This event was rescheduled from April 15-17 due to poor weather conditions to
September 9-11 at Camp Don Harrington. If you already registered your Scout, you do
not have to reschedule as we already have your information and payment. If you could
not attend in April but would like to now, we will reopen the online registration on or
about August 15th at www.goldenspread.org.

Cub Scout Leaders should be trained in their currently registered leadership position.
Each position has its own training requirements. Each time you register in a different
role, you need to have the training for that position.
To complete your training online, simply visit www.myscouting.org, create an account,
and choose the training you would like to complete. There are also other interesting
trainings available to you such as Safe Swim Defense and Weather Hazards.
When you visit the website, please enter your Member ID number. If you do not have
that, please call Stephen at the Scout Service Center and he will provide it to you.

SCOUT SERVICE CENTER REMODEL
If you hadn’t heard, we are about to remodel the Scout Service Center! This will begin in
September and we will remain open for business!
The plans include adding a storage building and offices behind the current building,
totally remodel the Scout Shop and entryway, new flooring, lighting, heating and air
conditioning, wallcovering, and create several new offices.
The Conference Room will have the newest technology including wireless internet,
projector, speakers, screens and an awesome area right outside that will include a
fireplace and sitting area to hold small meetings or receptions!
We have set up a blog to keep you informed on timelines, construction, and pictures. We
did this when we built the Dining Hall at Camp Don Harrington and it was extremely

Annual Sporting Clays Classic
It is hard to believe but it is now time to begin to finalize our plans for the Golden Spread
Council’s Sporting Clays Classic Tournament and Auction. This year’s tournament will be
our 14th Annual Sporting Clays Classic! This year’s Classic will be held on Friday, August
12 and Saturday, August 13, and will again be held at beautiful Camp Don Harrington.
As you probably know, all proceeds from the tournament go towards supporting our local
Boy Scout programs.
We are very proud to say that our tournament has grown from 24 teams in 2003, to this year’s projected 75 teams and
300 shooters. These teams will come from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado, all in support of our Scouts.
With this many teams and shooters, the Council is in need of 200-250 volunteers to help us run a fun and safe
tournament. We request (a strong plea) to you and members of your troop, company or family to consider volunteering
some time to help us during this year’s Sporting Clays Tournament.
Volunteers are needed in lots of different areas and for various times during the duration of the event. Volunteers will be
needed on both Friday, August 12 and on Saturday, August 13. As a volunteer, you can help on one day or for both days.
Every volunteer will be fed lunch on Friday, have an opportunity to shoot 50 clays on Friday after the tournament
participants leave at 4pm, and will be fed breakfast and lunch on Saturday. In addition to that, the first 225 volunteers to
sign up will receive a commemorative t-shirt as recognition for their time and service.

Spook-O-Ree coming soon!
The annual Spook-O-Ree is an event for all Cub Scouts, newly recruited and experienced
ones! Scouts have a goulish time in the midway games area, shooting BB Guns, and Bows
and Arrows. In addition to the Touch-a-Truck area where Scouts can climb on the big rig,
tractors, and other equipment, they also participate in Pumpkin Painting, Obstacle Course,
Hay Rides, and the ever popular “Pumpkin Chunckin”.
This year we will offer two Saturdays to participate in. October 15th and October 22nd at
Camp Don Harrington AND October 15th at Camp MK Brown. Events starts at 1pm and end
around 5pm with an optional dinner meal. When it gets dark, scouts can visit the exciting
(scary) Spookhouse and Spook Walk!!!

CUB SCOUT CAMPS
Our Cub Scout Resident Camps were a success this year with the theme of “Outback Adventure”! Scouts who participated in one
of the three weekends got to to see and pet a Kangaroo, Birds, and Amphibians! No where else in the Panhandles of Texas and
Oklahoma could you do that!!!!!
Our Weeklong Day Camps all held at Camp Don Harrington, are going well. The last camp is scheduled for August 1-4 and it’s our
“Wet and Wild” Camp. Lots of pool time and other water activities will be enjoyed.
Thanks to everyone who have supported these camps and especially the dedicated adult and youth staff members who have made
this possible.

EXPLORING NEWS
This newsletter we are focusing on the Tigersharks Civil Air Patrol Explorer Post 5353. Every Memorial Day from Sunday at 11:00
am until Monday at 11:00 am members stand watch until which time a memorial ceremony commenced to honor the fallen
veterans of the Texas Panhandle and our nation. The youth took their turn walking the premises to keep watch on the memorial for
24 hours and then their advisor, Marion Salisbury took her turn on the microphone to open the ceremony with the “Star Spangled
Banner”.
There are more exciting things to come in the world of Exploring!! This career based program is open to all youth 14-20 so if you
want to know more about how to join a post or just about Exploring in general, check out Exploring.org or call Gemma Mitchell at

FIREM’N CHIP REQUIREMENTS CHANGE
The requirements for the Firem’n Chit card were updated May 24, 2016 to include the practices of Leave No Trace and Tread
Lightly!.
The revised requirements are:
1. Read and understand fire use and safety rules from The Boy Scout Handbook.
2. Build campfires only when necessary and when you have permission.
3. Minimize campfire impacts using existing campfire lays when available consistent with the principles of Leave No Trace. All
flammable material must be cleared at least 5 feet in all directions from fire.
4. Safely use and store fire starting materials.
5. See that fires are tended to at all times.
6. Make sure that water and/or fire tools are readily available and promptly report any wildfire to the proper authorities.
7. Use the cold-out test to make sure the fire is cold out and make sure the fire lay is cleaned before leaving it.
8. Follow the Outdoor Code and the principles of Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly!.
Cards with the new requirements should be ready late summer of this year.

Cub Scout Roundup Time!!!
It’s that time of year! A new school year means one thing – hundreds upon hundreds of new Cub Scouts! The adventure of Scouting lies just around
the corner for all these excited young boys (and their parents!) and the way we welcome them will largely determine whether they stay in Scouting.
Roundup will be their first exposure to Scouting so we need to make it great. The best Cub Scout Packs do several things:
1. Host a booth or table at your school’s Open House Registration Day (the day the school is open BEFORE school starts so parents and students
can meet their teachers, see the classroom, etc.). Have a couple leaders and Scouts in uniform to talk to interested parents and boys as they
pass by. It’s a good idea to have photos from your activities, a couple Pinewood Derby cars, and other Scouting implements to attract attention
and show that you are an active pack. Also, have a signup sheet where parents can put their name, phone number, and email address. Use this
to remind them of the roundup. You might also hand out a ‘save the date’ flyer that tells the parent when your roundup will be (you can get the
date from your District Executive).
2. Plan your Ideal Year of Scouting and have a calendar available for new families.
3. Hand out a pack information sheet at the roundup. Key names (with contact information), key dates, where the pack meetings take place. What
would you want to know when you sign up for something? Remember that these new parents don’t know our BSA lingo (YPT, BSA, JLT, Wolf,
Bear, Den, Patrol, etc.). Use language that everyone will understand.
4. Embrace your new families. Help them to feel welcome and appreciated. Most of the parents were probably not Scouts and may be slightly
apprehensive about what to expect.
5. Hold your Back to Pack before school starts. Not sure what a Back to Pack is? There’s a great flyer in your Program Preview packet and the
same flyer is on the council website.
6. Know the status of your returning leaders and dens. What dens can take new boys and which cannot?
7. We know that when we lose new Cub Scouts it’s almost always because the dens didn’t meet soon after the roundup and/or the den leader
didn’t get trained. Pack committees can provide leadership and support so this doesn’t happen to your pack!

Step 4: Income Planner
Calculate your Ideal Year Of Scouting goal per Scout. Divide the “per youth” cost for 1 year by your Popcorn Commission (35%). For example if the unit needs
$125 per boy for participate in all activities, divide 125 by .35, arriving at $417. This is the amount of popcorn a boy would need to sell to pay for his “Ideal Year
of Scouting.” (In 2015, the average Scout in our council sold more than $467 in popcorn.)

Use a newsletter, E-mail, etc. to keep your families updated. Send the program and a calendar of events to every registered family.

pocket costs.

2016-2017 PROGRAM KICK-OFF AND FALL RECRUITING
COMMISSIONERS - we are being called to service! This fall in the Golden Spread Council we are hosting
unified Back-to-School Cub Scout recruitment nights in each District. We are needed to help be available to
host the Back-to-School events. BUT in order to help we need to attend the Program Kick-Offs to receive
our instruction we must register for ONE of the THREE Program Kick-Off's (see below) so that your specific
materials will be available for you. In addition, attendance will help everyone be ready for a fun-filled year
with lots of unit, district and council activities. The 2016-2017 Council Calendar of events and activities will
be available and all of the materials to be prepared for camps and the popcorn sale.

ROUNDTABLE TRAINING - WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The Purpose: To provide skills, techniques, information, program ideas and the know-how that makes for successful unit operation. Unit leadership
will be given the morale, enthusiasm, inspiration and vision that helps us all enjoy this amazing organization called Boy Scouting. These trainings
are fun, full of camaraderie and well worth your time!
Who should attend this monthly District-wide event? All Cub Scout leaders, all Boy Scout leaders, all Varsity leaders and all Venturing
leaders!
How do you find out more information? Contact your District Commissioner or District Executive (or visit your District page on the Council
website) to to find out the times and locations of each District's Roundtable.
In some cases, Roundtables are being re-organized and we could use enthusiastic individuals who would like to be a part of this training!

YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING
All registered leaders are required to complete Youth Protection Training every two years.
You can do this online at www.myscouting.org. If you are not sure if you are due for
training, you can ask the registrar at the Scout Service Center. Once you register for the
first time in the Boy Scouts, you have 30 days to complete this training. Please don’t wait–
just go online and complete the hour-long training. After you have completed the course,
you will be aware of what is required by law to report, how to protect yourself and those
Scouts you are involved with. This is an award winning training so check it out today!

2016 Golden Spread Council Trail's End Popcorn Sale!
1. A new Top 50 Council Sellers Club- in addition to our annual $650 sellers club the Council is proud to
announce a new and additional level for our Council to recognize the Council’s top 50 popcorn Scout
Salesmen. These top 50 salesmen will be invited to a private party that will feature fun, food, and an
opportunity for all 50 top sellers to spin a wheel and win neat prizes.
2. Keller Prize Company – This is the same company we used last year. They offer great prizes and a
speedy prize delivery!!!
3. Exciting product news- on the Show n’ Sale products list this year: Classic Trail Mix and 3 different, beautiful Gift Tins filled
with White Chocolatey Pretzels, a Chocolate Lovers Collection, and a Cheese Lover’s Collection.
4. Three Easy Ways to Sell Popcorn in 2016-The Golden Spread Council- Show n’Sell, Take Order and a new and improved
On-Line Popcorn Sales platform.
5. Simpler Commission Structure-Selling units will earn full commission simply by paying the Council on-time!
6. Things to know and do right away: Go to the Council Website and click on the Popcorn Tab located at the bottom of the front
page. Click on the Sales Commitment form and print this form out. This form is how you sign your Scout Unit to sell Popcorn in
2016. Either mail, fax, or email this form to the scout office. Next decide if your unit plans on selling popcorn during the “Show N”
Sell time period. If your unit want’s to participate in the Show N” Sell program, please remember that you must order your Show
N’Sell Popcorn by Tuesday, September 6. For your convenience under the council website popcorn tab you will find a Show N’Sell
suggested product mix calculator. Simply put in the amount of commission your unit wants to make from the Show N’ Sell portion
of the 2016 Popcorn sale and the calculator will figure for your unit the suggested product mix and amount of each product to
order. Also under the Website Popcorn Tab you will find the actual Show N’ Sell product order form. This form must be turned in
the scout office by September 6th! Show N Sale- Product Distribution will be at the scout office on September 21, 22, 23.

Seeking Part-Time Paid Staff
The various Scouting programs have traditionally been
led by volunteer parents and adults who plan, organize and
deliver the program to a group of youth at nearby sponsoring
schools, churches or civic clubs. Through an initiative set forth
by the Golden Spread Council, the Quanah Parker DistrictScoutReach Division employ’s part time paid staff to deliver the
newly released Cub Scouting program in an after school style
format at select locations across Amarillo.
Over the past several years, our council has conducted
several camps for San Jacinto and Whittier Elementary School
children. They enjoyed such activities as Archery, Slingshots,
and fun Team Building Games. These children got to experience
just a few hours of what a Scout enjoys during all day or
weeklong camps. What a great opportunity for these young
people. Some of the pictures taken during these camps are
below!!!
These paid positions include the traditional roles of
Cubmaster, Den Leader, Committee/activity planner, etc. We
are currently looking to expand and are in need of immediate
assistance!
We have paid Scouting positions available to
individuals 18 years of age and older. Pay ranges from $12.00 $15.00 Per Hour and weekly hours are flexible. For more

Well once again the AW Day Camp was a success at MKB. Not a lot of youth
were there but the ones that did had a great time. Thank you George Hall for
the Range help, Luis Snider for Aquatics, Laura Paul and Mandy Jaramillo for
being there and taking charge. And of course our faithful Ranger Alan (Bear).

I hope all of you have had great summer, and are now gearing up for
this next school year. It’s been an eventful time for the district with two
Day Camps as well as all the other residence camps, etc. that everyone
went to. There was a lot of fun to be had at these camps were we got to
do many different activities that were a blast. A special thank you to our
camp directors and volunteers who helped these camp to be a great
success.

As mentioned the school year is upon us and with that comes
recruitment. This is one of the best part of the year as it allows us to
bring more youth into the program and teach them all the great things
scouting stands for. I know we all can agree that every youth will benefit
from scouting if given the chance. We are working diligently to set up
the roundups in your town, Lone Wolf District Roundup Night is Sept 8th.
Fall Recruiting
Big change this year on how we will do it. On September 15th is the one and
only Scout Sign up night for all Adobe Walls Schools. Boy Talks will be done
on September 13 & 14 District Wide. Other DE’s and management will be
coming to AW those days to help with the talks. Then on September 15th all
schools will have their sign up night in every town. At the Program Preview
there will be a training on what to do at your schools sign up night. Along with
a box of supplies. Please make plans to attend on August 18 at FUMC in
Mclean.
Popcorn
Popcorn is in the works. Show and Sale distribution is on September 21 at
the Council. Popcorn kickoff is on September 20th at FUMC in Mclean at 6:30.

Golden Eagle District Committee & Roundtable
Roundtable is a fun, informational meeting/training for all
leaders and interested adult volunteers of the Golden Eagle
District. Roundtable is a form of supplemental training held
monthly on a district basis. Roundtable provides Cub Scout
and Boy Scout leaders an opportunity to share ideas and
activities with leaders from other units. It is a source of
continuing information. Come be a S.T.A.R. (Scouter That
Attends Roundtable)
The Key 3 would like to remind everyone that the District
Committee and Roundtable is open to anyone that would like
to attend. Scouting is about Volunteers and the great things
they do. We are always looking for new Unit Commissioners
and other Specific Committee Members. Come and help or
just come and have fun!
2016-2017 Training & Program Preview
Please join us on August 4th at 7PM at St. Thomas the Apostle on
Coulter for our volunteer training and program preview. This training
will get all leadership (new and returning) ready for the upcoming
scouting year. There will be vital information and training for even
the most experienced scouters. We will also be doing the Program
Preview and handing our materials for the upcoming year. So please
mark your calendars and RSVP on our website. If you are unable to
attend, there will be two additional trainings to attend, please check
the website.
AISD School Roundup Night
Thursday September 1st will be the AISD wide scout sign up night.
We are trying to simplify things this year by having all AISD schools
participate in a roundup all on the same night. All information on
this will be covered at the Aug 4th training. We are hoping to get the
boys and parents excited for a new year of scouts, and want to
make it as easy as possible for them to have the opportunity to sign
up. We will need volunteers from every pack and also some troops
to help with this effort. Please contact Lynsey Davis
([email protected]) if you are interested in helping out.
Roundtable
Roundtable is normally held the first Thursday of each month;
however, the first roundtable of this year will be held September 8th
since we have the roundup night the first Thursday. Roundtable is
open to all volunteers, and is highly encouraged so that everyone
can stay informed, trained, and we can keep communication lines
open and effective.
GE EAGLE Boards of Review
PLEASE, we need your help! – We have a core group of volunteers
who help us every month. But they cannot do it alone. We cannot
complete these project reviews and Eagle ranks without your help.
Please encourage your Troop Advancement Chairman, Troop
Committee Chairman, Troop Outdoor Chairman, etc. to join us. All
the training is provided, and as a bonus to your unit, these board
volunteers will bring back valuable information to your unit
concerning the Eagle Project and Eagle Rank Board process.

Summer camps have been in full swing at both Camp Don
Harrington and Camp MK Brown. Both camps had a variety of
resident camps as well as week long day camps. We hope that

Members of the Golden Spread Council,
I am excited to be able to send this to you from Philmont Scout Ranch, in Cimarron, New
Mexico. I am here with three of our council volunteers ge ng trained on providing quality
council leadership and service to our units. Our incoming council President, Sco Bentley,
our council commissioner, Chrystene Speed, and Area Two assistant area commissioner, Joni
Mickna have taken a week of their vaca on to help plan the future of the Golden Spread
Council. Training is vital to the success of a council, a district and a unit. Encourage your unit
and district leadership to a end training on a regular basis, so that your Scouts have the best
program possible.

The council has just printed council calendars that are available at program previews and provide all of the important training
and program dates. Make sure that you review these and plan accordingly.
