For our forty-fourth season, with a full forty
pages, this is our biggest brochure to date and
we hope reflects the diversity and range of our
programme. We have 53 nights of comedy,
32 performances of children’s shows, 15 jazz,
cabaret, classical and big band evenings, 2
weeks of musicals , dance shows, talks, music
video, magic and even 9 performances of plays!
So we’re very excited to be bringing such a full
season to you.
We are changing things in the bar, moving
the front door in order to lengthen the bar
counter and make service smoother at the
busiest times. Work will take place in early
September when we will need to close for a few
days so apologies now for the inconvenience.
The terrace is having some TLC too with new
furniture and lots of planting, so enjoy when
it’s done!
We welcome onto the Playhouse Board David
Merrick as Chair, having recently chaired at the
Theatre Royal and Chris Williams to provide
wise financial advice. I am very grateful to
them for their support, now and
in the future, and also to the hardworking, creative and strong staff
team.

ARE YOU SITTING
COMFORTABLY?
SAT 1 OCT 8:00PM
He’s married, has two kids, a dog and an
eye-watering mortgage in these times of
austerity, but remains resolute that a career
in the unpredictable world of comedy was
absolutely the right way to go (it’s far too
late to try something else now).
Rob takes this trademark comedic
storytelling to a career high in this show,
as he leads us on an irresistibly hilarious
journey of enforced introspection, that has
taught him to relinquish any attempts to
control his life and to face down literally
one of the most awkward situations you’re
ever likely to hear about.

There’s Something About Gary... and that
something is he likes to write and perform
jokes. An awful lot of them. This new
show will once again showcase exactly
why he is seen as the premier gagsmith of
his generation.
Through Twitter and TV he’s become
one of the most quotable comedians in
the country. He loves each and every gag
and you can’t help but be carried away by
his infectious charm. He’s like a cheeky
schoolboy who can barely hide his glee at
every punch line.

THE VANISHING MAN
FRI 13 JAN 7:30PM
“I’ve been able to work out, deconstruct and
rebuild every trick I’ve ever seen. Except this
one.”
Directors and performers Simon Evans
(magical consultant to the NT, Old Vic

recipient of the Close Up Magician of the
Year award) and David Aula (The Cement
Garden and MEAT), team up to create
a time-hopping, misdirection-abusing,
mind-bending examination of what really
happens when a man, in full sight of his
audience, simply ceases to be.

JAMES SEABRIGHT PRESENTS
THE REMAINS OF TOM
LEHRER (PERFORMED BY
ADAM KAY)
SAT 14 JAN 7:30PM
The satirical songs of Tom Lehrer have
delighted and horrified audiences for
decades, both through his own rare,
acerbic performances and in the revue
format of the West End and New York hit
show Tomfoolery.
Following sell-out London shows, Adam
Kay comes to the Playhouse with his
new take on Lehrer’s songbook, with
everything from pigeon poisoning to
masochistic tango via nuclear oblivion
being revisited from the contemporary
perspective of this award-winning
performer. The front man of London
Underground Song creators Amateur
Transplants, has also been heard on Radio
Four’s The Now Show and has extensive
writing credits including Crims.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S
LONG LOST FIRST PLAY
(abridged)
SAT 4 FEB 7:30PM
The acclaimed stars of the West End stage
are back with another barnstormingly
irreverent and breathtakingly hilarious
celebration of our cultural heritage – as
seen through the eyes of three Americans
wearing trainers. In a better-late-thannever nod to the Bard’s 400th anniversary,
the fearless trio present this ‘new’ play
by the man himself, as discovered in a
Leicester car park! The show, mercifully
abridged by the RSC from its full hundred
hour running time to a more palatable
ninety minutes, embarks on its debut UK
tour following world premiere seasons at
the renowned Folger Shakespeare Library
and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The building is accessible in all public
areas and on stage to wheelchair users
and those with mobility difficulties.
There are also accessible toilets inside
and on the terrace. There are three
wheelchair user spaces on the balcony,
which are reached using a platform
stairlift. Please note that the lift can
carry a maximum weight of 230kg.
There are also four end seats in the
main seating area for people who are
able to transfer from collapsible aids.
Accessible seats will be released to the
general public only when all other seats
are sold.
The Playhouse has two state-of-the-art systems
to help the hard of hearing, both through the
Sennheiser infra-red system – one for use with
a hearing aid and one without. They work best
when used in the central seats in the auditorium.
If a digital hearing aid is worn, please check if
it is loop-enabled with your supplier.
We are occasionally able to offer captioned
performances. Captioning converts the spoken
word into visible text that provides deaf,
deafened and hard of hearing people with
access to live performances along with their
companions.
