C O M P A N Y Annual Report THE SEASON OF BRIGHT BEGINNINGS 2015 Our Mission Broadway Rose Theatre Company exists to create unparalleled musical theater experiences that invigorate audiences and enrich our communities. www.broadwayrose.org 503.620.5262 P.O. And it was, right up to the final curtain” – The Oregonian “When it comes to Broadway style musicals, few local theatre companies can even hope to compete with Broadway Rose’s big summer productions...the Oklahoma! audience will see and hear a consistently professional, first-class show – elaborate and evocative sets, effective lighting, superb leads and vocal ensemble, crisp choreography, and an orchestra to die for” – Westside Theatre Reviews We work every year to fulfill our mission to create unparalleled musical theater experiences that invigorate audiences and enrich our communities. The 2015 season was no exception. We again produced six spectacular mainstage musicals: The World Goes ‘Round, Grease, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Oklahoma!, Adrift in Macao and A Taffeta Christmas. In addition, our children’s productions of Sleeping Beauty and Peter Pan in Neverland and our teen musical Wizard of Oz saw increased participation. We broke attendance and ticket revenue records with several shows and launched our 25th Anniversary Season in a strong financial position. The Year in Review With the departure of our executive director in March, we hired deShauna Jones as development director. She joins an already strong management team of Sharon Maroney, producing artistic director; Dan Murphy, general manager; and Alan Anderson, marketing director; and she has helped us begin to shape our vision for the next 25 seasons. Funding to support Broadway Rose Theatre Company comes from a variety of sources. In 2015, ticket sales contributed to 63% of total income, while donors and events approximated 29% of total income. We spend more than 86% of our dollars on artistic programming, with just 14% going to management and fundraising expenses. I want to thank all of you for making 2015 a spectacular season and for continuing to celebrate with us at every show and event. You certainly made 2015 our Season of Bright Beginnings! You can’t top a Broadway Rose production.” – audience member The World Goes ‘Round. Photo by Craig Mitchelldyer. Grease sets records At 7,794 tickets sold, both ticket revenue and attendance for Grease eclipsed all other New Stage shows in Broadway Rose history. “Broadway Rose Theatre has done it again. What an energetic company of actors who did an absolutely outstanding Grease! I am always amazed when this company goes one better than the last.” – audience member Peter Pan draws record-setting audience Peter Pan in Neverland, a premiere production by Annie Kaiser, became the company’s bestselling children’s show to date with 3,060 tickets sold. The show featured campers from one of the two 2-week drama camps for children ages 8-12 (the other was Sleeping Beauty). A total of 49 children participated in the camps. The teen workshop ran for 3-weeks with 36 students and culminated in a production of The Wizard of Oz. Broadway Rose launches Authentic Community Engagement Project The company received grants from the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation and Oregon Community Foundation grant to create an Authentic Community Engagement plan. Over the course of 18 months with consultant Bonnie Ratner, company leaders and key ambassadors will develop strategies to more fully include and engage diverse audiences, artists, and community members. Spring gala nets record income The fall 2015 fundraising campaign inspired a 30% increase in giving compared to the 2014 fall campaign. Guild marks 10 years The 2015 annual gala – with the Oklahoma!-inspired theme “Hootenanny!” – raised a record-breaking $83,000 to support musical theater productions and education programming. A matching grant was given by the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation. The Broadway Rose Theatre Guild celebrated a decade of supporting and building community at Broadway Rose. Internship program going strong Broadway Rose artists honored 2014/15 season Portland Area Musical Theatre Awards were presented to Peggy Taphorn (Choreography, The Music Man), Jennifer Goldsmith (Supporting Actress, Whodunit...The Musical), Jeffrey Childs (Musical Direction, The World Goes ‘Round), and Emily Dew (Playbill Cover Design, Whodunit... The Musical). The 2014/15 season Drammy Award for Musical Direction also recognized Jeffrey Childs for The World Goes ‘Round. BroadwayWorld’s inaugural Portland Awards honored Thoroughly Modern Millie for Best Actor in a Musical (Joe Theissen), Best Actress in a Musical (Claire Avakian), Best Direction of a Musical (Lyn Cramer), Best Ensemble in a Musical, and Best Musical; Phil McBeth also earned a nod for Best Lighting Design for Adrift in Macao. Fall fundraising campaign a success “We’re so lucky to have this showcase for these marvelous productions right in our own backyard” – audience member Miller Foundation grants $200k James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation awarded the company a four-year operating grant for $50,000 per year from 2016-2019. “Even though it may take us over an hour to drive to a performance, we have bought season tickets for ten years and have never been dissatisfied.” – audience member Broadway Rose’s student technical internship program – the only one of its kind in the area – had 36 student interns in 2015. The program fosters relationships between professionals and students interested in technical theater as they work together to mount productions. 25th Anniversary Season announced Celebrations kicked off for the 25th season at the Curtain Up season announcement event, which revealed the 2016 lineup of musicals with the theme “There’s a place for us.” Grease.
