It continues to be a favorite stop for travelers passing through. In 1901, the Union Pacific Railroad helped to establish the town of Rock River. Today, Rock River continues to hold the same historic charm as in years past. Centennial remains the gateway to the Snowy Range and entices visitors with its rustic charm. It has become a year round resort community with both winter and summer activities. 2 Photo Courtesy of Virginia Vonlunen Photo by Joyce Powell Albany is tucked into a canyon at the base of the Snowy Range Mountains with majestic peaks soaring up to 12,000 feet. The Albany Lodge is a getaway for all seasons. Travelers can participate in a wide variety of winter sports, summer camping, fishing or fall hunting. Laramie is named after a French Canadian mountain man Jacques La Ramee. La Ramee was a fur trapper who loved to explore Wyoming. He brought many fellow fur trappers to the Laramie Area. The Ivinson mansion, home to Edward and Jane Ivinson, was completed in 1892. Edward Ivinson was a store owner, banker and political figure in Laramie. His wife, Jane, started one of the first churches in the area. Inspired while fly fishing in the Laramie Area, Thomas Edison came up with the idea of the filament lightbulb. Home to the first electrical plant in the Rocky Mountains, Laramie lit up the night sky like a gem, earning the nickname “Gem City of the Plains.” Real History By 1880, Wyoming was a territory and a frequent stop along the Union Pacific Railroad. This wild west town’s first mayor lasted only three weeks, declaring Laramie “ungovernable.” Photos courtesy of the American Heritage Center The Overland Trail stage route, which ran through the Laramie area, was used by settlers heading west until the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1868. 3 Recreational opportunities in the Laramie area are endless: camping, hiking, wilderness backpacking, horseback riding, fishing, boating, wildlife viewing, rock climbing, mountain biking, four-wheeling and hunting. Professional and amateur photographers find the area a feast for their lenses. From the jumbled weathered rock formations of Vedauwoo to the incredible grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest is outdoor perfection. 4 Photo by Dan Kunkel Vedauwoo has some of the best climbing in the nation. Climbers come from all over the world to sample some of the best crack climbing called “off-widths”. Photo by Kyle Bond Photo by Sandra Sontag Photo by Allison Pluda Photo by Allison Pluda Bring your camera and fishing pole and capture memories of the wildlife that southeast Wyoming has to offer. The Rocky Mountains and the American West are awe inspiring with their wide open spaces, big adventures and beautiful scenery. Get out and rent an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and take on the mountain trails where adventure is around every turn. 5 Albany County is a winter wonderland with some of the best backcountry, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the nation. Uncrowded downhill skiing and snowboarding is normal at Snowy Range Ski and Recreation Area, a short 40 minute drive west of Laramie. 6 Photo by Barb Page The Snowy Range is one of the finest snowmobiling areas in the country. Discover more than 200 miles of groomed trails and 120 miles of ungroomed but signed trails. No area can boast of more consistent powder. Photo by Nuray Packard Photo by Barb Pa ge Photo by Kyle Bond The Snowy Range is nestled in the beautiful Medicine Bow Routt National Forest of the Rocky Mountains. This pristine setting is the perfect backdrop for a winter getaway. Go to www.snowyrangeski.com for information about the Snowy Range Ski and Recreation Area. 7 The Laramie Plains Museum is located in the beautiful historic Ivinson Mansion, which was built in 1892. The museum houses the largest collection of hand carved furniture made in Wyoming. 603 Ivinson Ave. 307-742-4448. The American Heritage Center is primarily an archival center of rare books, historical manuscripts, research materials on American history, culture and more. This building also houses the UW Art Museum, which offers rotating exhibits from its collection of 7,000 works. Also, there are traveling exhibitions every summer with the visitor in mind. Admission is free. 111 Willet Drive Heritage Center: 307-766-4114 Art Museum: 307-766-6622 Real History Louisa Ann Swain was the first woman to vote in a general election in the United States on Sept. 6, 1870, in Laramie. 8 UW Geological Museum has one of only five full brontosaurus skeletons in the world. The museum also houses the skeleton of the predator Allosaurus, among many others. Admission is free. 1000 E. University Ave. (see map pg. 13) 307-766-4218. The Wyoming Women’s History House was constructed in 2003 to memorialize these extraordinary events that gave Wyoming its nickname, “The Equality State”. The History House contains exhibits, artifacts, and memorabilia that honor these and other notable Wyoming women whose achievements have made state and national history. Map and Locations of Museums in Albany County can be found on page 13. Photo by R.L. Wolverton Photo by Tim Chestnut The Ames Monument was completed in 1882 at a cost of $65,000. The Union Pacific Railroad Company built this monolithic 60-ft. high granite pyramid. It stands at 8,247 feet, the highest elevation on the original transcontinental route. The Wyoming Territorial Park is home to the only prison to ever house Butch Cassidy, one of the most infamous outlaws in the West. This western heritage park is built around the beautifully restored territorial prison of the 1870s. Travelers can walk the cold hallways that over 1,000 prisoners called home. The Lincoln Monument between Laramie and Cheyenne was commissioned by the state of Wyoming in 1959 to honor the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. The monument marks the highest point on the old Lincoln Highway. It was moved to its present location in 1969, when Interstate 80 was completed. The World War I monument stands on the corner of 5th Street and Ivinson Avenue. 9 Laramie Jubilee Days is an annual celebration of Wyoming statehood. The most exciting week of the year, Jubilee Days is filled with activities to please the entire family, from rodeos and bull riding to carnivals, fireworks, street dances and a Downtown Brewfest. Photo courtesy of Kelly Yates Wyoming’s premier endurance mountain bike race. The Enduro is a challenging 70+ miles which climbs over 8,600 vertical feet. The entirety of the race is at elevations over 7,500 feet. Visit www.laramieenduro.org for details. Photo by Linnaea Kimble A three day festival filled with good music, good people and good times. Held over Labor Day Week-end, this festival is quickly becoming a destination for folks all over. It is full of high energy with the audience in mind. Enjoy the ease of two stages, (just turn your chair when one act is through and immediately start enjoying the next) astro turf to keep the crowd comfortable and vendors of all kinds to keep the crowd happy. Mark it on your calendar and join us for a fantastic three days. Real History 10 In 1936, beloved U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited Laramie while running for his second presidential term. Photo by Trey Sherwood Every Friday afternoon, July through September, the streets of downtown Laramie fill with vendors for the Farmers’ Market. Fresh produce, baked goods, arts and crafts, and downtown entertainment. Real History The largest man-made monument in Wyoming is War Memorial Stadium & Fieldhouse on the University of Wyoming campus, honoring the veterans of World War II. The University of Wyoming competes at the NCAA Division I level, which provides opportunities for outstanding athletic competition. Visitors can watch football games in War Memorial Stadium (right) at 7200 feet. The university provides a vast array of cultural programs including internationally acclaimed artists, Pulitzer-prize winning authors, awardwinning musicians, renowned lecturers, and eminent performers. UW’s Art Museum, the American Heritage Center, and the UW Geological Museum are among the local venues giving abundant cultural opportunities. Pictured left is the Arts & Sciences (A&S) building, in the foreground is the “University Family” sculpture in Prexy’s Pasture. Real History Wyoming’s only state four-year institution of higher learning, UW was established in 1886 and classes first opened in Fall of 1887. 190 areas of study are available through seven colleges and multiple interdisciplinary institutes and schools. With a small student/faculty ratio and 91% of classes taught by faculty and lecturers, UW is among the nation's top universities ranked by U.S. News & World Report and Forbes.
