2016 Community Enrichment Winter Classes held at The Sanilac Career Center 175 Aitken Rd Peck MI 48466 810-648-4700 Looking for a Certain Class? We are always looking for new classes to offer. If you would like to teach a class or if you don’t see the class you are looking for, contact Mary Fraley at 810-648-4700, ext 4266. You will be assured of getting all the latest information on classes as well as early notification as new classes are added! If you need a paper copy sent, call us with your information to keep your name on our list. Note: We will be starting a new mailing list at the beginning of every year. We now accept Credit and Debit Cards Visa, MasterCard and Discover Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) $900 (includes tuition, book & clinical hours) Instructors: Sherry Peters and Jamie Marley The Certified Nurse Aide program is a 10 or 13 week course, which includes 64 hours of class work and 16 hours of clinical work at a medical care facility. Students learn basic health care procedures including pulse rates, taking temperatures, respiration, blood pressure, and patient care. This program will prepare students to take the State test. Next classes Wed & Thurs Jan 13 - March 10 4:30 - 8:30 pm Tuesdays Jan 12 - April 5 3:30 - 9:00 pm American Heart CPR & First Aid Instructor: Pat Beauchamp $60, 2 days for 3 hours each Evening classes are scheduled based on enrollment This CPR class is an American Heart Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers & Heartsaver First Aid training, including AED training. This class will cover adult, infant, and child CPR/AED, and first aid. Learn to identify when CPR is necessary, how to administer it, the CAB's of emergency care, and practice on the CPR mannequin. BLS training is also available –ask for details. Medical Billing Instructor: Deb Sherman Tuesdays, January 12 - March 15 5:30 - 9:30 pm; (10 weeks) Understanding Health Insurance and the guide to billing and reimbursement is all covered in this 10 week course. The objectives are to introduce information about major insurance programs, provide basic knowledge of national diagnosis and procedure coding systems, and simplify the process of completing claims. Students should have had or be taking a coding class or had prior coding experience prior to taking this class. $225 + books ICD-10 Medical Coding Medical Terminology Instructor: Deb Sherman $225 + books Mondays, 5:30 - 9:30 pm; (10 weeks) January 11- March 14 ICD-10 is expected to be implemented soon. Learn how to code with the latest methods. Deb has taken the American Health Information Management Train- the-Trainer and became a Certified ICD-10 trainer. This class will teach ICD-10 Diagnosis coding used in both hospital and physician offices. National Certification is available for students completing the Billing and Coding courses. Instructor: Deb Sherman $225 + books Thursdays 5:30 - 9:30 pm; (10 weeks) January 14 - March 17 This class is designed to teach students easy ways to apply prefixes, learn how to correctly pronounce medical terms, and remember roots and suffixes. Students will learn how the parts of the terms combine to form medical terms. This is a great beginner class for medical students and will help students new to the medical field be successful in future classes. Medical Administrative Assistant $250 + books Instructor: Gerri Armstrong Wednesdays, January 13 - March 30 (12 weeks) 5:00 - 9:00 pm Learn the different rolls of a Medical Administrative Assistant in the hospital and ambulatory care settings. Students will learn the attributes that the Medical Administrative Assistant should strive to develop, the members of the health care team and their roles, techniques to help you communicate effectively and appropriately with patients and families, HIPAA compliance, patient confidentiality, the basics of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Outlook, telephone etiquette, basic ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding, career development and life skills. Upon successful completion of this program, students would be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) national examination. Pharmacy Technician Program $1,199 (includes books) Tuesdays & Thursdays 50 hours + 60 Clinical hours Instructor: Lori Profit, BCPS March 22 - May 17 6:00 - 9:30 pm This comprehensive 50 hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Course content includes: pharmacy medical terminology, history, practice in multiple environments, calculations and measurements, prescriptions and drug names. Through classroom lecture and hands on labs, students will review many areas a Pharmacy Technician will handle including dosage calculations, drug classifications, billing and reimbursement among other items. Clinical Medical Assistant Program $2,599 (includes books) Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday 140 hours + 160 Clinical hours Instructor: Jamie Kadarian, RPI, CMA March 1 - June 7 6:00 - 9:30 pm This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare. This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare and more. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 140 hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements. Note: Upon successful completion of this program, students would be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination. Dental Assistant Program $1,399 (includes books) Mondays and Wednesdays 60 hours + 40 Clinical Hours Instructor: TBA March 14 - May 16 6:00 - 9:30 pm The 60 hour Dental Assisting Program prepares students for entry level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions – Dental Assisting. The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and provide training in the professional skills required to function as an assistant in the dental practice. This course covers key areas in administrative and clinical aspects including dentistry history, the dental office, legal aspects, dental equipment, oral anatomy, patient positioning, dental hand-pieces, sterilization, and many other areas. In addition to entry-level administrative jobs, this course is ideal for students interested in pursuing a future formal Dental Hygienist program. Phlebotomy Technician Program $1,799 (includes books) Mondays and Wednesdays 90 hours Instructor: TBA February 29 - June 8 6:00 - 9:30 pm This 90 hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods. Note: There is no outside externship rotation included with this program. Electronic Health Record Management Program $1,999 Tuesdays and Thursdays 95 hours Instructor: TBA March 1 - June 9 6:00 - 9:30 pm This 95 hour Electronic Health Record (EH R) Management program prepares students to understand and use electronic records in a medical practice. An electronic health record (EH R) includes computerized lifelong healthcare data from a variety sources where every encounter an individual has with the healthcare system is documented and compiled for quick access. Electronic Health Record professionals are educated in the implementation and management of electronic health information using common electronic data interchange systems such as HL7, CDISC, and DICOM. Students will learn through classroom and computer lab training the necessary components consistent with maintaining the medical, legal, accreditation and regulatory requirements of the electronic health record and database. Note: After the successful completion of this program, students will be prepared to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS) exam. HEALTHY COOKING CLASS!! Instructor: Becky Vogel New cooking class coming this spring. Learn how to cook with natural ingredients to help you eat healthier. This will be a hands-on class. Fitness Belly Dancing Instructor: Stacey Mccanham $50 Tuesdays, 5:30 - 6:30 pm January 12 - March 1 (8 weeks) Want to shake up your exercise routine? How about doing some Belly Dancing for fitness? Come enjoy this Belly Dancing class designed to give a great fitness workout and have fun! No previous experience is necessary. Students should wear comfortable clothes and bring water if desired. Belly Dancing Instructor: Stacey Mccanham $50 Wednesdays, 6:30 - 7:30 pm January 12 - March 1 (8 weeks) Learn the basic moves for traditional belly dancing while getting some great exercise. Students will learn the correct posture and muscle control to become proficient at combining moves to perform a beautiful dance. Belly Dancing is for any age, size and shape. Anyone can learn and have fun. No previous experience is necessary. Students should wear comfortable clothes. Additional classes will open if enrollment allows. Oil Painting: Bob Ross Style Instructor: Tracy Stokes $48 (supplies not included) $58 (includes supplies but NOT canvas) Classes held 2nd Monday of each month: Jan 11, Feb 8, and Mar 14 4:30 - 8:30 pm Each class is independent (Cost is per class and Due In Advance) No experience or “talent” is required, just a desire to paint. This painting class teaches the wet-on-wet method of oil painting. Paintings are completed in one session. Students must bring a 16” x 20” canvas, baby wipes, paper towel, & a box for transporting their finished painting home. Call to get your name on the list to get a preview of what will be painted each month. Welding Basics Instructor: Dennis Paschke $175 (includes supplies) Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday 3:30-7:30 pm (20 hours) December 7 - December 15 This class is for entry-level positions in welding and for the experienced welder. Students may try several areas of welding. Skill areas include oxyacetylene welding, cutting and brazing, arc welding, MIG and TIG welding. Certified Welding $1900; 120 hours Instructor Dennis Paschke Monday - Thursday January 11- March 17 (10 weeks); 3:30-6:30 pm (120 hours) Our certified welding class prepares students to become certified in one area in both vertical and overhead positions. Students prepare to take an in-house certification following standards and guidelines from the American Welding Society. Certification is available in either Mig, Tig or Arc Welding. 90% attendance is required for certification. It is strongly recommended that students have some prior experience in welding or have taken the Welding Basics class prior to taking the certification class. Reiki I Instructor: Stacey Maccanham $75 Thursdays, 6:00 - 8:00 pm January 21 - February 4 (3 weeks) Reiki is a form of hands-on, natural healing that uses universal life energy. Reiki is an alternative therapy for holistic health with benefits including stress reduction and relaxation which help the body heal. In this class students will learn the basics of Reiki, the history behind the process, and the hand positions used during the process. Students will also learn how to do a self-treatment. Handouts are included with the class. At the completion of this class, students will receive a certificate for Reiki I. Reiki II Instructor: Stacey Maccanham $75 Thursdays, 6:00 - 8:00 pm February 18 - March 3 (3 weeks) Students will learn distance healing and Reiki symbols in this three week course. Students must have already taken a Reiki I course. Reiki III Instructor: Stacey Maccanham $300 Thursdays, 6:00 - 8:00 pm March 10 - March 24 (3 weeks) Students will become a Master in this Reiki III class. Students will learn how to give Attunements and learn how to set up and teach a class to other students. Animal Reiki Instructor: Stacey Maccanham $25 Thursday, 6:00 - 8:00 pm February 11 (1 week) Small and large animals can also benefit from a Reiki treatment. Students will learn how to give a Reiki treatment to all types of animals in this class. Students must take a Reiki I class prior to taking this class. Basic Microsoft Word 2010 Instructor: TBD Classes coming later this spring Take your word processing skills to a new level. The basics of word will be briefly discussed. Students will learn to format documents and prepare documents for presentation. Students will also learn to use word for research and mail merge. This class will prepare students to take the Microsoft Specialist exam in this area. Basic Microsoft Excel 2010 Instructor: TBD Classes coming later this spring Are you confused about Excel? Learn the basic about managing columns, rows and formats. Students will also learn about basic formulas, functions, and charts. Some advanced functions will be covered, also. This class will prepare students to take the Microsoft Specialist exam in this area. Computers for Beginners Instructor: Pam Smith Bring CD or USB flash drive to save your data and practice for all classes. Also, bring your laptop to class if you have one but not necessary for class. 2 hour classes $12 each Thursdays 6:00 - 8:00 pm Feb 18 Learning to use Windows 10 Students will learn the differences between Windows 10 and older versions of the Windows programs and how to move around in this operating system. Students will also learn what has been updated or changed in this newer version. Feb 25 Learning to use Windows part 1 - Understanding your equipment Students will start with learning the basic components of a computer, mouse, keyboard, their functions, and simple shortcuts. Computer terms and terminology relating to software and applications will be covered as well as the difference between files and folders, how to create, name and save files and how to cut and paste text. Lots of tips and tricks and hidden features to make computing tasks seem effortless will also be covered if time allows. March 3 Learning to use Windows part 2 - Create to access This class will continue the basics of Windows. Students will learn how to access pro grams, create and organize files, move files by dragging and dropping, learn how and where to save your work and how to find it again. “Save” and “save as” files will also be explained along with tips and shortcuts that can be applied to everyday computing. March 10 Learning to use Windows part 3 - Personalization & Programs Students will learn how to personalize an email account, set printer settings and delete/add tool bars to suit personal preferences depending whether it is your new computer at work or a laptop used for social media and emails. Lots of short cuts with more tips and tricks to increase confidence and efficiency will also be included. March 17 Learning to use Windows part 3 - Maintain with confidence Students will learn the basics of maintaining their computer and where to go for information about their computer. The importance and necessity of regular updates and anti-virus programs will also be discussed. System backup and cleanup tools will be explored and students will discover how removing old programs, cleaning off their desk top and deleting old e-mails can speed up their computer. Tips and tricks to make your computer run cooler and smoother will also be discussed. Camera and Photo Classes Instructor: Janet Confer Photoshop and More $125, Tuesdays, 6:00 - 8:00 pm (8 weeks) January 26 - March 15 Enhance your digital photos, restore old family pictures or just print with confidence using these professional photo editing tools. Get the most out of digital imaging by learning Adobe Photoshop Elements 11. This is an easy-to-learn, easy-to-use version that is very user-friendly! Photo Restoration $40, Tuesdays, 6:00 - 8:00 pm (2 weeks) March 22 - March 29 Restore and repair your old photos with Photoshop Elements. Students will learn how to use Photoshop Elements to bring new life to their old photos. Prior experience with Photoshop Elements is required. Photo Calendars $60, Tuesdays, 6:00 - 8:00 pm (3 weeks) April 12 - April 20 In this session students will learn how to create and design calendars using their personal photos. Learn how to make a special, meaningful gift for your family members or you to enjoy throughout the year. Prior experience with Photoshop Elements is required. Going Digital $45, Tuesdays, 6:00 - 8:00 pm (4 weeks) May 3 - May 24 Do you have a digital camera that does really cool things but you need help? Come spend some time with an expert who can have you taking professional, fun, artistic pictures in no time. Be sure to bring your digital camera with you. Sewing Basics Instructor: Carol Dorman Would you like to learn how to sew using a sewing machine? You can join the class even if you don’t have a machine yet. We will try to make sure everyone has one to practice on. Sewing Basics I $45 Wednesdays, 6:00 - 9:00 pm January 13 - January 27 Students will learn the basics of using their sewing machine. Bring your own machine and the owner’s manual (if you have it). This course will cover the basics of using a sewing machine along with how to make a pillow cover and a tote. Students should bring their machine to the all classes. Materials needed for the following classes will be discussed the first night. Sewing Basics II $45 Wednesdays, 6:00 - 9:00 pm February 3 - February 17 Learn to make more projects with your sewing machine. In this three week session, students will learn how to make a table runner, an apron, and an infinity scarf. Great ideas for future hand-made gifts to share with love. Material lists will be available prior to class starting, Sewing Basics III $45 Wednesdays, 6:00 - 9:00 pm February 24 - March 9 Students will improve their sewing abilities with this class. Learn how to enhance your wardrobe and create your own personal style. Students will learn how to add lace to the bottom of a shirt and how to shorten jeans without losing the original hem in this three week session. Getting Paid to Talk Making Money with Your Voice-An Introduction to Professional Voice-overs 6:30-9:00 pm Thursday, February 25 $20 Have you ever been told that you have a great voice? This exciting class will explore numerous aspects of voice over work for television, film, radio, audio books, documentaries and the internet in your area. This will cover all the basics, including how to prepare the all-important demo, how to be successful and earn great income in this exciting field, Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and to hear examples of demos recorded by professional voice actors. Class participants will even have a chance to record a commercial script under the direction of our Voicecoaches.com producer! This class is informative, lots of fun, and a great first step for anyone with an interest in voice acting professionally. Register early! Space is limited. Instructor: Linda Bombard February 2 Growing Herbs for Pollinators: Learn which herbs are most helpful to our pollinators. Instructor: Louise Jensen February 9 Making the Most of Spring Bulbs: Learn the best bulbs to use for a Beautiful Spring and how to grow them. Instructor: Vicki Duley February 16 Keep on Growing!: Learn how to garden with using low maintenance Shrubs, perennials, and trees. Instructor: Linda Bombard February 23 Square Foot Gardening: Learn how to grow your own food using less space and less money. Instructor: Merry Martin Line Dancing Lessons Instructor: Carole Daugherty Thursdays, February 4 - March 10 (6 weeks) Basics: 6:30 - 8:00 pm $8.00 per session Beyond Basics: 7:30 - 9:00 pm $8.00 per session Both classes: 6:30 - 9:00 pm $12.00 per session Learn the basics to Country Line Dancing. This class will start you out at the beginning of each dance with easy steps that you can build on each week. Don’t worry if you miss one, you will be able to catch up in no time! Soon you will be dancing like the pros. A great form of exercise! Pay in Advance & Save 6 weeks - $40 (Both Classes - $64) NOTE: Basic Class has slower paced line dances for beginners. Students are welcome to use the Career Center computers during designated hours to complete their class assignments. Classes have online instructor support and all books and supplies are included in the cost. Students are given 6 months to complete the programs with an extension if needed.
