OUR LADY OF THE PILLAR A Parish Ministry of the Marianists
A Marianist Moment
August 15th, The Feast of the Assumption, commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into
Heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a Holy Day of Obligation.
It is also a significant feast for the Society of Mary as it highlights
their faithful devotion to Mary, mother of Jesus. Many of the Brothers
and Priests celebrate their vows on or near this feast. To the usual
religious vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the Marianists
add a fourth vow of stability, faithfulness to the congregation, and
special consecration to Mary. As an outward sign of this fourth vow,
they wear a gold ring on their right hand.
This weekend, and over the next two weeks, we join our Marianist
Community as they celebrate the following anniversaries~
Aug 14: Fr. Tom French celebrates 27 year as a Marianist
Aug 15: Fr. Joe Uvietta celebrates 65 years as a Marianist
Fr. John Thompson celebrates 23 years as a Marianist
Aug 16: Bro. Jim Eppy celebrates 34 years as a Marianist
Aug 18: Fr. Ralph Siefert celebrates 47 years as Marianist priest
Aug 22: Fr. Ralph celebrates 51 years as a Marianist
Aug 27: Fr. Oscar Vasquez celebrates 10 yrs as a Marianist priest
Aug 29: Fr. Oscar celebrates 28 years as a Marianist
Congratulations, Fr. Tom, Fr. Joe, Fr. John, Bro. Jim,
Fr. Ralph and Fr. Oscar!

Saints and Feasts of the Week
August 16: St Stephen of Hungary ~ devoted much of
his reign to the promotion of the Christian faith and was
thus anointed king of Hungary in 1000, receiving the
cross and crown from Pope Sylvester II. His crown and
regalia became beloved symbols of the Hungarian nation, and Stephen was venerated as the ideal Christian
king. Canonized in 1083 by Pope St. Gregory VII, he
became the patron saint of Hungary. One of the best
known representations of St. Stephen in music is Beethoven's King
Stephen Overture.
August 19: St. John Eudes, Priest (Nov14, 1601 – Aug19, 1680),
canonized in 1925; a French missionary, an outstanding preacher and
confessor; founder of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary and of the
Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge, and author of the Propers
for Mass and Divine Office of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
John founded 4 seminaries, but was unable to secure Papal approval of
his congregation . He shared with St. Mary Margaret Alacoque the
honor of initiating devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy
Heart of Mary.
August 20: St. Bernard, Abbot and Doctor ~ (1090-1153) had a great
desire to excel in literature so that he could study Sacred Scripture and
had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin. Bernard spent 40 years in
the cloister, founded 163 monasteries in different parts of Europe; at
his death they numbered 343. He was the first Cistercian monk placed
on the calendar of saints and canonized by Alexander III, January18,
1174. Pope Pius VIII pronounced him a Doctor of the Church.
August 21: St Pius X, Pope ~ (1835-1914, the 259th Pope
Aug 4, 1903 to Aug 20, 1914). Accomplishments of this
saintly Pope were the inauguration of the liturgical renewal
and the restoration of frequent communion from childhood.
He also waged an unwavering war against the heresy and
evils of Modernism, gave great impetus to biblical studies,
and brought about the codification of Canon Law. His
overriding concern was to renew all things in Christ. He promoted
simplicity of life, and humility of heart as the highest wisdom and
indispensable conditions of a perfect Christian life. “I was born poor,
I have lived poor, and I wish to die poor.”
Lunch will be in the beautifully appointed Westminster Dining Hall.
Depending upon the number of reservations, the cost of will be $25.00
- $35.00. Lunch is paid for individually. ($7-8 range)
Because the price will depend upon the number of people attending,
please bring a blank check on the day of the outing and we can settle

up then.
Please R.S.V.P no later than Sept. 1st to Pat McKinnis
314-962-3714 or [email protected].
August 22: The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary ~ Pius XII
pointed out that Mary deserved the title because she is Mother of God
and established this feast in 1954. It is celebrated on the octave of the
Assumption. Mary’s queenship has roots in Scripture. Her queenship is
a share in Jesus’ kingship. In the 4th century St. Ephrem called Mary
“Lady” and “Queen.” Hymns of the 11th to 13th centuries address
Mary as queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail, Queen of Heaven”.

Year of Consecrated Life
There’s a story told about a woman who prayed to the Virgin that one
of her sons would become a priest. She had seven sons, but all of them
married and raised families. Then she prayed that one of her grandsons
would become a priest. She had many grandsons, but none chose that
life. The woman continued her prayer. She was almost a 100 years old
and near death when one of her grandsons, at the age of 33, decided to
become a priest. She died a happy woman knowing her lifelong prayer
was finally answered. The story is true, told by the priest himself.
Prayer works; you just have to keep at it. Take Five for Faith
