If our recent experiences are any indication, the future of Streamwood looks very bright. At all ages and school levels, our students are doing a great job and making us very proud. Streamwood High School seniors took over the town on May 11 for Student Government Day. Students worked with the Board and staff to get a hands-on view of local government. We recently finished our May DARE graduations in the elementary schools. I am always impressed with the heartfelt essays the students write, and the power- President Roth with Student Government ful messages they return to us about Day President Alena Lulchak what they have learned. We would like thank our DARE Officers Steve Millar and Matt Stastny for giving our students the tools they need to succeed. Streamwood High School Seniors recently took over the Village, Township and Park District for a day, when ninety students participated in Student Government Day. We would like to thank George Rosner and the Civics Department for their enthusiastic support for this program. We are delighted with the historic success of the Streamwood High School Baseball team. Many team members have also received scholarships to college, indicating good balance between athletic and academic success. We are also proud to recognize the artistic talents of our high school students through the annual Village Board Art Purchase Award. This year’s winners are Rosa Aparicio, Katie Craft, Jocelynn Garcia, and Kimberly Keyser. Be sure to take a look at the incredible talent of these and other students on your next trip to Village Hall. Finally, at a recent Village Board meeting, we honored the 2011 DECA and HOSA competition teams. Certificates were presented to students who received top honors in state and international events. Congratulations, Sabres! DARE Graduations 5th Graders from Oakhill, Ridge, Hilltop, and Sunnydale recently completed their DARE programming, where students learned life skills on avoiding drugs, gangs, and peer pressure. Village Clerk Kittie Kopitke • Email: [email protected] Memorial Day 2011 Hard rains drove our 20th Anniversary Memorial Day Ceremony inside Village Hall. Still, hundreds of people came to honor and thank those who gave their lives for our country. Go Green for a ‘Green‘ Lawn! 2011 Little City Book Fair We all like a nice green lawn. What about a “green” lawn? Fertilizers and weed killers impact our water quality and pollute our lakes and streams. Our Natural Resource Conservancy Commission offers these tips for a “greener” lawn: • Don’t bag grass. Grass clippings add nitrogen and reduce the need for fertilizers. • Keep it long. Mow no closer than 3 inches to shade weeds and reduce pesticide use. • Use natural herbicides. Boiling water, soap solutions and vinegar can kill weeds on contact. • Water well. Lawns need about one inch of water. Make a water gauge – a cup or container with a ruler – and use a timer to figure out how long the sprinkler has to run to get to one inch. • Water wisely. Don’t water in hot, dry weather when grass goes dormant; your grass will recover in the fall. • Consider a rain barrel. Collect water from roof and eave downspouts and use to water your lawn. Bring friends and family to the 2011 Little City Book Fair on August 19-21 at Harper College (1200 W Algonquin Road, Palatine). Be one of the first shoppers to pick from the best collection of over 100,000 new and gently used books in nearly 60 subject categories. CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, comic books and collectors books will also be available. All proceeds benefit children and adults with autism, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. For more information, visit www.littlecity.org/bookfair Using less fertilizers and herbicides also saves money. Go green, for a “green” lawn, and save some green! Branch Pickup 2011 Place branches at the curb by 6:00 am on the designated Monday for your area (see map and schedule below). Branches must be placed with the cut ends facing the street, and no longer than 8' in length, and 6” in diameter. Ten public libraries were chosen from around the nation as inspirational and informative building projects for the Library community. The magazine called the Library “flexible, functional, and fabulous… the Library went all out, with its glass beacon tower, colorful and soaring open spaces, a 100' LED panel light-wall, and the duly named tech Green Zone… Together, these bold moves mean the Poplar Creek renovation and expansion raises the bar on library design.” Congratulations! Our Schools in the News Denise Lockwald – Principal of the Year Denise Lockwald, principal of Sunnydale Elementary School, was honored recently for her selection as the Principal of the Year for Hanover Township. She earned this honor by being a champion for her students, a supporter of her families, and a friend to her community. Serving the Sunnydale community since 2004, her enthusiasm has not diminished with time. Whenever possible she is in classrooms or involved in activities with her students. She invites her students to visit during the day and read to her. She has been spotted exercising with students to encourage their healthy life style, helping the school to win 1st Place in the District’s Healthy Life Style and Wellness event. Coffees, curriculum nights, picnics, multicultural nights, and other events designed to encourage family involvement are also part of her mission. Always one to get involved, she is the friendly waitress serving and bussing tables at PTO Family Dinner Nights. Ms. Lockwald has supported the community with a cereal drive for Hanover Township. To ensure “extras” for her school she has coordinated a formal dress sale that raised funds for literacy needs – and an affordable dress for the shoppers. In her spare time Ms. Lockwald sits on district committees to ensure the voice of her school is heard. Sunnydale is indeed a busy, active school with a principal determined to keep it that way. Congratulations! Congratulations Sabres Baseball The 2010-2011 Streamwood High School baseball team is truly one that will live in history!
