14th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in its annual report of colleges. Our program
tied with Penn State, the University of Maryland, and the University of Washington, and
outranked institutions such as Boston College, Carnie Mellon University, Case Western
Reserve, the University of Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Ohio State. “By placing 14th in the
country in the U.S. News & World Report college rankings, our Management program has
achieved an important national distinction,” Dean Eisenhauer noted. “We have earned our
reputation by focusing on three elements of education that are central to our mission:
competence, compassion, and conscience. Our students not only acquire competence through
first-rate technical and evaluative skills, but they also develop conscience by studying business
ethics, and compassion for others by undertaking service learning and social outreach in the
Jesuit and Mercy traditions.” “And this recognition is significant because it demonstrates that
students can receive a world-class business education right here in Detroit, with access to
top-ranked faculty and academic programs, as well as internships and career opportunities at
major corporations,” Eisenhauer added.

Congratulations to graduate students Alex Tolksdorf, ’13 and Nick
Cannon, ’13 on having research articles published in academic
journals. Alex, who earned his BS last spring and is currently
completing his MBA, published “Toward a Pragmatic Truth in
Accounting” in Dialogue, the journal of the Phi Beta Tau honor
society, and coauthored “Perspectives on the LEED (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design) System as a Green Certification
Standard” in the Journal of Sustainability Development. Nick, who
earned his JD and MBA degrees last year and is currently completing
the graduate certificate in Business Turnaround Management,
coauthored “Telemedicine” in the American Journal of Health Sciences. Congratulations to MBA student Anai Orozco, ’13,
who passed the Audit section of the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. Anai completed her undergraduate major in
Accounting last spring, and is currently employed by Ernst & Young.

The College of Business Administration Student Advisory Board, (SAB), hosted its annual Hot Dog Day on October 23, 2014.
The “meet and greet” event gives students and faculty an opportunity to engage in casual conversation while enjoying hot dogs
grilled by CBA staff and faculty. If you would like more information on how you can become a member of the SAB, please

Beta Gamma Sigma Student Leadership Forum
CBA students, Colleen Kurecka and Kylie Birney attended the 2014 Beta Gamma Sigma Student Leadership Forum in
Indianapolis, IN on November 6 - 9th. The "Beta Gamma Sigma Student Leadership Forum brings together student members
from colleges and universities across the country for a chance to improve their leadership skills. A hands-on experience, the
Student Leadership Forum challenges the chosen participants to examine questions such as, “What Kind of Leader Will I Be?”
Team-building exercises, social activities, networking and other activities make the Student Leadership Forum a very positive
step forward in the professional lives of those taking part." If you are interested in additional information regarding Beta

Business 1600 Students Raise over $1800
CBA Students Inducted to Alpha Sigma Nu
The freshmen in Dr. Mary Higby’s class raised $1,817 through
service-learning projects in the Fall, and donated the funds to
Campus Kitchens. Campus Kitchens accepts donations of
surplus food from the campus cafeterias as well as other
suppliers and delivers food to homeless shelters. CBA
student, Brielle Plair is the Vice President for Finance with
Campus Kitchens.
Congratulations to the following CBA students on being
inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the international Jesuit honor
society, in December.

Welcome, David Gumbel
The College is pleased to welcome Mr. David Gumbel, ‘13 as its new development director. Prior to
joining UDM in January, Mr. Gumbel worked for more than seven years in Alumni Relations and Annual
Giving at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan
State and an MBA from the University of Detroit Mercy.

Award. Ravinder is the owner of Tim
Hortons Café and Bake Shop of
Rochester Hills.
Congratulations to CBA alumna Mirela Mesic,
’13, on receiving the University’s 2014 Agere ex
Missione Award. Mirela, who served for a number
of years as a UDM Admissions counselor and
completed her MBA last year, currently teaches
business courses part-time at Oakland Community
College.
CBA Alumna Recognized for Social Entrepreneurship
CBA alumna Caitie Goddard, ’06, was featured in After the Game, a publication of the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in December. Caitie, who played basketball for UDM as an
undergraduate, co-founded and directs the IC3 Academy, which promotes social entrepreneurship around
the world. IC3 is the academy’s acronym for I Can Create Change. The article is available at

Faculty Excellence Award
Congratulations to Dr. Gregory Ulferts, who received the University’s 2014 Faculty
Excellence Award in November. The award is given annually to an outstanding faculty
member nominated by his or her peers and selected by a committee comprised of previous
recipients. Dr. Ulferts, who teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in Decision
Sciences, also serves as executive director for the International Association of Jesuit Business
Schools and vice chairman of Financial Executives International. He has been engaged in
numerous professional activities in small business and strategic management and been
recognized with various civic awards throughout his career. He is extensively involved in
community organizations and boards at the local, national, and international levels.
UDM offers Free Income Tax Preparation Services
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)
February 7th, 14th and 21st

March 14th, 21st and 28th.
The College of Business Administration is partnering with the Accounting Aid Society and the students of Beta Alpha Psi
(honorary society for financial information professionals) to sponsor a VITA site at the UDM McNichols campus again this
year. VITA is an IRS program offering free income tax preparation for low income families and individuals. We are looking for
volunteers to assist in this endeavor. Those interested in assisting or finding out more information are encouraged to contact
Dr. Jeanne M. David, [email protected]. Plans are to offer assistance six Saturdays during the upcoming tax
season. Tax preparation experience is welcomed, but not required. General information about the program can be obtained
atswww.irs.gov/Individuals/Free-Tax-Return-Preparation-for-You-by-Volunteers. CBA graduate and undergraduate students
and alumni are encouraged to participate! Service may qualify for service learning experience for class and program
requirements. What a great way to give back to the local Detroit community where you work, study, or received your education!
