2014 Iowa City Hospice Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors
Regina Elementary School’s 2015 Fabulous Fourth Grade Class
Iowa City Hospice’s Mission
is to be the leaders in providing exceptional patient-centered palliative care and grief support
to anyone affected by a terminal illness.
Iowa City Hospice’s Principle of Practice
As a community-oriented, not for profit organization, Iowa City Hospice is dedicated to offering services to
everyone regardless of an individual’s ability to pay.
Recognizing Those Paying It Forward
At the Walk for Dignity site are two Iowa City Hospice Tribute
Walls that recognize our most generous donors from the past
three decades.
Honorary Walk for Dignity Families, Estate Gifts, and
exceptionally generous Memorials are also recognized.
The Tribute Walls were made possible through a generous gift
from Hills Bank and Trust Company and in-kind support from
Watts Vault & Monument Company.

Dear Friend of Iowa City Hospice,
Sincere thanks are extended to all of you who have supported Iowa City Hospice with
your generosity of time and gifts over the past year. With your help, Iowa City Hospice
provided 1,508 days of community supported care in 2014!
In this report you will meet the Regina Catholic Education Center’s Fabulous Fourth
Grade Team, our 2015 Walk for Dignity Family. You will also read about how including
Iowa City Hospice in your estate plan can truly secure the future of this compassionate
care for our community.
In addition to hospice and bereavement care, we have expanded our services to include
support for caregivers through the on-line Living With Serious Illness web site. We
continue to expand Honoring Your Wishes, an advanced care initiative. You can learn more
about both of these important enhancements on our web site or by calling our office.
A current snapshot of our accomplishments and the services we offer is provided. We
continue to be challenged by changes in reimbursement from Medicare and other
providers making charitable gifts critical to our ability to provide service without regard
for ability to pay.
A much-needed remodel of our office was completed and celebrated with
Open Houses in the fall. The open floor plan will provide for expansion
and the flexibility needed by our on-the-go work force.
All are invited to join us at the Walk for Dignity on April 26, where
you can meet the new Executive Director of Iowa City Hospice, Karla Earnest. Yes, after
20 years there will be a change of Executive Director as Maggie retires.
Finally, we want to stress that all gifts are greatly appreciated and make it possible for
Iowa City Hospice to bring comfort and peace to those we serve, their caregivers and

Regina Fabulous Fourth Grade Team
Pays it Forward
At Regina Catholic Education Center service is part of the For most of the years since, the
curriculum. Teacher, Jared Galpin, emphasizes, “It is part fourth graders have been selecting
of our faith to do service.” Iowa City Hospice for their school Throughout the school year, each
grade in turn, selects a service project
and invites the entire to school to
participate.
In 2007, fourth grade teacher,
Diann Zirtzman’s sister, had a close
friend who had needed hospice care.
Impressed with the compassionate care
provided by Iowa City Hospice, Diann
asked school volunteer, Ginger Nowak,
to talk to the class about hospice care.
Ginger had been one of the early
volunteers who helped found Iowa
City Hospice, a community based not
for profit hospice that decades later
still provides end of life care to all in
need, without regard for ability to pay.
After Ginger’s presentation to
the class, the kids decided that they
wanted to help Iowa City Hospice.
The first year they collected supplies
as well as some monetary donations.
The following year they formed
the Fabulous Fourth Grade Team,
and participated in the Walk for
Dignity. In 2009, the students, their
families and a few family dogs again
participated in the Walk raising the
impressive amount of $2,046. Over
all the years they have participated
the team has raised $7,649!

of their loyal and heartfelt service,
the Regina Elementary School has
been selected as the 2015 Walk for
Dignity Family.
Regina Elementary School will
have their name inscribed in the
list of Walk Families on the Tribute
Wall at Willow Creek Park and the
Fabulous Fourth Grade will lead
the Walkers on April 26. As fourth
grade teachers, Mrs. Zirtzman,
Mr. Galpin and Mrs. Hindman
say, “What a fantastic way for us
to practice our gifts of stewardship
with our community partners, and
what a great way to have fun together
outside of our school setting! We
hope to see you there!”

Honoring Their
Wishes
Elizabeth Coulter’s personal story with hospice care began In her work as an Episcopal
when her father died in Kansas City in 2004. priest, she had seen a need for this

of hospice care meant - her father
suffered unnecessarily. Hospice was
finally called and for the last 12
hours of his life, he had peace.
“My mother, thankfully, had a
different experience,” Elizabeth says.
Iowa City Hospice was called in
when her mother became seriously ill
in the winter of 2007. She died the
following October. “In this time, she
and our family really were able to
take advantage of all that Iowa City
Hospice had to offer,” Elizabeth adds.
Elizabeth was so moved by her
mother’s experience that she became
an Iowa City Hospice volunteer,
working directly with patients. Her
involvement grew to include service
on the Board, and eventually serving
as a member of the original steering
committee of Honoring Your Wishes,
an advanced care planning initiative.

service. This program is now part the
ongoing ministry at her church. She
believes that Honoring Your Wishes
can ease turmoil at the end of life
and help ensure an individual’s end
of life care is as they wish.
As a lawyer, Chuck Coulter had
seen the need for advanced financial
planning. While putting their own
estate in order, Chuck and Elizabeth
drew up a plan for their assets that
includes a planned gift for Iowa City
Hospice.
It is important to the Coulters
that this compassionate care
continue to be available to all who
need it at a critical time in their lives.
They also want to ensure that grief
support, support for caregivers and
advanced care planning continue to
be available.
The Coulters hope that as others
look to the future, they will also
make a place for Iowa City Hospice
in their estate planning. There is no
better way to say “Thank You” for
the comfort and peace brought by
these treasured services.

Memorial gifts are a meaningful way
to honor a loved one while recognizing

Each fall, Iowa City Hospice
conducts an Annual Fund campaign.

Walk for Dignity
The annual Walk for Dignity is
held each spring on the third Sunday in
April at 1 p.m. in Willow Creek Park.
