2011 Ashes Series 20 Cents
The great Sir Donald Bradman said, “Test Cricket is not a light-hearted business,
especially that between England and Australia”. This enduring
sporting rivalry, alive since 1882, the Ashes test series is the
backbone of Australia’s cricket calendar and part of our
national culture.
Played alternately in the summer
months of each nation, the 2010-11
series returns once again to Australian
shores.
The first test will be played at the Gabba
in Brisbane from 25-29 November 2010.
Will the new-look Australia side regain
the Ashes? Or will the confident
Englishmen record an historic (and
rare) victory on Australian soil?
The Ashes 20 Cents is a stunning example of cricket
regalia, featuring a stitched motif designed to
represent a cricket ball, is presented in large card
format similar to previous Ashes coins. This memorable
20 cent coin is certain to
be a proud addition to your collection.

coat. It is struck in 99.9% Pure Silver with a
weight of One Ounce. Then coin is
presented in a wooden case with full colour

the Sugar Glider.
Sugar gliders are tiny tree-dwelling Australian
marsupials that can glide through the air for up to
100 metres. At night, they come out to feed on
insects and the sugary sap of eucalyptus and acacia.
In her second outstanding design for Australian
Bush Babies, Elise Martinson portrays a beautiful
little sugar glider with its eyes bright and alert.

Christmas Lucky Dips
Lucky Dips have been a Christmas
tradition at International Numismatics for
over a decade.
Each year we accumulate thousands of
items that do not fit into our regular
catalogue offers. There’s coins, notes,
medals and much more. Interesting bits
and pieces from here, there and
everywhere.
We can’t guarantee what will be inside
but we can guarantee that the contents
will be worth at least
50% more than the
cots of the lucky dip
and could include items you have never seen before.
This year we have created new coloured packaging and offer
Lucky Dips in a range of values. You can choose the value and
quantity to suit.
Lucky Dips are available
in $2, $5, $10, $20
and $50 Values.
1963 - The Last
Predecimal Proof Set
1963 - Decimalization was just around the corner and the Predecimal series was drawing to an end. The
Melbourne Mint struck their last Proof coins that year in the usual denominations of Threepence,
Sixpence, Shilling and Florin. Just 5,042 Sets were struck - far less than any Decimal Proof Set.
This issue we offer this Final Predecimal Proof Set at a sensational price. McDonald
catalogue value is $945.00 and our normal retail price is $750.00. But whilst
stocks last we offer these popular 4-coin sets at the remarkable price of
only
$695.00

Three Rare George VI
10 Shillings Star Notes
Australian Star notes were first issued in the early 1940’s. The
notes were produced to replace those damaged during printing
and ensure continuity of serial numbers in bundles (counting
machines were still a long way off in 1942).
To distinguish the notes from regular issues the last number of
the serial was replaced by a star - hence the name Star Note.
These notes were produced in small quantities and few
survived their heavy use in circulation.
This issue we are delighted to present the rarest of the rare - a
full set of three George VI 10 Shilling Star Notes including
the highly desirable Armitage-McFarlane issue.
1942 Armitage-McFarlane
10 Shillings Star
Regarded as the rarest Australian Star Note. Vort-Ronald’s
Australian Banknote Pedigrees records just 29 notes sighted.
This example is made even more desirable as it is the last Prefix

was largely the demise of the paper note and the introduction
of Polymer replacements that kick-started this theme.

available so please ask.

Ivan “The Terrible” Silver Wire
Money from Russia
These fascinating little Silver coins come from
the reign of Russian Czar Ivan
“The Terrible”, 1557-1584. They

The Roman Empire began with
Augustus in
27BC and drew to a close with
the Emperor
Zeno in AD491. The
coinage of the
Romans provides a
fascinating insight
into the life and times
of the world’s most
powerful people of
their age. Most
Roman coins feature
a portrait of the Emperor or
a member of his
family on the obverse. Reverse
designs may
show a deity, landmark or present
propaganda in a form that
the
average citizen would see
on a
daily basis. Despite the glory
of the
Roman Empire and its great
military, architectural and
political feats, the life of
the emperor was often
troubled. The average reign
was only 6 1/4 years with
just 31% of Roman
Emperors dieing of

Coinage of Edward VIII - the Uncrowned King
Upon the death of King George V in 1936 His
son Edward was first in line for the British
throne. Edward was madly in love with an
American - Wallis Simpson. The problem
was that Simpson
was a
divorcee
(which
meant
she could
not be Queen
of England) and
Edward was faced with
a terrible decision - to marry the woman
he loved or to be crowned King. Love
prevailed and Edward’s younger brother
George VI became King. During the
turbulent months of indecision a handful of coins were
struck in Edward’s name. Two of the few countries to issue
Edward VIII coins were
Fiji and New Guinea who
both released Pennies in

1797 Cartwheel Twopence
28
There was a great shortage of government-issued
small change during the long reign of George
III 1760-1820. A proliferation
of private issues sprang up
and it was not until 1797
that Matthew Boulton
was authorised by the
government to strike
copper pennies and twopences
at his Soho Mint, in Birmingham. The large
size of the coins, which were based on
intrinsic value, combined with the thick rim where
the inscription was incuse led to the coins being nicknamed
Cartwheels. The Twopence, with a weight of 2 Ounces is one
of the largest British coins ever struck, yet with a low
value of just 2 Pennies. The Cartwheel coins certainly
saw use in NSW with the Penny being mentioned in
Governor King’s Proclamation of 1800.
We offer these popular coins in a
variety of superior grades.

Mastodons are an extinct
species related to the
mammoth and modern
elephants. They are thought to
have appeared about 4 million
years ago and were native to
both Eurasia and North
America. The Eurasian
animals died out about 3
million year ago but they
survived in North American until 10,000 year ago. The
Mastodon was woolly like the mammoth and similar in height
at 3 metres but differed
in the shape of their
teeth. It is their teeth that provide their
latin name meaning “nipple-teeth”.
The Mastodon was a food source for early humans but
paleontologists are still trying to determine if man was
responsible for their extinction. These teeth are from juvenile
animals and show the detail of both teeth and root. Approx
65mm in length.

Trilobite Fossils from The USA
Now extinct, the trilobite flourished
in the seas from the Cambrian
through to Permian Periods,
around 550 to 250 million years
ago. They ranged in length from
one millimetre to one metre.
Their name comes from their
division into three longitudinal lobes.
They were also divided into a head,
often with well developed eyes, and a tail. The thorax
had limbs to provide mobility across the sea floor.
These Trilobites come from the Wheeler
Formation in Utah, USA. They are the
species Elrathia Kingii and are around
520 million years old! They are very
detailed as the shale of the formation
provides a great medium for
fossilization. Overall size is
approximately 25mm. With descriptive
card.

Coins from a Ming Dynasty S h i p w r e c k
Recently discovered in the Makassar
Strait off the coast of Sulawesi in
Indonesia was a Chinese merchant junk
dating back to the Ming Dynasty
(AD1368-1644). On board was some
porcelain and approximately 50
kilograms of Chinese coins. After over
500 years in the deep waters of the
China Sea the coins have cemented
together into clumps - just the way they
went to the bottom. These coin clumps
comprise around 10 original Chinese Cash dating from the
early Ming Dynasty (no later
than AD1424) - a time of great
naval expansion by China. It
is said that the great explorer
Zheng He not only reached
the Cape of Good Hope but
also the America’s. These
fascinating ancient Chinese
relics are most collectable.

A relic from the age of dinosaurs, the Tuatara has survived only on
rat-free islands around New Zealand. A new
conservation management program has seen
some re-introduced to the mainland at
Karori Wildlife Sanctuary where it hoped
this endangered species will survive.
For nearly forty years the Tuatara
graced the 5 Cent coin but this
denomination has been discontinued. To
commemorate the survival of this
prehistoric lizard New Zealand has released a
very limited edition 10 Cent. Only 15,000
of the Brilliant Uncirculated coin have
been struck - a tiny number and certain to
ensure a rapid sellout. Presented in a
credit card style pack.

New Coinage Pair
On 31 July 2006 New Zealand
demonitized their old 50, 20, 10
and 5 Cents. At the same time
new, smaller and lighter 50, 20
and 10 Cent coins
were
released.

and 5 Cents. At the same time new, smaller and lighter 50, 20
and 10 Cent coins were released.
The coins retained the same designs but the 10 Cents
now features a copper finish and the 20 Cents has a
distinct edge. The coins were struck by the Royal
Canadian Mint in plated steel.
This terrific little Set comprises the new 10 and 20 Cents, both in Brilliant
Uncirculated condition, housed in a colour descriptive holder. Great
buying!

NZ Decimal Changeover Set
30
We had not seen these little Sets from New Zealand
before. They were issued to
commemorate the Changeover to
Decimal Currency in 1967. Each
pack combines a 1964 Penny (the
last date struck for circulation)
and a 1967 1 cent (first date).
Very similar to Australia’s 1966
1 and 2 Cent Pack which
catalogues at $95.00. With
interesting leaflet detailing
proposed changes to New
Zealand’s coins.
