Welcome
Dear student,
First of all a warm welcome to Nijmegen! You’ve had a lot of information during the orientation week, the
combination of this and the huge lack of sleep makes it hard to remember everything well. That’s why we made this
special introduction-edition of our club magazine in which you can read everything about who and what NSSSV Lacustris is.
We are the Student iceSpeedskating and inline Skating club of Nijmegen.
Maybe you already know how to skate and you want to continue this sport during your student time, or maybe you
want to do something else than all the mainstream sports. In any case you’re in the right place with us!
Skating is a real Dutch cultural sport and although Nijmegen is not a big ice-skating city, we do have an ice track
that opens first and closes the last of the Netherlands. The main pro of not being a big ice-skating city is that our
track is not as crowded as most ice tracks in the country, which makes it much better to practice on.
Normally ice tracks for speedskating are approximately 400m, but ours is only 333m. This means that the curves
are the same as other tracks, but the straight parts are shorter. So we can practice the curves more than anywhere
else. All the people that are more experienced agree that the curves are much more fun than the straight parts!
Lacustris really isn’t only for people that already know how to skate. We have groups for all levels, so for both rookies as well as the advanced skaters. Skating is not as hard as it looks, provided that your skates are sharp.
Everybody can learn it! And what is more fun and Dutch than skating?!
See you on the ice!

Introluuster’s Lacustris
About us
The Nijmeegse Student ice-Skate- en Skatingclub Lacustris was established in
1993. At the time it was named the Skating Pinguïns. over time the name has
been changed into its current one: Lacustris, which comes from 'Gerris Lacustris',
the Latin name of the common pond skater, a small insect which seems to 'skate'
over the water surface. The mascot of Lacustris is named ‘Gerris’. When you become a member, you will meet him!
Activities
Collalbo speedskatingweek
Every year we go to Collalbo for a practice week. Collalbo
is next to Bolzano in North-Italy, just behind the
‘Brennerpas’. At 1198m above sealevel, south of the
Alpes, is the open-air 400 meter icetrack with very good
and fast ice.
Since the first time in 2000, a group of enthousiasts travels
to Collalbo for a week full of training, fun and enjoying the
surroundings and views. There also is a test competition at
the end of the week in which it is really cool to see your
name on a big screen with your time!
Winter camp
Guaranteed to be a fantastic weekend! We travel to an
icetrack in the country with a big group to have fun and
skate on the local icetrack.
Ardennesweekend
Every year on the long weekend in Spring we go to the
Ardennes with our roadbikes for four days full of cycling,
terraces and fun. We also see a lot of other student
speedskateclubs that go to the same area that weekend.
For this weekend you need to have some experience on
the roadbike.
Clubnight
Every third Wednesday of the month, we come
together in Cafe Maxim to have a nice evening. From
21.00h all the members are welcome to chat and have
a drink. Sometimes we have a themenight, like around
Valentinesday.
IUT party
After the IUT of Lacustris, which is at the end of the
season, there is a spectacular party. During this party
the big prizes of the season are handed out, like the
club championships, the Personal Best trophy and the
target times trophy
Read more about the IUT under ‘competions’
Dinner roulette
It’s in the name: An x-course dinner where you go from
place to place in Nijmegen with every course.
You’ll bike in a group through Nijmegen with the help of
clues and assignments to find the house of a member
where you can enjoy a home-cooked meal.
Apart from all this, the activity committee organizes a
different activity each month.

Introluuster’s Lacustris
Committees
In addition to Lacustris’ board, there are also different committees that help keep the club going. Every committee
has its own tasks and responsibilities, like organizing activities, competitions, editing the club magazine and much
more.
By joining the board or the committee you’ll get actively involved in the club and it’s a good way to meet a lot of people. It’s also a very good and fun experience.
If you’re interested in joining a committee, just ask the board or the committee for information and possibilities.
Board
The board is of course busy with managing the club. It has
six members who each have their own tasks and
responsibilities. The board changes annually.
President: The ‘boss’ and the ‘face’ of the club
Secretary: Is busy with all the administration
Treasurer: Responsible for all the financial matters
Competition secretary: Controls all skate- and practice
matters
PR-Commissioner: Gets sponsors involved, organizes the
introduction, is the go-to-man for everyone interested and
controls all the other PR-business
General boardmember: Helps the other boardmembers
where necessary. His main focus is on inline skating and
marathon.
Activity committee (AC)
The AC of Lacustris organizes (almost) everything that
happens next to the ice! Most activities are only loosely
related to skating and are just about fun. In this way there
is a great balance between seriousness and fun!
PR-Committee
This committee supports the PR-Commissioner in her
tasks. This involves the sponsoring, keeping the external
relationships going, realizing the club clothing, lending the
skates and organizing the introduction activities.
Inline skate committee
This committee organises everything around the
skatingactivities, for example tours and skatingdays. They
support the competition secretary and board member with
organizing practices.
Natural ice committee
As soon as the temperature hits -0 celsius this committee
looks out for places to go where we can skate on frozen
lakes or canals. They organise trips and keep everyone
posted on events that will take place all over the country.
Media committee (MC)
The MC is responsible for making the ‘Luuster’s’. This
club magazine is published 4-6 times a year.
Be careful with what you say, anything can end up in the
magazine!
Marathon committee
Since last year, Lacustris has provided marathon skating
practices thanks to subsidy from the RSC. This committee
is responsible for everything concerning the practices and
competitions.
Technical Committee (TC)
The committee with the most speed skating involved. The TC organizes all ice skate related activities, like the annual IUT and and a special training in
which your skating will be filmed. The recordings will
be used to improve your techniques. Furthermore,
they make sure everyone will have their training with
people of the same skill level. It also helps with organizing the summer practices
Lots of fun if you like skating!
Collalbo committee
Every year this committee organizes the practice
week in Collalbo, Italy. The committee takes care
of renting the apartments, practice time on the ice,
food and relaxation.
It’s a committee that is active from October until
January.
Are you a member and would you like to join one or
more committees? Contact the concerned
commisson or the board. They can provide more
information about the tasks and responsibilities of
the committee.

Practices
Winter season
During the winter all the groups practice twice a week on the ice. There are five different groups: the A- B- C- Dand E-group (From beginner to advanced). At the beginners level you mostly work on the basic techniques with the
help of a variety of different exercises. The more advanced groups focus mostly on endurance and speed, but they
still pay attention to technique. The practices are not obligatory, so it doesn’t matter if you can’t make it every time.
Besides the practices on the ice, we also have a Core-stability practice in the Radboud Sports Center.

Summerseason
We don’t take a break summer. The ice track is closed, so we seek our resorts in other sports. All the practices
are open to every level, and will be given in a way that you can participate at your own level and pace. They give
you a good base for the winter season.
In summer, the focus is on condition and strength, but also the coordination is being trained.
Monday: Core-stability practice
Time: 19.30-21.00
Location: RSC, Multipurposeroom 1/Sportzaal
During this practice the focus is on the muscles in the
abdomen, back and legs. We do this with different forms of
exercises. There are multiple exercises for the abs and back
muscles. This way you will get more stability in your core
which will help you improve your skills on the ice.
Furthermore there will be attention for the strength in the
legs. For this we also use different exercises.
Last, but not least, we will ‘skate on shoes’. With specific
exercises we grind the moves in summer, so you’ll have
more time for other technique improvements in winter.

Tuesday - Inline skating
Time: 18.30 - 20.00 uur
Location: Parking lot Triavium
During the training there is attention for balance and coordination. Of course we also skate to improve endurance. There are
exercises that are typical for an speedskater, but also exercises that are typical for a inline skater.
If you want to join us for a try out, contact the board! They will
make sure there is someone to go to the location with you. You
can also borrow equipment like the necessary protectors and
skates from us. It is obligated to wear a helmet and wrist
protection.
In the case of bad weather, the training will be cancelled. This
will be announced via both the Facebook page and the website
earlier on the day.
Wednesday - Cycling practice
Time: 18.30 - +/-20.30 uur
Location: We start at the blue statue in front of the Valkhof museum.
In this practice there will be worked on endurance and a bit of power
workout. For this, we use different types of practice forms and of course
the surroundings of Nijmegen.
A lot of the practices are on well known routes or we cycle in groups to
make sure that people of all levels can join.
During this practice you’re obligated to wear a helmet. Also remember to
bring lights, a spare tire, water and possibly some food.
Thursday - Dry practice
Time: 18.30 - 20.00 uur
Location: Heumensoord & Leemkuil (Gather at the
main entrance of the RSC)
This practice is all about coordination, strength and
skate exercises. Every week we go to Heumensoord
(running) or to the Leemkuil (by bike).
Both locations have their own practice opportunity,
which guarantees variety.
Don’t forget to bring some water.

Competitions
IUT & NSK's
All the student ice skating clubs in the Netherlands organize competitions on a regularly Every student is allowed to
participate at those tournaments. One competition that every club organizes annually is the IUT, the Inter University
Tournament. The IUTs is divided into several categories so that everyone will be challenged on his or her own level.
Lacustris’ IUT is always at the end of the season, when most other tracks are already closed. This IUT is also our
club championships.
Besides the IUT’s there are also the Dutch Student Championships (NSKs). There are a couple of different NSKs,
like the NSK Allround, supersprint, marathon and sprint. The NSKs have different levels as well, skaters with and
without a competition license.
Becoming competition skater
Lacustris also offers the opportunity to become a competition
skater. Every two weeks a local race is being held in Nijmegen,
and the only things you need to participate are a license and,
pretty straightforward, skates.
This license costs approximately sixty euro per season,
depending on the age class you’re in.
You really don’t have to be a really good and experienced skater
to participate in the competitions. Skating is an individual sport
that can be practiced on every level. The fun thing about the
competitions is that the only thing on your mind has to be your
own performance and improving your own skills. Most of the
competitions are test races and then only your own results and
improvements matter. You’ll skate the same distances on most
competitions, so it’s really easy to try to beat your own times and
see your own improvements.
At every race Lacustris is represented, supporting everyone at
their very best.
Lacustris is a club where the most important thing is to have fun
skating, but there’s also a lot of room for people with more
ambitions.

All set for skating
Club clothes
As you might know, an icetrack is pretty cold. You could
go iceskating in bikini or swimshorts, but this is not really recommended. That’s why Lacustris has it’s own
beautiful clothes.
During practices you’ll mostly wear a salopette (trousers
with bib) with a red Lacustris jacket. If you want to impress your buds you can choose to wear a marathonsuit. (racing clothes without a cap suitable for marathons). Are you planning to skate races? In that case it
is recommended to purchase a racesuit. (A full suit with
a cap).
Lacustris also has a magnificent summercollection, with,
among other things, runclothes and bikeclothes.
Next to all these sportsclothes, we also have a nice
warm Lacustrishoodie in our clothingline.
You’ll probably be wondering how to get all these fancy
clothes.
The PR-committee organizes an evening to fit and buy
these fancy clothes a couple of times a year. On these
evenings you can fit the clubclothes and order them.
These nights are often after the trainings. if you can't
wait to fit those fancy clothes, you can always contact
the PR commisioner by sending an email. When in
stock, you can get your fantastic clothes immediately.
If you want a tracksuit next to all these nice clothes, you
can order one as a member of Lacustris at the RUshop.
This will be printed for you with the club’s name.
Iceskates
For the real beginners, there are ‘combi-noren’; a
high synthetic shoe that offers a lot of support. The
lowershoes noren are more suitable when you get better at
iceskating, although it is important that the shoe gives some
support for your ankles. The best thing you can do to know
what kind of shoe and brand is the best for you, is go to a specialized iceskating shop like ‘Brun” and try on a lot of skates and
ask for advice.
Almost all the more experienced skaters and competionskaters are skating on clapskates. These skates
ensure that your outlet is longer, so you’ll go faster.
Are you doubting between regular skates or clapskates? Ask advice from your trainer or someone with
experience from the club.
Additional
Apart from the clothing and iceskates, you need some
additional supplies. Gloves are obligated, a cap is recommended for some protection and to keep warm.
Other than that a cap just looks cool!
To protect your iceskates as good as possible during
walking next to the ice you’ll need special protection.
Also, glasses can be useful during iceskating. Not just
because of the shiny lights at the track and the
exhausted look in your eyes, but also for the cold
wind.

Introluuster’s Lacustris
The icetrack, ‘het Triavium’
The icetrack is located at the wild west of Nijmegen, Dukenburg. This is a bit outside of the center, but there is a (in
case of a broken bike or extreme bad weather) a bus stop and train station across from the track.
Our track is, in contrast to most speedskatingtracks, which are 400m long, only 333.33(33333333)m long. The
curves are the same, but the right parts are a bit shorter. Perfect to practice a lot of curves! For the fast
speedskaters it is much easier to do one round under the 30sec. It takes some time to get used to the track with
competitions because you start at different spots and ride more rounds than on other tracks.
The unique part of the icetrack is that it is on the first floor. On the ground floor in the middle is an ice hockey rink.
But most important: Triavium is one of the 4 tracks in the Netherlands which is fully covered by a roof and is not influenced by weather circumstances. This means that it's always comfortable on the ice, even when it might freezing
cold outside. Apart from Thialf (The iceskatetemple of the Netherlands) and Enschede and Tilburg. Surpisingly,
speedskaters are actually a tinsy bit afraid of cold weather.
The icetrack will officially open at the end of September, but two weeks before the grand opening you have the possibility to train as a speedskater at special practiceblocks. The icetrack closes at the end of march/ beginning of
April and the last training is at the end of march.
At public opening hours you can secretly practice for only €5,30 when you bring your studentcard.
Check out www.triavium.nl for more information.
