Memorable
SPRING
again, everybody! As West Tennessee experiences
historic flooding along the Mississippi River and its
tributaries, parts of East Tennessee are still cleaning
up from recent tornadoes. Speaking on behalf of the TTA board and its
members, our thoughts and prayers go out to all individuals who have
suffered from this spring’s natural disasters across the Southeast. I can only
imagine what they are going through right now.
The TTA board met recently in Nashville to prepare for the next
Conference and Trade Show in January. With an enormous amount of work
from the TTA Conference and Trade Show Committee, the speaker lineup is
very close to being completed. As always, the board looks to find ways to
increase your educational and enjoyment experience at the conference.
In this copy of Tennessee Turfgrass, you will find our annual Membership
Directory. This is a great source to network outside of the Conference and to
connect with industry peers that you may be able to help out and/or use their
expertise to help you accomplish a goal. While reading through the member list,
take note if you notice peers who are not listed but who could benefit from being
a member of the TTA. Help us spread the word about the growth of our
association and our Conference and Trade Show. With your help, we can
continue to grow and prosper to become the premier conference in the Southeast.

GETTING THROUGH
SUMMER
have had quite a start to the
summer season. The volatile
weather has included very
strong damaging storms and unseasonably
warm temperatures. The combination will
make for some interesting situations for us all
as the summer progresses.
Take the time to work through possible
scenarios that could happen with disease,
insect control, plant health, etc., so you can
better prepare yourself for any challenges that
arise. I have always found that when the
weather is out of the ordinary, trouble is
always around the corner when it comes to
managing the turf. Looking at scenarios and
solutions early can help alleviate larger
problems down the road and keep the
maintenance costs down.
A good way to help gather information is
to network among your peers. Valuable
knowledge can be gathered through the
experience of others. And don’t forget, you
have the ability yourself to help others within
our industry by networking and outreaching.
Take the time to help whenever you can, as it
is part of our core purpose and mission
within our organization. Techniques and
practices that may seem routine to you may
be a new and innovative way for someone
else to make positive improvements.
Also keep in mind that we are an evolving
industry with continuous research and
innovations. The best way to maintain your
value as an employee and increase your
professional stock is to take advantage of the
continuous education our organization offers.
Make plans to attend our field days whenever
they are offered to help further your knowledge!

summer, everyone! Last year was
a horrible summer for everyone. If
the flood didn’t get you, the heat
did. It still amazes me how quickly
we were able to get back to normal operating mode here at
Gaylord Springs, and yet I know that there are many people still
struggling with the aftermath of the flooding. I have been praying
that this year would be kinder to everyone, both those of us in
turfgrass and everyone else. It looks as though the year is shaping
up to be challenging. This spring certainly has been changeable,
with 20-degree temperature swings in the high in just a day. The
heavy rains and tornadoes have brought damage to many courses
and friends. I can only hope that the summer will be more
predictable and gentle.
I was asked several weeks ago an interesting question: “What
value does being a member of an association bring back to the
facility, and what does it mean to you?” After taking some time to
think about it, I realized that being a member of an association
makes this job we do much more than “just a job.” I remember the
first jobs that I had: I went in, did what I was told and took a
paycheck home for my efforts.
Being a part of an association, however, made my job of being
a superintendent a profession and a passion. It’s being a part of
something bigger than yourself. Being a member gives you access
to other people who have ideas that can solve your problems.
Vendors and superintendents are some of the most resourceful and
creative people I know. They never let anything stop them from
providing a great product for their guests.
Membership also gives you access to education and research
that are pertinent to your profession and that are easy to find —
not only out there on the internet, but right here at home. UT is
doing wonderful work every day for us. Call the UT researchers
and ask questions; they are always there to help us.
You also become a part of a big family that cares about the
same things that you do and is going through many of the same

things you are. I was so touched by all the people last year who
came to physically help us recover from the flood and the many
people who called just to check up on me. Even though we all
technically are in competition with each other for the same clients,
I’ve never known a superintendent who wouldn’t go and help
someone that asked for help. I’ve called superintendents in other
parts of the country (or out of the country) that I didn’t know, and
they never hesitated to take the time to answer my questions.
In short, being a part of an association makes you much more
valuable to your facility because you have the knowledge and
support of everyone out there doing the same job. This “job” of
being a superintendent gets under your skin; it becomes a part of
who you are, a part of your self-identity. I noticed the other day,
when I was in a group of new people and we were introducing
ourselves, they all said, “I work at XYC, and I do ABC.” When we
introduce ourselves, we say, “I am a golf course superintendent,
and I work at XYZ.”
All of this mushy stuff leads to one thing. Take advantage of
your membership. Look at the websites: GCSAA, TGCSA and
TTA. There is great information there and links to other great
sites. Read the magazines: the information is timely and up to
date. Come to the local TGCSA chapter meetings and the TTA
meeting. Meet the members, talk to them and don’t be a
wallflower. Network and make relationships. You may not need
them today, but you will tomorrow.
As always, if there is anyway that I can help you, don’t hesitate
to ask. And check your Pesticide Points: everyone needs to
recertify by October of this year.

each year, TTA members nominate

the TTA Awards & Scholarship
