in 1993 and quickly started looking for a giant tomato to feature
in my new catalog. Soon I heard about Minnie Zaccaria’s 6pound Big Zac that won the 1997
New Jersey Championship. After
winning the national Week’s
Giant Grower’s Contest in 1998,
Minnie and I agreed that Big Zac
would be my exclusive for years

delicious as ever! Bred from
flawless ancestors – a huge red
beefsteak and a gigantic pink

enormous, meaty, tasty fruits with
excellent disease resistance.
Flavor is classic “real-tomato,”
slightly acidic, full-bodied and
tangy. The only variety to grow

Dear Gardening Friend:
Welcome to my Spring 2015 catalog, where seeds &
shipping charges don't have to cost so much! After selling
my Totally Tomatoes and R.H. Shumways catalogs in 1999,
I began my new Seeds ‘n Such catalog just last year, and I
thank literally thousands of you for making my first year
back in business since 1999 a resounding success!
Your most frequent request was for more choices, so
I've added a full line of vegetable seeds to now include over
450 varieties! I’ve always specialized in tomato and pepper
seeds, though, so please try my exclusive on-the-vine "Sugar
Cluster Hybrid" to respond to the craze sweeping Europe!
Want to grow the biggest tomato in your entire state? I first
introduced "Big Zac" in 1998 – for 3 to 4-lb. tomatoes, this
is the only one to grow! (Both on Front Cover)
It’s great to be back! Try us for all the newest
(and heirloom!) varieties, all served up with
old-timey integrity, service and value!

The Prettiest Tomatoes Ever?
Artisan Series. It took California breeder Fred Hempel
years to develop a brand-new series of cherry tomatoes bred
solely for big, pure-tomato flavor and delivered in unusual
shapes and unique colors! Local chefs working in expensive
restaurants rave about both the real-tomato taste and the
arresting appearance: stripes and blushes in round and grapeshaped cherry fruits. Grow your own to experience the same
remarkably sweet, juicy flavor as enjoyed by Western diners!

“The absolute ultimate in home-garden tomatoes!”
Blue Ribbon Hybrid Series. That's how breeders and trial gardeners
alike describe our Blue Ribbon Series, with smooth, blemish-free fruits
without ugly shoulders and big blossom scars. And the flavor? "Better than
anything you've ever grown! Even tastier than Big Beef!" Combine their
"real tomato" flavor with exceptional and continuous yields, meaty texture,
beautiful appearance and strong built-in disease resistance, and it's easy to see
why we call the Blue Ribbons the best we've ever seen! Our exclusive, of course!
Early Blue Ribbon Hybrid VFF. Original Blue Ribbon Hybrid
55 days. Earlier and bigger than Early VFF. 71 days. Colossal, beefsteak-size,
Girl! Super flavor and prolific yields
only 8 weeks after transplanting make
this our best early tomato for those who
must grow the first ripe tomato of the
summer! Vigorous vines yield uniform,
round, 5 to 7-oz., deep red fruits with
excellent shelf life. Sublime flavor, tangy
yet sweet. Superb disease resistance.
Best if staked. Indeterminate. #102.
NEW! Sunny Blue Ribbon
Hybrid VFNT. 70 days. The newest
member of the Blue Ribbon family is
neither gold nor orange, but a bright
lemon yellow! Big, 6 to 7-oz. fruits are
juicy, sweet and mild - the mildest of all
the Blue Ribbons. Vigorous, diseaseresistant plants set fruits over an
extended harvest season. A striking color
contrast in fresh salads, and perfect for
those who can't tolerate the acidity in
most red tomatoes. Determinate. #104.
Tomato Disease Resistance
Many tomato variety names in
this catalog are followed with
letters like "VFFNT," which
indicate the diseases to which this
particular variety is naturally
resistant. Check with your local
extension service to determine
which diseases might affect your
crop. Then choose appropriate
varieties from this list which
indicates the resistance you need:
V: Verticillium Wilt
F: Fusarium Wilt, Race 1
FF: Fusarium Wilt, Races 1, 2
FFF: Fusarium Wilt, Races 1, 2, 3
N: Nematodes
T: Tobacco Mosaic Virus
A: Alternaria Stem Canker

lots of juice and gel. Strong disease
resistance means wide adaptability.
Perfect when grown in cages or on short
stakes, but may also be allowed to ramble
on the ground. Determinate. #103.

Tomato plants are either
determinate or indeterminate.
Determinate types grow to a certain
height and then stop, yielding their
harvest over a short 4 to 6-week period.
Indeterminate types grow and flower
throughout the season, producing smaller
harvests at any one time, but bearing
over a much longer season.

Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks
(tomatoes) or 8 to 10 weeks (peppers)
before planting outside. Sow seed 1/4-inch
deep in shallow containers in a sterilized
seed-starting mix. Keep moist. Tomato
seedlings emerge in 7 to 14 days, with
pepper seedlings taking 15 to 30 days
(super-hot peppers take longer). Bottom
heat may be needed. Transplant to
individual pots when seedlings have at
least 2 pairs of leaves. "Harden" seedlings

Indigo Series! Now in Four Shapes and Sizes!
Our Indigo Series proves that tomatoes can be extra healthy and taste great! This series has high
levels of anthocyanins, antioxidants that protect against disease and early aging. This substance
allows these varieties to develop a deep purple skin whenever exposed to direct sun, but they need
to be fully ripe to create good flavor. The fruits ripen only when they soften, when the bottom
turns from green to deep red. Our healthiest tomatoes yet! All Indigo varieties are indeterminate.

GRAFTING ROOTSTOCK
You’d love to try Grafted Tomato
Plants but hate the $8 cost per
plant? Then Graft Your Own!
Grafting vegetable plants is just now
a big rage in the US, but has been
practiced for generations in Europe.
Grafting joins the top of the desired
plant – the scion – to the root system
of another plant – the rootstock. As the
two plants fuse, the remarkable flavor
of the fruits from the scion combines
with the vigor and disease resistance of
the rootstock to produce a plant better
than either parent. The grafted plant
offers greater yields, larger fruits, an
extended harvest season and greater
resistance to diseases and pests.

Hot Peppers, But Barely Warm!
Follow these steps to improve your chances to germinate super-hot peppers, which are much
harder to start than tomatoes or even other hot peppers. First, bottom heat is essential (a hot
house is not a substitute for bottom heat!). Second, super-hots can take up to a full month to
germinate, so be patient! Third, we provide actual germination results within each pepper’s
description. Use these results to determine how many seedlings you can expect from one packet.

The World's Fiercest Super-Hot Peppers! (Cont. from p.31)
Trinidad
Moruga Scorpion
Bhut Jolokia
Congo Black
Red Savina
Scotch Bonnet
Habanero Mustard
The title of "World's Hottest Pepper" depends on whose results you believe. We use data from New Mexico State's famed
Chile Pepper Institute (CPI for short), which performs its own testing based on findings on the average heat level from
an entire field of hot peppers. CPI finds great variability in heat levels, even in fruits from the same plant! We prefer
CPI's approach to that of other testing agencies like Guinness World Records, which has no testing labs of its own and
bases its results on only one fruit. Numbers like 1 in front of each variety below are CPI's current heat rankings.
All "super-hots" pack extreme heat. Use caution and keep away from the eyes! They are also very hard to germinate.
We urge you to moisten "super-hot" seeds with our Seed-Starting Kit found on the Order Form across from p. 18!
