The Program for Supporting the Translation and Publishing of Brazilian Authors aims at promoting Brazilian literature
and culture all over the world. Created by the National Library Foundation, an institution of the Brazilian Ministry of
Culture, the Program is intended for foreign publishers and offers financial support to the translation of Brazilian literary
works of all genres, as well as support to reeditons of books already published abroad.
It is the largest investment ever made by the Brazilian government to encourage the presence of literature from Brazil in
the international publishing market. Until the year 2020, the program will offer US$ 7.6 million in translation grants and
in support to publishing and reediting books by Brazilian authors. The program will be divided into translation grants
from US$ 2,000 to US$ 8,000 per work and support from US$ 1,000 to US$ 4,000 to reeditions of already translated
books at least three years before.
Applications for the program must be made by foreign publishers by means of a letter of enrollment and an application
form available at www.bn.br/translationgrant. Letter and form must be sent to the National Library Foundation along
with other requested documents, such as the publishing house’s catalogue, contracts and a copy of the book intended
to be translated.
Specific guidelines of the program will be made public until 2020. Applications will be evaluated by the end of each
quarter by the National Library Foundation Committee and the announcement of selected works will take place within
a 30-day period. Works selected through the 2011/2013 bid must be published until August, 2013. The amount granted
for translation and reeditions will be paid as follows: 50% when the grant is formalized and 50% after ten copies of the
book are delivered, once translated and published in accordance with the Program guidelines.
Brazil will be the Guest of Honor at the 2013 Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany, the largest event of its kind. This will be a
unique opportunity for Brazilian authors and publishers to showcase their work abroad. Our country expands its literature and culture throughout the world. Book market grows as a business, has its influence increased and develops as a
commodity exporter with the selling of publishing rights.

The editorial production in Brazil is rich and diverse. It reflects the multiculturalism and harmonious coexistence of various ethnic groups, which make up the population base in the country. That is why all people recognize themselves a
little in our literature and in our culture!
This peculiarity makes Brazilian books very attractive to the international market. So we are very happy to present them
to editors attending the Frankfurt Book Fair, where Brazil will be the theme country in the year 2013.
This catalogue brings together a number of excellent titles, revealing the high quality of our editorial production. We
want it to captivate readers across the five continents. Our goal is that, like our welcoming and cosmopolitan nation,
Brazilian books increasingly open their pages to the world!

dos Editores de Livros
The National Book Publishers Union (Sindicato Nacional de Editores de Livros - SNEL) has the responsibility of studying
and coordinating the publishing activities in Brazil. With 70 years of existence, SNEL works for the protection and the
legal representation of the book publishers in Brazil.
SNEL is affiliated with the International Publishers Association (IPA) and the Centro Regional para el Fomento del Libro
en America Latina y el Caribe (Cerlalc).
SNEL organizes Rio de Janeiro´s Book Fair – Bienal Internacional do Livro do Rio de Janeiro - one of the main events in
publishing in Brazil, whose first edition was in 1983, having, in its last edition in 2011, 950 exhibitors, in an area of 55,000
m2, and more than 600 thousand visitors.
We recognize the importance of participating in literary events not only in Brazil but abroad. For international fairs, SNEL
has an agreement with the Brazilian Book Chamber (Câmara Brasileira do Livro) and the National Library Foundation
(Fundação Biblioteca Nacional), to sponsor the Brazilian stand booth in Frankfurt and in several other exhibitions. This is
an initiative to promote and encourage the participation of ours 400 members in the international market. This catalogue is part of this strategy and represents a showcase of some of the current publishing production in Brazil.

and in the graphic production.
Our editorial focus is the children

Text and illustrations by Nadia Heppell
Learn the story of ten cute old
ladies who went out together
for tea. But, until they reach their
destination, these old ladies will go
through unusual situations. This
is a very funny playing number
text, with illustrations made by
award-winning cartoonist Duke
in another Celso Sisto´s book.
An ideal reading for children in
beginning literacy.
Be prepared the mature or little
reader if he thinks he already knows
the characters of this book. Enjoy
and get ready to fly in a swirl of
colors from the magical drawings by
Humberto Guimarães. The brazilian
character Saci and Little Red Hiding
Hood, both still with their red hoods,
are also on the exchanging e-mails
with each other, even living in the
woods. A lovely book, which one
finishes with a smile in the face: at
the end we grow up a little bit more.
The extravagance of the central
character´s parents ends up acting
in favor of the handsome boy
when he enters a Chinese school.
There he makes friends who do
not care about the fact that he
has an unusual name. One day he
meets someone with whom he
learns how to be proud of his own
name, wherever he is. With the
quirky humor of those stories that,
rather than inform or teach, are
designed to stoke the pleasure of
reading, Enrique Páez weaves with
much intelligence and lightness
an original text with the inimitable
Bat, frog, gecko. This book
doesn´t talk only about famous
animals. The author, Ronaldo
Simões Coelho, who already has
animal in his name – Coelho
means rabbit – reinvents
details and similarities as he
describes the characteristics of
each animal, telling everything
in poetry, like the woodpecker,
tickling the tree or the
grasshopper, pretending to be a
leaf. Angela-Lago, whose name
is the place where the animals
drink or swim – Lago means
lake – covers everything with
colors and textures, illustrating
this awardwinning book, to the
delight of young readers who,
like Ronaldo´s grandson, know
how to look interestedly to the
most ordinary animals.
Do you know those books that
mark our childhood and pass from
generation to generation? With the
first book of Nadia Heppel, a russian
artist. The book was already born
classic! With this new story about the
tradition of decorating Christmas trees,
the writer can handle what is essential
in human relationships and, through
the tale, conveys the beauty of great
friendships. It seems like that box of
jewelry, deep in the closet, that we pull
off with excitement when we want to
be a little closer to a starry sky.

The three great civilizations
that inhabited America before
colombus’ arrival – the Incas,
Mayas and Aztecs – present us
with their legends of wisdom,
respect for nature and love
between human beings. These
stories are told in both Portuguese
and Spanish in this fantastic book.
Suggestions for activities:
− Great liter aid for Spanish
language classes,
− Research aid on Brazilian
indigenous legends,
− Writing aid on the importance
of corn as nourishment in preColombian societies
Once upon a time there was an
old man whose name nobody
knew and so they used to call him
the “Mad Dervish”. He had walked
around the Middle East for a long
time when he arrived at a town
and started telling stories in the
main square. His stories were
entertaining but they also touched
people because they presented
real life situations with. This book
received many awards.
Suggestion for activities:
− Read in class;
− Create stories based on the titles
in the book;
− Discuss Arabic culture
comparing its similarities and
differences with the local culture.
We are moved by the author’s
narrative in this book which,
touching on the delicate topic
of pediatric oncology, achieves
a light text which encourages
voluntarism. It contains painful
stories, of resignation and love,
with strokes of humor. All the
profits from sale of the book are
destined for the Child Oncology
wing of the Santa Casa de
Misericórdia in Belo Horizonte.
We have already been able to
replace the hard metal chairs in
the waiting room with comfortable
long,
cushioned chairs where mothers
spend nights accompanying their
children. The bathroom of the
wing has also been renovated. We
hope to do much more for the
children and the “Pietàs”.
The amusing adventure of Juca,
his friends and his dog. Together
they build an enormous kite and
climb the mountain closest to
their city. They fly the kite there
high above, enchanting everyone
as it floats between white clouds
and the blue sky – at least that
was their intention! This book, in
addition to being an enjoyable
story that teaches, among other
things, how to make several
types of kites, also tells about
their origin. Most importantly, the
book provides warnings about
how we must be careful when
flying kites. Following this advice,
we can avoid the many accidents
that happen around the world
in the enjoyablepractice of this
pastime.
Zé lives in Cape Verde with his
grandfather Aurélio. He spends
his days in the Tarrafal, an old
prison that is used nowadays
as a school. It is said that an old
prisoner is still moaning in his
cell. It seems like his soul has not
been released… Will Zé have the
courage to end this torment?
This book was published
under the Carlos Drummond
de Andrade publishing support
program of the French Embassy
in Brazil and was supported by
the French Ministry of Foreign
and European Affairs. It was
acquired by the National Program
of Scholastic Libraries of the MEC
and its author went to Brazil
where he visited many schools
and lectured at some colleges.
Suggestions for activities:
− Search the map of Africa for the
island of Cape Verde;
− Research regions that have
droughts as in Cape Verde.

The Book, Friar Damian - The
missionary, written by Francisco
Lopes de Souza Neto, tells the
story of the life and work of the
italian friar who came to Northeast
Brazil in the 1930s. Venerated by
many faithful people, Friar Damien
has made pilgrimages to the cities
of Northeast Brazil, spreading his
“Holy Mission”. For many, he is
considered a saint, and is currently
in the process of canonization.
Meanwhile, Damian is seen as
a great communicator, able to
drag together crowds to hear him,
sharpening the curiosity of the
press and becoming a myth and
symbol for his people.
Considered one of the most
significant novels published in
the 70’s in Ceará, Parabélum
rescues a gallery of legendary
myths, idols, Gods, and heroes of
the northeast of Brazil. Through
the use of revolutionary fictional
methods, Gilmar de Carvalho
reaches his best creative
expression, and with which he
convinces us to have discovered
all possible horizons to be
trodden by his refined language.
According to the writer and
literary critic Joao Silvério
Trevisan, Gilmar de Carvalho,
in this book, weaves the
mythology of Northeast Brazil
immersed in contradictions
between the archaic and the
modern.”The person who reads
this adventure will discover one
of the most radical experiences
of contemporary Brazilian
literature.”
On the 100th anniversary since
the birth of the Brazilian author
Rachel de Queiroz (1910-2003),
the publishing house Armazém da
Cultura has made a collection of
unpublished poems and compiled
them in this book, entitled
Serenade.
Serenade contains lyrical poetry
of someone who is discovering
the world and feels the need to
express it in words. Rachel sets in
this book to her personal identity
and her literary ideology. The
poetic themes addressed by the
author are her own life.
Organized and presented by the
writer Ana Miranda, the book of
poems Serenade demonstrates
clearly who Rachel wanted to be,
and who she became, one of the
greatest Brazilian writers.
The Treasure Letter is written and
illustrated by Ana Miranda, and is
a message for children and adults.
She touches on current important
issues for children.
The text values and draws
attention to the child’s place in the
world. The treasure is the child.
At a time when contacts between
cultures intensify, in which the
individual takes precedence
over society and education is
universal, this book provides ideas
for understanding and accepting
differences.
Celebrating the fiftieth
anniversary of the Declaration of
the Children`s Rights, the book
comes with a poster with the text
of the document adopted by the
United Nations Assembly and
ratified by Brazil.
The book of Maria da Penha
I survived... this is my story,
chronicles the life of the author
who suffered a cruel and cowardly
domestic violence. Penha offers
her story to the whole society, as a
way to contribute to the rights of
women to a life without violence.
A long story which later became
the protagonist of an emblematic
international event of litigation
for access to justice and the fight
against impunity in relation to
domestic violence against women
in Brazil. As an Icon of the cause,
her life is now also symbolically
signed and marked under the
Law No. 11.340 in Brazil, known as
“Maria da Penha Law”.
The book is supported by the
Center for Justice and International
Law (CEJIL) and the Latin American
and Caribbean Committee for
the Defense of Women’s Rights
(CLADEM).

Scarlett Marton, Professor of
the University of São Paulo and
member of Groupe International
de Recherches Nietzchéenes,
investigates in this book the
relation that Nietzsche established
with his readings and the one
that he wanted to have with his
readers. In the core of the essays
that compose the book is the aim
to discuss the complex relation
between author and reader in the
context of Nietzsche’s thought.
Examining the precise form of
the chain that rises among the
readers and the readings of the
philosophical text, the author made
a reflection of the constitution of
the philosophical writing.
Sílvio Rosa Filho makes an
archeological investigation of the
development of cynicism that came
to the scene with the eclipsing of
the morality in the last centuries.
The book measures the crafts of this
phenomenon and situates it in the vast
constellation of concepts or protoconcepts. At the same time, Rosa Filho
points out the absence of roots in the
new philosophical tendencies and the
overturn of the moral discourses. The
author presents the moral vision of the
world as a shadow’s theater and leads
us to a harsh and inacessible colossus:
modernity and its means of dealing
with moral issues.
This book became a reference
in German philosophy studies in
Brazil. Contributors from major
universities of Brazil and other
countries make a deep and
comprehensive analysis of major
aspects of the philosophy in the
Goethezeit. Authors like Kant,
Goethe, Hegel, and Schelling
are analyzed by specialists in
texts written specifically for this
volume. Without pretending to
be a panorama of the period, the
book gives a good perspective of
the large scope of this period and
its authors.
Specialists like Marilena Chaui
(University of São Paulo), Vitorio
Morfino (Universitá degli studi
di Milano-Bicocca), and others
discuss the subject of what is
necessary or not in modern
philosophy. They analyze this
question that relates theology,
metaphysics, epistemology, ethics,
and politics in texts about Locke,
Leibniz and Spinoza, in a clear
demonstration of the importance
of the philosophical reflections of
the XVII century.
Dealing with a rare subject in the
Kant-Forschung, this book resulted
from the various ways of treating
the investigation of Kant´s texts and
his musical aspects. The ground for
this multiplicity is not the several
methods of the authors of the book,
it is grounded in the vast fecundity
of Kantian texts and the critical
thought. With authors from Spain,
Portugal, Brazil, Italy, and Germany,
this book is unique among the
critical fortune of Kant´s works.
This is the first work that came in
light from the partnership between
Barcarolla and the Brazilian Kant
Society - in the next months, Kant
and the biology will be available.

Gildo is very brave. He likes
roller-coasters, airplanes, horror
movies, and singing in public. But,
as it happens to almost everyone,
there is something he’s very afraid
of… Always on the night before a
birthday party of a friend, he can’t
fall asleep. Why?
Author and illustrator Silvana
Rando has already another 4 books
by Brinque-Book, besides Gildo:
she has illustrated Clara, Gabriel
and Gabriel já para o Banho and
has written Peppa, the story of the
girl with the world’s strongest hair.

Laura’s daddy picked up the
Secret Book of Princesses and told
her something that no one knew…
Discover this secret and don’t tell
anyone! Launched in Spring 2008,
the book has been a huge success
ever since.
Renewed Brazilian author, Ilan
Brenman, has already published
more than 30 books. Always
mixing fantasy and everyday life
in his work, Ilan puts a magical
perspective on his reader’s lives.
Illustrator Ionit Zilberman brings
her particular touch to Laura’s story:
bold and bright illustrations of
mixed techniques, such as collage
and drawings make the story come
to life in the reader’s eyes.
The author Daniel Munduruku
was born in Belém, state of Pará
and comes from the Munduruku
tribe.
Maté (Marie-Therese) uses
watercolor as her main technique.
Her realistic and colorful
illustrations bring the people and
animals she draws to life.
A story addressing the
environment, the need to preserve
water and respect nature. A lake
begins to dry - what now? Who
would be the responsible for
it? Illustrations in strong colors
represent animals and their
positions to face the threat of
an extinguishing lake. Among
accusations and responsibilities,
the animals challenge the
disappearance of drinking water.
(Ninfa Parreiras)
Milton Célio puts a new mystery
for his characters to solve, and
like other stories of his own,
the solution is a simple as it is
ingenious. Maté uses watercolor as
her main technique.
Obax, as the author clarifies, is
a story invented and unfolded in
Africa. It is not a recounted African
tale. It is pure invention in words,
names fetched from the African
culture (Obax, the girl, and Nafisa,
the elephant), in images.
A light and brief narrative,
underlined by fantasy and
playfulness, such dear elements
to children, it brings forth the
confrontation between adult and
children’s worlds, between reality
and fantasy. Between the world of
this side of the ocean (the reader)
and the world on that side of the
ocean: Africa, with some of its
colors and flavors. (Ninfa Parreiras)

The princess is beautiful. She is
a little mermaid with algae hairs
and soft fins. Her yes are the color
of the endless sea. When she was
a little kid, she lived happy and
freely. Now, as a teenager, she
takes care of her people trying to
give then more comfort. She had
a plan: habitation and health for
his people. She also wants to offer
then all kind of arts. She seemed to
be happy, however no one knews
that the princess, no matter how
hard she tried, could not cry. All
kind of sorrow and sadness was
hidden in her chest. The Princess
who Doesn’t Know how to Cry is
a wonderful story that prepares
children to understand better
their own feelings and don’t be

Danico, the Puppy is the history

He plays with everything he

written in rhymes, which makes

by Sandra Campos, illustrated
by Beto Candia and designed by
Eliana Godoy dos Santos. This
two books invite children and the
adult readers (parents, teachers
and book lovers) to get involved

of positive messages about the
importance of kids coming into
contact with books and toys.
The rescue of Tele’s life as a soccer
player in the early 50s, when the
Carioca soccer were at its apogee is
one of the most fascinatings topics
of this book. “Telê played for twelve
straight years for the same team,
a rare fact or barely impossible
nowadays. In the Fluminense, a
great team where Didi, Castilho,
and Pinheiro played, he lived glory
days inside a soccer field, wrote
the author. A book to be read and

They call themselves Captains of
the Sands, a gang of orphans and
runaways who live by their wits
and daring in the torrid slums and
sleazy back alleys of Bahia. Led by
fifteen-year-old “Bullet”, the band
including “Legless”, “Professor”, and
“Cat” pull off heists and escapades
against the rich and privileged. But
when a public outcry demands
their capture, the fate of these
children becomes a poignant,
intensely moving drama of love
and freedom in a shackled land.
Jorge Amado’s classic captures
the rich culture, vivid emotions,
and wild landscape of Bahia
with authenticity and brilliantly
displays the genius of Brazil’s most
acclaimed author.
A guy on the beach of Ipanema
starts to tell his story. The beach
is crowded, but he isn’t talking to
the chatty sunbathers around. He
doesn’t even look at anyone. And
how could he, with his head stuck in
a hole in the sand?
He is the ex-guitarist of a one-hit
rock band extinct for years, whose
albums are only found in used
record stores downtown. Alone,
holed up in his grimy studio, beside
a rusty-stringed guitar, counting
change that’ll afford him no
more than survival, the ex-rocker
remembers his hilarious adventures
on the road in the 80’s, and searches
for sex and company in the arms of
a pretty Korean clerk.
A girl crashes her car into a
lamppost and dies. The sweet
and shy Bernardo and the restless
Camilo, her elder brother, are
those who feel the loss most
sincerely. But they are not the
only ones. Polaco finds himself
haunted by his past love for
her. Lucas heard the crash just
outside his house. Santiago
appeared out of nowhere –
though perhaps a little too late.
A journalist was on-call
that night. And an adman is
commissioned to create an
educational campaign on road
deaths.
The girl’s death shows all
of them that they have to
reestablish connections amongst
themselves and that the world
they used to live in has assumed
a whole other rhythm.
A very old man lies in a hospital
bed. In a monologue directed at his
daughter, the nurses and whoever
else will listen, he tells the story of
his lineage, reaching back to his
Portuguese ancestors, then tracing the
line down to a baron in Brazil’s imperial
period, a senator of the country’s First
Republic, and his great-great-great
grandson, a playboy in today’s Rio
de Janeiro. It is the story of an old
family’s social and economic decline,
set against the backdrop of the last
two centuries of Brazil’s history. It is
also the story of the frustrated and
misunderstood narrator’s passion for
his wife, which brings her to a sad end.

Debut of the year – São Paulo
Literature Prize 2011
Following the steps of
autobiographic authors, such as
Art Spiegelman, Caeto uses his
life as material for an epopee of
lousy jobs, unlivable homes and
successive disappointments.
He is the lead singer of a punk
rock band, draws comic books
and has just been invited to
exhibit his paintings. But one
by one his projects collapse,
and he has to face a chronic
lack of funds, depression, and
alcoholism.
In this reconstruction of his
memories, nothing is left out: the
agitated night life in São Paulo,
his sexual adventures, his dad’s
agony as a victim of AIDS, and
the contribution of each person
who stood by him in his journey
to redemption.
The therapist Carlo Antonini
receives a new patient at his office
in New York. But what appears to
be a routine session on the eve of
his departure for a lecture sets off a
plot involving a turbulent marriage,
an organization suspected of
involvement in terrorism, a murder,
and a family tale of vengeance.
In this new adventure featuring
the protagonist of his acclaimed
debut novel, Calligaris once
again draws a parallel between
psychoanalytical and criminal
investigation. It presents both
passages of a classic thriller and a
reflection on individual identities
– whether ethnic, religious,
ideological or sexual – in the
contemporary world.
In Motherland, Bernardo Carvalho
orchestrates a multiplicity of voices
and points of view without ever
losing his focus on the recurring
motif of motherhood, interwoven
with a sense of orphancy,
groundlessness, and maladjustment.
“Mothers have a lot more to do
with war than you’d imagine”, says
one of the characters, and this novel
is a poetic demonstration of that.
Set against the backdrop of the
Second Chechen War in 2003, the
mothers in this book are modulated
and refracted from the various
intertwined stories and provide the
backbone of a singular plotline: the
struggle to save their sons from war,
solitude and crime.
The young Japanese executive
Shunsuke Okuda thought that
Iulana Romiszowska, a Rumanian
waitress, would be just another
girl in his life. But he will soon
discover that to touch the gaijin
is like “touching an unknown
animal”, and his raging obsession
sees him dive headlong into a
torrid and turbulent affair. Iulana
might just be the woman of his
life, but the problem is they are
being watched through a private
spy network.
In his third book, João Paulo
Cuenca constructs a modern love
story in which the fragmented life
of the megalopolis, omnipresent
voyeurism, and human
perversion are villains that shatter
all possibility of affection.
In May 2004, the US State
Department released the
transcription of the interrogation of
a former history student conducted
in a military hospital in Bolivia in 1967
by two renegade Cubans working
for the CIA. This is the fictional frame
for a spy thriller centered on the
figure of a bitter, bald, pot-bellied Che
Guevara, who is in Tanzania after the
Congo fiasco.
Paraphrasing history in diaries and
reports, Ferroni takes readers behind
the scenes during the formation of
urban networks of the international
leftist movement and out to the
battlefronts, recreating the events
of a tragic (and oft-times comical)
guerrilla war in detail.

Cecília enjoys her work as a
secretary at the dentist office of
Dr. Marcos, an easy-going man.
Everything is quite predictable
there. She could never have
imagined the police would come
by asking for information on her
boss one day. Dr. Marcos has
apparently disappeared without
a trace. He simply never showed
up at home. As if this were not
enough, there’s an odd detail:
Dr. Marcos’s car is parked in the
garage at his apartment building.
What’s happened to him? Cecília
tells Espinosa: “He was always
kind and considerate, never
raised his voice, never got in
a grump or complained about
things. He didn’t seem real.”
The stories collected in this
book could hardly be more
diverse: the first visit to a brothel,
a passage from the Brazilian
author Euclides da Cunha, the
life of men in exile, the platonic
love for an English girl. Hatoum
works on these fragments of
memory until they acquire
another character and turn out
to be perfect images of our own
desires and failures. What ties
these stories together is the
idea that if desire makes the
characters expand their field
of action and cross the barriers
of childhood and morality, class
and origins, these barriers never
admit defeat, and only await the
right moment to ambush the hero.
It is late Friday afternoon and,
as always, Pedro climbs onto a
bus in the city center to spend
the weekend with his girlfriend,
who lives in the outskirts of the
town. Tired after a week’s work,
oppressed by the heat, and
distracted by a portable radio
pressed to his ear, a book by
Charles Darwin that he slowly
leafs through, and the goings on
inside and outside of the bus,
Pedro commences a personal
journey that will crystallize
everything he sees and thinks
into a new, deeper, more critical
understanding of himself, the
society he lives in, the people in
his life and the world in which
they are immersed.
Fresh from the end of a
relationship and still reeling from
the suicide of a friend, the young
writer Anita decides to make the
most of the Argentinean launch of
her novel and spend some time in
Buenos Aires.
When she gets involved with a
mysterious fan and is introduced
to his friends, a group of writers
with a weird agenda, she begins to
let go of the past. Driving her acts
is a secret desire to have a child
and become “some man’s woman
and nothing else”.
Cordillera is a story about losses
and dreams, a reflection on the
often blurred boundaries that
separate fiction and reality, and the
way our lives can eventually hang
between both.
A decadent Chinese movie star
is suspect of a crime. A young
playboy is kicked out of home
when his affair with his stepmother
is discovered. A woman sees her
depressed ex-boyfriend even
though she has another man.
A pregnant old woman has dreamy
encounters with a whale. The
plots of Cachalot are intertwined
by visual elements, symbols,
backdrops and underlying themes:
the sea, phones, cameras, the
search for new or lost identities,
loneliness and the urge to reach
others.

Renato Polidoro meets Camila
at his dentist office, not during
an appointment but during the
shooting of some footage. A minor
miracle happens: the film student
falls in love with the dentist, an
inveterate wallower in self-pity.
When Camila finishes college,
she decides to drag her boyfriend
along on her dream trip to Havana,
Cuba, where she plans to make
a documentary. What starts out
as a caliente holiday turns into a
series of misadventures — and a
mysterious disappearance. Never
Goes Away is the fast-paced story
of an obsessive passion that finds
echo in the idiosyncrasies of a
country that seems to just drift
aimlessly along.
To fight terrorist attacks of the
most radical anti-Castro groups
in the USA, Cuba formed the
“Wasp Network”, a select party of
twelve men and two women who
infiltrated some of these groups
in order to gather information,
prepare for attacks, and deter
mercenaries working for them.
This book narrates in detail the
incredible story of these spies in
the struggle against organizations
that operated under the face of
“humanitarianism”, and enjoyed
the powerful support of an antiCastro lobby involving American
presidential advisers, senators,
and congressmen. It is a story
packed with twists and turns
worthy of the best spy novels.

A thirteen-year-old boy is
injured at a birthday party. As
an adult, one of his classmates
narrates this episode.
Starting with the motivations
underpinning what reveals itself
to be more than an accident,
and whose consequences are
felt in many aspects of his life
over the following decades (his
troubled adolescence, a change
of city, a marriage in crisis),
he takes a courageous look at
identity, relationships and loss.
This examination also probes the
lives of his father, with whom he
has a difficult relationship, and
his grandfather, an Auschwitz
survivor who spent years writing
a bizarre, secret diary.
The narrator of this novel –
whether dead or ghost we do
not know – has to keep a record
of deaths, recounting the tense
passing of the deceased, in order to
reacquire human form. However, as
his work nears its end, he stumbles
upon the unexpected: a family in
a small town that keeps a corpse,
unburied and unmourned, tied to
a chair at the dinner table, going
about their business as if nothing
has happened. While the narrator
is filled with horror, mother and
daughter press ahead with the
latter’s wedding preparations – an
occasion for which nothing is
missing but the groom –, while the
son never comes out of his room.
Buying cheap to sell at a profit
can be an addictive mental process.
A shop owner takes it to an extreme,
subjecting his clientele to the most
cynical materialism. Engaged to
be married, he breaks up with his
fiancée and falls for a waitress’s
backside. As he reads detective
novels, his mind starts to gallop
at breakneck speed. Meanwhile, a
plumbing problem in the back of his
shop poses the question: does the
bad smell come from the drain or
from himself?
Mutarelli explores some of his
favorite themes, such as progressive
dehumanization, absurd and cruelty,
with the skillful use of language
developed in his career in comics.
It was turned into a film directed by
Heitor Dhalia in 2007.

Serginho is a simple person
with no great aspirations, living
a routine of beers, gossip and
girls until one of these girls gets
pregnant. Her father, armed with
a pellet gun, forces Serginho to
marry her. When his marriage
and his job go down the drain,
he clumps together the last of
the inheritance left to him by
his mother and starts planning a
trip to Portugal, where he’s been
told there are bags of money to
be made for those not afraid of
some hard graft. And what else
might be waiting for him there?
True love, perhaps? He will find
the answer amid the letdowns,
hardships, humiliations, and
insults so familiar to penniless
immigrants.
Self-exiled on a remote island,
Érika records messages for Alex
through which she attempts to
come to terms with her past. We
quickly learn that she and Alex
were artists, and for years they
were involved in aesthetic and
existential experiments, including
works produced together and an
unusual love triangle with their
friend Karen.
The narrator allows herself
an exercise in retrospection,
combining memory, imagination,
and implacable critical thinking.
With her elusive fragmented style,
Carola Saavedra borrows from
the traditions of cinema, radio,
and theatre to examine the limits
between art and life, aesthetics
and human emotion.
In the first short story of The Book
of Prague, The Pianist, Antônio
Fernandes has just arrived in Prague,
where he spots an ad for an Andy
Warhol exhibit called “Disaster Relics”
at the Museum Kampa. Among
images of car crashes and portraits
of famous figures, Fernandes hears
the sound of a piano. As he sets
off to hunt down the source of
the music, the everyday order of
things breaks apart and one bizarre
episode follows another, story
after story. The exhibit’s disasters
somehow seem to merge with the
protagonist’s personal experience, as
desire drives him ineluctably to loss,
depersonalization, and death.
The wordless black and white
strips of Rafael Sica portray
life in the city with doses of
solitude, sadness, fear and
horror, tempered by an acidic
sense of humor and a touch of
surrealism. Sica is considered one
of the most influential graphic
artists of the new generation in
Brazil and his comic strips have
been published in some of the
country’s premier publications. In
the very private and recognizable
universe he created, Sica plumbs
urban life and contemporary
human behavior in a tragicomic
manner.
For a taste of his work, visit
the website www.rafaelsica.zip.
net. Ordinary strips are being
published since 2009.
The similarities between the twin
brothers William and Wilson are
merely physical. The first is violent,
taciturn and masculine, while the
second is a woman trapped in a
man’s body.
After a tragedy that separates
them, a surprising plot involving sex
change, murder, and memory loss
takes the narrative to the enigmatic
city of Cairo. Incited by a postcard
sent by his missing brother, William
goes to look for him and attempt to
solve the mystery of his whereabouts
and identity.
With a style that is at once comic
and violent, poetic and rude, the
author gradually reveals a story of
brotherly love struggling to resist the
insistent threat of death.

The book is a real tour through
the Amazon Rainforest. A ride
fraught with significant discoveries
and learning, students and
educators can reflect on the
appreciation of the environment,
and at the same time learn about
the customs and values that reside
in the magical world of the forest.
The text was rescued from the
tale of One Thousand and One
Nights, and tells the story of the
rich and greedy Abu Kasem.
The character is an ambitious
merchant who, despite the large
accumulation of wealth, dressed
so miserable for their condition,
drawing attention mainly because
of an old pair of slippers (known
as “babuchas”) that always
accompanied him wherever he
was. Throughout the story, Abu
gets into embarrassing situations
involving his old slippers, and
realizes that they are the picture of
all her avarice, greed and ambition.
This book is an invitation to a journey
through the enchanted universe of
popular demonstrations, which we
call folklore. Demonstrations that
have survived for several generations,
by popular practices, and that it is
necessary to redeem them, show
them to new generations, for them to
perpetuate those customs that reflect
the identity of the Brazilian people.
In this story, the reader, rather
than a mere spectator, will feel
participant in the book and will
understand his/her important
place as a character in the world
we live. With the help of many
colors and sounds, the imagination
is awakened and the reader/
character can travel the world to
start a reflection on his origin, and,
in the end, find himself as the main
character of the work.
It addresses, in poetic prose, the
universe of culture and heritage of
African peoples in Brazil. It walks
through the history of slavery,
focusing on resistance and delay
in the post-abolition period. In
parallel, the “DNA” of black culture
is highlighted in the mixing process
with European and indigenous
people: carnival, samba, congas,
maracatu, capoeira, cooking,
religion, and syncretism.
The poetics of the book leads
us to reflect on the importance of
diversity and respect for differences.

The legends survive thanks
to the oral tradition and they
carry imaginary and historical
traces along with them. They
reveal the cultural richness of
a people. This book consists of
three stories, which due to their
beauty, delicacy, and truth seem
to be weaved in silk: they are soft
in their narrative and beautiful
and strong in the messages they
communicate to the readers.
It was by admiring nature and its
changes day by day that Leonardo
trained himself as an attentive
observer. Since his childhood, with
his particular organization, he
kept beautiful things and different
pieces of information, so that he
would be able to use them when
he needed. This book was born
exactly in the same way, starting
in the small town of Vinci, in the
search for Leonardo’s places.

Giros are short popular tales

Brazil, but they keep their original
characteristics: they are humorous
stories with a harmonious rhythm,
and very easy to learn by heart.

Did you know that soccer was
born in China and it was then used
for military training? Or that the
ancient American inhabitants, such
as the Mayas and the Aztecs, played
a soccer game in which they bet
their lives? We invite you to know
the history of soccer, a sport that is
nowadays played all over the world.
All children have rights and one
of them is the right to read; read
the clouds, the people, the places,
the things. And read books, these
small objects that can open
people’s mind for life, for other
people, and for himself. And for
many possibilities of reading and
changing the world. It is a book
about the importance of reading
as a fundamental right.
Catch the lice, pop the popcorn,
and rolled wrapped duck are
some of the funny parlendas
(five-syllable verses recited
to entertain and calm down
children) and tongue twisters,
which, united by the rhythm
and rhymes in these colorful
poems, stimulate the imagination
and remind us of the taste and
memories of our childhood.
This book is a landmark of the
living presence of Paulo Freire in
relation to the challenge, strong
will and passion regarding the
rights of teaching how to write
and read, which were announced
to the whole world as the
importance of the act of reading.
The book shows the way he
faced the matters of reading and
writing under the point of view
of a political fight with a scientific
comprehension of such matters.
The aim of this book is to analyze
the Knowledge inside the Schools
under the point of view of some
political and epistemological
principles (such as production and
appropriation of the Culture), so as
to subside the educators in their
reflection about the concrete social
sense of what they do.
The fundamental thesis is that
the Knowledge is a cultural
construction (therefore a social
and historical construction)
and the School (as the vehicle
which transmits it) has a political
commitment of an innovative and
conservative character, which is
also expressed through the way this
knowledge is understood, selected,
transmitted, and recreated.

The understanding of Africa is an
extremely critical exercise. One of
the stated targets of Memoirs of
Africa points at the discovery of
realities that are hidden by myths,
fiction and imaginary images.
This book chronicles a series of
manifestations which claims the
cultural and social rescue of the
contributions originated in Africa.
Having an interdisciplinary focus,
the text is committed to the latest
pedagogical positions related to
the act of teaching, a scenery in
which the school has been rising
in a privileged way.
This book reveals the Social
Statute patterns determined
by the inter-relations between
the fiscal budget and the social
welfare budget according
to the public funds in Brazil.
The characteristics of the
social welfare financings are
investigated under the point
of view of the evaluation of
resources, the great amount of
expenses and the nature of the
financing sources, which turns
problematic the relationship
between the welfare budget and
the options of economical and
social policies adopted.
This book discusses the Mental
Health Related to Work in the
Social Sciences and Health
areas, explaining its directions
and contribution to this
multidisciplinary field. Having
the dominated work as its
conducting line, the book shows
clearly the processes of stress,
suffering and sickening of the
workers in a contemporary world
that is marked by social fragility,
demonstrating the need of a
contextualized clinic. It provides
details of psychic disorders –
problems such as post-traumatic
stress, depression, alcoholism, the
abuse of psychotropic and illegal
drugs, or burnout syndrome.
In this book, the activities related
to reference and the strategies
of text progression are examined
with special emphasis, as well as
the deductive processes involved
in different kinds of anaphora;
the resources of progression, of
thematic maintenance progression,
of progression and topic continuity,
as well as the functioning of textual
articulation.
This book tells stories about
different ways of working with
children in day care centers and
preschools through practical
experiences led by researchers
from the University of São Paulo
(USP). Well-informed stories
that help both parents and
professionals reflect about their
own way of working with children
and approaching subjects such
as fears, food, hygiene, sleep,
didactic materials, toys, the arrival
of a child with special needs,
the organization of time and
space, the process of learning
and its challenges, the limits,
the discipline, and the multiple
languages used by the children,
their families and their educators.

João Antônio (1937-1996) left
behind a body of work that stands
out for its masterly ability to
blend street dialogue with literary
writing. He portrayed prostitutes,
pimps, and scoundrels, lending
the depths of philosophy and
literary theory to the marginalised
individuals who inhabit the
peripheries of the big cities.
His first book, Malagueta, Perus
e Bacanaço [Chilli, Perus and
Hipster], won two of Brazil’s most
prestigious literary award – the
Jabuti Prize – and was translated
into eight languages. In addition
to being a prolific journalist, he
published another twenty works,
among them Leão de Chácara
[Bouncer] (1975), Ô Copacabana
[Oh! Copacabana] (1978),
Dedo-duro [Tell-tale] (1981),
all re-edited by Cosac Naify.
“João Antônio uses the dregs
of society to create beauty and
poetry, because this is a writer
who, in addition to his talent,
brings experience, love and
passion for the characters who
populate his admirable books.”

Lampião & Lancelot by Fernando
Vilela is a visual and poetic adventure
joining two cultures: the famous
outlaw Lampião from the backlands
of Northeast Brazil meets a medieval
knight of King Arthur´s Round Table.
Tchibum is an image-book
conceived by the Olimpic Champion
swimmer Gustavo Borges and
illustrated by Daniel Kondo; it teaches
toddlers how to make their first strokes
in the pool: from the initial splash to
the comfort of their parents´ arms at
the end of the activity.
Mil-folhas [Puff-Pastry] is a literary
and historical journey through the
history of candy and baking. The
author Lucrecia Zappi tells us about
the invention of gum, the Arabian
al-fahua and the importance of sugar
as a commodity at Medieval Times.
In the short story A janela de
esquina do meu primo [My
Cousin´s Corner Window],
illustrated by Daniel Bueno, E.T.A.
Hoffmann narrates the story of
two cousins that observe the
movement in a public square in
Berlin, from the corner window of
an apartment.
The first book by one of the
greatest exponents of Brazilian
literature published by Cosac Naify
is anything but ordinary. Vermelho
amargo [Bitter Red] places
Bartolomeu Campos definitively
among the ranks of writers that
transcend classification. The first
person narrative revisits a painful
childhood marked by the absence
of a mother, who is replaced
by an indifferent stepmother.
The children – born to a father
who cannot quit drinking and
a stepmother who serves thinly
sliced tomatoes at mealtimes –
develop a series of anomalies to
overcome their lack of affection:
the son eats glass; the daughter
cross stitches obsessively.
The memory-laden prose
suits this semi-autobiographical
account; after all, “to forget is to
nonexistence, as if things had
never happened”. In the words
of theatre director Gabriel Villela,
who writes the back cover text,
this is a work that is “delicate…
like barbed wire”.
Eduardo Viveiros de Castro
is Brazil’s most internationally
renowned anthropologist. With his
research based on the Amazonian
Araweté indigenous tribe, he
developed the theory of Amerindian
“perspectivism” that has had a
growing influence on British, French,
and American anthropology and
placed him at the forefront of
his field. This book is a collection
containing his nine fundamental
essays, including the classic
Perspectivismo e multiculturalismo
na América indígena [Perspectivism
and Multiculturalism in Indigenous
America], published in English,
Spanish and French. A Professor at
Rio de Janeiro National Museum,
Viveiros de Castro combines his
writing with a full schedule of
lectures and courses in a variety of
universities all over the world.
“Viveiros de Castro is the founder
of a new school in anthropology.
I feel in complete intellectual
harmony with him.”
Claude Lévi-Strauss
This volume consolidates
unprecedented research on
Brazilian graphic design –
approximately 4,000 works were
analysed for the final selection
of 1,750 images. These examples
make up a panorama of Brazilian
graphic design from the beginning
of the 19th century to the close
of the 20th century. A significant
proportion of the images originate
from poorly conserved sources,
so this book is a priceless
contribution to a registry of
Brazilian culture and design. The
edition also includes a foreword by
Steven Heller, editor of the Visuals
comlumn for the New York Times
Book Review.
Chico Homem de Melo is an
architect, designer, and professor.
He was awarded a Jabuti Prize
for his book O design gráfico
brasileiro: anos 60 [Brazilian
Graphic Design: the 1960s], also
published by Cosac Naify. Elaine
Ramos is Cosac Naify’s art director.

Pedrita (Stony) collects all
kinds of stones, and loves
them as much as she loves her
pets. This book talks about her
relationship with her stones, her
friends, her boyfriend, and her
annoying brother, until she finds
a charmed stone.
Between the lines of a simple
and funny story, the text
enchants people of all ages
with its rhythm and mastery
of the language. The book is
full of turnarounds, traps, and
unexpected moments, narrated
throughout in a fast and sharp
language.
Everybody has a little bit of an
artist inside themselves. This
boy has a bit and a lot more…
He just cannot stand still. Moved
by creative winds, his mind is
constantly in the middle of a
dizzying whirlpool. By being like
that, he has given life to a number
of apparently useless things. Will
this continue once he grows up?
Guto’s images reaffirm art as
an unlimited enigma because it
often appears to lack purpose,
and it responds to the current
flow of utilitarian and comforting
messages with uncertainty,
indeterminacy and, above all, with
humor that corrodes everything.
Teachers and students achieve
their aims when, together, they take
part in the process of knowledge
construction as observers and
apprentices. This book presents a
simple and involving experience in
creating improvements to writing
through the constant practice of text
revision. When the students adopt
this habit, they reflect upon the act
of writing and reach autonomy to
elaborate on their texts. This work
reveals effective changes that may
occur in the classroom as a result of
a specific approach, with significant
and rewarding outcomes.
An ancient legend says that a
young Indian was crying because
of the death of his father and
he was comforted by Yara, the
guardian of the Waters. From
that day on, the forest has never
been the same. The little Indian
learned that our sadness is
temporary. He felt consoled and
happy for noticing that, even in
sad moments, the winds and the
water kept playing with the trees
he liked so much.

Born in a quiet little town,
with rivers and mountains, the
protagonist of this simple narrative
is a boy who learned early to
watch and respect all little Nature’s
beings, as ants and birds, in their
daily work. Later, he started to
contemplate the clouds of the sky,
carried by the wind, realizing that
they could make his child’s pure
dreams come true.
Continuing with his findings,
still based on a close observation
of the world, the boy realizes
that many dreams depend on a
thing called “money”’… And, that
for some dreams, we need more
money than for other ones.
Second book of the series
initiated by The Boy and the
Money, this title brings the same
character – the Boy – dealing
now with unusual gifts received
from his mother: three piggy
banks.
The boy starts to put his coins
in the piggy bank, until a big
surprise occurs: the safe is so full
that it “bursts”, spreading the coins
through the air. Then, he can
buy the official ball he wanted so
much. Thereafter, the boy strives
to save more and more, filling the
other piggy bank. And when this
one also bursts, it’s time to make
another dream come true.
In Financial Therapy, Reinaldo
Domingos presents the
methodology he has developed,
based in his personal experience,
to help people to deal with their
finances in a healthy way, in order
to achieve balance, financial
independence and to enable their
own dreams.
Based on the statement that past
generations didn’t learn to deal
consciously with money, decided
to synthesize in a book the
result of years of observation of
human behavior, associated with
daily practices and concepts he
developed over time, responsible
for taking him to conquer his
financial independency before he
was 40 years old.
In Get rid of debts, the financial
therapist Reinaldo Domingos
discusses a polemic: debt.
Comparing debt to an enourmous
iceberg that grows little by
little in silence, he shows that,
a lot of times, we only notice
this problem when it acquired
a frightening dimension,
compromising financial balance
and the achievement of dreams.
To tackle debts and recover
financial sustainability, the author
suggests a real transformation of
habits and behavior. Money has
to be seen as a means and not
an end. Beyond that, the cause of
debt must be tackled and not only
its effects.
Determined, dreamer, curious
for life: this is the Boy of this
narrative. The story brings, in
a light and compelling way,
important learning about man’s
relation with money and his own
dreams. Born in a humble family,
this boy learns early to value the
coins he earns, keeping them in
a little safe to, one day, buy the
toy he wishes.
Meanwhile, he listens to the
wise and simple words of his
mother, about making choices,
being patient and having
confidence. The boy quickly
learns about the importance of
saving part of his earnings to
make his dreams possible in the
future.

Diverse and big, the indigenous
Brazil is far beyond the tupi
culture. There are 234 peoples
leaving from north to south of
the country, speakers of more
than 180 different languages;
without mentioning the
groups that still are isolated.
This fascinate world reveals
itself in the variety of styles
and techniques of corporal
panting, types of ceremonies
and festivals, a number of
artifacts, ways of relating with
the nature. This is what this ABC
wants to show. It introduces the
reader to the essential aspects
of the indigenous ways of life,
giving him an idea of the ethnic
diversity which is worth to know
and to preserve.
A combination of text and
illustrations by talented authors
and artists, each title of this
collection shows distinct aspects
of a region organized in terms
from A to Z.
Without knowing how to start a
story, the narrator draws a circle
in the middle of a sheet. And he
begins to wonder if a story might
begin from that simple drawing.
Suddenly a rabbit in a hurry jump
out from that circle and disappears
into the next page. Then, an
afflicted girl, a hatter, some
soldiers, a king and a queen do
the same thing. And also appears
a striped cat, smiling and cunning.
They are the characters from Alice
in Wonderland, by Lewis Carrol,
that invade the pages and assume
the script, leaving to the author the
task to conceive the scenario for
them.
Known as a valuable instrument
to form readers, this collection
promotes a dialogue between text
and image, opening multiplied
interpretive paths where image
and text not always say the same.
Nenenzinha, 13 years old, is a
wisp that becomes a giant when
wants something. Then, she
does not hesitate in leaving her
parents’ house to take care of
her orphan nieces and nephews
who suffer under the cruelty
of aunt Delminda. The girl,
however, controlling with love the
secrets of this family will protect
everybody to defend their dreams
and memory.
Barco a Vapor is a collection
with 95 titles full of adventures,
suspense, science fiction, stories
to laugh and cry. It contemplates
a variety of genres, themes and
narrative styles, grouping texts
written and illustrated by authors
of different nationalities.
In this title, Laura and his brother
Carlinhos, wish to have their own
pets as the horse and the cow
belong to dad; the donkey and
the goat belong to grandpa; the
chickens and other birds were
taken by mom and grandma.
The cats, well, they belong to the
house… So Laura and Carlinhos
explode in happiness when dad
gives a dog to each of them.
Everything goes well until the
eggs begin to disappear. Who
would that be? The boys of
around the farm? A skunk? The
brothers start an investigation.
Soon they find an unpleasant
surprise.
Stories that smell of bushes, dust
floors and fresh coffee, crackles
and barks, told and illustrated by
Lúcia Hiratsuka, a country person
with an oriental touch. In this
collection she is inspired by her
childhood memories in a farm.
Master Cat, eximious capoeira
player, ventures himself in the
world with its berimbau. He takes
a path never railed before inside
the wild and bumps into a nice
clearing, good to play capoeira.
He makes, then, her permanent
house inside a Pau-Pereira tree
and hangs on it a chart where
it can be read: capoeira classes.
Very soon, the curious animals
come. Master Cat invites them
to play but they are afraid of the
huge Onça who is around. And if
they are distractingly playing and
the beast takes the opportunity to
mouth them all? Master Cat calms
the animals down: capoeira is a
provoking game, no Onça can
face it, he says. To their surprise,
Godmother Onça shows up
eventually asking for capoeira
classes. And now? This collection
brings to the reader narratives,
myths and folklore recollected
from the oral tradition and written
culture of many peoples and
ethnic groups.

Suddenly one night, a girl fond
of stories and stars finds the sky
naked. Who would be responsible
for such a thing? The giant ogre,
perhaps; he is the only one
capable of reaching the Moon.
And isn’t that true that when the
little girl gets into his cave all the
stars were there? Like a brave, she
then commands that he returns
them all. The problem is that the
ogre is scared of the dark. Having
compassion, the girl finds a way
of calming her friend inhabiting of
stories his interior sky.

In Três Saudades, hunger is
inexistent. Everyone there feeds on
seeds and flower of the House of
Grain, whose pots hold mysteries.
In them, dreamer Rosa finds crystal
beads and makes a necklace with
them and is being persecuted
because of it. At the same time,
the place is modernized: it receives
a train station, telephones, radio
and movie house. The question
is whether or not progress will
make the city and its inhabitants
happier. The titles of this collection
group awarded plays of national
and foreigner authors. They are
accompanied by annexes with
information and notes that aim
the identification and use of the
theater language elements (scenic
space, character, conflict, action
progress).
Salvador, Bahia. In this title,
Léo, Ana Clara and Didi are
impressed with the colors
and festive climate of the city.
Suddenly, Didi disappears without
a trace. While Leo and Ana Clara
consider what to do, a duet
of guitar players sing verses
that sound like an evil omen:
they speak of a woman buried
alive. Idealized by writer Toni
Brandão, the Brasil de Arrepiar
collection explores Brazilian folk
stories and culture by means of
fun fictional and dynamic texts.
Protagonized by cousins Léo
and Ana Clara, accompanied by
uncle Didi, the adventures always
have a mysterious backdrop and
suspense and occur in a scenario
of travels they make around the
country. Regional geography,
history, music, dance, literature
and culinary appear side by side
with fiction, in explanatory notes
on the margins of the pages,
accompanied by photos or
drawings.
Eating sausage with molasses.
Going to a party full of heroes.
Dancing at night in São Paulo.
Visiting Haiti. Watching the rain
on the crop. Playing “fubeca”.
Here, among Haiku, sonnets
and other poetic forms, Fabiano
Calixto reveals how the earth
needs water, the body needs food,
and the imagination, poetry –
food that opens one’s eyes and
makes us taste the world in a new
manner. Books that light children
and young’s attention against the
ties of the language, feeding them
with enouncement assets that
renew the discourse’s vicious air.
The subversive potential of poetic
text is accomplished in series of
classic and contemporary authors,
of diverse times and nationalities,
with illustrated annexes that gives
the context to the work and open
paths to its comprehension and
pleasure.
Fabricio, a 7 years old boy, is on
vacation with grandfather while
his parents try reconciliation after
many fights. During the grandson
visit, grandpa tells the story of
Votupira, a terrible creature fast
as jaguar , deceivable as a snake,
worst than a ghost. Like a brat,
Votupira plays hide-and-seek,
scares the children, but also
creates the eco, makes soap
bubbles, fond the cyclist faces
and, with love, is everywhere.
Known as a valuable instrument

interpretive paths where image
and text not always say the same.

Rife with scandal, huts, monkeys
and scams, this novel shows a
well-spiced Brazil ravaged by
corruption and crime in the arms
of a luxury prostitute with select
customers. Magali, a prostitute, a
pilgrim of the vastness of a lewd
and decadent hypocritical society
where the inversion of values,
sexism, against all moral sense, the
exaggerated worship of money
and political corruption, dominate
the scene and undermines the
health of the country. Charged
with humor, craftiness, and
even moderate irony, the author
untangles the rotten underground
of socio-political Brazil.
This book can only be understood
by those, within a technicalscientific world, who are able to read
the message of the world, interpret
life, and seek happiness. The union
between the emotions of these
stories presented in the language
of academic research increases
the possibility of a school of quality
becoming also a school of joy.
The phenomenon of reification,
currently applied to water, as has
occurred in Brazil, back in 1850
when the Land Act, No. 605/1850,
promoted the reification of rural
property, declaring public all land
and, to allow the possibility of
legitimizing possession, adopted
the principle of privatization
of public land, and even lands
without titles.

through the mediation of Mary,

prayer the Holy Father grants a
plenary indulgence. Liturgy of
the Hours of the Catholic Church

events in the life of Jesus.
In recounting the love-story of Josy
and Alonso, the author of A life among
us makes an important contribution
though breaking social taboos
that have dragged on for several
generations. It charms us in the way
the union between two persons of the
same sex is treated so respectfully and
absolutely natural.

It is with this understanding
that we intend to unravel the
mechanisms characteristic of
peasants´ struggle in northern

into consideration that it is within
the context of government
economic policies that provokes
large migratory flows throughout

between capitalist and precapitalist forms of production.
These clashes involves political
actors of institutions as the
Catholic Church, the government

Kant understands rights in the same
way as morality, that is, a priori and
not empirical. As a science, it is the
doctrine of justice, and the question
of whether what the laws prescribe
a law is fair or not, or what universal
criterion of justice depends, according
to Kant, the temporary abandonment
of empirical principles and the pursuit
of pure reason, which should serve as
a foundation for all possible empirical
laws legislation. Thus, his doctrine
on rights, in that it seeks to justify the
legal institutions from a priori rational
principles, approaches or originates
from postulates of pure practical
reason.

Little Nose’s Pranks, by Monteiro
Lobato, Brazil’s greatest children’s
writer, is a literary classic. First
launched in 1931, this book
remains as contemporary
as ever. With previously
unpublished illustrations, this
new edition brings back the
Yellow Woodpecker Ranch’s
gang. In its first adventures,
we are introduced to Emília, a
knowledgeable and chatty rag
doll, to Aunt Nastácia, famous
for her delicious cakes, to Dona
Benta, a very special grandma, and
to her granddaughter Lúcia, the
girl with the upturned nose. It’s
Narizinho (Little Nose) who guides
us through incredible journeys in a
world of fantasy.
After a season of laziness in
the Yellow Woodpecker Ranch,
Pedrinho, Narizinho and Emília are
ready for yet another adventure.
From the balcony of the house
they gaze at the starry night,
while listening to Dona Benta’s
explanations on the mysteries of
the cosmos. So fascinated they get
with the stories of the planetary
system that they decide to embark
to the outer space. Transported by
some pixie dust, they begin a long
journey across the sky. Always up
to mischief, they meet aliens and
go to places that even astronauts
do not know.
In this book, first released in
1921, Dona Benta’s grandson
spends his holidays in his favorite
place. The Yellow Woodpecker
Ranch has a spacious house,
complete with windows facing
the garden. In the back lies an
orchard full of fruit-laden trees,
where birds build nests of sticks
or clay. There are butterflies, fish
swimming in a stream and talking
animals. A curious boy like
Pedrinho could spend a lifetime
in a place like this. But this time
he wants to find out everything
about the Saci, a one-legged
fantastic creature, and embarks
on a breathtaking adventure.
Since her birth by the capable
hands of Aunt Nastácia, Emília
has never paused for a single
minute. The doll met the world
of fables and fairy tales, traveled
into space and was in the wildest
corners of the universe. Now in
this book, with the help of the
Viscount of Corncob and lots
of imagination, she decides to
recount the incredible adventures
she has been through with the
Yellow Woodpecker Ranch’s gang.
Half unwillingly, the Viscount
records the tale of the little angel
with a broken wing, the arrival of
English children to get to know
the heavenly creature, Popeye’s
struggle against the terrible
Captain Hook, a visit by Peter Pan
and much more.
Jaguars, deer, ocelots, armadillos,
hawks, armored beetles and even a
rhino escaped from a circus wander
around the pages of this book by
Monteiro Lobato, first launched in
1933. In this story, Pedrinho leads
the hunting of an ocelot that lurks
in the bamboo woods near the
Yellow Woodpecker Ranch. As the
head of the expedition formed by
Narizinho, Emília, the pig Tailless
and the Viscount of Corncob, he
follows the footprints of the beast
and, with courage and a bit of fear,
causes a massive mess among the
wild animals.

Much to the delight of Pedrinho,
Narizinho, the Viscount of
Corncob and Emília, dwellers
from fairy tales and adventure
books decide to move to the
Yellow Woodpecker Ranch. After
an exchange of letters with Tom
Thumb, they begin preparations to
receive the famous visitors. Those
include Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs, Aladdin and the geniuses
of the Thousand and One Nights,
Cinderella, Peter Pan and the Lost
Boys of Neverland. Don Quixote
with Sancho Panza and the heroes
of Greek mythology will eventually
appear, as well as fabulists Aesop
and La Fontaine themselves, who
mingle with the great army of
enchanted beings from fairy tales.
For Emília, the world is nothing
but a big ‘mess’. Everything is
wrong. Why does Tailless have a
diminutive snail-shaped tail, and
why does rhinoceros Quindim
have such a thick skin? And how
to explain jabuticaba, a tiny little
Brazilian berry in a giant tree?!
Thinking about it all, Emília uses
the absence of Dona Benta, who
has traveled to Europe with the
Ranch’s gang, to reform nature.
From then on, no one can stop
the rag doll. Along with a friend
who comes from Rio de Janeiro
especially for this adventure, she
puts into practice many of her
wildest ideas.
This book was released in 1942,
when German submarines sank
Brazilian merchant ships and
Brazil entered the Second World
War alongside Britain, France,
Russia and the United States. In
The Key of the Size, Monteiro
Lobato launches a harsh criticism
against rulers who would destroy
entire cities, killing thousands of
people in Europe. It presents the
theme of war, an issue adults of
that time did not usually discuss
with children. In a story full of
danger and suspense, Emília leads
the gang in an attempt to survive
in a radically changed world.
This book features many of the
fables by Aesop and La Fontaine
retold by Monteiro Lobato,
narrated by Dona Benta and
illustrated by Alcy Linares. Sheep
united against a fox, a donkey
who pretends to be a judge, and
a monkey who outsmarts a cat –
these and other animals inhabit
the pages of this book. The fables
are accompanied by questions and
intelligent criticism by the Yellow
Woodpecker Ranch’s gang, and
Emília’s curious comments.
In this book you will find the
fascinating story of Peter Pan as
told by Dona Benta and illustrated
by Fabiana Salomão. Peter Pan,
Tinker Bell, Wendy, Captain Hook,
crocodiles, mermaids and pirates
are part of the adventures featured
in this book. While Dona Benta tells
the Ranch’s gang the tale of the boy
who did not want to grow, Aunt
Nastácia’s shadow starts to vanish.
Who could be responsible for such
a mischief?

First launched in 1937, this
book features 43 folk stories
as told by Aunt Nastácia, the
cook who satiates the hunger
of the Ranch’s inhabitants and
feeds the imagination of them
all. Who did invent the tales of
Hansel and Gretel, the hungry
fox, the naïve peasant or the ant
and the snow? They are all part
of Brazilian folklore. Those are
stories, anecdotes, superstitions
and sayings that people repeat
generation after generation, and
are passed from parents to their
children. They receive small
changes here and there until
they are collected by writers and
included in books like this, written
by Monteiro Lobato.
On those adventure- and
danger-filled pages we find the
Yellow Woodpecker Ranch’s gang
on a journey through time. Hiding
from grandma, Pedrinho, Emília
and the Viscount of Corncob fly
back to ancient Greece to help
Hercules in his fight against a
fierce lion, centaurs, a nineheaded dog-bodied serpent and
other mythological animals. Along
this fantastic journey you will
discover how Pedrinho, Emília
and the Viscount help the hero to
defeat the evil forces and fulfill his
twelve tasks.
Hans Staden, a real-life German,
lived dangerous adventures in
Brazil. Emília, Narizinho and
the whole Yellow Woodpecker
Ranch’s gang become fascinated
by every detail of his story. This
book by Monteiro Lobato, first
launched in 1927, was based on
Staden’s memories in his book
Two Journeys to Brazil (1557).
Lobato’s version has Dona Benta
recounting the saga of this
traveler who was almost eaten by
natives. This happened to Hans
Staden during the era of the great
sea voyages, around 1550. In this
book you will know how Hans
Staden was captured by cannibals,
who would roast and eat the flesh
of their war enemies.
Launched in October 1939, this
book is a sequel for The Yellow
Woodpecker, from the same year.
To save Aunt Nastácia from a
monster who kidnapped her at
Snow White’s wedding, Narizinho,
Pedrinho, Emília the doll, the
Viscount of Corncob and Dona
Benta make an exciting journey
to Ancient Greece, where they get
close to mythological beings such
as centaurs and fauns, as well as
immortal creatures and demigods
from Olympus.
Who has never heard of Don
Quixote and Sancho Panza,
his faithful squire? Adapted by
Monteiro Lobato, this book features
the adventures of the knight who
traveled the world in search of
justice and glory. The story of the
Spanish nobleman, written by
Miguel de Cervantes more than
four hundred years ago, remains as
exciting as ever. And here, retold by
Dona Benta, it gets even tastier.

In this collection tales of
European origin, African as well
as Brazilian folklore are adapted in
cordel’s literature (typical popular
literature from Northeast Brazil),
by Marion, who puts together,
in a such inventive way and
with good rhyming, texts which
were incorporated, into the
Brazilian popular imagination and
recreates the lightness of writing
by giving them the atmosphere
of the amazing, the fantastic and
extraordinary, supported by the
beautiful illustrations of Marcelo
Pimentel, inspired by the naïf
style. The collection has six leaflets
of “cordel”, a brochure and an
educational board game that
displays, in a scenery, the setting
of the “stories”.
The history of art recorded at
different times and from different
angles texts not only highlighting
the attributes of Apollo, including
physicist, a reference symbol of
beauty and the skill of his twin
sister Artemis with the bow and
arrow, but also the narratives
of major episodes of his great
trajectories and full of accidents.
In this mythic narrative, the
passionate feelings of revenge and
justice, as they were experienced
in Greek mythology, appears in
a fictionalized way but without
losing the sense of myth that
integrates and intertwines them.
It’s a beautiful mythical story about
Greek’s universe that imposes in
this union of episodes experienced
by the twin brothers.
Tequinho is a boy who lives
in a community and is proud
to be a member of a family of
samba players. His family story
is connected to a samba school
in Rio de Janeiro. Since he was
younger, he has lived among
“baianas”, dancers, “mestre-salas”,
“porta-bandeiras”, the old guard
and rhythm players who visit
his great grandmother house to
eat her delicious feijoada. In a
short narrative, this book tells,
to the younger readers, how the
“Community’s samba school” was
created.
A story without text, full of
magic and expressiveness,
narrated by Marcelo Pimentel’s
perspective. A queue with
lots of animals from Brazilian
fauna, that are waiting for the
right moment to receive the
“Brazilianness” (the “Brazilian’s
identity”). And guess who is
the responsible for this feat?
The “Saci”? The “Cuca”? The
“Caipora”? Look, read and
discover through the beautiful
images of this narrative, how the
animals of the native fauna are
with the “face” of Brazil.
Biographies, success,
incomprehension and worldwide
recognition are the most visible
elements of this narrative that
approaches the lives of these two
important scientists: Oswaldo
Cruz and Albert Sabin. Trough
well-constructed and simple
rhymes, this text leads the readers
to get to know those scientists’
studies, their doubts, and the only
thing they were sure about: that
public vaccination was a solution
to eradicate the diseases. Also,
presented in the string The winged
danger, there is an approach and an
alert to everyone about the tropical
fever, a disease that happens
frequently and needs everyone’s
attention and prevention.

action and hallucinating mystery
of the present day which makes
the reader unable to put down
the book. The author researched
the historical archives during
ten years, including trips to the
Vatican Library and followed the
Santiago Way four times, twice
on foot and twice by car.
This children’s book, published
in 1977, has already enchanted
two generations who have, in
its pages, sought comfort not
only in confronting the problem
of death but also the eternal
question: “What is life for?” A
eight-year-old child tells of his
reaction to his mother’s death.
The book is recommended by
the F.A.E., (Students’ Support
Foundation) and as such has
been adopted in numerous junior
schools throughout the country as
supplementary reading material.
Reprinted repeatedly since it
was first published in 1981, this
book has already become a
classic of modern literature for
young people. It is recommended
by the F.A.E., (Students’ Support
Foundation), as supplementary
reading material and, as such, is
used in senior schools throughout
the country. A boy twelve-yearold tells of the adventures of
his father, an idealist dreamer in
the Brazil of the 60’s and of the
consequences of the 1964 coup
d’ État on his family. In poetic
language evoking the Bible,
Emediato, in a brief number of
pages, paints a sensitive picture of
the human search for happiness
and justice on earth.
Adriana is a sad girl who keeps
a most secretive secret. She is
lucky, though, that her friend Alice
is very smart. As soon as Alice
gets to know Adriana’s secret, she
gives her a most advisable advice.
Adriana follows the advice, and
her life changes for the better.
Approved by pedagogues, this
controversial and pioneering
children’s book will be the talk of
the town. The author approaches
gently, but seriously, the delicate
subject of child abuse. The book
is specially made for childhood
education at public and private
schools.
Similar to The Kite Runner, this
is the saga of Kurosh — a young
Iranian man persecuted by the
intolerance of his country’s
fundamentalist Islamic rule —
whose memoirs were rendered by
awarded Brazilian author Márcia
Camargos as an epic novel. While
his childhood friend Behruz is
willing to die in the name of Allah,
in order to receive in Paradise
the promised 72 virgins, Kurosh
dreams of freedom, and, like the
albatross, crosses the ocean in
his pursue for it. Conflicts and
passions in an East vs. West
background are combined in this
wonderful tale that moves to tears
and laughter.

“How have you been feeding
your Spirit?”
This is the question that the
author Ozeni Lima, who is
considered a Spirit Personal,
draws attention to the problem
and in a climate of cumplicity
and relaxation, proposes the cut
of the soul calories.
Caloric thoughts are
responsible for the Spirit
diseases and obesity. Through
menus and teachings, the author
gives us safe guidelines so that
we may rescue spirituality and,
then, achieve happiness.
The first book of Spiritual
Cook has finally come out for a
healthy and nutritional feeding.
Feel delight and be happy!
Regina Mazzocato Nacca’s
proposal, in her book Models &
Miniatures, is not exactly to list
unique formulas to make scale
models, because that would not
be possible in practice. In fact,
what Nacca intends is to introduce
and professionalise the techniques
of making basic scale models to
anyone interested in the subject.
The author also seeks to answer
the questions of those who study
or work in the architecture and
decoration area (at the technical or
university level) who find it difficult
to represent their projects. This
book is also aimed at those who
make scale models as a hobby.
“Frightening Stories” is a very
special selection of ten stories
to whom doesn’t have fear of
supernatural, fantastic, terrifying.
The first five, all new, were
written by Regina Drummond;
the other five are of renowned
writers, translated and adapted
by her, but all the stories aimed
at astonishing even the ones
who appreciate feeling butterflies
in the stomach, cold sweat and
scare. The tales are clear, fluent
and attractive, but the end is a
punch in the stomach, and you
can feel hanging in the air, in the
vacuum between terror, fear and
sorrow - sorrow because the story
has finished, of course!
But, take care: if you are fearful,
please, don´t read this book. It´s
not for you.
17th century: Kaori, a beautiful
young lady that exhales the scent
of seduction, trails dangerous
paths amidst samurais, courtesans
and millennia old vampires. On
her path comes José Calixto,
a passionate artist capable
of anything to give life to an
immortal work.
21st century: Samuel Jouza is
a vampire watcher who is about
to find out the hazards of his
peculiar profession are even
greater after meeting Kaori, a
beautiful vampire with a history of
pain and passion.
The magic of ancient Japanese
samurai sagas and a thrilling
adventure set in modern day
Brazil are intertwined in this
vampire novel by Giulia Moon.
Sophia’s world was guided by
two truths: it only would have
a person with whom she could
rely on – herself – the second
one talked about love, the feeling
which caused Verona´s lovers
suicide, the flame that burned
throughout the eternity the hearts
of Tristan and Isolde, and the
insanely reckless passion that
snatched Helen and Paris. All of
this was simply no more than
fantasies.
Happiness in the eyes of Sophia
was to know she could contribute
to a better world. Hear a “thank
you” sounded like a sincere “I love
you.”
But destiny made her review
all these concepts, giving her a
feeling never felt before.

Set against one of the most
dramatic moments in Brazil’s
recent history, when out of the
blue the government confiscated
the money in Brazilians’ savings
accounts by decree in 1990,
Happiness is Easy narrates a day
in the life of Olavo and Mara
Bettencourt from the moment
they receive news of their young
son’s kidnapping in São Paulo.
Award-winning writer Edney
Silvestre has created a riveting
narrative, with a cast of complex
characters whose personal fates
and transformations are directly
affected by these events. This is
the second novel by Silvestre,
who swept up Brazil’s major
literary prizes in 2010 with his
debut novel If I Close My Eyes
Now, for which rights have been
sold to six countries.
The award-winning stage and
screen writer Francisco Azevedo
makes his debut in literature with
a novel about the Portuguese
immigration to Brazil in the 20th
century. Palma‘s Rice narrates the
saga of a Portuguese family in
search of a better future. In the
100 years in which we follow their
lives, siblings fights and make up;
some marry and are happy, while
others separate. Everything is
always accompanied by the rice
thrown on the bride and groom,
José Custódio and Maria Romana,
the family’s patriarchs, at their
wedding in 1908, and gathered
up by the young Palma. The rice
is the main thread of this story,
like crumbs scattered about the
labyrinth of memory.

São Paulo Literature Prize.
With titles translated into
English, French, Spanish, Italian,
Turkish, Arabic, and Romanian,
and awards such as the Casa de
las Américas, Biblioteca Nacional,
and Associação Paulista de
Críticos de Arte prizes, Alberto
Mussa is one of the most creative
writers in Brazil today. In Master
of the left side, he sets crime and
eroticism against a backdrop of
early 20th-century Rio de Janeiro.
In one of the city’s sophisticated
brothels, a crime serves as the
point of departure for a plot that
rummages through Rio’s erotic
mythology. Mussa uses his refined
literature – he was described as
a genius by the French magazine
Télérama – and his knowledge of
Brazilian popular culture to great
effect.
From hyperinflation to prize
freezing, failed plans, the
confiscation of citizens’ savings
accounts by the Fernando Collor
government, and the Real Plan,
Miriam Leitão, one of Brazil’s
most respected economic
journalists, shows how Brazilians
suffered and resisted until the
economy stabilized. In this
fundamental book about Brazil’s
recent history, Miriam provides
a unique panorama of Brazilians’
relationship with their currency
and how it played a fundamental
role in the construction of a
national identity. With human
stories and economic analysis,
this work reveals how efforts
to attain stability helped shape
Brazilian society.
Ronaldo Wrobel takes a look at
the lives of Jewish immigrants in
1930s Brazil in the context of a
love story. Max Kutner is a Polish
Jew who works as a shoe repair
man in Rio de Janeiro. Fluent in
Yiddish, he is called upon to act
as a postal censor, translating the
correspondence of other Jews
into Portuguese. Perturbed by the
dilemmas provoked by the task,
he falls in love with a woman
he has never met, Hannah,
who exchanges letters with her
faraway sister. Having decided
to find her, he takes part in an
unexpected succession of events.
Wrobel examines the folklore of
Jews in the tropics, and recovers
an important part of the history of
the community in the New World.

The architect João Filgueiras
Lima - Lelé, is one of the
most important names of the
modern movement. Though
he was disciple of Niemeyer,
his stile took off thanks to
his own methods and the
characteristics of his work.
He threw himself into the
knowledge of architectural
issues related to industry and
nation development, seeking
cost-effective solutions, without
prejudice to plasticity. The book
shows revolutionary projects,
from the construction of urban
equipments to serial schools,
built in armed mortar, as well as
the public hospitals, for which
the furniture and a ventilation
system were designed to
eliminate the air conditioning
usage.
The book is based on William
Faulkner’s journey to Brazil in
1954 for the International Writers
Congress. Antonio Dutra, a young
historian and writer, researched
to reconstruct the circumstances
of that period and, in a fictional
language, he recovered Faulkner’s
days in the country, with their
myths and truths. Faulkner did
not leave his Jack Daniel’s, in
spite of what he did not stop his
acid and lucid critics of racism
in his country. Surrounded by
intellectuals, he enjoyed the
most populous Brazilian city,
surprised by its cosmopolitanism.
The author builds a picture of
a distracted and introspective,
Faulkner, reluctant to social life.
French sociologist, Roger Bastide
arrived in Brazil in 1938, staying
in the country for 16 years to
research Brazilian related issues.
His studies resulted in essays
published in academic magazines
and journals, both in Brazil and
France, influencing a whole
generation of intellectuals. In this
illustrated collection, issues such
as the presence of Africa; AfricanBrazilian aesthetics; the baroque,
art and religion, sociology and
comparative literature, paintings,
the work of Machado de
Assis, great Brazilian writer are
highlighted. Bastide’s studies, even
nowadays, many decades late,
are essential for knowledge and
understanding of Brazil.
The most impressive
characteristic in these stories
is the way they are narrated. A
compassionate author plays with
evocations and the toughness
of the real and conflicting
world. With a genuine style, he
takes the reader to the heart
of literature, catches him with
a strong power of suggestion.
Monologues, dialogues,
descriptions and reports are
blended in a continuous tissue.
For his concision and rhythm his
tales remind us Cortázar’s, when
the sharpness of reality threats
us as a risk. Melhem owns a
unique language. Milton Hatoum,
acclaimed writer, considers him,
for his storytelling skills, one of
the leading literature writers in
Brazil.
In this book, the photographer
Iatã Cannabrava brings together
images from the periphery
of several Latin American
metropolises, which offers the
reader a different view of an
outcast world at the borders of
the cities. But they don’t serve
as a denunciation to social
exclusion since the images reveal
another urban culture and it
modus vivendi. The author, states
that there is another city right
across the corner. The book is a
collection of photographs several
others cities right across the
corner. The photos are not about
violence or poverty, but a creative,
pulsating life synthesized in work
of precise aesthetics sense.

In the last two decades, scientific
divulgation has been synonymous
of mass communication, what
means simplifying at most,
language and content. However,
it let orphans those with scientific
and mathematical tools to go
beyond. It’s in this gap that the
physicist Ivan S. Oliveira rescues,
with mastery, this kind of reader.
This unique volume starts a new
(and promising) niche in scientific
divulgation. Welcome to physics,
initiated, interested, and fascinated
students of this world.
‘The evolution of physics ideas is
a book which reveals a discussion
about physics advances,
from Greece until nowadays,
emphasizing the historical aspects
and philosophical in which it
occurred. This book analysis the
mutual influences that physics
and philosophy had between it.
Also, it tried to teach the reader
how to test ideas, evaluate
hypothesis and to appreciate the
arguments of a given problem in
its right value. In sum, to show
that in science is more important
to know how to think than the
encyclopedic knowledge.
The Romance of Algebraic
Equations represents something
new in Brazil and it tends to
exert lasting influences over
the methods of mathematical
teaching in our country. No doubt
that it’s a masterpiece that will
be well received by professors,
students and enthusiasts and it
is intended to awake in young
generation vocations until now
unknown for a science that,
unjustifiably, use to be surrounded
in mystery and seen with an
unfunded apprehension.
This book is a smooth
introduction to Quantum Physics
that emphasizes concepts,
interpretations and philosophical
questions of the theory. The book
presents and intuitive language
and less Quantum Mechanics
math. This book may be used for
those that never had a Quantum
Mechanics discipline, as well as
philosophy students, science
teaching, history of science
and many other scientific areas.
Concepts of Quantum Physics was
awarded with 2004 Jabuti award
in Exact Sciences, Technology and
Informatics category
Astronomy constitutes a meeting
point of Physics and Mathematics
with other disciplines. This present
effort offers an actualized vision
of whole astronomy areas, with
special emphasis in Astrophysics,
Cosmology and the developing
Astrobiology. Although the target
audience is students from 7th
and 8th grade and particularly
from high schools, this book can
be useful for science teachers
and anyone that has a minimum
knowledge of this level. The level
of mathematic complexity has
been kept low but without doing
concessions to rigorous exposition.
Auxiliary material has been
included in the seven appendices
of the book. These topics are part
of the compulsory school subjects,
such as the Earth formation and
others were treated and reviewed
from a very general point of view
and integrated into other subjects.

A practical and realistic way to
look at sustainability and all the
transformations that occurred
in the business world in recent
years. The book highlights
transformations in the Brazilian
economy and helps foreigners to
better understand the country’s
potential, which increasingly
stands out among the best
countries to invest. The initial idea
came from the cedar’s metaphor,
a tree that has very specific
characteristics, like gaining width
and strength before actually
growing up with the stability to
stand still for centuries. The cedar
represents the importance and
possibility of combining profits
and the appropriate care of the
planet.
People sometimes say men
are not good in taking care of
children, that they are less caring
and affectionate. Perhaps because
of gender characteristics, cultural
issues or simply because they are
not the ones that give birth. This
book proves that this is all a big
misunderstanding. Yes, men do
have heart, and nowadays they
are more able to show it. With
stories able to bring you to tears,
the author reflects about some
real dilemmas and milestones of
the relationship between father
and sons. The men will be identify
themselves with it, the women
and children will be touched and
grateful. No matter how old or
where they are from, since love
really is one of the most universal
themes.
A contemporary novel set in
São Paulo, where Justiniano, a
man around his forties reflects
about friendship, fidelity and the
choices people make. Narrated
in first person, he investigates his
best friend’s life and family while
trying to understand one of the
love triangles of the book. The
friend, a psychoanalyst, is in a
coma and can’t provide answers to
the questionable acts discovered
by the narrator. At the same time,
Justiniano pursues a married
woman and wonders why he can’t
develop lasting relationships with
women.
The book introduces the
concept of corporate DNA and
reviews the evolution of human
and management thought.
Filled with case studies of global
companies of various sizes, it
helps the reader understand the
risks of the oversimplification
that sometimes occurs already in
meeting rooms, where everything
can be understood and explained,
and moves forward to the market
reality, where companies can
cyclically perish because of not
properly foreseeing changes.
As if the world were really like
the metaphor created by the
scientist Karl Weizsäcker, divided
between elephants and non
elephants. Everything is simple
in a Powerpoint presentation,
but not so simple when it faces
constraints and competition.
The fate decreed that the family
Russev, or Roussef, was marked
by ruptures, difficult economic
times and opposing political
regimes. Petar Russev, the Brazilian
president Dilma’s father Dilma
Roussef, fled Bulgaria due to
controversial reasons and left there
a pregnant wife. In Brazil, he had a
daughter – Dilma – that fought the
military dictatorship and dreamed
about the communist equality. Far
away, in Bulgaria, the abandoned
son, who never met the father
or sister, also made of his life a
fight, but against the authoritary
communist regime. Rousseff is a
book about family, about historical
coincidences and also about
impossible economic and political
regimes.

After the smashing success of
Marise’s Diary - The Real Life of a
Call-Girl, the ex-call-girl Vanessa
de Oliveira now reveals several tips
and tricks of her former profession
and everything she had learned
about men.
Fantasizing and seducing
people is an art that can fill our
lives with joy, enchantment and
unforgettable moments. Imagine
there’s no space or time; there’s
just your imagination and your
desires. Take a vacation from your
everyday life and be whatever,
whoever, and wherever you’d
always wanted to be! You’re
going to find out that fantasizing
doesn’t have to depend on your
physical or financial situation — let
alone your age or marital status!
You’re going to learn how to play
“fantasies” that will enhance your
life and add brighter colors to your
relationships — even if you’d never
heard about fantasizing before!
“Marise” is the street-name of
Vanessa — a devoted mother at
home, and a responsible student
at a Nursing School. In hotels or
roadside motel rooms, however,
Marise acts as a highly praised call
girl. “Marise” speaks uninhibitedly
about her gigs, her clients’
personal wickednesses, pimps,
orgies, swinghouses, and the life
on the streets and nightclubs. At
the same time, Vanessa also talks
about her family life, her friends
and lovers, the frustrations she
went through because of the latter,
and how did she end up in this
sort of lifestyle. All this interspersed
among the almost five thousand
gigs she estimates having done.
A baby has born — and now
what? In this book, the newlyturned mother will find useful tips
and directions — also useful for
the newly-turned father — on how
to behave properly in this new
stage of life; from the immediate
onwards. Learn what to do to keep
on playing the various roles of
a woman, as a mother, a wife, a
lover, and a professional. Valuable
suggestions on exercising,
nutrition, and diet; as well as
about proper emotional care
in the relationships the woman
keeps with her baby, her husband,
and herself.
What defines us as fat persons are
not the things we do occasionally,
but systematically. In this book
you’re going to learn — in a
humored way — that for growing
lean, you’ll have to go into a diet
of the mind, reeducating yourself
and thinning your very soul.
You’ll have to cultivate your soul;
because fat-souled people are
often uncultivated at all! If every
time you go into a diet, you always
come up with excuses like “I get fat
just by smelling food”, or “Maybe
I have some kind of hormonal
disorder”, or “After pregnancy I
never could get in shape again”,
or “I have a tendency to grow fat”;
then, this book is meant for you!

This book was the basis of the
story used in the film “Xuxa in the
Fantastic Mystery of Feiurinha”.
Trudi is a witch and Kiki is not.
However, one day their paths
cross. A little incident at a witchparty leads them to change
mothers, homes, and lives. This
story is a fun comedy of errors
that, fortunately, has a happy
ending.
Raquel is concerned when Nel,
her best friend, suddenly stops
coming to school. She soon
discovers that he’s got AIDS,
that the vírus has manifested its
presence in his body. When word
spreads among the students,
prejudice spreads, too. Raquel,
Marcelo and Joca will be on Nel’s
sideto grant him the right for a
normal living.
Reading nature along its
continuous transition, the boy
falls in love with the bird which
constantly appears at his balcony.
As time goes by, boy and bird
get along well making no use
of words and gestures. And it is
the time the only responsible
for the friends’ connection and
disconnection.
Isabel thinks she is ugly. But
is she really? Or does she only
think that? She writes letters and
verses to help the relationship
of her best friend, Rosana, with
Cristiano, the love of her life.
Because of the letters’ beauty and
truth, Cristiano falls more deeply
in love with Rosana, which only
increases Isabel’s desperation.
This situation gets even worse
with the death of the school
principle, witnessed by the
young Isabel, as a brutal murder,
even though it is an apparent
suicide. From then on, her life is
threatened.
You remember, don’t you?
Almost all the old stories you
read ended by saying that the
heroin married the charming
Prince and that was it! They were
going to live happily ever after
and there was no more to it!
But what does “live happily ever
after” mean? Does it mean get
married, have kids, put on weight,
and get the family together on
Sundays to eat pasta? Does it
mean that happiness means
no more adventures? How can
anyone live happily without any
adventures?

A five-century-old Portuguese
caravel is rescued from a wreck
in Brazilian coast. Inside it, a
mysterious silver box hides a
secret: seven corpses imprisoned,
accused of witchery. Despite
the warnings inscribed on the
silver object, the staff of History
Department of Soares University of
Porto Alegre decides to violate the
box, in order to study the bodies.
After all, what dangers could those
seven corpses represent? None.
But after the first of them awakes...
This new novel by André Vianco,
same author of Seeds on Ice,
drives the reader to an ancient
world, where real murderers bear
sharp fangs and fear sun.
A vampire, awaken after five
hundred years, open his eyes to a
strange land, new and full of blood.
Seventh decides to make Brazil
his new home, and for such he
will have to gather a real army of
vampire to delimitate his territory,
show his power and combat
hunters. He elects a newly-created
vampire (Tiago) to be his guide,
general and pupil.
Thirsty of blood and conquests,
by proclaiming himself the
most powerful creature on
Earth, Seventh attracts, beside
vampires, an unlimited number of
enemies from this and from the
other world. Those enemies will
make extra human effort, using,
apart from guns charged with
silver bullets, pointed teeth and
paranormal powers.
The most bizarre show on Earth
cannot stop.
A night begins like any other
night and becomes part of
humankind history, when half
of human beings fall sleep in
a profound and unexplainable
manner. Treated as epidemic,
the disease triggers an unrivalled
chaos in the world cities. The
nightmare seems not to have
an end when the proportion of
humans free of sleep finds out
they are sharing the night with
darkness demons.
That world, new and dark, is
shown through Lucas’ eyes, a
man who awakes to that appalling
scenario and who will become,
even against his wish, a powerful
and venerated warrior, fighting
against vampires and leading
humans to the encounter of the
four miracles that will free the
Earth from the terrible curse.
Vampire-King Vol. 1 – Bento is
one of the most acclaimed books
of André Vianco’s readers, both
for the vertiginous adventure and
the captivating characters. It is
a certain passage to a world of
fantasy and imagination.
Lúcio, Cantarzo´s slave, bears
his vampire master imprisoned
in a wooden box. His mission
is to take Cantarzo to Tereza,
a witch who lives in northern
Brazil, which will make Cantarzo
awake and become the king
of vampires. With few hints of
the real track of the witch, the
vampire’s lackey begins a journey
that will lead to dreadful results
in the case targets are reached.
In humans’ side, Bento Lucas
makes the blade of hope grow
in his fellows, pushing them
through the trails of the country’s
conquest, by then wasted by
nightly enemies.
Lucas and Cantarzo’s destinies
are on the verge of intersecting
and on the pages of VampireKing Vol. 2 – Witch Tereza, the
reader will find a fantastic world
and will watch the development
of this incomparable saga,
imagined and conducted
by André Vianco, the gifted
storyteller who has been
standing out in the field of
Brazilian fantastic literature.
Bento Lucas, the light warrior,
and Cantarzo, the vampire-king,
eventually meet and they are the
protagonists of a great combat.
Vampire-King Vol. 3 – Cantarzo
is the volume most filled with
adventures, battles and fantastic
creatures of all saga initiated in the
first volume, Vampire-King Vol. 1 –
Bento.
With an involving and current
narrative, the saga of warrior Lucas
is a perfect gift to those who seek
to be in love with reading and also
to those who have been keen on
reading for a long time.
Braveness and determination, fear
and death, devastating passions,
appalling creatures, intrepid
characters, situations of complete
despair and moments of quietness
and introspection: there is a little
of everything, and in the right
amount. It is impossible not to go
to the next page.
André Vianco is not only a certain
good read, but also the sureness
of a delicious and new experience.
Board to Vampire-King and know
this story. Know a new world. Have
a nice trip!

This book shows the evolution of
the kitchen – including a chapter
about food and eating habits
through time – going through
researches, styles, periods, and
contexts; reaching automation
and compaction. It also addresses
ergonomic kitchen designs,
coating, lighting, colours, furniture
and other components. Richly
illustrated.
For the first time in Brazil, a
single book brought together art,
literature, architecture, design
and industrial process. Another
chapter to the collection: A CASA
DE TODOS OS TEMPOS – II
DORMITÓRIO.
This book addresses the history
of furniture and their style: Lois’
France, the Noble houses of
England, etc. The book presents
a study of the architectural
organization of the bedroom,
the evolution and history quotes
from antique stores: bedrooms
plans, their circulation and flow
charts; sensations and the search
for privacy; comfort and warmth;
painting; wallpaper; fabric;
flooring; as well as all the materials
that compose these products. The
book includes charts showing
colour tendencies, harmony and
colours for bedrooms, the needs of
the modern family.
If you are a parent you will
find in this diary things that you
have thought of or done, but
have forgotten. The many events
in the life of your children that
you would have liked to keep in
writing, but that were betrayed by
memory and time gone by. Lucia’s
warm and delicate writing and the
way she rekindles this memory
makes of Cordão Mágico a unique
book, which is very close to our
own life stories.
Do Avesso is a fantasy about
the search for identity. Samadhi
Aipim, the main character, lives in
an inside out world (Do avesso, in
Portuguese). This is not the story
of a hero or of an anti-hero, this
is the story of an almost common
boy, Samadhi, who goes through
a lot of drama (as a synonym for
action). The Young Author uses
unusual metaphors: the Ego Lake,
in which the hero drowns; Mother
Nature, who has bipolar disorder;
the Alchemist, who is responsible
for everyone’s feelings and has
Alzheimer; and the villain, Estagna,
who eliminates anyone who is
not interested in life. Inciting,
fun, and challenging, this books
treats freedom and free will in an
unusual way. For curious youth
and adults.
A story like the ones told in
the past. The Author shows
the relationship between
a grandmother and her
granddaughter, and how people
with different ways of thinking can
live together, addressing mourning
for the loss of an object or a friend.
This children’s book has such a
unique language that it can be
read by adults too. The book has
an attractive look and is richly
illustrated.

An allegory represents this
novel: the change in nationality
of a village. The lack of language
represented by this moment is
present throughout the book. The
characters tell their stories and
relationships, but their interaction
is as poor as their lost language.
The descriptive note of the book
is perfectly adapted for the form
and content. The Author tells the
story of a suffering people, that
without resources experience
wars, deaths, separations, and
sickness, but always keep some
joy and a certain way of facing life,
which mixes the strength to fight
adversities and serene acceptance
of the inevitable.
Suzana Montoro’s children’s
books have been labelled “Highly
Recommended” by Fundação Nacional
do Livro Infantojuvenil (FNLIJ).
Há cores e acordes (There are
Colors and Chords) is a book
of flashes. Eight stories, eight
encounters, many discoveries. You
will be enchanted with each one
of the unforgettable characters,
taken by surprise by small gaps
opened in their everyday lives.
You will be touched by small
epiphanies, instants in which
automatisms are suspended, and
rationality yields to enlightenment.
The poetical prose style, which
marks the stories, absorbs readers
in lyrically sounding drawings. Há
cores e acordes it’s a book to be
read, imagined and felt.
This novel takes place in the long
gone civilization of Atlantis, during
a time of great knowledge and
power. It is a story of the learning
path of the spirit, of love and
choices. Thirteen voices tell the
story of Ilanah and life during the
final days of Atlantis.
Poetry is the most complex of
literary expressions, in which
the Author must go beyond the
meaning of each word, searching
for the right word and one that
touches the reader. It is not
by accident that poetry is also
identified with art itself.
Art is exactly what defines the
work of Inês Monguilhott in
Natural, her first book. Monguilhott
reveals her literary voice in 50
poems, using metaphysical and
immaterial aspects as metaphors
of human nature, taking the
reader through a significant and
captivating work.
Summary: Novel. A rich woman
living between Brazil and France,
who writes children’s books, starts
writing a diary when she meets
a younger man. She tells the
story of her ancestors, exposes
her relationship with her autistic
daughter and lets runs a delicate
and decisive flow in her existential
journey.

This could be one of those
stories where the main character
is around 30 years of age, pretty,
laid-back, has a cool job, and
dreams of a great love who
preferably does not give many
opinions on her life. It could, if
only Amanda did not have an
additional ingredient: she is a
total, complete, hypochondriac.
When Brian enters Amanda’s life,
this situation could very well be
turned around, but he has a dog,
which makes any sort of chance
for romance impossible. After all,
Amanda would rather die alone
than live with the thousands of
germs that inhabit the body of that
“wild” animal...
With masterful writing, this
renowned Brazilian playwright
and author offers us a collection
of sentiment-packed short stories.
The author uses the reality that
surrounds us to introduce his
impressions about the world and,
when speaking of the individual,
deals with collective feeling.
Reality is transformed through
his perspective in short stories
filled with meaning and that
make us think. The daring in his
short stories is due to the brilliant
way he speaks of everyday and
routine subjects, which are treated
superficially.
Celso Sisto offers his readers a
beautiful adaptation of a popular
tale from West Africa. The
Princess’s Wedding is a story full of
symbology and meaning. Abena
is an African princess disputed by
two suitors: Fire and Rain. Both will
need to pass a test of resistance
to win the hand of the King’s
daughter.

No. of pages: 480
This is a fictional biography
about a Portuguese pioneer who
during the first decades of the
18th Century blazed the trail
by land between the southern
states of Brazil, permitting
social, political and economic
integration of the southern
provinces and consolidating
part of Brazil’s territory. Born
in Portugal in 1678, Cristóvão
immigrated to Brazil while still
very young, moving to the city of
Rio de Janeiro.
GOOD BLOOD
Author: Liber Matteucci
Category: Adult fiction
ISBN: 978-85-7927-142-7
Format: 14x21 cm
No. of pages: 336
A robbery in a bus ends badly
and Luiza - young, nine year old
Arthur’s mother - is shot in front
of her son. The victim’s blood soils
the boy’s T-shirt, forming the face
of Jesus Christ. The boy’s uncle
shows the clothes to a journalist
who quickly perceives the potential
of the story and transforms Arthur
into the reincarnation of Christ, the
mother into the Virgin Mary and
the artifact into a relic. After that,
things start to get out of control:
lines form outside the house in
search of Arthur’s blessing. Money,
faith, and politics are the main
targets of the social criticism the
author makes of reality.

a notary’s office in São Paulo. His
marriage is broken, his daughter

rejects him. He does not resemble
the 18 year-old who once visited
a kibbutz in Israel and traveled
around Europe during the peak
of political effervescence of the
70’s. However, when a criminal
threatens his life, Leon is faced
with a dilemma that will determine
his life’s continuity: passively
allowing himself to be taken by a
current of chaos or finally reinvent
himself.

A former telemarketing
manager leaves São Paulo for
Corumbá and witnesses an
accident in which the victim
is the heir to a great fortune in
the region. Instead of the less
stressful life he dreamed of, the
protagonist becomes entangled
in a web of crimes and deaths.
Patricia Melo is one of the most
representative Brazilian writers
of crime fiction, listed in 1999
among Time magazine’s 50
“Latin American Leaders for the
Next Millennium”. The author is
published in countries such as
England, America, Germany and
China, among others.
The starting point of How
to Disappear Completely is,
ironically, the ending of a love
story. It is also the time of
new beginnings, new desires
and relationships that are
inevitably headed towards
incommunicability. Leones
goes beyond formal narrative,
intertwining dialogues and
fragments of broken language
amid the chaos of the city.
Emails, confessional blogs and
urban settings are elements of a
jigsaw puzzle where love stories
are connected.
André de Leones is the author of
Hoje está um dia morto, winner of
the SESC Prize for Literature in 2005.
Forget about classic aristocratic
and impeccable Rome, the birth
place of the values of civilization.
The setting for this novel is a
noisy city, in which preachers,
beggars, fortune tellers, and
people from different places cross
each others’ paths on narrow
bystreets. Also forget about
idealistic heroes willing to change
the world. Here the protagonist
is Desidero Dolens, a commoner
struggling to rise in life amid the
vices of Roman aristocracy.
Max Mallman was born in 1968, in
Porto Alegre. His novel Síndrome
de quimera was a finalist for the
Jabuti award in 2001, and has also
been published in France.
The sight of Liana on the swing
– red shoes, tutti-frutti smile –
makes Beto’s heart almost slips
out of his mouth. It beats so
fast that the entire square turns
into granny Lelê’s mixer. He had
never felt that way before. Is he
sick? No. Grandpa Dinho explains
everything through a delightful
story: it is a new feeling, a great
passion. This beautiful tale about
the discovery of love by a sixyear-old boy delights readers of
all ages.
Andre Takeda is the author of
two novels and a well known
writer of ciber literature. This is
his first book for young readers.
The day before an important math
test, Luna, a 13 year-old girl, receives
the visit of an unusual fairy. Tatu,
the little fairy, needs to help Luna
complete a mission that involves
Lara, the most stuck-up girl in
school. With hard work and a touch
of magic, Tatu earns Luna’s trust and
a world of discoveries is disclosed
to her. The author’s good-humored
narrative will delight the reader with
this contemporary fairy tale.

A colorful kingdom, full of
flowers, where things are
separated by colors. Everything is
so beautiful to smell and see, but
those who live there are not able
to get to know one another!
Could it be that the color of

really separate these childbutterflies?
Everybody loves Grandma
Neném, who can tell stories like
no-one else.
And she also knows how to do
even more beautiful things, like

In Brazil, Almanac is a very
popular kind of book, containing
information on seasons, wheather,
the best days to sow and to crop.
They usually include also a lot of
various information and things to
entertain farmers and peasants.
Ruth Rocha has created a very
funny and entertaining Almanac
for children. Stories, riddles and
things to do when you’re bored to
death can be found by children in
Ruth Rocha’s Almanac.
Once upon a time there was...
a girl who kept thinking on

and think, too.

This book provides to its readers
a full and scathing analysis of
more than five hundred years
of Brazilian history. Based on
researches of many historians
who have thought on Brazil,
including the authors of this
book, it opposes different
opinions to search for an
interpretative synthesis of our
country, providing elements to
help to understand, in depth,
questions which pierce the
formation of the Brazilian society
and today confront it.
The book shows Renato
Imbroisi’s career as a consultant
in handicraft design through his
reports of successful partnerships
with textile artisans. The projects
– representing all regions of
Brazil and especially embroidery,
basketry, crochet, lace, and
weaving – feature pictures of the
most significant in each group. The
book ends with a description of
the stages of a design consulting,
including aspects, such as
professionalism in administration,
sales, entrepreneurship,
environmental isseus, among
others, and a brief historical
account of the emergence of craft
and design.
Sustainability represents a
challenge to organization leaders.
The need for endogenous
changes, social entrepreneurship,
the issue of citizen solidarity and
other incendiary topics are on
the agenda of sustainability. In
face of the arguing about waste
and unbridled consumerism, the
sustainability way is more than
necessary. Ricardo Voltolini, a
journalist, interviews pioneering
entrepreneurs who have a more
integrated view of their business
within the environmental and
social context, and they talk
about what they did to make their
businesses sustainable.
Sobral is one of the leading
chefs in Portugal. Known for his
inimitable ability to modernize
the more traditional Lusitanian
dishes, he has not lost connection
with the products, seasonings,
and flavors typical of the Alentejo,
the region where he grew up.
This book aims to record the
evolution of the chef, more
specifically his relationship with
the kitchens of the Portuguesespeaking countries, using mainly
Brazilian ingredients to enrich the
dishes. 77 tasty recipes, illustrated
by beautiful photographs are
accompanied by a presentation of
culinary journalist JA Dias Lopes.
The book brings together articles
by leading authorities in nuclear
physics, science and technology,
economy and environment, in
order to discuss the risks and
benefits of large scale use of
atomic energy as a substitute for
current fossil fuels – with emphasis
on its implementation in Brazil.
It’s a perspective that should not
be overlooked when one reflects
on the need to supply energy for
development and on the longannounced depletion of fossil fuel
deposits in the near future.

In The Creation of the World
the Brazilian author Vera do
Val has collected the legends
and myths of the Amazonian
people concerning the origins
of the night, the stars, the
moon, the rivers, and the world.
The illustrations by Geraldo
Valério – colourful collages with
magnificent and unusual forms
– are the crowning achievement
of the book, resulting in a
dazzling tribute to the culture of
indigenous tribes in Brazil. From
the same creators, WMF Martins
Fontes has published Histórias
da onça e do macaco (Tales of
the Jaguar and the Monkey) and
Histórias dos bichos brasileiros
(Tales of the Brazilian animals).
One day, Djô, a little yellow
monkey who dreams of flying,
winds up in a circus where he
makes friends with the elephant
Rebab. Rebab is old and tired and
wants to go back to the place
where he was born. On their
journey back to the forest, Djô and
Rebab discover the true meaning
of friendship.
From the same author: As asas
do crocodilo (Crocodile Wings),
O marujo das árvores (The Tree
Sailor) and Persifal e Dagobert
(Persifal and Dagobert).
Accompanying Roy and Ruthy
in their daily lives, this book
discovers the secret to the love
that unites this mousy couple.
A title that explores what it
means to like someone, the love
between friends and the love
between couples. It’s a secret
as simple and delicate as the
illustrations and text by Marcelo
Cipis.
The best way to face a fear is to
toy with it and demystify it. This
book does exactly that. It tells the
story of a boy who is returning
home alone when, all of a sudden,
everything goes dark. His feet kick
a bottle, a dog takes fright, and off
they both go on a crazy adventure
that leads into the Dark Alley.
Darkness, strange noises,
shadows, an empty house and...
there you have the yellow mystery
of the night. Inspired by his work
as a storyteller, Fabio Lisboa
gathers together, in the form
of a book, all these fascinating
elements that incite the reader
to challenge dreams and use the
imagination.
Roberto, Chico and Marina
adore the rain, especially when a
rainbow appears in the sky. One
day, however, instead of the usual
strip of colour, there appears a
single white band. What is going
on? The three go up into the sky,
where they meet a witch who
doesn’t like to see people happy
and so stole all the colours from
the rainbow. The children manage
to get them back, but so as not to
make the witch even sadder, they
decide to leave her a little present
– in the end, things turn out well
for all concerned.

Gabriela is 16-year-old and lives
the normal routine of a middleclass teenager in Rio de Janeiro:
school, a big group of friends, the
beach, parties and the emotion
of first love. But she has a secret
that makes her different to other
teens. She is heir to the powers
of the mythical prophet Monah,
and the burden of this legacy
is always with her. Everything
seems to be going well until the
girl receives the news that she
has dreaded for so long: The MIC
– Malign Intelligence Centre– has
a plan that threatens to enslave
all of humanity. A thrilling
adventure set in Rio de Janeiro,
Brasília and the terrifying castle
in the Forest of Dreams.
Imaculada, as her name would
have it, should have been pure.
But in the first stirrings of a
Republic that couldn’t find its true
calling, in a country that couldn’t
find its peace before the coming
war, she lost her innocence.
This novel is a convergence of

1920s and 30s, marked by its
dependence on coffee exports,
urban workers, Italian immigrants
and members of the elite make
up a cross-slice of a society which
laid the foundations for a future
that frequently proved unbearable.
Ivone Benedetti’s engaging first
novel was shortlisted for the São
Paulo Literature Prize in 2010 and
has been extensively praised.
André was a very poor boy
who once saved a turtle that
gave him a magic powder. The
powder enabled him to grow
trees sprouting all kinds of
objects: shoes, hairbrushes, toys,
and even lasagna. No wonder
the powder started him off on a
fantastic adventure.
Ilan Brenman is the author of
over 35 books for children and
has been travelling the world for
the last 18 years to advocate the
importance of reading and telling
stories in our lives. From the
same author, WMF Martins Fontes
has also published A barba do
rabino (The Rabbi’s Beard).
Brazilian mythology, like all
others, is made up of elements
from various cultures. Figures like
Saci (a typical Brazilian one-legged
wood sprite), the werewolf, and
the headless mule, among others,
are mythical figures that harbour
a mixture of influences, especially
from the Indigenous, African
and Portuguese cultures. Their
appearance and the legends that
surround them vary from region to
region and time to time, changing
as they are passed on by word of
mouth. All this diversity can be
found in this book, and the stories
have been shared with the author
by the people who really saw
them, interacted with them or felt
their presence.
When Europeans first arrived
in Brazil, the Atlantic Rainforest
covered 1.3 million km2 and
amazed the newcomers. But that
image of an earthly paradise has
changed. Predatory extraction
has destroyed more than 93%
of the rainforest, decimating its
plants and animals. As for the
Brazilwood tree, the demand for its
dye – which introduced red into
European fashion – and first-class
wood had already caused a drastic
reduction in its numbers by the
16th century. The story of the tree
is told by means of informative
texts and lush illustrations. PauBrasil is the first title in the “Um
pé de quê?” (What Tree Is This?)
series, based on a TV programme.

Guide to Medicines and
Nursing Care meets health
care professional encounters,
especially nurses, in many
working areas. It is a didactic
book for quick reference of the
main medications used in clinical
practice, but also presents specific
nursing care for each medicine.
Most activities performed by
nursing professionals are related
to medications; therefore, it is
necessary to be familiar with their
pharmacological principles, side
effects and specific nursing care.
This work brings together all this
information in a both concise and
practical way, resulting in fewer
cases of iatrogenic diseases and
more safety for the patient.
Major contribution to breaking
down paradigms that involve
care as a profession, this book
shows how professionals needs
to be familiar with the history
that surrounds them in order to
be able to build a perspective
of the future and give their own
contribution to the profession.
Dedicated to nursing students
and professionals, this book
describes the entire path of
this profession throughout the
years. Emphasizing the history
of nursing in Brazil, it presents
not only the “Lady of Charity”,
Anna Nery, but also other nurses
who, even though not so largely
known, have contributed to the
evolution and progress of the
profession.
Sensitive to making the text
pleasant to readers, this book
presents a commendable
referential research and a holistic
approach of humanistic care from
its origins to the present day.
Wounds: fundamentals and
updates on nursing begins its
considerations on the principle
that the client is, first of all, a
human being.
Through more practical
reflexions, some issues are
raised concerning biological
fundamentals of the wounds,
microbiological aspects and
infection, systematization of
nursing assistence, nutritional
support and therapeutic
methods. Once it is necessary to
know the singularities of lesions
in specific ailments, the book
also contains lavishly illustrated
chapters about dermatological
and autoimmune diseases,
ostomies, tumoral injuries,
diabetic foot, compression and
vasculogenic ulcers.
Nowadays, a very strict
legislation is what prevails when
it comes to environmental
management in organizations.
Consequently, a large number
of institutions has overcome
the paradigm that presents
environment and competition
as opposite variables. It should
be pointed out that this initially
imposed awareness, created by
market competition, has caused
behavioral modifications and good
opportunities for companies.
Environmental Management in
Hospitals brings a new overview
of the hospital routine, offering to
environmental managers, hospital
administrators and everyone else
involved in socio-environmental
issues, an innovative work.
Firstly focused on exclusive
psychiatric patients, the
experience expanded itself to
a much wider world, inhabited
by patients from other medical
specialties. The transcendence
of such boundaries demands a
redevelopment of the physicians’
attitudes to face new challenges
that may come from those new
little known extents.
Designed for all healthcare
professionals, Antidepressant
Use in Medical Contexts
intends to contribute to the
knowledge of psychiatrists who
work with inter-consultation
and, at the same time, to help
professionals of other medical
specialties to decide on the use of
antidepressants when necessary.

One day planet Earth awoke
with a fever. Went to the doctor
and found out that the problem
was the global warming. To
solve this situation, the planet
has assembled several children.
Together they have understood
that only love can change
people and save the planet.
This book is essential nowadays
when the environmental issue is
extensively debated worldwide.
There is nothing better than start
talking about this matter with
children who are the future of
our planet.
Playing with the sounds of
words, the author tells us the
story of an egg, which fell down
one day, broke down and from
inside it, came out a chick. From
this episode, the story portrays
the chick’s life until it becomes a
Carijó* chicken, lays an egg and
everything starts all over again.
There was once an egg…
This is a book that entertains and
delights children of all ages. With
a simple structure, it proves to be
quite suitable for children in the
process of learning to read.
Discussed themes: cycle of life
and environment
* Carijó is a variety of black
chicken with white spots
It all began by chance. With a
toad that lived in the pond and
one day decided to redecorate
his house and to give an opening
party to all animals. After the party
the life of the animals was never
the same. Everyone wanted a
house as beautiful as the toad’s.
But will that consumerism destroy
the life of the pond’s fellows?
Discussed themes: environment,
multiculturalism and ethics.
We are just sons is a text that
approaches several aspects
of an indigenous nation’s
origin and shows that we are
connected to the four elements
of nature: water, earth, fire and
air. The author, a member of the
Potiguara nation from northern
Brazil, shows with poetry and
symbolism, that we are sons of
the water, of the earth, of the
fire and of the air, and that is the
why we are just sons! Sons of the
nature.
Discussed themes: environment,
multiculturalism and ethics.
The Prince in trouble is a
modern retelling of fairy tales.
The story brings a very humorous
adventure including a kidnapped
prince and princesses and
plebeians trying to save him, with
women making the decisions in
this fairy tale in reverse. A book to
be read by the whole family, once
it will delight people of all ages.
Guaranteed fun!
Discussed themes: cultural
diversity, environment, ethics and
sexuality.
