gift to the Foundation may be made in many forms. Corporations and businesses are limited to gifts of cash, securities, closelyheld stock, limited partnership interests and real estate. You and
your family have even more options to consider.
6
Retirement fund accounts are often your largest asset. You can
give all or part of these assets to the Foundation, both during
your lifetime and/or at your death.
Real estate (land, primary residences, vacation homes or farm
land) can be donated to the Foundation and deducted at full
fair market value, up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. The Foundation sells the real estate and the net proceeds
capitalize a new fund or are added to an existing fund. Similarly,
tangible personal property can be donated to the Foundation,
which is also then sold.
A charitable remainder trust allows you (or other named beneficiaries) to receive lifetime income. Upon your death, the remaining principal creates a fund at the Foundation. You receive
an immediate charitable deduction for a portion of the gift and
avoid capital gains tax.
A cash gift is tax deductible as provided under current law.
A charitable lead trust creates income for the Foundation for
a specified period, after which the remaining principal is distributed to named beneficiaries. Gift and estate taxes are reduced
with this type of gift.
Donations of appreciated publicly-traded securities are accepted. This type of gift avoids capital gains tax and allows the
maximum tax deduction for the full market value of the gift. The
Transfer of a private foundation affords you many advantages,
including lower overhead, staff to assist with your charitable goals
and a higher tax deduction for any future gift, to name only a few.

Foundation also accepts closely-held stock and limited partnership interests.

Simple Steps
Your Fund
to
1
Define your charitable goals. Decide if you want
family members involved, both now and/or in the
future. Consider how much involvement you want
in selecting the charitable organizations that will
receive grants from your fund. Think about how
much you want to give in charitable contributions
each year.
2
Contact a philanthropic services officer at the
Foundation to discuss the fund option or options
(described on pages 10 and 11) that best suit
your interests and needs. We can create a personalized plan, including the appropriate legal and
other documentation, which makes giving simple
and relevant.
3
Determine which asset or giving vehicle you will
use to start your fund. Evaluate the options of
lifetime assets versus planned giving assets — or
a combination of the two.
4
Select a name for your fund. Many donors choose
a family name, a name that honors or memorializes a loved one or a company name.

Options
Toledo Community Foundation
provides professional management
and investment of charitable funds
as well as personalized services
to meet the goals of individuals, families,
businesses and nonprofits.
There are many flexible ways to support your interests —
the choice is yours. How involved do you want to be in your
grant making? Do you want to give to a specific organization or a specific area of interest? Launch a scholarship to
honor or memorialize a loved one? Restrict your giving to
northwestern Ohio and/or fund internationally? Create or
continue your business giving program? Whatever your giving goals, there is a fund option for you.
The Foundation offers a number of fund options for you,
your family, businesses and nonprofit organizations. A
fund at the Foundation operates like a private foundation,
but without the administrative and legal burdens associated with private foundations. The funds are flexible and
you decide how much or how little you want to be involved
in making grants.

The Miracle League of
Northwest Ohio
Choosing a fund option
that is right for you
A Community Fund is the broadest option and leaves the decisions about your gift to the Foundation. You trust the Foundation’s extensive experience and knowledge of the community
to identify the most pressing needs and effective programs.
A Community Fund provides maximum assurance a fund will
remain timely and relevant. Grants from these funds are given
to qualified organizations to support the well-being and vitality
of our region and its residents.
Designated Fund
Field of Interest Fund
You support one or more specific charitable organization or
institution in perpetuity. A Designated Fund may help a single
theatre, a food bank or a school during your life and after your
death. If a beneficiary organization ceases to exist, loses its tax
exempt status or changes its mission, the Foundation redirects
support to a similar organization to honor your original intent.
You direct funding to specific causes (the environment, youth
programs or the arts, for instance) or geographical areas (a town,
county or region) that you feel strongly about, yet it does not
restrict grants to any one particular organization. Field of Interest Funds support issues or areas that are important to you in
perpetuity.
Donor Advised Fund
Organization Endowment Fund
You take a more active role in your grant making (whether local,
national or international). A Donor Advised Fund provides maximum
flexibility for your grant making, allowing designated advisors
(named by you) to make recommendations regarding grants from
your fund.
The Foundation’s years of experience with the nonprofit community
enables us to assist other charitable organizations in managing
their assets. By establishing an endowment fund at the Foundation,
nonprofit organizations are relieved of the administrative burdens
and costs associated with holding their own endowment fund, while
receiving a steady stream of income for operations, programming or
other organizational needs.
support effective organizations
engage with your giving
The Foundation facilitates compliance with financial, legal and
tax requirements, as well as helps develop grant making strategies, articulates funding guidelines and conducts due diligence,
relieving you of the administrative responsibilities associated with
charitable giving. If you wish, the Foundation helps you identify additional organizations that you might consider supporting.
You have several options.
6 Single advised fund – Allows only you to make grant recommendations.
6 Family advised fund – Provides a simple and popular way
for your family to engage in organized philanthropy.
6 Corporate advised fund – Offers flexible options for your
business and/or employees’ charitable giving programs. Your
company or business can outsource all, or any part, of its charitable giving program to the Foundation for management.
You can endow your fund, requiring that the principal of the fund
remains untouched and only a percentage of the annual earnings on the fund are available for grant making; or you can create
a growth fund (non-endowed) allowing the flexibility to distribute
both fund principal and annual earnings, although not below the
minimum required fund balance of $10,000.
Donor Directed Pooled Fund
direct your giving to specific organizations
This type of fund allows you the privilege, during your lifetime, to
annually designate specific charitable organizations to receive
grants from your fund.
connect personal values to grant making
sustain nonprofit organizations
Scholarship Fund
invest in education
You establish an educational scholarship for a specific interest.
Scholarships can support any level of education, and may be directed toward students who are graduates of a particular grade or
high school, students planning to attend a particular secondary or
post-secondary school, students in a particular field or students
from a certain geographical area.
Supporting Organization
partner with the Foundation for access to community information
A Supporting Organization is a separate and distinct legal and
grant making entity that is in direct affiliation with the Foundation.
It maintains its own board of trustees which has decision-making
authority relevant to grant recipients and other matters. A Supporting Organization’s alliance with the Foundation reduces administrative, investment and regulatory burdens. Family involvement,
individual attention, flexibility, professional staffing and access to
community information are among the key reasons that families
and businesses create supporting organizations at Toledo Community Foundation.

We Can Help
We share our donors’ commitment to building healthy communities and promoting
the responsible stewardship of resources. Whether you choose to open a fund
that creates an immediate impact in the community, a permanent endowment to address
ongoing needs or a legacy for your community, or use the Foundation’s experience
to administer some or all aspects of a grant making program,
the Foundation can help make your charitable giving easy and effective.
The Center for
Nonprofit Resources
helps nonprofit organizations advance their missions through expert
guidance and a wide array of services, training and educational opportunities. We know that, over time, our community’s needs and opportunities change and nonprofit organizations have emerged and
grown in large numbers to address these issues. Many organizations
seek help with capacity and sustainability – the kind of support they
need to achieve their missions.
An additional offering, by establishing an organization endowment
fund under the auspices of the Foundation, nonprofit organizations
are relieved of the administrative burdens and costs associated
with holding their own endowment fund, while receiving a steady
stream of income for operating, programmatic and other organizational needs.
For information about creating an organization endowment
fund, contact Ken Frisch or Bridget Brell Holt, philanthropic
services officers, at 419.241.5049.
The Foundation’s mission involves a commitment to ensuring that
nonprofit organizations in our region have the information and
resources required to operate in an efficient and effective manner. Recognition of this need to assist in building local nonprofits’
capacity, as well as offering quality training and technical assistance, served as the basis for the establishment of The Center for
Nonprofit Resources.
The Center has developed an ever-changing list of training programs designed to inform and assist local nonprofits. Programs
are offered in every area of nonprofit capacity building including
board governance, finance, fundraising, human resources, leadership, marketing, organizational development and technology.
The Center also offers two professional certificate programs. The
Certificate in Nonprofit Management provides the fundamentals
an individual needs to build their skills in nonprofit management,
and through a partnership with Lourdes University some hours are
eligible for transfer into their Masters of Leadership program.*
The Certificate of Executive Leadership is designed to support
emerging nonprofit leaders, specifically minority CEOs/Executive
Directors, and staff interested in growing into these positions. A
combination of high-quality professional development workshops
and mentorships provide training and an ongoing support system
for personal and professional success.
