WELCOME CLUB OF HENDERSON COUNTY MAY 2016 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful colors of spring. What a wonderful time with all the flowering trees, shrubs and flowers. It was a beautiful day for the Golf Cart Scavenger Hunt with 27 “hunters” at the Cumming Cove Country Club on March 29. A delicious lunch was provided. Winners of the “hunt” were the team of Lois Hansen, Jean Dortmund, Elena Gregory and Connie Allen. Please see Charity Matters for more about the two Afghans made by Welcome Club members and how raffle tickets are being sold to win these beautiful Afghans. Diane Fitzgerald and I attended the 4th Annual Celebration of Courage for Safelight on April 6 at the Kenmore Country Club. With all of the people in attendance, I think it was a sold out event. The keynote speaker was Tonier Cain, author, advocate and trauma survivor, who gave an empowering and powerful talk on the trauma of her experiences and how the impact of one individual can change the life of another person. Our local newspaper had a great article which was very insightful and captured the whole event. At 10 AM the April 19th Coffee and Conversation will be at the home of Carole Repici. There is more information later in this newsletter. Be sure to call or email Martha Rumbough to let her know you will attend. Until next month, take care and enjoy spring. SAGE GREEN AFGHAN, CREATED BY JODY TURNER Charity Matters By Diane Tokarski Our March 29th Scavenger Hunt was great fun and provided an opportunity for Welcome Club members to meet Safelight staff members Tanya Blackford, Executive Director, and Laresa Griffin, Director of Development. Many of you brought much needed paper products and a vacuum cleaner to this event. Thank you so much for your generosity--those who are being housed at the Safelight shelter facility appreciate your kindness. At the luncheon, Lynne Cigal and Susan Brier, members of Welcome Club’s Knitting Group, Knit 2gether, presented Tanya Blackford with the beautiful ecrucolored quilt afghan, pictured below. Members of Knit2gether who contributed their time and talents in creating individual quilt squares are: Mary Boteilho, Susan Brier, Lynne Cigal, Lucy Cumston, Sandra Fey, Jan Hexdall, Linn Parris, Marge Rourke, Peggy Smith and Gail Walter. This afghan is on display at the KNIT2GETHER: FROM LEFT TO Purple Ribbon RIGHT: LUCY CUMSTON, GAIL Resale Shop, located WALTER, JAN HEXDALL, SUSAN on 5th Avenue and BRIER AND LINN PARRIS Church Street. Please visit the store and purchase a few chances—you might be the lucky winner! All profits from this raffle will benefit Safelight’s programs. In addition to this beautiful quilt, Jody Turner, also a member of Welcome Club and an expert knitter, donated a sage green afghan she created. Chances to win Jody’s afghan were available at the Scavenger Hunt luncheon and will also be sold at the August Game Day and at our Holiday Luncheon, all proceeds to benefit Safelight. The lucky winner for Jody’s afghan will be New request from Safelight: The Child Advocacy Center, under Safelight’s direction, is in need of new stuffed animals. These toys are presented to children upon their initial visit to the Center, to help alleviate some of the tension and anxiety they feel. If you are planning to attend the April 19th Coffee and Conversation at Carole Repici’s home, please consider bringing along a new stuffed animal to brighten the life of a child. Little gestures of kindness mean so much to those in need. Interest group members: please consider purchasing and bringing new stuffed animals to your next meeting. I will be happy to drop by and pick these up, as well as any of the items listed below, at your meeting or at a convenient time. Continued needs: Feminine products, particularly pads (not ultrathin) Toilet paper, facial tissue, paper towels Similac Advance baby formula New or gently used vacuum cleaners Food items that kids enjoy, i.e., Spaghettios, pasta and quick meal items. Often times clients don’t have money when they arrive at the shelter and the items on hand may not be what the children like. Thank you for helping those who need a hand up.
