Landon Donovan's name speaks volumes
ormer Redlands East Valley and Redlands High
School student Landon
Donovan has the sports collecting
industry in a pickle. Fresh off back
to back Major Soccer League
championship seasons with the
Los Angeles Galaxy and having
kicked a match winning goal in the
2011 World Cup, there has been a
marked increase in demand for his
collectibles," said a spokesman for
the Upper Deck Company's customer service department in Carlsbad. However, with hints of his
leaving soccer for an indefinite period, Upper Deck is selling all of
his products at 50 percent off.
Donovan sits in exclusive company at Upper Deck. He is one of
the company's Big-5 in popularity
and sales, resting somewhere between icons LeBron James,
Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and
Rory McIIroy. Upper Deck signed
Donovan to an exclusive contract
in April 2011, making Upper Deck
the exclusive providers of his autographed trading cards, memorabilia and game used equipment.
Upper Deck would not reveal the
terms of the Donovan contract, but
sources said it is a seven-figure
deal.

said, "it is cool to be on a card, on
a magazine cover, or in a video
game. It validates you. It's awesome. Having an Upper Deck card
circulating helps a lot with recognition. We collected cards as kids,
mostly baseball cards." He told
that his current favorite item to
collect are jersey's of other
player's. He said one reason he
signed with Upper Deck was to insure fans that they were getting authentically signed items. He noted
there are his forged autographs in
circulation. "It's frustrating to see."
Upper Deck was selling an official limited edition 2011 MLS
soccer ball autographed by Donovan with his MVP inscription for
$439.99. An online survey of other
companies listed his signed jersey
for $670 and a signed 8x10 framed
photo for $119.99. There is a limited edition large poster signed and
in a display case for $1,448. The
highest end Donovan item was located at sportsmemorabilia.com
who is selling a game-worn autographed and inscribed uniform including cleats at $13,157.50. The
uniform was worn in a Los Angeles Galaxy game against the New
York Red Bulls and comes with a
letter of authenticity and safety
hologram.
"Landon Donovan has nearly
single-handedly reinvigorated the
sport of soccer in the U.S.," said
Jason Masherah, Upper Deck vicepresident of marketing. Information from the Premier Athlete and
Celebrity site indicates that Donovan receives anywhere from
$10,000 to $50,000 per speaking
appearance. He was honored by
ESPN in a ceremony held at Redlands East Valley two years ago,
but he did not graduate from there.
He spent his senior year at the U.S.
Soccer Development Academy in
Bradenton, Florida. He did play
some matches for REV his junior
year, enough to be named to the
Parade Magazine All-American
team, but most of that season he
played on the U.S. National Under
17 team.
He spent his freshman year at
Redlands High and according to
most reports was the Citrus Belt
League MVP at REV in his sophomore year. Donovan told Top
Drawer Soccer.com that he remembers as a high school freshman watching the seniors playing.
He recalled the prep hierarchy,
where the seniors taught the
youngsters. "I do miss that. I wish
I could have gotten to the point
where I could have been a senior
and paved the way for the younger
guys. Those couple of years were
some of the best memories of my
life. The bus rides after school to
go somewhere to play a game. It
was just fun."
