Woodley Words Ma y 13, 2014 No. 8 We are very fortunate to have truly dedicated and hard working teachers at Woodley Hills. They spend countless hours preparing engaging lessons that are designed to meet the individual needs of their students. It is not unusual to find a teacher working with children before or after school helping them understand a lesson or complete a project. Even during lunch time, we find teachers giving of their time to mentor one student or a group. The teachers are committed to supporting our students in any way possible. Although most teachers do not join this profession expecting to be thanked everyday, we are fortunate to have parents and community members who express their appreciation. The staff truly appreciated the week of lunches and other special treats the PTA provided during Teacher Appreciation Week. A very special thank you to Angie Bryant for all she did organizing everyone and preparing food! Local Level IV Advanced Academics Program Comes to Woodley Hills!! Woodley Hills will be a Local Level IV Advanced Academic School next year due to the support of our staff, parents and community members. Thank you to everyone who attended a meeting, wrote an email or completed a survey concerning this program over the past few months. This would not have been possible without the hard work of Chris Fisher, our current Advanced Academics resource teacher. This new program will allow us to better serve all of our students, but especially those requiring a differentiated curriculum. It will also provide Ms. Fisher more time to spend in all classrooms and to collaborate with the teachers providing all children with more rigorous activities. Thank you again for helping us meet the needs of all of our students! Woodley Hills Math and Science Focus School 8718 Old Mt. Over 5,000 students visited the Washington D.C. Convention Center to participate in the X-STEM Symposium which offered engaging presentations by an exclusive group of visionaries and top role models (astronauts, engineers, scientists, astronomers, paleontologists and mathematicians) who aimed to empower and inspire kids about careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering & math). Our students heard talks, saw live demonstrations and looked for fossils that were unearthed from soil near the Potomac River. The students enjoyed talking to, getting autographs from and taking pictures with featured speakers Aaron Alford / Jason Osborne (paleontologists), Melina Bellows (National Geographic executive and author of National Geographic Kids), Alvin Drew (astronaut on Space Shuttle Discovery and former combat pilot), Jeffrey Bennett (educator, astronomer, author), Alan McCormack (educator, design engineering and invention, "imagineering") and Seymour Simon (children's science book author). This all day event covered a wide array of subject areas including space exploration, storm chasing, facts about planets, oceanography and much, much more! Students are pictured with Paleontologists Aaron Alford and Jason Osborne are holding a 5-million-year-old whale bone. Woodley Words Woodley Hills Battles Hard: A Big Win for School Spirit 1st Annual Staff Basketball Game On Thursday, April 24th, the Woodley Hills Beavers squared off with the Riverside Rockets in the first annual staff basketball game. Both teams fought hard and although Woodley Hills came up on the short end of the scoreboard, they scored big in school spirit as hundreds of students and family members filled the bleachers at Mount Vernon High School to cheer on their favorite players. Blue and white blanketed the stands and the “Let’s go Beavers!” chants rang loud onto the court. The Woodley Hills Cheer and Dance team showcased their talent at halftime and impressed the audience with their discipline and poise as they completed a well choreographed dance routine, while the Woodley Hills Beaver stared on in amazement. The game was intense and Woodley Hills tied it up early in the second half, but the Rockets persevered to pull out the win 45-32. Courtney Strauss and Micheal Scharkowski left if all out on the court and Marvin Cruz and Matt Shoop came up with some key baskets to keep the Beavers in the game. The bench for Woodley Hills really stepped up and made some key contributions to make it a true team effort as Woodley Hills prepares for redemption in the off-season. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Cruz for putting a great team together in coordination of the event. There were many staff members who worked hard to organize the various aspects and once again, the Woodley Hills Family did not disappoint. Thank you to all of the fans and volunteers who came out to support in making this a memorable event for the Woodley Hills community. This friendly exhibition between the two schools hopes to be the first in a longstanding tradition between the neighboring elementary schools. -Paul Basdekis Woodley Words International Festival Our International Festival and Carnival 2014 was an absolute success! An event this grand is only made possible with the support of our wonderful parents and staff. We had over 600 people participate and share their smiles with us. A HUGE thank you to all our families that took the time and shared their culinary arts with everyone! What a treat it was to taste such a variety of foods from around the world. It was lovely to see so many dressed with their typical attire from their country of origin. Ms. Downham, Ms. Budny, and all our talented students did an amazing job with their musical performances. Mr. Scharkowski and his group of energetic students did the Haka dance from New Zealand. It was extremely entertaining! Thank you to our parent volunteers, incredible staff, and some of their spouses for helping serve the food and clean-up! A big thank you to Mr. Shoop for taking the reins with the building and supervision of our new stage. Of course, it wouldn't have been possible without the brains and brawn of our helpful dads; Mr. Pabich, Mr. Stankiewicz, Mr. Obeng, and Mr. Ballantine. Our PTA and all our parent volunteers were very busy with the cake walk, bounce house, and obstacle course. The kids had a blast! Our kids also enjoyed making the traditional international festival dolls that decorated our Woodley Hills. Ms. Dees captured some amazing pictures. Thank you to our custodians for all they do! We are already thinking of ways to make International Festival and Carnival 2015 even bigger and better! We can accomplish so much when we work together! Woodley Words Let’s Have a Picnic Food Safety Tips 1. Preparing, serving, and eating safe food is important whether we are at home, or on a picnic. We must constantly practice safe food handling to avoid illness. 2. Keep cold foods cold (below 41°F) Chill all meats, egg products, starchy salads, and custards to below 41° F before packing for the picnic. Put cold food into a well insulated, lidded cooler with ice around it. Put the cooler in the passenger area of your car rather than in the hot trunk. Keep your cooler in the shade and avoid opening and shutting the lid too often. 3. Don’t spread the bacteria, which may infect the food and ultimately you. Wash your hands before working with food. Wash your hands again after working with raw meat or poultry. Put the cooked meat onto a clean place for service. 4. Cook meat thoroughly to an internal temperature of 165° F and serve immediately. Put leftovers in the refrigerator immediately when you get home if you have not been gone more than 4 hours. Providing you have practiced all the above safety tips, your food should be safe to keep and eat the next day. Pack your picnic basket and cooler and enjoy a safe picnic.
