home houses a wealth of
deductions that can open the door
to significant savings at tax time.
But which costs are actually deductible?
Of course, consulting your tax advisor is
the key to ensuring that your write-offs
are right-on, but here is an overview of the
typical deductions that might maximize the
returns on your investment.
your lender, these costs are often shown
on your mortgage interest statement. The
closing statement on your new loan may
also include real estate taxes, which could
be deductible as well.
Home Improvements.
It is important to keep receipts for your
home improvement expenditures. Although
the interest paid on a home equity loan or
line of credit is often tax deductible.
The bottom line.
Owning your own home yields a host of
advantages—everything from a sense of
pride and freedom, to long-term investment
opportunity. And at tax time every year, it
can really bring home the savings.
Points.
Also known as loan discount or mortgage
origination fees, points are often paid to
the lender upon purchasing a home. This
cost—even when paid on your behalf
by the seller—may be tax deductible as
a prepayment of interest if certain basic
requirements are met. Normally, points
can be deducted in the year that they are
paid; however, in some situations, they are
deducted over the life of the loan.
By having your tax advisor review your
closing statement, you potentially can
capitalize on tax benefits available from
paying points on your new mortgage.

Mortgage Interest Payments.
A major tax advantage for homeowners,
mortgage interest is usually deductible on
a primary residence, as well as on a second
home. Each January, over the life of your
loan, your lender should provide you with
a Form 1098, which outlines the amount of
interest you paid for the year.
If you pay off your loan early and are
charged a fee for doing so—often known
as “prepayment penalty”—this cost may
also be tax deductible as mortgage interest.
In addition, even late payment charges
may be deducted as mortgage interest in
some cases.
Real Estate Taxes.
These annual taxes, or “property taxes,”
based on the assessed value of your property
may be a considerable deduction each year.

own your home, they could help lower your
taxes when you sell it.
Home Equity.
Leveraging the equity in your home to set
up a home equity loan or line of credit
could mean tax benefits that would not be
available through other credit sources such
as credit cards or personal loans, because

ou call a home-care agency and
hire a caregiver to tend to an aging
relative at home. You expect the
caregiver to go grocery shopping, prepare
meals and clean the dishes, and even
vacuum.
But the caregiver won’t do any of it, or
even take your relative outside for fresh
air, and instead sits inside all day watching
television and making personal phone calls.
This disconnect between expectation and
reality — sometimes laced with racial,
class, cultural and language undertones —
is just one example of a growing caregiving
crisis in our country.
“A communications problem, often
stemming from different expectations
. . . exists between paid caregivers and
care recipients and their families,” says a
sobering 82-page report titled “Caregiving
in America.”
On one side, “families often assume that
paid caregivers are fairly well paid, and are
unaware that a large share of their payments
goes to the agency,” said the report by the
Caregiving Project for Older Americans.
“And there is often the expectation
that the caregiver will make the patient
‘better,’”which is not realistic.
On the other side, “although many paid
caregivers are highly motivated, others may
be poorly motivated or even apathetic about
their patients because of low wages, little
chance for career development and other
negative aspects of their job,” the report said.
The low wages and few fringe benefits,
low job satisfaction, emotional and
physical burdens and the lack of a real
possibility for career development “all
contribute to the critical shortage of
paid caregivers in the United States,”
the report said. Caregivers spend much
of their time standing or walking and
must carry out unpleasant duties such
as emptying bedpans. And although
many care recipients are cooperative and
pleasant, others “may be irritable, abusive,
depressed, angry or otherwise difficult.”
In these candid terms, “Caregiving in
America” exposes the growing gap between
available caregivers, paid or unpaid, and the
growing need for them.
Today more than 12 million people in the
United States, about 80 percent of them 50
or older, need some form of long-term care,
anything from help with transportation,
grocery shopping and housework to
Among adults who do receive care at home,
80 percent are cared for by family, friends
and unpaid volunteers, usually women.
Altogether, about 21 percent of American
adults provide some level of unpaid
caregiving, a stressful responsibility that
often leads to loss of personal time, missed
career opportunities and even depression,
anxiety and insomnia.
“Older care recipients are deemed
disposable and without value, and women
continue to be the primary caregivers of
family members,’’ the report said. “Like
other unpaid work, their contribution to
society is not included in national income
accounts.”
In a separate study, Peter S. Arno, a health
economist from Montefiore Medical Center
in New York City, estimated the value of the

assistance with activities of daily living
such as eating, dressing and getting in and
out of bed.
But many who need this help go without
it. An estimated 20 percent of adults
needing assistance can’t find either paid or
volunteer help, said Larry Wright, director
of the Schmieding Center for Senior Health
and Education in Springdale, Ark.
“If 20 percent of our older adult population
is going without the care they need,
imagine what that percent will be as
the number of older adults increases,”
said Wright, who is co-director of the

free services family caregivers provide to
their loved at $306 billion a year nationally
in 2004. That’s almost twice as much as the
combined amount of $158 billion spent on
paid home care and nursing home care in
the same year.

calls for the development of standards for
caregiving training and other reforms, is

My favorite room in my house
is the living room. It’s the best
because it has a big-screen T.V.
Not like the great room that has
a T.V. the size of my head. It also
has surround sound that makes
everything louder. My other
favorite thing about the room is
the furniture. The couches are
fluffy, bouncy and comfortable.
I also like the DVD player. And
we have a lot of great DVDs.
I like that it’s really close to
the kitchen so that when I’m
watching T.V. or a movie, I can
get up and get something to eat
and it won’t take me forever.
When I have friends spend the
night, we sleep on the living
room floor and on the couches
and watch movies until we fall
asleep. It’s also a great place for
family get-togethers. The only
downside is that it doesn’t have
any videogames hooked up to the
T.V. The videogames are hooked
up to the tiny T.V. downstairs.
And, if it had a computer it would
even be better. Even without the
computer and videogames, it’s
my favorite room.

ASK THE BUILDER
Years Of Know-how Go Into
Installing A Hardwood Floor
By Tim Carter
Tribune Media Services
COLUMN 655
DEAR TIM: I am thinking about installing
hardwood flooring. The hardwood flooring
I want to use is the traditional tongue-andgroove, 3/4-inch thick hardwood lumber. I
own many different power saws and other
carpentry tools. Do you think I can achieve
nearly professional results as I try to install
the hardwood flooring? What tips can you
share to help me get professional results at
do-it-yourself prices? —Bob K., St. John’s,
Newfoundland, Can.
DEAR BOB: Since I don’t know the level
of your carpentry skills, I am going to say
maybe. The traditional hardwood floor
installation process is not that difficult,
but the many different tricks and tips are
what separate professional installers from
those who aspire to have their years of
accumulated knowledge.
Your collection of saws and other carpentry
tools will come in handy, but realize that
professional hardwood flooring installers
come to the job with an arsenal of assorted
hand and power tools. They have special
nailing machines, some pneumatically
powered, that drive special barbed nails at
the precise angle and depth through the
tongue of each strip of hardwood flooring.
You can hand-nail hardwood flooring,
but I am sure you will make a mistake
or two, and your results will be less than
professional. The special nail guns can be
rented.
You may also need a router equipped with
a special bit. It is not uncommon for a
professional to rip a piece of hardwood
flooring to make it fit against an existing
piece. To make the hardwood flooring
pieces interlock, a new groove has to be

FLOORING
TIPS & TRICKS
Professionals use a rubber mallet to
pound the new strips of flooring into
place against the flooring already
nailed to the floor. Each strip of new
flooring needs to be tight along
the long edge and the short edge
where it butts against the piece next
to it. You will notice that the tongueand-groove feature of each piece of
hardwood flooring not only is along
the long edges, but also on the
short stubby ends of each strip.
One of the most secret tips is
reversing the direction of the
tongues and grooves. Professional
installers don’t always start laying
a floor on one wall and work to

the far wall. They may start in the
middle of the room for any number
of reasons. When this happens, a
special strip of wood that is the
thickness of the tongue but twice as
wide, is installed into the groove of
the flooring.
This strip of wood allows the
installer to start laying hardwood
flooring going the opposite
direction so the tongues of the
strips are always exposed. The
tongues of each strip of hardwood
flooring must be exposed so you
can nail the hardwood flooring to
the subfloor.

For Chocolate Lovers

Chocolate Cake.

My business partners might not be too
happy to hear me saying this, but if you
really want to impress your sweetheart on
Valentine’s Day next Monday, don’t go out
to dinner.
Instead, consider making the effort to cook
a special meal at home. Make a little effort
to set a beautiful table, complete with flowers and candles (neither of which should be
scented, so they won’t interfere with your
senses of smell or taste). Choose a good
wine that you know your beloved enjoys,
perhaps including Champagne or some
other sparkler.
Your menu doesn’t have to be elaborate,
and it shouldn’t be so heavy that it puts a
damper on romance. Start the meal with
some passionate pink smoked salmon, perhaps. For the main course, cook something
simple but of excellent quality, whether it’s
a steak, lamb chops, a fish fillet, or a simple
stir-fry of shrimp or scallops — whatever
your loved one would enjoy the most. Add
a sauteed vegetable and some rice and
you’ll have a lovely plate.
I think the main Valentine’s Day cooking
effort should go into the dessert, which
undoubtedly should be chocolate. My
Flourless Chocolate Cake, so dense and
rich that it’s almost like a sublime fudge,
is an excellent choice not only because it’s
so easy to make well in advance but also
because it offers such decadent pleasure for
lovers of chocolate.
There’s no big secret to making the cake.
The most crucial step is to start with the
best tasting, finest chocolate you can find,
made from the highest quality cacao beans
and with a higher concentration of chocolate solids to cocoa butter. I’m especially
partial to such imported brands as Valrhona
from France or Callebaut from Belgium, as
well as to the outstanding American chocolate made by Scharffen Berger in Berkeley,
Calif. You’re likely to find at least one of
those brands in gourmet shops and some
well-stocked supermarkets.
After you’ve got your chocolate, take
some care in melting it. First, use a sharp
knife to cut it up into pieces of about 1/4
inch. A double boiler, whether you use one
dedicated to that task or improvise one
from a saucepan and bowl as I describe in
the recipe, provides the very gentle indirect
heat that will ensure your chocolate melts
perfectly. (Direct heat, by contrast, can
scorch chocolate and cause it to seize up
into coarse, grainy, unusable lumps.)
Plan on making the cake several hours before dinner, or even a full day before. That
should leave you plenty of time to look after all the other important details of what’s
sure to be a memorably romantic evening.
FLOURLESS
CHOCOLATE CAKE
Makes one 10-inch cake
8 ounces good-quality bittersweet chocolate, cut into small pieces
4 ounces unsalted butter, cut into small
pieces
5 eggs, separated
Pinch of salt
2/3 cup sugar
Powdered sugar, for garnish
Unsweetened whipped cream, for garnish
Fresh raspberries, for garnish
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Butter and
flour a 10-inch round cake pan.
Bring about 1 inch of water to boil in
the bottom half of a double boiler or in a
medium saucepan. Reduce the heat to a
bare simmer. Put the chocolate and butter
in the top half of the double boiler or in
a heatproof mixing bowl large enough to
rest on the rim of the saucepan without the
bowl’s bottom touching the water. Place the
pan or bowl over the simmering water and
melt the chocolate and butter, stirring them
until blended.
Meanwhile, in another mixing bowl, whisk
together the egg yolks, pinch of salt and all
but 3 tablespoons of the sugar. Stirring continuously, pour the melted chocolate-butter
mixture into the egg yolks until thoroughly
combined.
In a third, clean bowl, put the egg whites.
With an electric mixer on medium speed,
beat the egg whites until they form soft
peaks that droop slightly when the beaters are lifted out. Still beating at medium
speed, gradually sprinkle in the remaining
sugar, continuing to beat the egg whites
until they form stiff but not yet dry peaks.
With a rubber spatula, fold a generous
dollop of the egg whites into the chocolate
mixture, just until a few streaks of white
remain. Add the chocolate mixture to the
remaining egg whites and gently fold to-
gether until thoroughly combined. Pour the
mixture into the prepared cake pan.
Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour and
15 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven
and immediately invert a cardboard cake
round and a wire cake rack on top of it;
then, protecting both hands with pot holders or oven mitts and clasping the rack and
pan together, invert them to unmold the
cake onto the cardboard and rack. Leave
the cake to cool to room temperature.
Don’t worry that its center sinks and cracks
slightly. Refrigerate until serving time.
Before serving, dust the cake with powdered sugar by spooning some sugar into a
fine-meshed sieve held over the cake, then
gently tapping the sieve. Cut the cake into
wedges and serve with whipped cream and
raspberries.

LYNN THOMAS HOMES My Answer
Q:
One of my coworkers claims
to be a Christian, and he’s very
active in his church and all
that. But he doesn’t seem to be a very happy
person, and in fact, he’s always very negative
and looking on the dark side of things. Do
you suppose he’s really a Christian, or is he
just pretending? — Mrs. S.Q.
A:
Only God knows the heart of
any person who claims to be a
Christian, and it isn’t our place
to judge them or decide whether or not they
actually are a believer. This is what Jesus
meant when He told His disciples, “Do not
judge, or you too will be judged”
(Matthew 7:1).
By Billy Graham

However, any Christian who has a joyless
attitude and is always looking on the dark
side of things is missing much of what it
means to be a Christian. It’s true, of course,
that we live in a very troubled world, and
Christians especially should be burdened
for a world that has lost its way and
abandoned God’s will. As Jesus prayed in
the Garden of Gethsemane shortly before

of blood falling to the ground”
(Luke 22:44).
But Christians also should be filled with
joy and peace — not because everything
around them is perfect, but because they
know Christ is in control. The Bible
says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”
(Galatians 5:22-23).
Instead, face your own need of Him
and open your heart and life to His
transforming power today.

How many computer owners does it
take to change a light bulb?
Only one, but he’ll have to go out and buy
the light bulb adaptor card first, which is
extra.
How many wrestlers does it take to
change a lightbulb ?
Three. One to yank the old bulb out, throw
it on the floor, try and jump onto it from a
great height, and act real surprised when it
rolls out of the way at the last minute; one
to pretend to twist the new one in round
and round so far it almost breaks; and some
guy in a black and white stripey uniform
whose function is never made quite clear
to protest about something or other, to the
complete indifference of the bulb changers.
How many bureaucrats does it take
to screw in a light bulb?
Seven. One to supervise, one to arrange for
the electricity to be shut off, one to make
sure that safety and quality standards are
maintained, one to monitor compliance
with local, state, and federal regulations,
one to manage personnel relations, one to
fill out the paperwork and one to screw the
light bulb into the water faucet.
