MAKE BELIEVE AND
MUSTAJEEB TO STUD
Yesterday it was announced that the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des
Poulains winner Make Believe (Makfi) will take up stallion duties
at Ballylinch Stud in Ireland, whilst May’s Gr.2 Greenlands Stakes
winner Mustajeeb (Nayef) is set to take up residence at Overbury
Stud in Gloucestershire.
MAKE BELIEVE
Trained by Andre Fabre, Make Believe will become the first son of
Makfi to stand at stud, where he will command a fee of €20,000.
Unbeaten in two runs at two, he was second, beaten a head in the
Gr.3 Prix Djebel prior to his French Classic success. He bounced back
from a poor run in the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes to score a
comfortable win in the Gr.1 Prix de la Foret on the Arc undercard. He
finished his racing career with a fifth in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Bred by Aston Mullins Stud, he is a three-parts brother to the
dual American Gr.1 winner Dubawi Heights (Dubawi), out of the
winning Suave Dancer mare Rosie’s Posy.

DUBAWI COLT PROVIDES
SHOW STOPPING FINALE
A son of the elite sire Dubawi out of the Classic-winning Nightime
provided a superb centerpiece to this year’s Goffs November Foal
Sale when selling to John Ferguson for €1.1m.
Given his lineage the sale-topping Dubawi made compelling
appeal on paper and he more than matched that as an individual
and a palpable air of expectation descended on Goffs as he made
his entrance to the ring and, even at this stage, every vantage
point in the auditorium was taken while auctioneer Henry Beeby
described him as a ‘stunning type with a stallion’s pedigree’.
The bidding for The Castlebridge Consignment offering (Lot
1129) began at €100,000 and then steadily worked its way
towards seven figures and in the latter stages John Ferguson and

Ibrahim Araci duelled for the half-brother to three winners
including this year’s Listed Oyster Stakes winner Zhukova
(Fastnet Rock).
Ferguson was the first to bring the price to seven figures and
when he countered Araci’s offer of an additional €50,000 the colt
was his. The second most expensive foal to have come under the
hammer in Ireland, the colt is the latest produce of Nightime
(Galileo), who famously won the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas for
Dermot Weld and his late mother, Margeurite, in 2006.
“He needs little explanation. Dick O’Gorman and the Darley team
had seen him on the farm and liked how he had progressed and he
came here this week and showed himself off very well. He’s by a great
sire out of a great racemare and fingers crossed that we have a
racehorse on our hands,” declared Ferguson.
Despite producing a seven-figure top lot, the five-day sale was
unable to match last year’s returns. The aggregate of almost €26m
was down by six per cent, while the €31,950 average fell by 14
points. Furthermore, the median dropped from €22,000 to
€18,000 and the clearance rate fell by eight points to 77 per cent.
In an end of sale statement, Goffs Group Chief Executive, Henry
Beeby said: “The Dubawi was the highlight of another superb Goffs
Foal Sale that has enjoyed a trade of depth, consistency and real
fireworks, especially for those that appealed the most. That we were
entrusted to offer the only Galileo colt foal of the year anywhere is
also a wonderful endorsement of the Goffs service and it was fitting
that he was the second highest price of the sale.
“Whilst we have not kept pace with the records set last year the
statistics are the second best on record, which is the cause for some
Henry Beeby puts the hammer down at €1,100,000 for the

celebration, although it must be noted that the clearance rate is less
than 2014, which mirrors the trends seen throughout the autumn at
the yearling sales.
“However, this is very much the first choice for the cream of the
Irish foal crop every year at a sale at which pinhookers, end users and
international buyers choose to invest and it is revealing that today’s
median price actually rose by six per cent and the clearance rate was
an impressive 84 per cent.

“Indeed, this is another Goffs sale that has truly outperformed the
market over the last five years, so it was no surprise that we were
inundated with entries leading to an additional day at the start of
the week, which may have been another factor in the reduction of
the week’s clearance rate.
“Whilst some of those foals may not have been the most
commercial we enjoyed huge interest on every day of the sale and
the five days has consolidated the amazing growth of recent years
and this sale’s market leading position.”
The day’s second highest price was supplied by the sole Galileo
foal on offer this week who fetched €475,000. This colt (Lot 1182)
was knocked down to the intriguingly named Hunday after the
purchaser outlasted Andreas Putsch and indications were that he
would be reoffered as a yearling.
The Galileo hailed from Swordlestown Little and is a halfbrother to the Gr.2 Railway Stakes winner Lilbourne Lad
(Acclamation). The colt is the most expensive offspring to date to
sell out of the mare Sogno Verde (Green Desert), who has also
bred the Gr.3-placed Bobbyscot (Alhaarth) and this season’s
useful three-year-old Roberstown (Raven’s Pass).
Easily one of the best bred foals on offer this week was a
daughter of New Approach offered from Jim Bolger’s
Redmonstown Stud and she was snapped up by Dermot
Farrington for €450,000. On the corresponding day last year
Farrington created Irish bloodstock auction history when paying
€1.8m for the filly foal by Frankel out of Finsceal Beo.
Trainer Dermot Weld, vendor of that sales-topping
€1,100,000 Dubawi colt, with Ryan McElligott.
Ibrahim Araci, who was the underbidder on the top lot to
John Ferguson, but had won an earlier battle with him for
the Dark Angel colt Lot 1115 from Balintougher Stud.
As a breeding prospect alone, Farrington’s purchase made
tremendous appeal as her dam, Scribonia (Danehill), has already
bred the Gr.3 Albany Stakes winner and Gr.1 1,000 Guineassecond Cuis Ghaire (Galileo), the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes-second
Gile Na Greine (Galileo), the Gr.3-winning Scintillula (Galileo)
and the Gr.3-placed Claiomh Solais (Teofilo).
“She’s a lovely filly with a super page. She’s been bought as a racing
and breeding prospect and it’s just very hard to get these types of
fillies,” remarked Farrington, who was acting for an undisclosed
client.
Dark Angel’s striking and unrelenting rise through the stallion
ranks over the last few years has meant that his progeny have
been a red hot commodity in the sales ring for the last few months
and the Yeomanstown Stud resident reached another milestone
yesterday when his colt Lot 1115 from Balintougher Stud sold for
€370,000.
The most expensive foal to be sold by his sire, the quality grey
was the subject of a battle between Rob Speers, acting for Ibrahim
Araci, and John Ferguson from which the former emerged
victorious after the pair traded quick fire bids from around
€200,000. The colt in question is a son of Kevin Prendergast’s Gr.1
Phoenix Stakes heroine Miss Beatrix, whose progeny to date
include the Gr.3-placed Jally (Tamayuz) and the very smart
Turkish runner Tamga (Azamour).

Galileo colt out of the mare as a foal here. He was with the late Sir
Henry Cecil and showed a lot of promise, but unfortunately he never
got a chance to run and Tamga, who is also out of the mare, is down
in the catalogue as a Listed-placed horse but he’s a Gr.1 horse in
Turkey.
“The sire needs absolutely no introduction at this stage, he’s a
serious sire and it’s very, very hard to compete at the likes of Book 1 so
we are delighted to have picked up the two horses that we did today
and hopefully they are two exciting prospects for next year,”
commented Rob Speers.
An outstanding colt from Nelius Hayes’s Knockainey Stud
became the most expensive foal by Kodiac to come up for auction
as he sold to Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown for €260,000.
As has been evidence throughout the autumn and this week,
Kodiac’s star continues to rise following another superb season for
the Tally-Ho Stud resident and within an hour yesterday the record
price for a foal by the Danehill horse was smashed twice.
This colt (Lot 1068) is out of a winning Arch half-sister to the
Gr.3 scorer Summertime Legacy (dam of the Gr.1 winners
Mandaean and Wavering, as well as the Gr.1-placed Winters
Moon) so he made notable appeal on pedigree and his price
quickly sped past €100,000. For a period John Ferguson looked as
though he might secure the colt but Brown saw off Ferguson and
several other rivals late when bringing the price to €260,000.
“He’s been bought to resell for Corduff Stud. He’s a smashing
individual, a serious horse and he was one that really struck myself,
James and David [Egan]. Obviously, the stallion is going from
strength to strength and this colt is coming off an excellent farm,
Nelius is a very, very good breeder,” commented Brown.
Earlier, the record price for a Kodiac foal was briefly held by a
colt (Lot 1055) from Foxland Stud, who was knocked down to the
busy John Ferguson for €170,000. The March-born colt is the third
produce of the Listed Hurry Harriet Stakes scorer and dual Gr.3placed Duchess Of Foxland (Medecis).
This week’s catalogue contained just one foal by Oasis Dream
and he sold to Ballyshiel Farm for €210,000. The colt was offered
through The Castlebridge Consignment and he is the first produce
of Harmonic Note (Nayef), whose racing career yielded two wins
and a third in the Listed Height Of Fashion Stakes. Harmonic Note
came from relatively humble beginnings as she was an €18,000
graduate of the Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale, before then selling
for 135,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale.
The star member of Camelot’s first crop of foals that were on
offer yesterday came when a €180,000 colt was snapped up by

Rob Speers and Ibrahim Araci. The colt, who hails from the same
family as Thursday’s €150,000 session topper by Zoffany,
attracted interest from a host of would be purchasers, but
eventually the hammer fell in favour of Rob Speers, who was
acting for owner Ibrahim Araci.
Their purchase (Lot 1039) was consigned by Killourney Mor
Farm and he is out of the Danehill mare Close Regards, who is
already responsible for the recent Australian Gr.1 scorer Magic
Hurricane (Hurricane Run) and the Stakes-placed Maybe Grace
(Hawk Wing). Interestingly, Araci was underbidder on Camelot as
a yearling and he was understandably keen to secure a foal by the
Montjeu horse.
“Mr Araci saw quite a bit of the sire in this colt. He was underbidder
on Camelot as a yearling and followed his career closely. Camelot is
unproven, but he was a very good horse and came within a hair’s
breadth of winning the Triple Crown. We’re very impressed by
Camelot’s stock and this colt’s half-brother, Magic Hurricane, is by
another son of Montjeu. He’ll be a very exciting horse to put into
training next year,” stated Speers.
As well as signing for the sale topper, Ferguson made a host of
other purchases throughout the day and these included a
€300,000 colt (Lot 1178), who is the most expensive foal to come
under the hammer from Dawn Approach’s first crop. The chesnut
was representing quite a coup for Esker Lodge Stud as they
picked up his Listed-placed dam Simonetta (Lil’s Boy) for
€50,000 at the mares sale here last year. She comes from an
outstanding Jim Bolger dynasty that has produced one Pattern
race performer after another in recent years.
Ferguson then matched this price for a Dark Angel colt from
Springfort Park Stud. Lot 1201 is out of a Stakes-placed half-sister
to the Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes hero
Kingsgate Native. Also destined for the Darley team is a €280,000
son of Invincible Spirit (Lot 1162) half-brother to the Listed
winner Dusky Queen (Shamardal) and the Gr.3-placed Achnaha
(Haatef).
Much earlier, Ferguson signed for a €190,000 son of Invincible
Spirit (Lot 1023) hailing from the Irish National Stud. Eddie
O’Leary was among those that had to settle for the role of under
bidder on the first produce of the Listed Conqueror Stakes winner
and dual Gr.3-placed Boastful (Clodovil).
The Shadwell Estates team made their second six-figure
purchase of the week when going to €180,000 for a chesnut son
of Dawn Approach from Altenbach Bloodstock, from whom they
purchased a €120,000 Harbour Watch colt on Thursday. Sheikh
Hamdan Al Maktoum’s purchase is out of the successful producer
Gazebo (Cadeaux Genereux), whose runners to date include
the Listed Flame Of Tara Stakes heroine Forthefirstime (Dr Fong)
and the Listed National Stakes scorer Pyman’s Theory (Exceed
And Excel).
Towards the outset of the day a Rockton Stud-consigned son of
Dawn Approach sold to the Italian outfit We Bloodstock for
€160,000. The colt hails from a family that We are already very
familiar with as they campaign his Italian-based juvenile half-

couple of Listed races in December, the Criterium di Pisa
and the Criterium dell’Immacolata, will bring the juvenile
season in Italy to a close, but the time has come to do a
quick round-up. Below are the top four colts and fillies according
to the ItaliaForm ratings, as well as a couple of young horses to

on the website www.easyhorses.it. The ratings are in kilos and for

BIZ HEART (Ire), 2c,
Roderic O’Connor – Biz Bar (Tobougg)
O: WE Bloodstock, B: Le Gi, T: Stefano Botti
€97,000 SGA Selected Sale
The Gr.2 Gran Criterium, run on heavy ground and at a strong pace,
turned into a real test of stamina. Biz Heart (Roderic O’Connor)
handled the conditions well and scored fair and square, fighting
back when challenged by Basileus (Dream Ahead) inside the last
furlong. The third, a little more than seven lengths behind, was
Gerrard’s Quest (Captain Gerrard), a colt with decent British form
rated 94 and a reliable guide to assess the rating. Biz Heart is in the
range of 108/110 and ItaliaForm has him at 112.5, half a kilo lower
than the two last winners of the Italian Championship event for twoyear-olds, Hero Look (Lope De Vega) and Priore Philip (Dane
Friendly).
A quick look at his pedigree suggests that he could be a
doubtful stayer. His sire Roderic O’Connor (Galileo) ran well
below his par when tried three times over ten furlongs and more,
while his dam Biz Bar (Tobougg) landed a Listed race over 1500m
at two, but failed to win another subsequently over further. Biz
Bar ran her best race when fifth beaten by not much in the Gr.2
Oaks d’Italia over 2200m at San Siro. The best of her previous two
Group winners – from three foals – was Biz The Nurse (Oratorio),
a genuine 2400m performer who won the Gr.2 Derby Italiano and
the Gr.1 Gran Premio di Milano. The distaff section of his pedigree
leaves little doubt about his stamina: the third dam Poelish Hills,
by Danzig, is a half sister to Niniski (Nijinsky), who won the Gr.1
Irish St Leger and Gr.1 Prix Royal-Oak.
Biz Heart ran his only bad race when fourth on firm ground in
the Listed Premio de Montel in early July at San Siro. His lack of
maturity was the main reason. ItaliaForm 112.5

Poet’s Voice – Mia Diletta (Selkirk)
O/B: Scuderia Blueberry, T: Stefano Botti
The Gr.3 Premio Guido Berardelli over 1800m has a chequered
record, mostly due to the seasonally heavy ground. In those
conditions even the Champion Falbrav got beaten by the
moderate performer Mistero (Portrait Gallery) back in 2000.
Good to firm ground is not usual in November, even at
Capannelle. The fast surface provided a genuine result this year
and Poeta Diletto led home a 1-2 for Poet’s Voice and trainer
Stefano Botti, outbattling Voice Of Love. The British raider Viren’s
Army (Twirling Candy) ran on well, three quarters of a length
behind, to give handicappers a bit of help. Richard Hannon’s

charge is rated 98 and you do not need to be Archimedes to rate
the Botti pair at 100.
The fast pace set by Voice Of Love is another sign of strength
and the final time (1.49.5) was just 7/10 of a second slower than
the race record set in 2013 by Gentlemen Only, a Gr.1 winner in
Hong Kong as Beauty Only.
Poeta Diletto, narrowly beaten on his debut at San Siro, strolled
home three weeks before the Berardelli in a maiden over 1700m.
According to the figures provided by Sandro Marranini’s
ItaliaForm, he improved 11.5kg for his Group win. The chesnut
colt needed every yard of the 1800m trip to beat the brave Voice
Of Love and has scope for improvement.
A juvenile win over 1800m causes some to misjudge a horse’s
stamina. Poeta Diletto is bred to stay a mile. His sire Poet’s Voice
was tried twice at 2000m and was very disappointing on good to
soft turf in the Gr.1 Champion Stakes and on Tapeta when last in
the Gr.1 Dubai World Cup. Poeta Diletto is the second foal and
winner out of Mia Diletta, a dual Listed winner over 1500m at
three. It would not be a surprise if next spring he developed into
a decent miler like his dam’s sire Selkirk. ItaliaForm 110.5

Poet’s Voice – Snowfield (Tale Of The Cat)
O: Scuderia Effevi, B: Le Gi, T: Stefano Botti
€46,000 SGA Selected Sale by Scuderia Effevi
A slight change in the calendar allowed Voice Of Love the chance
to try the Berardelli after his easy three-length win in the Listed
Premio Campobello over 1800m at San Siro. The chesnut colt put
up another game effort at Capannelle to finish a season in which
he finished first or second in all six of his starts. He is a model of
consistency and two of his defeats came by a head and a nose.
He is a half-brother to the three-year-old Time Chant (War
Chant), who also won the Campobello and was third after
meeting with trouble in the Gr.2 Derby Italiano. Time Chant was
campaigned as a 2400m horse and he won the Listed Gran Premio
d’Italia over that trip, but failed to show his true form in the Gr.1
Gran Premio del Jockey Club in heavy going. ItaliaForm 110.5
BASILEUS (Ire), 2c,
Dream Ahead – Miss Mariduff (Hussonet)
O: Michele Crecco, B: Gennaro Stimola, T: Stefano Botti
€36,000 SGA Selected Sale by Scuderia Aleali
The Gr.3 Premio Parioli is the obvious target for Basileus (Dream
Ahead), runner-up to Biz Heart in the Gr.2 Gran Criterium. Trainer
Stefano Botti was adamant after the race when he said that
stamina made the difference between his two colts.
Basileus, who flashed home on his debut at Capannelle and
landed a conditions race at San Siro, is “just a miler”, but a good
one. He is gifted with a blazing turn of foot and, even though he
handled the heavy ground in the Gr.2 at San Siro, he will relish a
faster surface.
He is a half-brother to the Gr.2 winner Porsenna (Dylan
Thomas) and the Gr.3-placed Astrelle (Makfi). His dam Miss
Mariduff (Hussonet) is out of the Gr.2 scorer and Gr.1-placed
Sopran Mariduff (Persian Bold), a half-sister to Snowfield, the
dam of Voice Of Love. ItaliaForm 110

CASSINA DE POMM (Ity), 2f,
Pounced – Clever Annie (Danehill Dancer)
O: Dioscuri, B: SAB Allevamento di Besnate, T: Stefano Botti
The Gr.3 Premio Dormello, like the Gran Criterium, was run on
heavy ground. Cassina De Pomm (Pounced) merely did her job,
finishing the season with a perfect record of three wins from three
starts. She was visually unimpressive, but ItaliaForm credited her
with a flattering mark of 111, three kilos higher than the winners
from the last four years, that converts in OR terms to 109. She
received a more typical RPR of 101. The correct accessment of the
rating is difficult because of the lack of foreign runners, but
probably the real mark is in the middle and Cassina De Pomm is a
“standard Dormello winner”.
She has shown significant improvement on each start and is
expected to stay further. She is the first Group winner by the
young and promising sire Pounced (Rahy) and is from the famous
“Crenelle-line”, that of the Derby Italiano winners Crackerjack
King, Awelmarduk and other high-class performers like
Jakkalberry. ItaliaForm 111

Identity Run Fast (Footstepsinthesand) ran a gallant race in the
Premio Dormello, closing fast for second just three parts of a
length behind Cassina De Pomm after traffic troubles. After a
third on her debut behind a couple of good fillies, she opened her
account beating a decent colt in Vettori Rules (Aussie Rules).
Her connections decided to play safe after the Dormello and
she will walk the Premio Regina Elena trail next season.
ItaliaForm 110
AQUILA SOLITARIA (Ire), 2f,
Raven’s Pass – Alta Fedeltà (Oasis Dream)
O/B: Scuderia Incolinx, T: Il Cavallo In Testa
The well-regarded filly was campaigned with the Premio Dormello
as her intended main target. She followed up a game win on her
debut with a second in the Listed Premio Coolmore, but failed to
get the Dormello trip, fading badly in the last furlong. The decision
to switch her back to 1200m paid dividends in the Listed Premio
Ubaldo Pandolfi. She scored by three and half lengths in good
style. Her dam Alta Fedelta (Oasis Dream) gained her Group win
at four in the Gr.3 Premio Carlo Chiesa when trainer Vittorio
Caruso decided to drop back in trip from 1600 to 1200m.
Bruno Grizzetti, the main man behind the Il Cavallo In Testa, has
won the Premio Regina Elena seven times and some of those
winners had the same “speedy” profile as Aquila Solitaria. If she

VICTIM OF LOVE (Ity), 2f,
Ramonti – Imco Imagination (Darshaan)
O: Scuderia Effevi, B: Allevamento Deni,
T: Stefano Botti
The half-sister to the Gr.2 Derby Italiano hero Goldstream was
mightily impressive on her debut over 1800m in September. Her
connections then made the surprising move of running the filly
over 1500m in the Listed Criterium Femminile. She set a strong
pace and recorded an uncontested three-length win and gained
a 109 ItaliaForm mark. The British raider and Listed-placed Make
Fast (Makfi), failed to perform, but the runner-up Rabiosa Fiore
(Sakhee’s Secret) and the third Endless Summer (Pounced)
provided solid yardsticks for the form.
Victim Of Love showed enough speed to consider the Premio
Regina Elena, and probably also has the stamina for the Oaks
d’Italia. ItaliaForm 109

ran on strongly to score in a maiden over 1700m on very soft
ground by four lengths. He gained a 101.5 ItaliaForm mark and
could develop into a serious candidate for the Premio Parioli.
The first three dams have not returned a Group winner, but Don
Aurelio has run faster than his pedigree and is trained by Peppe di
Chio, who has had a brilliant season, with a 34%-winning strike
rate from his small string of just eight juveniles. ItaliaForm 101.5
RESPONSIBLEFORLOVE (Ire), 2f,
Duke Of Marmalade – Vee Gita (Vettori)
O: Razza Latina, B: Pat Grogan, T: Endo Botti
€17,000 Goffs Open Yearling Sale by Razza Latina
Responsibleforlove (Duke Of Marmalade) finished like a train
on her debut, just a head behind Aquila Solitaria but in front of
Identity Run Fast. A month later, in a fillies’ maiden over 1800m,
she made the running and came home in a canter, seven lengths
clear. She was credited with a 99 ItaliaForm mark, but is much
better than that. Some form experts put her in the 108-110 range.
Endo Botti rates her a bright prospect, possibly a filly for the Oaks
d’Italia. She is the second winner out of Vee Gita (Vettori), a halfsister to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Hero Vale Of York, whose foal,
a filly by Kodiac was purchased on Thursday by Kilmoney Cottage
Stud for €140,000 at Goffs November Sale. ItaliaForm 99+

brother Biz Heart (Roderic O’Connor), who recently added
further lustre to what is already a strong pedigree by landing the
Gr.2 Gran Criterium.
This colt has been bought to go to Italy for a racing career, while
We plan to campaign Biz Heart in the major Italian three-year-old
races. Lot 1021 is the latest produce of the Italian Stakes winner
Biz Bar (Tobougg), who has already bred the Gr.1 Gran Premio di
Milano and Gr.2 Derby Italiano hero Biz The Nurse (Oratorio) and
the Gr.3 Premio Guido Berardelli winner Misterious Boy (Arcano).
Another popular son of Dawn Approach was a colt from Baroda
& Colbinstown Studs who came to Philip Stauffenberg for
€125,000. This good-looking chesnut is the third produce of the
Listed-placed juvenile Aris (Danroad) and she has the distinction
of being a three-parts-sister to David Wachman’s outstanding
juvenile filly and Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Again.
“He’s a very good walker with a lot of quality and he’s very correct.
He will be back for resale next year,” stated Stauffenberg.
The demand for Zoffany’s progeny has been unrelenting all
week and Pier House Stud had to go to €150,000 for a Pipe View
Stud-consigned colt (Lot 1082), whose grandam is the Listed
scorer Cheyenne Spirit (Indian Ridge). This colt will come back
for sale next year and a similar plan beckons for a superb daughter
(Lot 1003) of the Dansili horse who was knocked down to Timmy
Hyde for €130,000. The Churchtown House Stud offering is the
fourth foal produced by Tommy Stack’s Listed Belgrave Stakes
winner Aine (Danehill Dancer).
Among the English pinhooking fraternity to make their
presence felt were the Carmel Stud team and they forked out
€150,000 to secure a daughter of Invincible Spirit offered from
Oaklawn Stud. The February-born daughter of the Irish National
Stud resident (Lot 1087) is the second foal produced by a Teofilo
half-sister to the Gr.1 E P Taylor Stakes heroine Folk Opera
(Singspiel).
Another Invincible Spirit to take the eye was a half-brother to
this year’s Gr.1 Ascot Gold Cup hero Trip To Paris (Champs
Elysees), who has recently finished second in the Gr.1 Caulfield
Cup and fourth in the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup. With a bid of €135,000
Joe Foley, acting on behalf of Yeomanstown Stud, secured the
son of the Fantastic Light mare Le Grande Zoa, whose family
goes back to the sires Distant Relative and Ezzoud.
Yeomanstown were back in action later on when forking out

GOFFS NOVEMBER MARES SALE
POPULAR AGA KHAN DRAFT
HEADS NOVEMBER MARES SALE
The Breeding Stock section of Goffs November Sale comprises
469 broodmares and fillies out of training who will be offered for
sale over the next two days. Drafts from some of the world’s most
renowned stud farms are on offer, including the Aga Khan’s Studs,
Airlie Stud, Ballylinch Stud, The Castlebridge Consignment,
Darley, Derrinstown Stud, the Irish National Stud, Kilcarn Stud,
Moyglare Stud, Rathasker Stud, Rathbarry Stud and
Redmondstown Stud.
The Aga Khan’s Studs provided two of the top four lots in 2014,
headed by the sale-topping Gr.3 winner Hazariya. The daughter
of Xaar, in foal to Fastnet Rock, was bought for €480,000 by
Oliver St Lawrence for a client. There had been three seven-figure
lots at the 2013 sale, headed by the €6m Chicquita, so some of
the figures were understandably down last year, the average by
48% to €37,547, yet the median rose by 9% to €25,000.
The Aga Khan’s consignment this week includes the Listed
winner Silwana (Peintre Celebre; Lot 1362), who is out of a halfsister to Sinndar; Velandia (Sadler’s Wells; Lot 1363), a halfsister to Gr.1 winners Valanour and Vereva, in foal to Born To
Sea; Sindirana (Kalanisi; Lot 1365), a Listed-winning half-sister
to Sinndar, in foal to Intello; and Hazarista (Barathea; Lot 1367),
a Classic-placed, Gr.3-winning half-sister to last year’s sale-topper,
in foal to War Command.
Derrinstown Stud will offer, among others, Hakeeka (Lot 1417),
a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Aqlaam in foal to Intikhab, and the
Gr.2-placed Listed winner Sahool (Lot 1421), in foal to Cape
Cross, while the large Darley consignment includes the Australian
Gr.2 winner French Bid (Lot 1281), in foal to Dawn Approach; the
Gr.1-placed Listed winner Ocean Silk (Lot 1283), in foal to Exceed
And Excel; the 2003 Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Carry On
Katie (Lot 1325), in foal to Slade Power; the 2006 Gr.1 Falmouth
Stakes winner Rajeem (Lot 1397), in foal to Slade Power; Street
Cry’s full-sister River Cry (Lot 1404), in foal to Teofilo; and
Mozart’s full-sister Victoria Star (Lot 1405), in foal to Pivotal.
Mares from Airlie Stud include Katayeb (Lot 1521), a half-sister to
Gr.1 Classic winner White Muzzle, in foal to Dandy Man, while the
Ballylinch Stud consignment includes High Fidelity (Lot 1412), a
half-sister to Champion Hurricane Run, in foal to Dream Ahead.
Others include an unnamed two-year-old Galileo half-sister
(Lot 1333) to the dual Group winner Yellow Rosebud; the Gr.3placed We’ll Go Walking (Lot 1356), out of a full-sister to Teofilo
and in foal to Mastercraftsman; Lady Lucia (Lot 1370), dam of
Kodiac’s Gr.2-winning son Adaay and back in foal to Kodiac; the
Gr.1-placed Gr.3 winner Tobann (Lot 1386), in foal to Pour Moi;
and Bridal Dance (Lot 1390), dam of Gr.3 winner Hawksmoor, in
foal to Dark Angel.
Leading broodmare sires are well represented throughout by
such as Sadler’s Wells, Danehill, Danehill Dancer, Darshaan,
Galileo, Montjeu and Pivotal, while the covering sires include
Acclamation, Canford Cliffs, Cape Cross, Dark Angel, Dawn
Approach, Dream Ahead, Exceed And Excel, Kodiac, Pivotal, Ruler
Of The World, Sea The Moon, Slade Power, Teofilo, Toronado,
War Command and Zoffany, amongst others.

CAPE THOROUGHBRED SALE
MAYFAIR SPECULATORS
SCOOP TOP BERNARDINI FILLY
A month after the Johannesburg edition of the Cape
Thoroughbred Sales Ready To Run Sale, the show moved a
thousand miles to the south of the country, to the picturesque
country racecourse in Durbanville, a burgeoning town 20 minutes
outside of Cape Town and widely regarded as the point at which
you will start to come across South Africa’s most famous vineyards.
The racecourse, an undulating left-handed turf course is
typically used during the wet winter months when the Cape’s
main racecourse, Kenilworth Racecourse, is rested. But, it also
serves as a venue for racecourse gallops by the Province’s training
fraternity and is host to the breeze-up gallops, which were held
on Thursday morning.
Many a good judge regarded the gallop of Lot 100, the athletic
daughter of Bernardini, as the best of the morning and whilst
the South African breezes are not timed, the manner in which she
did her work did not go unnoticed by Team Mayfair Speculators
who paid the top price of the sale at R1.5 million. Consigned by
Soetendal Estate acting as agent for a partnership, which included
Kerry Jack who had purchased the filly from Melbourne for
AUS$25,000, thus ensuring a healthy profit for her backers.
As was the case in Johannesburg, Australian imports dominated
the top end of the sale, but it was the striking Normandy Studconsigned son of the late Western Winter, Lot 65 that was snapped
up by Kerry Jack Bloodstock for R1.4 million. Bred by Sally Bruss,
long serving manager of Lammerskraal Stud, the colt was originally
offered at Bloodstock South Africa’s National Yearling sale and sold
for R500,000.
Balmoral Stud, the specialist pre-training operation of Marc and

Nicola Coppez, were also active in the Australian market this year
and offered a good-looking son of Nadeem from a good New
Zealand female line. Half-sister, Flawlessly, the Singapore-based
daughter of Pins is already a dual winner and this colt looks a
Classic horse in the making. Mayfair Speculators took the same
view when signing the docket at R1.3 million.
Progeny of Sebring, the sire sensation in Australia whose sons
have recently dominated big races this season in the form of
Criterion and Dissident, are a rare commodity in South Africa
and there was plenty of interest in Lot 64, consigned by Klawervlei
Stud as agent. A beautifully balanced individual, the colt was
bought for R1.2m by Green Street Bloodstock, the brainchild of
Justin Vermaak, also racing manager for Maine Chance Farms.
Seventh Rock, the sprinting sensation of the mid-2000’s, has
thrown a series of top sprinters in South Africa, including Seventh
Plain, last season’s Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and ante-post
favourite for tomorrow’s Lanzarac Ready To Run Cup worth R2.5m
in Stakes. Lot 41 was most impressive in his gallop and with
Royal Academy, Danehill and Roberto as his first three damsires,
it was not hard to like this colt consigned by Sorrento Stud. He
was knocked down to Cape Thoroughbred Sales chairman, Chris
van Niekerk, for a round R1 million.
Mayfair Speculators found the only High Chaparral offered at
the sale attractive and paid R1 million for the granddaughter of VRC
Oaks winner Arborea. The well-made filly was consigned by Jane
Thomas of Far End Stables, the KZN-based pre-training operation.
Late in the session, a dominant looking daughter of New
Approach made her way into the ring and whilst the bidding was

initially slow, van Niekerk finished the bidding strongly with a
final offer of R1.4 million for Lot 169. New Approach recently
caught the eye of South African owners when New Predator, a
three-year-old colt of his won in facile style in Johannesburg and
looks destined to campaign in the forthcoming Classic races for
prominent local owner Lawrence Wernars.
British owner, Martin Wiggins, is a longstanding client of Joey

colt looks an ideal type to target next year’s Cup race due to be
held over the seven furlongs of Kenilworth Racecourse.
COO, Adrian Todd, commented: “On the back of a successful
Ready To Run Sale in Johannesburg, the Cape Town Sale has also
proven to be a very strong sale with quality horses in demand. I
believe there was a full spectrum of horses on offer, which exceeded
last year’s results. CTS is thrilled to see the continued growth of the
sale and we look forward to next year’s Ready To Run Sales Season.”
The aggregate was R38,930,000 (up 20% on last year), the
average was R229,000 (up 17% on last year) and the median
R140,000 (down 7% on last year). The leading vendor was
Klawervlei Stud with 31 lots sold for over R9m, the leading buyer
was Mayfair Speculators with twelve lots for over R6m and the
leading sire was the late Western Winter with eight lots sold for
over R4 million.
RED CADEAUX PUT DOWN
FOLLOWING CUP INJURY
Red Cadeaux (Cadeaux Genereux) has been put down
after vets reported complications with blood flow to the foot
on the left foreleg he injured at the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup.
Trainer Ed Dunlop said: “This is my saddest day in racing. Red
Cadeaux was a much loved member of our family. He has given
us and the racing public so much joy competing with great
distinction across the world.”
Owner Ronnie Arculli said: “For a race that stops a nation we
were lucky to have a horse that touched a nation. We will miss
Red Cadeaux dearly.”
At the wishes of Mr Arculli, Red Cadeaux’s final resting
place will be at Flemington Racecourse. He finished second
in the Melbourne Cup three times.

eventual second Soriano (Halling) with around 400m to run.
Come the line, the four-year-old daughter of Glenview Stud’s
Shirocco was three-quarters of a length ahead. Third home was
Paradise (Samum), a further eight lengths away.
Progressive in handicaps, Gale Force had contested Stakes
contests on her last two starts, finishing third in the Listed Jockey
Club Rose Bowl and tenth in the Gr.2 British Champions Long
Distance Cup, both of which were won by Flying Officer.
A homebred of Tim Vestey, she is a half-sister to the Gr.1 British
Champions Fillies/Mare Stakes winner Seal Of Approval
(Authorized) and the Gr.3-placed Instance (Invincible Spirit),
out of the winning Dr Devious mare Hannda. This is also the
family of the dual Gr.1 winner and sire Hittite Glory.
Half an hour later, the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit over 2500m for
fillies and mares was run, with the Gestut Ammerland homebred
Sassella (Lope De Vega) recording her first Stakes win.
Spoken To Me (Dylan Thomas) took the field along, before the
Hugo Palmer-trained Twitch (Azamour) took over down the
back straight. She still held sway until halfway up the home
straight, where the winner came with a powerful run down the
outside of runners. She drew away to a length and a quarter win
from Celebre (Peintre Celebre), with the same distance back to
Twitch.
Winner of her maiden at the fourth attempt, Sassella, who is
Lot 176 in the upcoming Arqana Vente d’Elevage, was fourth last
time out in the Listed Prix Panacee at Toulouse. She is a half-sister
to the Gr.3 Prix de Royaumont winner Savanne (Rock Of

WELSH SHADOW CRUISES
TO NEWTON NOVICE VICTORY
The main event at Haydock Park yesterday afternoon was the
Listed Newton Novices’ Hurdle over two miles. The favourite
Welsh Shadow justified his short odds in comfortable style.
The son of Robin Des Champs was positioned in midfield of
the five-strong field, with Viens Chercher (Milan) taking the field
along on an easy lead in atrocious weather conditions. The winner
cruised into the lead at the last and only had to be ridden out to
score by two and a quarter lengths. There was a tremendous
battle for third, with Mardale (Robin Des Champs) getting the
better of Altruism (Authorized), with the pair three and threequarter lengths behind the second, Viens Chercher.
A winner of his NHF race at Wetherby last season, he was
second to last season’s Gr.1 Champion Bumper-fourth Yanworth
on hurdling debut at Exeter earlier this month.
Bred by Hugh O’Connor, Welsh Shadow is a dual Tattersalls
Ireland November Sale graduate, and is a half-brother to the Gr.1
Chase winner Klepht (Great Palm), out of the Persian Mews
mare What A Mewsment, a full-sister to the high-class Gr.2 (then)

EQUINE HERPES VACCINE BACK ON
MARKET IN EARLY DECEMBER
The pharmaceutical company Zoetis has informed the Irish
breeding industry that the equine herpes vaccine (pneumabort-K)
will be back on the market in early December. A shortage of
vaccine in recent months forced sales companies in Ireland and
Britain to take special measures at breeding stock sales to ensure
that un-vaccinated broodmares did not pose a disease risk.
Des Leadon of the Irish Equine Centre said: “Following
representations since September from the ITBF, the EFTBA, national
associations, private stud farms and the veterinary profession, Zoetis
has stated it will have 9,500 doses available in the first week of
December. A similar sized batch will be released in the first week of
January and then 25,000 doses will be available through the German
market in February.”
Plans are being put in place to avoid another shortage in the
future. Leadon said: “There is an agreement that there will be an
ongoing dialogue between Zoetis and the thoroughbred industry on

AUCTION OF STALLION NOMINATIONS
TO SAVE HARAS DE PIN AREA
An auction sale of popular European stallion nominations will
take place at Arqana on Friday, 4th December at 5:30pm. The sale
will be followed by a cocktails in the Deauville sales ring.
The sale will benefit the association Sauvegarde des Terres
d’Elevage which has successfully coordinated the defence of
some of Normandy’s most renowned breeding grounds, around
the Haras du Pin (Orne region), against the establishment of a
toxic waste landfill by Guy Dauphin Environment, a subsidiary of
waste giant Ecore. Over the course of the last four years, a series of
arduous legal and political battles have taken place. 2015 saw
some very important developments unfold, and a positive
outcome is expected in 2016, as the French Minister of
Environment is now actively involved on the subject. None of this
would have been possible without the continued support of
generous donators of stallion nominations, as well of course of
the buyers of nominations. This whole process underlines the
fantastic solidarity that the European racing and breeding
industry has shown towards this cause.
