P
amela Jordan, head of school at
the Chicago Academy for the Arts,
will become the next president of
the Idyllwild Arts Foundation. Jordan
will begin at Idyllwild Arts in July 2014.
“I am thrilled that Pamela has accepted the position of president. IAF is
a marvelous institution with a legacy of
commitment to creativity and with an
equally remarkable future at the forefront
of arts education for all ages,” said IAF
Board Chair Faith Raiguel in her letter
announcing Jordan’s appointment. “She
brings rich experience and a history of
visionary leadership that is uniquely suited to ensure the academy and summer
program thrive and continue to fulfill
the IAF mission.”
Jordan has a bachelor of music degree

was surprised late Wednesday afternoon when the Buddha, stolen from his property
on Saturday, Dec. 14, was
returned. And, it seems that
the Town Crier had a hand
in its return by publishing
the photo and story about its
theft in the Dec. 19 issue. “A
family member saw it in the
paper,” said Williams.
“Basically, the person who
stole it showed up, fessed up
and tried to make amends
and gave us the statue back,”
said Williams. “It’s kind of
a happy ending, but at the
same time, with all the thefts
in town, we do take this
seriously.
“We’re really glad the
statue is back,” said Williams.
“It reminds me of some
Buddhist ideals of compassion, making amends, taking
responsibility. On one level
it seems like that kind of
story.”

The Idyllwild Fire Protection District is soliciting community members to join its Finance Committee. Fire Chief
Patrick Reitz says interested citizens will be considered at
the fire commission’s Jan. 14 meeting.
An application and the resolution establishing the
committee’s function and compostion can be found at
the district’s website, http://idyllwildfire.com.
The application asks for name, contact information,
years of residence, the reason for wanting to serve and
any experience or training.
Reitz said completed applications should be returned
to the station by Friday, Jan. 10, 2014.
“The board will decide if additional time and/or more
apps are needed at the meeting,” he added.

Forest Service to
receive Coast Guard
air tankers
By J.P. Crumrine
News Editor
Late last week, the U.S. Senate passed the National
Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2014 (H.R. 3304),
which included language that Senators Dianne Feinstein
(D-Calif.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) submitted transferring 22 military aircraft to the Forest Service to battle
major wildfires.
Under the defense bill passed Thursday night, seven
surplus HC-130H Hercules aircraft will be sent to the
Forest Service as large air tankers and 15 C-23B Sherpa
aircraft will serve as smokejumper and cargo transports.
The transfer of the HC-130H aircraft nearly doubles the
number of large air tankers, which the Forest Service
operates today.
A U.S. Government Accountability Office report released
in August warned that the number of Forest Service large
air tankers dropped from 44 aircraft in 2003 to eight
aircraft in 2013.
“I am pleased the amendment I cosponsored with Sen.
McCain to transfer seven HC-130H planes from the Coast
Guard to the Forest Service was included in the defense
authorization bill that passed the Senate [Thursday]
night,” Sen. Feinstein said. “These seven planes combined
can carry over 21,000 gallons of water or fire retardant
to help combat dangerous forest fires. Given California’s
worsening risk of forest fires — as evidenced by the
ongoing Pfeiffer Fire near Big Sur — this transfer is a
critical step to help address our ability to defend forests
and communities from the threat of wildfires.”

HUSD president has Idyllwild connections
By J.P. Crumrine
News Editor
The 2014 Hemet Unified School District president will
be Trustee Paul Bakkom of Area 2. He was elected to the
board in November 2010, defeating incumbent Phyllis Petri,
and his term expires in December 2014. Ross Valenzuela
is the new vice president of the board.
Bakkom has a very good opinion of the Idyllwild community, and not just because his wife, Holly Guntermann,
is the former physical education teacher at the school.
In July, after long-time Idyllwild Trustee Bill Sanborn
retired, Bakkom and the other five HUSD trustees interviewed four candidates to replace Sanborn and selected
Vic Scavarda. Besides Scavarda, the other three candidates
were John Graham, Robert Righetti and Dr. Charles “Chip”
Schelly.
“I was so impressed with the four people from the
community who stepped forward,” he commented. “All
had something to offer. Although I knew Vic before, I still
remember all their names. It says a lot about Idyllwild as
a community.”
Bakkom started teaching in 1967. He grew up in Banning and graduated from San Diego State University. He
taught first in Juneau, Alaska, before beginning his Hemet
career in 1973.
While proud of his teaching achievements, Bakkom is
not chained to the past. Yet he recognizes the cyclicality
of education and the common concerns of parents and
leaders in this state, country and world.
For example, he asked, “What’s happened to cursive
[writing]?” After an HUSD award event last year, he received many “Thank you” notes. Most were sent as emails,
and several were printed, but only one was written.
“How will they learn to spell or know the difference
between homonyms, such
as their, there and they’re,
if they rely on spell-check?”
he posed.
He went on to relate this
phenomenon to a current
worry in China that the use
of a keyboard will impair
children’s abilities to write
the language’s complex characters.
During his tenure as
president, he wants 2014 Paul Bakkom, new president
graduates to be able to read
of the Hemet Unified School
his signature on their diploma. “It’s a bridge to the past District board.
and a keyboard function,” he
said.
The past is how he navigates the future. When he began
his teaching career, teachers were guided by a course of
study. This is what students in each grade were supposed
to know or to understand, he explained.
Today, educational professionals are calling this the
Common Core of Standards. The course of study evolved
through several other iterations to become today’s guidepost.
“It’s just a new name,” Bakkom declared. “It sounds
like a huge, marvelous new thing, but it’s just a common
standards applied nationwide. It’s not complicated.”
Teachers and administrators have been through this
change before. Bakkom compared it to what a local Realtor
once told him. “You’re not a real Realtor in Idyllwild until
you’ve sold a house three times. You’re not a teacher until
you’ve seen the same concept at the start of your career
and at the end of your career.”
While he sees the value of establishing standards across
the country, Bakkom is not ceding the teaching function to
the state or federal officials. “There should be local control.
The teacher will recognize how fast each student learns
and how to motivate them as individuals. Standards just
put us on the same page rather than 50 different ones,”
Bakkom said.
Some students develop reading skills using phonics as a
tool, others rely on sight and some use both, he explained.
“Hopefully, common core will get us away from scripted
lessons.”
Bakkom described the ability to teach as “like performing arts. Each performance is different depending on the
cast.”
Bakkom recognizes that HUSD’s financial problems are
beginning to abate and to improve. With these changes,
he hopes the district can restore some of the programs
cut or eliminated in the past few years.
For example, HUSD used to pay for transportation to
special events, such as Pathfinder’s Ranch, and subsidize
the cost. Eventually, these costs became full responsibility
of the students’ parents or the local Parent-Teacher Association.
“Parents are swamped with fundraising. It never ends,”
Bakkom lamented. “Fundraising at the school shouldn’t
determine who goes or not.”
While Idyllwild students still go to Joshua Tree, Astrocamp or Catalina, other schools have canceled these events
because of lack of money. “I want to go back to what we
did — the district pays for busing,” Bakkom urged.
These are a sample of the goals Bakkom hopes have
been achieved when he hands the president’s gavel to
Valenzuela next December.

Organization supports
animal services in wildfires
Riverside County is seeking more volunteers for
the Riverside Emergency Animal Rescue System
(REARS). The group is a network of volunteers
trained by Riverside County Animal Services to assist the department in large-scale emergencies such
as wildfires. The volunteers are dispatched through
Animal Services’ command structure.
The next orientation meeting is Saturday, Jan. 11, at
the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter at
6851 Van Buren Blvd. An orientation for all prospective shelter and REARS-interested volunteers begins
at 10:30 a.m. and runs until about noon. REARS
signups then break into a separate orientation. The
orientation ends at about 5 p.m.
Only those volunteers that have been certified can

assist when REARS is called into action, said Rita
Gutierrez, Animal Services’ field division commander.
“When we get large-scale events, we really rely on
our REARS members to help us respond fast and safely
when it comes to saving and protecting and caring
for the county’s larger animals,” Gutierrez said. “One
common factor when wildfires happen is the interest
from many people that want to help. However, we
only use our certified REARS members because they
have been through all the crucial training and safety
exercises.”
For more information, e-mail to Gutierrez at [email protected]. The REARS volunteer application
form can be found at www.rcrears.com/member.htm.
The Web site for REARS is located at www.rcrears.com.

No place like home …
W h i l e
many of
us celebrate the
h o l i d ay s
with family and
friends,
some individuals fall into
an inner depression. This
pallor of joylessness can be
very personal and deep, particularly when family is far
away, ties are cut or family
simply have passed on.
We are blessed that people
have places to go here where
they are welcome during
the holidays — American
Legion’s senior luncheon
and Christine Nordella’s free
Thursday lunches, courtesy
of Fairway Market, beginning this week at St. Hugh’s
Episcopal Church.
This sense of care in how
we treat people mirrors the
Idyllwild I love in times of
trouble. I know you’ve heard
it said so many times that
when you face difficulties in
life, there is no greater place
to be than in Idyllwild.
This summer, the Mountain Fire destroyed our
neighbors’ homes and animals. Our town evacuated.
The potential disaster more
or less crept up on us. We
helped each other through
it and came to the aid of
those in Apple Canyon and
May Valley.
Our heroes were those
who turned around and
offered a place to stay, food,
clothing, money and other
help, as well as the firefighters who painted “the
Mountain red” and gave us
back our town.
So many other locals have
had other tragedies hit them
— such as losing a spouse
or suffering medical difficulties — and felt comfort
from the selfless residents
offering support through
friendships, food, chores or
whatever was needed.
So, if 2014 will mean
harder times for those of
us the fire did not touch,
we are sure to see Idyllwild
at its best. What other town
of nearly 4,000 people has
more than 120 nonprofits
that include strong service
organizations specifically
to aid and strengthen the
community?
In hard times, there is
no better place to be than
Idyllwild.

Contest judge
This week you are again challenged to identify the
particular spot depicted in this Hill photograph. It might
be the exterior of a building or surrounding grounds of
a commercial, governmental or nonprofit premises, or a
public place in Idyllwild, Pine Cove, Fern Valley or Mountain Center. The prize is tickets to the Rustic Theatre,
your picture in the Town Crier, and life membership in
the No. 1 Hillbilly Detective Agency. If there is no winner
during a week, the ticket prizes will accumulate.
Open to all ages. It doesn’t matter how you submit your
entry, as long as it’s in writing, delivered by noon Monday
(or Tuesday if the Town Crier office is not open Monday)
to the Town Crier, attn: Jack, and you convince the judge
that you found the exact spot. Just saying something like,
“The wall around ________ restaurant” is not enough.
You must describe the actual spot by pacing off or some
other specific description. Taking your own photograph
of the spot would be ideal, but is not necessary to win
as long as you persuade the judge that you have found
the exact spot depicted in the contest photo. The decision
of the judge is final. If there is no winner, clues will be
given and the weekly prizes will accumulate. This is not
a race. If there is more than one person with a correct
answer, a drawing will determine the winner, so keep your
answer to yourself. Check out this week’s new photo.

Free health clinic
at Town Hall
Intra-District Transfer period open
By Jay Pentrack
Staff Reporter
A free mobile health care clinic van serve people and
families with no insurance will come to Idyllwild Wednesday Jan. 8, and it will return on the second Wednesday
of each month. The clinic will be hosted at Town Hall
at 25925 Cedar St. and will offer general medical exams,
sick child visits and a variety of health screenings.
“This is the first time we’ve ever had the clinic in
Idyllwild,” said Terri Bowen, senior community services
manager for the Riverside County Economic Development
Agency. “If weather is a problem, because the mobile
clinic is an RV, the staff will come up in other vehicles
and utilize the interior of Town Hall,” Bowen added.
According to Riverside County 3rd District Supervisor
Jeff Stone’s office, the half-million-dollar mobile clinic
was purchased in 2011 through a partnership between
the Riverside County Regional Medical Center Foundation and KB HOME, a homebuilding company based in
the United States. The Board of Supervisors designated
RCRMC as the county agency responsible for providing
all resources, oversight and management of the mobile
clinic. Currently, the mobile clinic travels thousands of
miles each month to serve 11 communities across the
7,300 square-mile the county.
In collaboration with Idyllwild community leaders,
Stone has worked to get the mobile clinic on a regular
rotation for the Idyllwild community. “It is difficult for
lots of families in Idyllwild to get off the mountain as
some residents do not have gas money or their cars might
not be in well enough shape to travel a great distance,
ultimately forcing them to make choices between basic
health care and survival. I am very appreciative that the
[Economic Development Agency], RCRMC and Riverside
County were able to make health access a reality for the
residents of Idyllwild,” Stone offered.
For more information, call Town Hall at 951-659-2638
or County Health at 951-486-5765.

Idyllwild Town Crier, December 26, 2013 - Page 9
Revisiting Idyllwild’s top stories of 2013
By J.P. Crumrine
News Editor
Editor’s note: This week, the Town Crier revisits just six
of the top stories of 2013.
Idyllwild evacuated for Mountain Fire
Monday afternoon, July 15, the Mountain Fire began
burning near Highway 243 in Mountain Center. The
fire began on the west side of Highway 243 but quickly
jumped the road and began blazing through the U.S.
Forest Service Keenwild Ranger Station area.
By Wednesday, July 17, local fire officials implemented
an evacuation of Idyllwild and Mountain Center. Apple
Canyon had been evacuated the first day. Pine Cove was
not included in the evacuation.
Four days later, Sunday, July 21, the evacuation had
lifted. Residents began returning to their homes. But the
fire had burned more than 27,300 acres. Property and
structural losses were limited to the Apple Canyon area.
In fact, severe rain showers, which helped officials lift
the evacuation, added to the damage and losses in Apple
Canyon.
Immediately after the fire started in Mountain Center,
flames and smoke could be seen just below the Forest
Service’s Keenwild helicopter site and along the road at
the front of the station.
Local fire officials quickly established a unified Incident
Command, led by Forest Service Fire Chief Dan Felix of
the San Jacinto Ranger District and Riverside County
Division Chief David Fulcher.
By that evening, a decision was made to request a Type
1 Incident Management Team. The unit began arriving and
assembling Tuesday evening and took control of battling
the blaze.
To combat the fire that was moving quickly and in
difficult-to-access areas, fire officials promised “to paint
the Mountain red.” Air tankers, nearly a dozen, dropped
thousands of gallons of fire retardant from Wellman and
Strawberry Cienaga areas through Saddle Junction and
down South Ridge for days.
Eventually, the IMT felt it was fighting two fires — one
on the southern edge and one on the northern flank closer
to Idyllwild. To the immediate east of Idyllwild, firefighters
created at least three lines of defense — bulldozer lines,
retardant lines and hand crews.
Fire team officials held a press conference in Idyllwild,
Thursday afternoon. Jeanne Pincha-Tulley, Incident Management Team commander, told the assembled media corps
and public that the Mountain Fire was the number one
fire priority in the nation.
While firefighters had gained traction on the southern
and western edges of the fire, a heavy inversion that morning had prevented a retardant saturation of the wilderness
area north and south of Saddle Junction. “There’s no clear
target,” Pincha-Tulley lamented.
Meanwhile, fire officials were worried that winds would
carry burning embers from the forest into the town,
starting structure fires. Idyllwild was not the team’s only
threatened community. The fire moved east and was only
2 miles from Palm Springs.
Two hotshot crews used the Palm Springs Tramway to
enter the backcountry and began work on the northern
tip of the Mountain Fire. These were the first units in
that area.
The mandatory Idyllwild evacuation was quickly deemed
a success, according to Riverside County Sheriff ’s Capt.
Scot Collins. One important reason was the existence of
fire plans, including evacuation plans, which the Mountain
Area Safety Taskforce had prepared over the past several
years. Their existence saved much time, according to
Pincha-Tulley.
Although the town of Idyllwild, about 3,800 people,
had been evacuated, a mobile city of about 3,500 people
was quickly constructed in Garner Valley. Mountain Fire
City was a company town of nearly 3,300 firefighting
professionals.
Finally, rain fell on the Mountain Fire Sunday morning.
That afternoon, the Riverside County Sheriff ’s Office, led
by Collins of the Hemet Station, held a press conference
at the Lake Hemet station to formally announce lifting
the evacuation order for Idyllwild and Fern Valley, and
an evacuation warning for Pine Cove.
“The rain is our version of aerial delivery of water,”
Pincha-Tulley said.
Idyllwild Fire Station employees welcomed residents back
with flags at both ends of town. Thank you signs began
to appear Sunday evening. Patrons of Higher Grounds
joined owner Mimi Lamp in creating a large montage of
grateful comments.
The fire ultimately burned 27,500 acres, most of those
in wilderness areas, and cost more than $20 million. The
vast network of hiking and biking trails in Garner Valley
and May Valley was closed during the fire. Many of these
trails and ones in the wilderness above Humber Park
remain closed due to the damage.
On Saturday, July 20, Idyllwild Congressman Dr. Raul
Ruiz (CA-D) visited the Mountain Fire IC post and also
some of the homes that burned early in the fire.
The congressman promised to amplify the voices of
the IC team and the local officials who had spent years
and endless hours to ensure the Hill’s protection. “Except
for your preparation, more homes and people could have
been injured and devastated,” he said. “I will inform all
levels of government, including the White House, of the
extraordinary teamwork and collaboration.”
A Burned Area Emergency Response team arrived in
late July and prepared a report in August. Repair of the
trails and ecosystems will take a year or longer, according
to District Ranger Arturo Delgado.
The fire was finally controlled in December, according
to Forest Service officials.
More than the Mountain Fire
threatens the Hill
While the Mountain Fire was the largest and most
direct danger to the Hill, several other fires threatened
the area, too.
The 2013 fire season, which many local fire officials now
describe as year-round, began with dangerous potential
and never retreated. The lack of significant rainfall for the
past several years had substantially reduced fuel moisture
levels.
All fire agencies — Idyllwild, Cal Fire and the Forest
Service — were busy this year protecting the community
and environs.
Fires began in January, when Idyllwild Fire was dispatched to a structure fire on Saunders Meadow Drive.
Several more occurred in the town during the winter and
early spring.
In late March, the first wildfire occurred in Pinyon.
Six acres were burned. Ten engines and more than 75
firefighters were dispatched to prevent its spread.
In early May, larger fires began. Both the Summit and
Gorgonio fires burned more than 500 acres. The Summit,
which burned nearly 3,200 acres, spread past Banning and
into the national forest. Within a day the Gorgonio Fire
began on the south side of Interstate 10 and Highway
243 had to be closed.
Immediately following the Mountain Fire, three other
fires, the largest of which was the Silver Fire, started on
the Hill. The Strong Fire, although the smallest at less
than acre, occurred in Idyllwild and could have spread
to residences without the immediate response of citizens
and Idyllwild Fire Station personnel.
Within a day, the Tram Fire began near the tram
parking lot. And then came the Silver Fire, which burned
more than 20,000 acres. The Poppet Flat and Twin Pines
communities were evacuated and Highway 243 again closed
for days. Many more structures burned in this area than
the Mountain Fire.
August ended with the threat of another fire — the
Little Fire — atop Thomas Mountain. Despite its name,
the fire burned nearly 100 acres, just west of the Mountain
Fire area in Garner Valley.
Chamber of Commerce closes its doors
David Jerome watched over the demise of the Idyllwild
Chamber of Commerce in 2013. The Chamber had been
a fixture in Idyllwild for decades, but internal feuds over
the past several years ultimately discouraged members
from assuming the role of director.
In late April and mid-May, Jerome held general
membership meetings to address the Chamber’s future.
With a resounding show of indifference, only seven of
57 members of the Idyllwild Chamber of Commerce
cared enough about the Chamber’s future to attend the
first meeting called to decide its future. In a little over
an hour, those seven voted to dissolve the long-standing
Idyllwild institution. Jerome, as the last board member,
had to assume the role of distributing the organization’s
meager, final assets.
The Chamber entered 2013 fending off a lawsuit,
which David Roy initiated. He was seeking payment for
additional work he did on the Tree Monument during the
summer. But the Chamber, as an instituion, had dropped
its directors’ insurance. Consequently, the suit, which was
filed against the Chamber and individual members, was
a personal cost to directors.
Rather than simply advancing the Chamber’s mission,
serving as director was becoming personally expensive,
discouraging the board from continuing and dissuading
other members from accepting the role.
Although Roy requested in January that the suit be
dismissed since it had been originally filed six months
before, it was too late to spare the directors the costs of
defending themselves.
In the complaint, Roy alleged the Chamber hired him
to apply a sealing coat to his carving, “Harmony,” prior
to its July 2012 dedication. He stated he was owed $1,500
for the work performed.
Prior to the vote to dissolve, long-time Chamber
supporter Marge Muir made the case for perpetuating
a Chamber as a new one without the baggage that has
dogged this board.
Former President Chris Titus, who attended the final
meeting, cautioned that as long as the Tree Monument
remained a Chamber asset, for this or any future Chamber,
the threat of a suit remained. “As long as the Chamber
owns the monument, the suit is there,” she said.
In a May letter, Jerome and the committee told the
community how the Chamber’s assets were to be disposed
and dispersed:
“We propose the following dispersal of the Chamber’s
assets to local 501(c)3 nonprofit corporations:
“• The Town Monument and the remaining funds in
the monument account to the Art Alliance of Idyllwild,
with the Idyllwild Rotary Club agreeing to take care of
maintaining it.
“• The shuttle van to the Art Alliance of Idyllwild.
“• Historical documents, memorabilia, folding tables,
file cabinets and vacuum cleaner to the Idyllwild Area
Historical Society.
“• Computer, printer and office supplies to the Soroptimists International of Idyllwild.
“• Four-panel convention back-drop to the Friends of
the Idyllwild Nature Center.

“• EZ-Up tent to the Idyllwild Community Center.
“• One case of emergency kits, Chamber defibrillator and
margarita machine to the Mountain Disaster Preparedness.
“• Remaining furniture and assorted items to the Idyllwild
HELP Center. Any remaining cash in the general account
after the Chamber’s final expenses have been paid would
also go to the Idyllwild HELP Center.”
Later, the group voted to give the Idyllwild Chamber of
Commerce phone number to the Idyllwild Town Crier and
Visitors Center.
Deer herd is new Idyllwild attraction
The Art Alliance of Idyllwild is on a mission to enhance
Idyllwild’s reputation for art. The first step was seeding the
town with 22 deer. From the monument, “Harmony,” to
Pine Cove, a deer herd, which many local artists colorfully
painted, has been spread throughout the Hill.
AAI is re-establishing Idyllwild as a new marketing niche
in a locale long favored by artists and musicians. The deer
herd is an extension of AAI’s effort to create a reputation
of the Hill’s support and embracement of public art.
“We want to extend the goal of Chris Trout when she
founded the Art Alliance in 1998, to make Idyllwild known
as an arts community and a destination for cultural tourists,” said Project Manager Shanna Robb in May during the
planning stages.
In August, the herd was introduced to the town at an
event outside Forest Lumber. This was the only time the
entire 22-member herd collected together. The herd comprises eight bucks and seven does all standing, five fawns
grazing and two recumbent fawns. During the next month,
the animals were distributed throughout the community.
Each local artist who volunteered to paint a deer was
assigned a specific theme to portray. For example, Donna

AAI President Gary Kuscher noted public art confers numerous benefits in towns and cities in which it is displayed.
“It promotes tourism, creates joy, increases foot traffic that

Burglaries still a Hill nuisance
Unfortunately, 2013 began with concern about burglaries
and finished with similar worries, despite an apparent dip
during spring and summer, although the focus seems to
have subtly shifted from commercial back to residential, the
primary target in 2011.
In January, a group of local business people met with
Riverside County Sheriff’s Department officials to discuss
the spate of commercial break-ins in late 2012. According to
Hemet Station Special Investigations Supervisor Sgt. Wallace
Clear, deputies patroling Idyllwild in the early morning hours
spotted two suspicious vehicles on Jan. 11.
Although deputies pursued the vehicles, no arrest was made.
The arrival of warmer weather coincided with a drop in
reported crime. Then the return of late fall and early winter
saw another spike in local break-ins — both commercial and
residential.
One part-time resident — Maryann Reimers — believes
someone broke into her house and spent several nights.
Idyllwild Mini Storage also was a recent victim, according
to owners Otto and Christina Kyriakivis.
While the Riverside County Board of Supervisors has
approved funding for additional deputies, Capt. Scot Collins
had explained that it takes a year or more to recruit, hire
and train applicants before they can patrol the streets and
highways.
Within the next year, the ratio of deputies to 100,000
residents in the county’s unicorporated areas will return to
1.0. As recently as last year, the county’s financial travails had Safe Council is trained and prepared to inspect local trees,

Wolfgang Bodison, actor and independent filmmaker, will be one of the featured filmmakers at the 2014
Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema from Jan. 7

Lance Corporal Harold Dawson in “A Few Good Men”,
starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson.
The film was directed by Academy Award-nominee Rob
Reiner. Bodison, who has appeared in numerous TV shows,
in feature films and on stage, was also nominated for a
NAACP Image Award as best actor for his performance
in Rodney Nugent’s “The Letter.” He also teaches acting
at the Playhouse West, founded by Robert Carnegie and
Academy Award-nominee Jeff Goldblum.
Two years ago, Bodison submitted two films to the IIFC,
“Two Bulls” for which he won Best Actor, and Simone.
Last year, “Broken” and “Sarah’s Wish” were screened; and
this year, Bodison has submitted “The Long Wait.”
Wolfgang will be showcased at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan.
11. Five of his short films will be screened, along with an
on-stage interview and Q&A with Steve Savage as host.
His 90-minute segment is called “Wolfgang Bodison: A

TC: How did your interest in filmmaking evolve?
WB: I started developing an interest in filmmaking
in college. I was a fine-arts major at the University of
Virginia. I also focused on writing courses because I had
always loved to write short stories, even as a kid. Inspired
by “Apocalypse Now,” I wrote a book in high school about
a character in the Vietnam War.
I also loved photography and for my college thesis project,
I made a music video to the U2 song, “Bullet the Blue
Sky,” by taking black-and-white pictures of kids playing
war and then wove the images into a story to the song.
From that, my teachers suggested that maybe I continue
to explore my interests in storytelling by exploring filmmaking.
TC: Where did you learn your craft — both acting and
filmmaking?
WB: I moved to L.A. to pursue my dreams to be a writer
and director. I started in the mailroom at Castle Rock Pictures. I then worked on several of the their TV shows as a
production assistant, and then was Rob Reiner’s set assistant
on the film, “Misery.” For an aspiring filmmaker, that was

a huge opportunity because I got to watch Rob Reiner and
Barry Sonnenfeld, who was the [director of photography]
on the project, work together to create the movie.
After that, I continued with production work and eventually
became the location manager on “A Few Good Men.” One
day, while working at the office, I bumped into Rob Reiner,
who was directing the movie, and he asked me if I might be
interested in auditioning for the role of Dawson. I told him
that I didn’t have any acting experience, but he said that I
had the right feel for the part and that I should just give it
a shot. I took him up on the offer and employed the help
of an acting coach and worked on the role. After several auditions, Mr. Reiner said that he had a big
decision to make. Of course, I didn’t think that decision
had anything to do with me, but low and behold, as I was
scouting locations for the movie, I got a call from his office
and he got on the phone and said, “Welcome to the movie
business. I’m offering the role of Dawson in aA Few Good
Men.’” And thus, my acting career began.
TC: Can you tell me a bit about your journey and what
inspired you to create a film about it?
WB: As I learned the craft and pursed my acting career,
my directing aspirations were put on the back burner. But I
did continue to write, mainly focusing on screenplays. Years
passed and I worked steadily as an actor, but my passion
to make movies remained strong. One thing that always
proved to be a problem was the cost-prohibitive nature of
the filmmaking process, which forced me to hope for and

wait for an opportunity to make a movie. But as filmmaking
evolved toward the digital platform, and the process became
more assessable, I realized that I no longer had to wait for
someone else to give me an opportunity; I could take matters into my own hands. Thus, I started on my journey by
writing and directing my own short films with the goal of
developing my talent toward directing a feature film.
TC: You have had an amazing acting career working
alongside some truly great actors. How was the transition
from being in front of the camera to behind it?
WB; Moving from in front of the camera to behind it
wasn’t a tough transition. Because of my acting background,
I feel very comfortable talking to the actors and working
with them to achieve their performance.
TC: When was your first visit to Idyllwild? What was
your impression of the local community?
WB: My first visit to Idyllwild was when I worked with
Stephen Savage on his film, “Legacy.” My short films have
screened at the festival over the past three years and I also
worked on Savage’s film, “Vertical.” I really enjoy the town
and my family and I return often to get away from Los
Angeles. I love the town’s vibe; the artistic spirit and laidback attitude. We love to rent a cabin with friends and go
hiking and just hang out and relax. Every year, my daughter
always asks when we’re going back to Idyllwild.
TC: As an Idyllwild film festival alum, what are you
looking forward to most this year?
WB: As an Idyllwild festival alum, I’m looking forward to
meeting new filmmakers and watching their work. There’s
always a very positive and supportive energy at the festival.
Every year, I leave the festival energized and excited to get
back to work.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus
Ava Rose presents her Christmas list to Santa during the Tree
Lighting Ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 1, in downtown Idyllwild.
This year marks the 116th
anniversary of probably the
most famous Christmas
newspaper editorial of all
time. It was written by Francis P. Church in response
to a letter from 8-year-old
Virginia O’Hanlon. It was
published on Sept. 21, 1897,
in the New York Sun.
We reprint it each year for
the enjoyment of our readers:
Is there a Santa Claus? We
take pleasure in answering at
once and thus prominently
the communication below,
expressing at the same time
our great gratification that its
faithful author is numbered
among the friends of the Sun:
Dear Editor:
I am 8 years old.
Some of my little friends
say there is no Santa Claus.
Papa says, “If you see it
in the Sun, it’s so.”
Please tell me the truth,
is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O’Hanlon
115 West 95th Street
Virginia, your litt le
friends are wrong. They
have been affected by the
skepticism of a skeptical age.
They do not believe except
what they see. They think
that nothing can be which
is not comprehensible by
their little minds. All minds,
Virginia, whether they be
men’s or children’s, are little.
In this great universe of ours
man is a mere insect, an ant,
in his intellect, as compared
with the boundless world
about him, as measured
by the intelligence capable
of grasping the whole truth
and knowledge.
Yes, Virginia, there is a
Santa Claus. He exists as
certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist,
and you know that they
abound and give to your life
its highest beauty and joy.
Alas! How dreary would be
the world if there were no
Santa Claus! It would be as
dreary as if there were no
Virginias. There would be
no childlike faith, then, no
poetry, no romance to make
tolerable their existence. We
should have no enjoyment,
except in sense and sight.
The eternal light with which
childhood fills the world
would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa
Claus! You might as well
not believe in fairies! You
might get your Papa to
hire men to watch in all
the chimneys on Christmas
Eve to catch Santa Claus,
but even if they did not see
Santa Claus coming down,
what would that prove?
Nobody sees Santa Claus,
but that is no sign that there
is no Santa Claus. The most
real things in the world are
those that neither children
nor men can see. Did you
ever see fairies dancing on
the lawn? Of course not,
but that’s no proof that they
are not there. Nobody can
conceive or imagine all the
wonders there are unseen
and unseeable in the world.
You tear apart the baby’s
rattle and see what makes
the noise inside, but there
is a veil covering the unseen world which not the
strongest man, not even
the united strength of all
the strongest men that ever
lived, could tear apart. Only
faith, fancy, poetry, love,
romance, can push aside
the curtain and view and
picture the supernatural
beauty and glory beyond.
Is it all real? Ah, Virginia,
in all this world there is
nothing else more real and
abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank
God he lives, and he lives
forever. A thousand years
from now, Virginia, nay
10 times 10,000 years from
now, he will continue to
make glad the heart of
childhood.

HELP Center and Thrift Store Newsletter
Happy and Healthy Holidays to All,
We at the Idyllwild HELP Center love this
season best of all. We have the joy of distributing lots of toys and clothing to a multitude of
children who would not otherwise be receiving
these gifts during the holidays. In addition we
have been distributing food vouchers and food
supplies to our client families. The gifts have
been collected and donated by individuals (from
our Holiday Angel Trees) as well as a number of
local organizations. Among them, The Idyllwild
Quilters, Salvation Army, the Idyllwild Health
Center, Idyllwild Fire Dept., Cal. Fire, Idyllwild
Pines, Red Kettle, the Bible Church, Community
Church, Pine Cove Property Owners Association
and the Idyllwild Board of Realtors. Of course, the
Woodies keep cutting tons of wood for our clients
weekly. Thanks also for the wonderful response
to our Holiday “Unevent” fundraiser as well as
to the generous event sponsors. The list goes on
and I hope I left no one out. Thank you all.
We are so proud of Idyllwild and its residents
as well as our many “off the hill” friends who
contribute regularly to help us continue this necessary work at holidays and throughout the year.
We are also personally proud of the trust and faith
the town has in our Staff and Board of Directors
to serve and administer to our clients and their
needs.
This past week we’ve received an abundance
of quality donations at the Thrift Store. They’re
selling well and we’re getting items on display
as quickly as possible. This is great as we’re approaching heavy winter and our slow season, so
the more we can sell now and bank the funds,
the greater the assurance that the HC itself will
keep up with its running expenses during the
next three to four months. Just like any business
we depend on cash flow as well as grant funds
to make ends meet. Thanks to all of you we’ve
been making it work for more than twenty years.
If you are interested, we welcome anyone
who would like to volunteer at the HELP Center.
Please call us at 951-659-1220 and leave a message.
Colleen is often with clients and cannot pick up
the phone. We promise to return your call.
So, enjoy yourselves, eat hearty, laugh with
each other, stay well and have a Happy Holiday
week. 2014 is going to be a great year! Thank
you all again.

Special election for state senator
Last week, Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued a proclamation declaring a special election for the 23rd California
Senate District on June 3, 2014. The primary for this
special election is March 25, 2014.
The seat’s vacancy occurred with the Dec. 1 resignation
of Sen. Bill Emmerson.
Krieger takes over at Fern Valley Water
By J.P. Crumrine
News Editor
The Fern Valley Water District Board of Directors
chose new officers for 2014. The next president is Robert
Krieger, vice president this year.
The 2014 vice president is James Rees, who was secretary in 2013. Director Trisha Clark is the next secretary.
Both Krieger and Rees were re-elected to the board
without opposition this year.
The board also voted to terminate its rebates for
high-efficiency toilets. The district has already rebated
$2,100 ($100 more than was budgeted) to customers this
year.
“It’s the first year we’ve ever been close to the budget,”
said Office Manager Jessica Priefer. “But we’re at the limit
and only halfway through the fiscal year.”
Rees made the motion to terminate the program. Krieger
questioned its value to the district. “For vacation homes,
does it really save us any water?” he asked. The vote was
unanimous, 4-0. Director Charles Wix was absent.
In other financial business, the board accepted the
audit for fiscal year 2012-13, which ended June 30, 2013.
The board also accepted the demise of the San Jacinto
Mountain Area Water Agency. The board had correspondence from the other two local water districts — Idyllwild
and Pine Cove — indicating a lack of interest in continuing
the agency.
“I’m a little surprised we did not take action on the
agency. The three [water districts] could change the rules,”
Krieger opined. “Now it’s going to die … with a joint
powers we could have done anything we wanted if the
three agencies had agreed.”
General Manager Steve
Erler reported the repair of
a 10 gallon-per-minute leak
on Rim Rock Road. Since
Erler had the staff investigate for leaks last month,
he thought this was a new
leak, which explains why it
was discovered by a hiker.
The groundwater level
of the district’s wells “for
December show little change
in most wells over the last
month,” Erler told the board. Robert Krieger, president of
“… well levels are zero to 5 the Fern Valley Water District
feet lower compared to the Board of Directors for 2014.

same time as last year.”
As surface water flows
diminish, FVWD relies more on its well supplies. In
November, the wells supplied 75 percent of production,
compared to 56 percent in October and just 11 percent
in November 2012.
For the October billing, FVWD’s 2013 production was
33.2 million gallons, which is slightly more than 100,000
gallons greater than the same period in 2012; however, it
is nearly 850,000 gallons less than the average since 2008.
Erler also announced that FVWD’s website is now
operational. It can be found at www.fernvalleywater.com.
Designed by Jim Crandall, the site provides the following
information: rate structure, conservation, newsletters, financials, employee compensation, meetings, agendas and
more.

Idyllwild Water supply unfavorable
By J.P. Crumrine
News Editor
Chief Finance Officer Hosny Shouman announced that
the Idyllwild Water District is now debt-free. The final
payment ($125,000) for notes issued in 1997 was made
earlier this month.
Total payments were $1.5 million and helped to refinance the district’s sewage treatment facility.
The district’s finances are positive through the first five
months of the current fiscal year, which ends June 30,
2014. However, Shouman expressed some concern that
the sewer revenue was not fully covering the program’s
expenses. But the board will consider this issue during
the formulation of future budgets.
General Manager Terry Lyons also announced that
the 200,000-gallon Golden Rod tank was completed and
is already connected to IWD’s distribution system this
month. The full cost of rebuilding and expanding the
storage facility was about $250,000. It adds nearly 100,000
gallons of storage to the district’s reservoirs.
The second tank under construction — Tollgate —
has been erected and painting will be done once warm
weather returns in the spring.
In water business, Lyons reported that the groundwater level of the district’s wells at Foster Lake dropped
4.5 feet in November to 30 feet below the surface. The
groundwater level of the Nature Center wells dropped
nearly 20 feet. However, the wells near Strawberry Creek,
such as the downtown wells and Fern Valley 1A and 2,
had groundwater levels rise.
“All three are very close to the creek and reflect what
the creek is doing right now,” Lyons said. Nevertheless,
IWD did not divert any Strawberry Creek water in November.
The district’s new triggers for establishing a Stage 3
water emergency are groundwater levels below 50 feet for
the Foster Lake wells and 30 feet for downtown wells.
“Have we accomplished the 10 percent usage reduction
we were looking for in Stage 2?” asked Director John
Cook. The district entered a Stage 2 water emergency on
Sept. 1. While usage dropped in November, the 10-percent
decline had not occurred, “but we’re looking for it in a
couple of months,” Lyons replied.
IWD’s November production was 6.8 million gallons,
about 250,000 gallons more than November 2012. The
average November production since 2008 has been 6.8
million gallons, while the 10-year average is 6.4 million
gallons.
In Board of Directors business, Cook was elected vice
president for 2014. He succeeds Director Warren Monroe
and joins Director Jim Billman, who was chosen president
last month, as the board officers for next year.
The district’s income survey is moving forward. Nearly
500 responses have been received; however, about 100 were
returned without any information other than concerns
that it might be a scam or invasion of privacy. Lyons said
he will know next month whether they have received a
sufficient number of responses to finish the analysis.
J.P. Crumrine can be reached at [email protected].

Richard Mozeleski new recreation coordinator
By J.P. Crumrine
News Editor
Richard Mozeleski is the new Town Hall sports coordinator. He began last week after passing the final
background checks.
Mozeleski and his wife moved to Fern Valley several
years ago from Murietta where he had a landscaping
business. Before becoming full-time neighbors, they were
commuting from Murrieta part-time for five years before.
The traditional menu of kids sports — softball, basketball and volleyball — will continue, but he wants to
add a year-round running club for the kids and teens who
want to exercise without competing in team sports. One
of his friends is a retired cross-country running coach and
he also hopes to recruit some of the local long-distance
runners to help, also.
Also, Mozeleski, a former coach, plans to emphasize
skill clinics for the young athletes. He has organized and
presented several basketball skill days as a former coach
and will continue this practice at Town Hall programs.
Besides programs focused on Idyllwild School students,
Mozeleski wants to expand Town Hall’s offering to local
high school students, too. His goal will be to create an
inclusive program for kids and teens of all grades. He
also would like to have smaller squads so kids can play
more.
“High-school basketball became my salvation,” he said.
“It kept me out of trouble and in school.” Consequently,
he plans to start the expanded program with basketball.
Nothing is offered now after sixth grade, unless they play
off the Hill.
His philosophy will be to incorporate adults as mentors
into the activities for high school students. They can play
together, but the adults can teach more than game skills.
“They need to think mentor first and coaching second,”
Mozeleski stressed. “I’ve seen a lot in the last two decades,
starting with the travel squads [which he coached].”
He does not plan to limit the application of this
philosophy to basketball. “I’ll try it also through other
sports,” he added.
Middle-school basketball
sign-ups are now open. And
adult volleyball season has
already started. After basketball season, he would like
to schedule a kids’ volleyball
season to be followed by
spring baseball and softball.
“Kids finding one thing
to keep them involved for
the next four to five years
after middle school, whether it’s theater, dance, math
or sports — I just want to Richard Mozeleski, Town

believe in it,” he emphasized.

2014 tax season to open Jan. 31
The Internal Revenue Service plans to open the 2014
filing season on Jan. 31 and encourages taxpayers to use
e-file or Free File as the fastest way to receive refunds.
The new opening date for individuals to file their 2013
tax returns will allow the IRS adequate time to program
and test its tax processing systems. The annual process for
updating IRS systems saw significant delays in October
following the 16-day federal government closure.
“Our teams have been working hard throughout the
fall to prepare for the upcoming tax season,” IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel said. “The late January
opening gives us enough time to get things right with our
programming, testing and systems validation. It’s a complex
process, and our bottom-line goal is to provide a smooth
filing and refund process for the nation’s taxpayers.”
The IRS cautioned that it will not process any tax
returns before Jan. 31, so there is no advantage to filing
on paper before the opening date. Taxpayers will receive
their tax refunds much faster by using e-file or Free File
with the direct deposit option.
Intra-District Transfer period open
The Hemet Unified School District’s Intra-District
Transfers Open Enrollment period for the 2014-15 school
year is Jan. 1 to March 1, 2014. During that period, parents
may apply to transfer their children to a different school.
HUSD policy allows children to continue their current
enrollment at their school through the highest grade level
offered without having to re-apply annually for their
transfer.
Parents may pick up an information letter and application at any district school or at the Centralized Registration
Office, 2085 W. Acacia Avenue, Hemet. Applications must
be submitted on or before March 1.

(951) 659-2145 or E-mail: [email protected]
Every day throughout the United States,
newspapers publish thousands of public
notices about events, conditions or actions
that affect countless individuals, families,
neighborhoods and businesses. Public notices cover many topics, including business
matters, liquor licensing, public auctions and
sales, estates, zoning, public meetings, bids
to sell goods and services to the government,
local government finances and state and
local elections. Public notice is a fundamental
component of our system of representative
democracy, which depends upon the participation of educated, responsible citizens.

Horoscope
ARIES (March 21 to April
19) It’s a good time to take a
much-needed break from your
recent hectic schedule and spend
some time in quieter surroundings. Important news could arrive
early next week.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20)
The Taurean traits of reliability
and thoroughness could be
well-tested when decision-makers
consider your proposals and/or
requests. Be prepared to answer
some probing questions.
GEMINI (May 21 to June
20) A sudden attack of boredom leaves you with some tasks
undone. It’s OK to take a short
respite. But get back to work by
week’s end so that you have time
for other projects.
CANCER (June 21 to July
22) Avoid prejudging a situation
just because it looks bad. Facts
could emerge that would make
your position uncomfortable,
to say the least. A relative has
interesting news to share with
you.
LEO (July 23 to August 22)
This is a good time to begin
reassessing some of your recent
decisions about your long-range
goals to see if they still have
merit. Spend more time with
loved ones this weekend
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unsettled situation
at home or on the job early in
the week could drain your energy
levels, making it difficult to get
your work done on schedule. But
things improve by midweek.
LIBRA (September 23 to
October 22) A temporary setback
could give you time to go over
your plans to find weaknesses you
might have overlooked before.
A romantic getaway with that
special person is favored this
weekend.
SCORPIO (October 23 to
November 21) Professional and
personal situations benefit once
you set a positive tone in getting
things off to a good start. Honest dialogue smoothes over any
occasional display of balkiness.
SAGITTARIUS (November
22 to December 21) A problem
with workplace colleagues or
family members seems to defy
even your sage counsel. But be
patient. Your words eventually
will lead to a resolution.
CAPRICORN (December 22
to January 19) Don’t just wait out
that unexpected and unexplained
delay in your career move. You
could gain added respect if you
ask why it happened and what
you can do to move things along
AQUARIUS (January 20 to
February 18) Although your
workplace strategies usually are
accepted, you could be challenged
by someone who isn’t so favorably
impressed. Be prepared to defend
your positions.
PISCES (Februar y 19 to
March 20) Your friendship circle
expands, with new people coming into your life at this time.
Welcome them warmly. But don’t
neglect those cherished longtime
personal relationships.
BORN THIS WEEK: You love
to search for knowledge and share
it with others. You would make
an especially fine teacher.

gional and national independent school organizations.
“I am passionate about arts education and very excited
about the opportunity to work with the talented faculty
and staff of Idyllwild Arts,” Jordan wrote in the IAF press
release. “I am a firm believer in the mission of Idyllwild
Arts and I look forward to working with the board, faculty
and staff of Idyllwild Arts as we build upon the strong
reputation of this remarkable institution.”
In describing an arts education during an interview
with the Chicago Sun-Times, Jordan said, “An arts education can be the foundation that helps young people
become critical and imaginative thinkers and doers. The
arts teach students to consider that there is more than one
right answer and that there are multiple solutions to a
problem. This type of divergent thinking naturally fosters
collaboration, effective communication and innovation —
all critical capacities that are essential for success.”
“Pamela is a great selection and galvanized to take us
forward. She knows Bill Lowman [the former IA head
of school] quite well,” said Steve Fraider, director of the
summer program, “and serves in a couple of organizations
with Doug Ashcraft [dean of the academy]. She knows
us very well.”
About 100 applicants applied for the positions, according
to Fraider. “We were gratified with that response. Now
we’re excited about our prospects,” he added.
Jordan will have the responsibility of overseeing the
academy, one of only three independent boarding high
schools for the arts in the United States, and its 64-yearold summer program, which annually reaches nearly 2,000
participants of all ages seeking intensive arts experiences.

Earlier this month, a Sacramento County Superior
Court judge sided with Cal Fire regarding property owners’
rights to a refund if the State Responsibility Area Fire Prevention Fee is deemed unconstitutional. Property owners
who have not filed a timely Petition for Redetermination
will not be eligible for refunds of the fee payment if the
court subsequently agrees with the litigation challenging
the legitimacy of the fee.
Assembly Bill 29, which enacted the fire prevention
fee, also specified an administrative process for seeking a
refund. The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has filed
a lawsuit claiming the fee is a tax and was not enacted
with a two-thirds vote as specified in the state constitution.
However, Superior Court Judge Eugene Balonon concluded the fee’s legality does not affect the refund process.
“Plaintiffs seeking relief under the Third Cause of
Action argue that they are excused from filing a Petition
for Redetermination because AB 29 did not become law,
and thus, neither did the administrative remedy. However,
plaintiffs are not excused from filing a Petition for Redetermination because they believe the law to be invalid,”
he opined.
The court also rejected HJTA’s request to have Cal Fire
set aside the collected fees until the court adjudicates the
basic claim of whether the fee is a tax and, therefore,
constitutional.
“Moreover, the [claim to preserve the monies] is a
remedy, not a cause of action [and] … relates to the
appropriate remedy if the court declares that the fee is
unconstitutional,” Balonon wrote.
A court date for the trial has not been set.

Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding

there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee

the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a
Trustee auction does not automatically entitle
you to free and clear ownership of the property.
You should also be aware that the lien being
auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the
highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be
responsible for paying off all liens senior to the
lien being auctioned off, before you can receive
clear title to the property. You are encouraged
to investigate the existence, priority, and size of
outstanding liens that may exist on this property
by contacting the county recorder’s office or a
title insurance company, either of which may
charge you a fee for this information. If you
consult either of these resources, you should be
aware that the same Lender may hold more than
one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property.
Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown

The crew at the Rustic Theatre made what they believe is
the longest popcorn string in the world. It measured 505 feet,
which extended from the front of the theater to Village Market.
They began putting the string together on Nov. 19 at 5:40 pm.
The string was left in the lobby for visitors to help build. It is
estimated that 150 hours were spent putting it together and
it will be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records.
