MAY 22, 2016 15089 NEWBURGH ROAD LIVONIA, MICHIGAN 48154 (734) 464-1222 / 464-1223 • Fax: (734) 464-7582 www.stedith.org Fr. Jim’s Journal Fr. James McNulty NEXT WEEKEND, ON THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI, I INVITE ALL OF YOU TO SPEND SOME TIME IN ADORATION BEFORE THE BLESSED SACRMENT AFTER MASS. We will have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at the end of each of the weekend Masses and adoration for one hour in the church. If you have not been involved in Eucharistic adoration in the past, you may be unsure of how to approach it. Any quiet personal prayer is appropriate during adoration. You can pray the Rosary or bring a prayer book or spiritual reading. Sometimes just sitting quietly in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament and talking to and listening to God is the best way to spend the hour. The primary value of Eucharistic Adoration is the opportunity for quiet prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. God is always present to us when we pray, but there is something powerful about prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Genuflection is a sign of reverence, and it is appropriate to genuflect before the Blessed Sacrament upon entering and leaving exposition, if you are physically able. Standing, sitting, and kneeling are all appropriate prayer postures during adoration. I would suggest that you adopt a prayer posture that is conducive to prayer for you. For example, kneeling is a reverent and appropriate for some, but for others it is just uncomfortable. If you spend more time thinking about how uncomfortable it is to be kneeling than praying, kneeling is not a good prayer posture for you. There are not a lot of strict rubrics for exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. An overall atmosphere of prayerful reverence is important. PLEASE JOIN US FOR EUCHARISTIC EXPOSITION AND ADORATION ON TUESDAYS. We are privileged to have Eucharistic exposition and adoration each Tuesday. Only a very limited number of people take advantage of this opportunity. It begins after the 9:00 AM morning Mass and concludes at 9:00 PM in the evening. It is a time for quiet personal prayer. A number of people have told me that the hour each week that they spend in adoration is the only quiet hour they have during the week, and they really look forward to the experience. WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO COMMIT TO ATTENDING ADORATION ON A PARTICUALR SCHEDULE SO THAT WE CAN ENSURE THAT SOMEONE WILL BE IN THE CHAPEL AT ALL TIMES. If you commit to a particular hour, you are more likely to come each week. We also need people that we can call if someone is unable to keep their commitment. When you come, please sign the book so that I know how many people are participating. If you are willing to volunteer, please contact Tom Rist at (734) 718-1172. Try it, you’ll like it. GOSPEL OF LIFE Every Life is Worth Living from Conception to Natural Death A reflection from Father James McKarns: "Bearing Fruit: A venerable old apple tree lives in a nearby park beside the walking path I have traveled many times. Each year, in the late summer, the tree generously offers its fruit to people, birds and neighborhood rabbits. Two years ago, a treacherous winter storm broke a large limb and left it lying in the snow, still clinging to the tree. The next season, to my amazement, the limb produced its usual copious fruit. That apple tree is an example of perseverance. So, when I might have a serious illness, accident, tragedy or aging problem, I am reminded of my need to cling to life and continue to be productive. A foolish person may be devastated by a loss. But, to the wise, a loss becomes a lesson. We can offer our gifts to give glory to God, kindness to people and respect for all creatures. We have been appointed by God to bear good fruit in all the seasons. I'm confident the old apple tree is planning another generous crop next season."
