BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC SCHOOL
It is time to return to school for the 2016-2017 school year. Are you excited? We
surely are! Teachers have begun putting their personal touches on their classrooms
and have already had several in-service and in-school meetings to be ready for your
arrival! Families can find out more details at the Meet the Teacher Cook-out on Sunday, August 14, from 3-5 p.m. Families should go directly to the classrooms to meet
your teachers and get your carline packets. You may bring your school supplies. The
cook-out will be in the tents on the black-top!
The students will notice just a few changes. Some classrooms are in different areas of the school building,
and we welcome new students and faculty! We welcome back Ms. Lori Barabas as music teacher, Ms. Sandra Sanford as teacher for the second K4 with Mrs. Dawna Medders as her assistant, and Ms. Barbara McAllan as the literature teacher for middle school. Mrs. Summer Teegardin will begin the year in K3 while Mrs.
Sophie Fulmer is on maternity leave. We welcome Mrs. Katherine (Kinard) Davis, a BSCS graduate, as teacher for first grade, Ms. Alyssa Yesalavich as teacher for the second K3 class with Mrs. Andi Campbell as her
assistant, and Mrs. Katie Arthurs as the Academic Support teacher for all grades. Mrs. Whitney Engel will
be the Assistant Director of Extended Day. Welcome, one and all!
School starts on Monday, August 15th. We are very excited to see your smiling faces and to hear your
laughter as the 2016-2017 school year begins! Our school day begins at 7:50 a.m., and students dismiss at
2:35 p.m. Please remember that on the first two days of school, August 15th and August 16th, all students
will be dismissed at 12:00 noon with no Extended Day. August 17th is the first full day of school, and Extended Day (Early Bird, 6:30-7:30 am; and after school, 2:30-6:00 p.m.) begins.
This year includes changes to the carline route. The new route does not allow left turns onto Morton Drive
or Brennon Street; thus, the route from Savannah Highway is at Moore Drive (by John Wesley United Methodist Church) and around the loop to Saint Theresa Drive. Cars exit to the right when leaving BSCS carline
(yet another no left turn).
This year includes updates to the uniforms (K4-8th). All logoed items must have the chalice and cross
logo! Please see the school website for more updates.
Uniforms may be ordered online through Land's End or purchased locally or ordered through Read's Uniforms (Orleans Road, across from Citadel Mall). Rising 8th graders and 5th graders are exempt from the
day-to-day changes! 8th graders are also exempt from the PE uniform changes. All students must adhere
to the changes for shoes!
The school website (www.scbss.org) is updated daily, so that's a good way to keep informed. Our school
Facebook page is www.facebook.com/blessedsacramentschoolsc. Of course, you may always call (843-7662128) or email ([email protected]).

RESPECT LIFE
We are
destined, in this life, to be divided from
at least some people, and today's
readings urge us to be divided for the
right reasons. Prejudice continues to
raise walls between people. That is the
division that happens all too naturally,
and the conflict between the culture of life and the
culture of death is largely a problem of prejudice against
the unborn, the elderly, and the disabled. None of the
reasons offered for abortion would be tolerated as
reasons to kill the born; it is only because the victims are
unborn that they become victims. Similarly, none of the
reasons for killing the less functional people would be
tolerated as reasons to kill the functioning; hence again,
prejudice is revealed as the real problem.
TODAY'S READINGS:
When we stand against that prejudice, however, we get
treated like Jeremiah. He was accused of "demoralizing
the soldiers" because he was saying that the
Babylonians, who were about to attack Jerusalem, could
not be stopped because they were being used by God to
punish His people. The problem was not military or
political, Jeremiah said, but rather moral. In our day,
when we point out the moral problems that stand at the
foundation of so many other societal ills, we too will be
rejected and mocked.
Moreover, issues like abortion will divide family
members, as the Gospel promises, and will require us to
resist sin even "to the point of shedding blood," as the
second reading says. The blood to be shed, in other
words, is our own, as we stand against the opposition
that others will launch against us. The fact that so
many people will say, "The opposition against me isn't
that bad and I don't foresee that it will be" becomes in
fact a good reason to stop worrying about what will
happen to us when we fight for what is right.
