WEB Site: www.swcweb.org SWC’s Intrepid Traveler It Is a New Season First Members Meeting Sept 8th The wheel dip in the Atlantic was in South Yarmouth, MA at Bass River Beach 4,315 miles and 77 days later (according to Bill Kornrumpf’s journal). As you can see it was a beautiful day. An amazing adventure. For those of you just joining us, Bill’s exploits can be found in his journal at: http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/Korntour2011 By the way, you can help support a good cause while reading Bill’s journal. Bill is doing this ride in part to raise the awareness of all the good things that Engineering has done for us. With that he would like for you to help by supporting the Edison Tech Center in Schenectady, NY (a small organization dedicated to honoring the legacy of those who have brought us the Miracle of Electricity). If you make a Tax Deductible Donation of $35 or more, you are eligible to receive a DVD of one of the original wizards of the electrical age. More about the trip and pictures on pages 3, 4 and 6. Welcome Back Pizza Night. Spend a few hours with your friends and share adventures and pizza to kick off the coming ski season. Get up dated on what the club accomplished last year, where we are now, what we need to do, and where we'd like to go. Board members will provide updates on the various functions of the club. Help yourself to FREE pizza and hear the latest on lift ticket sales, club finances, membership levels, activities, and news on the clubhouse. Be part of the club and participate in determining the direction of your club and get jacked-up for the winter of 20112012. See you in September. There is a social session from 7:00 to 7:30 where, over a beer or an iced tea, you can catch up on what is happening in the Club while the formal meeting starts at 7:30. Ancient Order of Hibernians 1748 State St. is just east of Rt 7 (the Cross town) in uptown Schenectady. To find the Ancient Order of Hibernians take State Street toward Albany. Bill’s Ride into Schenectady Can you imagine, after 72 days and 4000 miles of riding, going to bed in your own house and then getting up to ride 5 more days to Cape Cod? Thats right - Ask anyone who purchased the over 500 SWC discount lift tickets last year skied at near half price. When they stayed at the lodge, they still were skiing for less than any posted price or discount for day ticket. (Even with the $20 membership) We will begin to have details in the next few Chatter's but rest assure, you can make your vacation plans knowing SWC will terrific discounts for you again this year. And Yes - you DO have to be a member to both purchase and use the tickets. These are mountain requirements, insurance and and tax law issues. So, sign your friends up who may want to go skiing with you. Sign them up early and they may want to go more often ! You can still support the Edison with a donation now that we know that the final distance traveled was 4,315 miles. Any amount will be appreciated and that would only be $43.15 at one cent per mile. Your donation to the Edison Tech Center: www.edisontechcenter.org/donate.htm will help further our goal of () telling our youth what a good profession engineering is and that more engineers are needed to make the world a better place to live in. The Edison web site has been getting 100,000 hits per month so we are reaching many people and we realize that the web is a powerful tool for reaching out to our young people. The number of young people choosing engineering as a career continues to drop in the developed world yet the demand is rising. The field can provide a satisfying and well paid future for many. The Edison Tech Center hopes to inspire more into a life of engineering as well as preserve the great legacy of engineering behind us. The center must be maintained: artifacts and workshop areas need funds to cover the overhead and operational costs. Online educational multimedia materials must adapt and grow in order to continue to benefit the public in all locations. Contributions are tax-deductible and qualify for GE matching funds. Private contributions are confidential and very much appreciated. Bill’s Quote of the trip: “It has been an amazing journey and one I will cherish as an experience of a lifetime. And the celebratory drink of Champagne… 4 Sept 1, 2011 Monday Night Canoeing Monday Night Paddling began on May 2, and continues every Monday evening after that through October 31. The group gets together at Kiwanis Park (Rotterdam Junction at Route 5S) at 6pm. Experienced and non-experienced paddlers are welcome – there generally is someone in the group that is willing to give some paddling advice. On the remaining “potluck” night (see below), you might want to start paddling around 5pm. Canoes, paddles and wet suits are available (see later) but if you have a life vest (PFD) you should bring it along. Potluck Suppers The Potluck Suppers have been held on the second Monday of each summer month at Kiwanis Park. So far, potlucks have been held on 6/13, 7/11, 8/8, and the last one will be on Sept 12. Food serving starts at 6:30pm. These are popular get-togethers, so come and join in. Bring a hot or cold dish for the group (remember to put food in it) and your own beverage. Heidi Walsh has again graciously agreed to spearhead these events, and I hope other people will volunteer to help as well. Join in the NNYP Canoe/Kayak Races Two of the three NNYP sponsored races have now been run – the Towpath Regatta and the Electric City Regatta. Many thanks to Goeff Moore and Kim and Ed Greiner and their merry band of helpers. The final regatta of the season is the Barge Chaser, being run by Anna Palmer, 489-5092 or [email protected]: It will be held on Sunday, September 25, at Grafton State Park, just outside of Troy. Registration at 9:30 am; with races beginning at 10:30 am. The 1st race is 7 miles w/portage. The 2nd race is for people who don’t want to paddle 7 miles, and is a 2.5 mile “sprint” (I normally do it, so the term “sprint” is used advisedly)! There is a $10 fee for racers, and $5 for youths – but no other fees. Potluck lunch will be in the Grafton Beach Tent after the races for participants (bring a salad or dessert or such to add to the supplied burgers, veggie burgers, & dogs). 5 Kayak demos will begin at noon and continue throughout the afternoon. Just sign in at the entrance hut; race held at the center of the Beach. NNYP Wed. Time Trials Wed Night time trials started May 4, and will continue until Sept 21. The start is promptly at 6:30 PM on the Mohawk River at the Aqueduct Park and Dock on the south side of the Rte 146 - Rexford Bridge. There's a class for any boat and paddler, so you're guaranteed to be a winner and you'll paddle faster making any future race go by quicker. There's a new short course option this year for beginning paddlers, takes about 16 minutes and you won't be bothered by racers boat wakes (the standard course is 3.6 miles and takes the faster paddlers about 27 minutes). No reservations required, just show up ready to start at 6:30 PM! Any self-powered craft is welcome - usually paddling are canoes and kayaks, sometimes war canoes, outrigger canoes, rowing shells, and sculls. There are age and gender classes for any imaginable paddler, Registration starts at 6, is free for club members, but is $10 for the season for non-members (the first night is free for non-members). Times are recorded for comparison during the season or against prior recent seasons. Coaching for racing or paddling technique usually is conducted following the time trial for all interested. Cancellation is only in cases of lightning or river over the bank. Further information is available from Alec Davis, 518 399-1435 or [email protected] Keep The News Coming Your Editor (me!) gets such a thrill when somebody sends in an item for the Blade. Send to Allan Foster: [email protected], 379 McCormack Rd, Albany, NY 12208, by the 10th of the month. Put NNYP, SWC or Blade in the email subject title line so I don’t Spam you out. We will be meeting at 11 o'clock with serving of club supplied hot dogs, tea, instant coffee, hot chocolate, mustard and ketchup at 12:30. Each person attending is asked to bring a dish to share with everyone, as well as your own dish, silverware, cup and napkin. We may walk a short distance on the bike path if there is interest. Mark the date on your calendar and be prepared for glorious fall scenery and great comradery. HELP WANTED There is an opening for a columnist to write the CONSERVATION CORNER. Terms to be discussed. The position could be for a single issue, a series of reports, or as a permanent position, depending on applicant's interests. If you enjoy research, have a keen feeling for environmental issues and like to write, please call Cecilia MacDonald at 872-0823 to discuss this unusual and highly desirable opening. Please call leader in advance; weather and other factors may cause changes. Please, no pets on any hike as a courtesy to others. This is a volunteer organization and with any activity there is a presumption of risk. Each participant is responsible for his or her own safety. Bring ample food and water, dress appropriately. Also in October, at as yet an unnamed date in early October, watch for a hike in Pack Forest in Warrensberg, led by Ruth Hasler. Among the trails we'll hike will be the Grandmother Tree Trail. We will also climb Ben Wood Mountain, a low peak with beautiful views. Look for further details in the next issue, and don't miss this fairly easy and rewarding hike, especially at this foliage resplendent time of year. Hike leaders: Please send your reports to: Cecilia A. MacDonald, 260 Sever Road, Delanson, NY 12053. Trip Tales July 16 - Three of us went to the 10th anniversary at Thatcher Nature Center. There was a dedication of the Fred Schroeder Memorial Trail and it was good to share this day with his family and friends. The three of us decided to hike along the trail to Thompson's Lake and even though it was hot out, the trail we took was in the shade so it was most pleasant. We even enjoyed free ice cream and cake to celebrate the anniversary. It was a very nice day. We're so glad the Nature Center is such a success. Congratulations to all who have made it so. CAM for RH Thursday, September 1 - The MacDonald Clan, Cecilia, Jody and Rob, invite you to join them on a hike up Acadia Mountain in beautiful Acadia National Park. This is a really nice mountain, only about 600 feet high (we're starting at sea level) but with all sorts of challenging aspects. The view of Soames Sound, the only fiord in the east coast (or maybe the continental USA), is spectacular and the climb down the other side of the mountain is exhilarating. We'll meet at the base of the mountain at 10 for any of you who don't mind the 9 to 10 hour trip up to Maine. Hope to see some of you there. 872-0823. Monday, September 19 - For those of you who like a closer hike, Merck Forest in Rupert, Vermont is beautiful at this time of year, so we'll trek the trails and enjoy the beginning of the fall color. Cecilia and Rob MacDonald will lead this hike. Call Cecilia at 872-0823 for sign-up and time and place to meet. 7 Membership is from June 1, 2011to May 31, 2012 (New applications received after March 1 includes following year) Schenectady Wintersports Club, Northern New York Paddlers & Mohawk Valley Hiking Club Please check your Newsletter delivery preference: Email notice that the newsletter is at the web site: ________ E-mail Address_______________________________________ Post Card Reminder notice: ________ for reminder notices: (that the newsletter has been posted to www.swcweb.org This saves trees & club resources).
