LETTER FROM THE FRANKLIN COUNTY WELCOME CENTER Adventure seekers and History buffs will be fascinated with Franklin County’s versatility. Step back in time to experience what life on the canal was like in the Nineteenth century. Ride the Ben Franklin III horse drawn canal boat as the early settlers did long ago. Hear the firing of cannons or witness one of Abraham Lincoln’s famous speeches during one of Metamora’s re-enactments. Hike the same trails or take a canoe down the same Whitewater River the pioneers did when they discovered Brookville. Listen for the call of the wolves and discover arrowheads during the Annual Native American Gathering. 1-866-647-6555 www.franklincountyin.com 813 Main Street Experience the wonders of Franklin County, Indiana. FRANKLIN COUNTY I N D I A N A BROOKVILLE OLDENBURG METAMORA BROOKVILLE Brookville is home to the beautiful Brookville Lake and the amazing Whitewater River. The water recreation options are nearly endless with award winning fishing, boating, canoeing, skiing, and swimming at the beach or pool side. Not to mention horseback riding, hiking, golfing, zip lining and so much more. Looking for something indoors? That perfect gift or just a little something to take home could be in one of Brookville’s quaint shops that support local artisans, antiques and more. Franklin County is known for one of the largest Antique tractor shows. Vendors and artisans will take you back in time demonstrating the history and talent of making brooms, weaving, pottery, horse milled sorghum, running a saw mill and harvesting a field during the 4 day show. This is an event you will not want to miss. In 2010 CanoeFest made plans to celebrate the Chicken Trail, the Great Chicken Fry off and the possibility of breaking the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest serving of fried chicken. They obtained the record by filling a new Canoe with 1645 pounds of fried chicken. How many chickens can you spot? 1 FRANKLIN COUNTY INDIANA FRANKLIN COUNTY INDIANA 2 ACCOMMODATIONS Banes Suite 19062 South Main St., Metamora 513-314-5693 www.metamoraindiana.com/ BanesSuite.htm The Grand Arbor Cabin and Nature Preserve Metamora 513-535-7378 www.thegrandarbor.com The Brookville Inn 1049 Main St., Brookville 765-647-5522 www.thebrookvilleinn.com Hampton Inn 1030 St. Rd. 229 N, Batesville 812-934-6262 / 1-800-HAMPTON www.hamptoninn.com Brookville Lodge 801 Main St., Brookville 765-547-1900 www.brookvillelodge.com The Hermitage Bed and Breakfast 650 East 8th St., Brookville 765-647-5182 / 877-407-9198 www.bbonline.com/in/hermitage The Cat and the Fiddle at the Thorpe House 19049 Clayborn St., Metamora 513-403-0672 www.catandfiddlemetamora.com Hickory Road Inn 20116 Hickory Rd., Batesville 812-933-0335 / 812-525-4851 www.hickoryinn.com The Grapevine Inn 10083 Bridge St., Metamora 765-647-3738 or 317-502-0566 www.emetamora.com/grapevine The Metamora Inn 19049 Wynn St., Metamora 765-647-2176 www.themetamorainn.com 3 FRANKLIN COUNTY INDIANA Mistover Inn 36 Duckcreek Crossing, Metamora 647-2176 Morgan’s Canoe and Cabins 7040 Whitewater River Lane, Brookville 1-888-304-4904 www.morganscanoe.com CAMP ING Mound Haven Motel 9238 Us HWY 52, Brookville 765-647-4149 www.moundhavenmotel.com Brookville Lake DNR www.camp.In.gov 765-647-2657 Twadelle River House 12163 St Mary’s Rd., Brookville 765-647-2843 http://www.twadelleriverhouse.com Franklin County Parks near 4-H grounds 7178 Blue Creek Rd., Brookville 765-647-4422 Salt Creek Ranch 21040 US HWY 52, Laurel 765-698-2044 www.saltcreekranch.com Woodland Retreat 25124 Kokomo Hill Rd., Laurel 765-698-2294 or 765-265-2789 www.woodland-retreat.net Ye Old Robins Nest 19051 Mount St., Metamora 765-647-0100 www.metamoraindiana.com Haspin Acres 21208 Laurel Rd., Laurel 765-698-2420 www.haspinacres.com Whitewater Canoe Rental and Camping 11162 US HWY 52, Brookville 765-647-2330 or 1-800-634-4277 www.whitewatercanoerental.com Whitewater Valley Gateway Park 19067 US HWY 52, Metamora 765-647-2541 www.whitewatercanalscenicbyway.org FRANKLIN COUNTY INDIANA 4 Metamora is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, home of the Whitewater Canal State Historic FRANKLIN COUNTY Site, and the Whitewater Canal Byway Association Pavilion. I N D I A N A BROOKVILLE OLDENBURG METAMORA OLDENBURG A small town known as the ‘Village of Spires’ noting it’s towering churches was found in the late 1830’s by German Settlers. This small German Catholic town, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, has abundent architectural history. Stop by and grab a self guided tour “A Walk Through Historic Oldenburg” as the town will take you back to the 1800’s when it was first settled. Call ahead and make a reservation to tour the main building of the Sisters of St. Francis Convent and even go on a small scavenger hunt for hidden images throughout the buildings. Take a bike ride or a leisure drive, grab the Vatican Ride Brochure and venture out to experience the nine Catholic churches in Franklin County. Stop by the Village Store for their homemade sausage. In July come by for the famous “Freudenfest” which means Festival of Fun as a 2 day celebration breaks out in the streets. Music and German Beer is always available along with great food at the locally owned and operated restaurants. Stop by the Creche Shop, the Schwestern Art Gallery, or the local antique store all within walking distance. So come, enjoy the scenery and experience what Oldenburg is all about. The painting of the hydrants started in 1976 during the Bicentennial. At first they were all painted as historic founders such as George Washington, and Ben Franklin. Over time they have faded and are now replaced with important Oldenburg figures such as Father Franz Joseph Rudolf and Tinsmith Caspar Gaupel.
