In
addition to the retired volunteer
teachers, we’ve been fortunate this year to
have four college students from Saint
Anselm College join us — all looking for a
placement to complete their Service Learning Project. Two students joined us last semester and Katie and Lysette are doing
their Service Learning this semester. None
of these students is pursuing a career in
teaching. Their only desire is to broaden
their horizons and to assist others. John and
Nica enjoyed coming so much they returned
this semester to give of their time and both
have been doing a great job.

also have a student teacher from
Southern NH University who is pursuing a career in
teaching in Saudi Arabia where she hopes to return
after graduation – in April. Ghada has been with us
since January and Sister Germaine Goyette, CSC, is
her Cooperative Teacher. For Ghada, it’s a wonderful
experience! Teaching ESL at Holy Cross Family
Learning Center is providing Ghada with teaching
strategies and techniques, how to manage the classroom, how students interact with each other and how
the teacher interacts with them — important things
she is learning from Sister Germaine. She believes
she has a wealth of information which she will be able
apply in the future. Ghada earned a BA in English
Literature in Saudi Arabia and has been in the
United States since the end of 2009 earning a Masters Degree in Teaching ESL. In her words: “I will
never forget you…I love this place!”

COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS
Saint Anselm College
E
xperience Matters was
held October 24th at Saint
Anselm College and sponsored by the Center for Experiential Learning as part of their annual Professional Development Week
series. Participants play a key role in
broadening their students’ knowledge
of our organizations’ volunteer opportunities. Participating in service work
provides important and relevant experience for college students which, in
turn, leads to their success in the job
market.
NH Humanities Council
C
onnections — This was a
six-week program that was
sponsored by the NH Humanities Council in conjunction with Southern NH University.
The purpose of these sessions was to
teach the more-advanced classes of men
and women who attend ESL classes at
the Center how to read books with their
children and grandchildren.
Vocabulary words from the ―book of the
day‖ were written on the board and
pictures were shown to help with understanding the content.
We value our partnership with Holy
Cross Family Learning Center and
hope to continue working with you in
the future.
Easter Seals
C
HILD CARE ORIENTATION This session was presented by Easter Seals of
Manchester. The purpose of
providing Child Care Orientation was
to provide important information to the
women who care for children in their
homes.
Interest in this program was evident
considering the questions of clarification that were asked. Those in attendance learned that they can take care
of up to three children in their homes
with the permission of the landlord .
More than three children would require
further paperwork that would need to
be completed with Easter Seals.

November 9th, Dan Sczesney presented
Sister Jacqueline with a check in the
amount of $11,500 — the result of his
climbing the forty-eight 4,000-foot
peaks in the White Mountains of New
Hampshire in thirty days.
