Streamwood High School Recognitions
The Village Board recognized a number of outstanding Streamwood High School students, who

The Village Board presented a proclamation,
declaring June 23, 2012, as “St. John the

Message From The Village President
Memorial Day 2012
2012 marks our 20th Anniversary of the DARE
Program. Since 1992, the Village of Streamwood
has been proud to offer Drug Abuse Resistance
Education (DARE) programming in our schools.
DARE is a key component in our crime prevention
and community policing initiatives. It educates
our youth about the dangers of drug and alcohol
abuse. More importantly, it gives our children the
skills they need to make good choices throughout
their lives. We recently finished our May DARE
graduations. I continue to be impressed with the President Roth congratulates recent DARE
graduates and Officers Millar and Stastny.
heartfelt essays the students write, and the powerful messages they return to us about what they have learned. At the June 7 Village Board
meeting, we were able to recognize not only the impressive work of this years’ graduates,
but the dedication and commitment of our Police Department to this program. All of our current and former DARE Officers were recognized. Special recognition was given to Dan Hatt,
Dino Heckermann and Matt Stastny for providing 5 years of DARE education, and to
Steve Millar for providing 16 years of DARE education. We greatly appreciate the work
and dedication they have given our students and community over the past 20 years.
The skies were bright and clear, as hundreds of people braved the heat to
honor and thank those who have given their lives for our country.
The Village was also able to recognize the commitment and dedication of retiring civics
teacher George Rosner. George Rosner was the driving force behind our annual Student
Government Day event for the past 30 years. This year, over eighty Streamwood High
School Seniors took over the Village, Township and Park District for a day, as part of
Student Government Day. We want to thank Mr. Rosner, and the entire Civics Department,
for their enthusiastic support for this program, and wish Mr. Rosner the best in all his future
endeavors.
We were also proud to honor the Streamwood High School 2012 DECA and HOSA competition teams. Certificates were presented to students who received top honors in state and
international events at a recent Board meeting.
On behalf of the Village Board, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the
Veterans Memorial Commission, including Lisa Poturalski, Everett Parpart, Kathryn
Serbin, Eric Cameron, Richard Winterfeld, Dave Stoves, Jim Sobeski and Bill
Lunsford. We also appreciate the assistance of numerous volunteers, for their tireless
efforts and ongoing dedication in making our Memorial Day Observance unforgettable. It
was an especially bittersweet memorial observance for the Commission, who lost long-time
member Joe Marino. Joe proudly served in the US Air Force, and was a tireless advocate
for veterans. He was a dedicated member of our Commission. He will be missed.
With Memorial Day passed, our thoughts turn to summer. Summer is the perfect time to get out
of the house, enjoy the weather and visit with your neighbors. Be sure to join your friends and
neighbors at Dolphin Park for our annual fireworks display on Wednesday, July 4 at 9:15 pm.
Summer in Streamwood would not be complete without Summer Celebration! Come and celebrate your “Hometown Pride” while enjoying great food, good friends and lively entertainment.
The fun begins on Friday, July 27 through Sunday, July 29. If you would like to be a part of the
fun, consider volunteering at the festival! Contact us at (630) 736-3800 or by email at
[email protected]. For more information, visit us at www.streamwood.org.
We look forward to seeing you around town!
Sincerely,
Billie D. Roth, Village President

Summer Fun and Safety
Fireworks, barbecues,
family, and friends are
great combinations for
summer fun. Look out for
hidden danger. Keep children and animals away
from grills and fire pits.

almost 20% of all firework injuries. Use glow
sticks instead to keep your family safe.

Branch Pick-up Schedule
The 2012 Curbside Branch Pick-up program continues. The Village is divided into four areas. Please check the
map to determine your area. Each area is picked up only once per month.
Place your branches on the parkway with the cut ends facing the street, by 6:00 am on the designated date for
your area. Branches should be no greater than six inches (6”) in diameter, though they may be any length.
Please remember – It is important to have your branches out Monday morning. Please be patient if your
branches are still at the curb Monday afternoon. They will be picked up during your pick-up week.
Cell Phone Safety
Driving, while talking
on a cell phone, has
become a significant
cause of accidents.
New state statutes

emergency. Violators face a fine of $250. The
Police Department has been actively enforcing
this new law, and will issue tickets to violators.

SEED Event and Art Expo
Hundreds of residents enjoyed Streamwood
Environmental Education Day (SEED) and our Art
Appreciation around the World events on April
28. Many expressed surprise at the ease of
walking to both events along the path between
Village Hall and the Library. At the Art Expo,
residents enjoyed speaking to artists, getting a
Mehndi tattoo, or having their caricature
done. At the SEED event, residents learned
useful gardening tips and conservation techniques, and enjoyed a birds of prey demonstration. Over 12,000 lbs. of e-waste was
collected at the SEED event.
DARE Graduations
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) is an important part of our Police Department’s community-based policing. Officers work with kids to educate them about avoiding peer pressure and drug use, and learning to make
better choices. In May, students at Hanover-Countryside, Heritage, Parkwood and Sunnydale schools completed
their DARE instructions. President Roth, members of the Village Board, and Police Department personnel were on
hand to present the graduates with certificates of completion. Congratulations DARE graduates!
We all like a nice green lawn. What about a
“green” lawn? The fertilizer or weed killer
you use, can impact our water quality.
Consider these tips for a “green” lawn:
• Don’t bag grass. Clippings left on the
lawn add nitrogen and reduce fertilizer
use.
• Keep it long. Long grasses shade weeds.
Blood Drive – August 22
The Village’s Blood Commission will host a blood drive on August 22 at Village Hall between 2:00 – 8:00 pm. Call
Chairman Jan Klee at (630) 289-9599 for more information or to register. Walk-ins are always welcome!
Grabbing some take-out, or going out to dinner? Think about dining local! When you eat out in
town, your tax dollars stay in town, too. Many of our local businesses offer great coupons and meal
deals. Visit www.streamwood.org and click on our Shop Streamwood! logo for a directory of local restaurants.
Candlelight Bowling and Scholarship Fundraiser
The Streamwood Chamber of Commerce will host a fundraiser on Saturday, August 4. Enjoy a night of networking, bowling and pizza, at Streamwood Lanes, to benefit the Chamber Scholarship Fund. For more information,

• Water well. Lawns need about one inch
of water to be well irrigated. Make a water
gauge – a cup or container with a ruler –
and use a timer to figure out how long the
sprinkler has to run to get to one inch.
Water no more than once per week.
• Water wisely. It is not necessary to water
in hot, dry weather when grass goes dormant; dormant grass will recover in the
fall.
• Consider a rain barrel. Collect water
from roof and eave downspouts and use to
water your lawn. Be sure to use a deep collection barrel however, to avoid creating a
habitat for mosquitoes.

relationship between academics and technical skill development. CTE programs develop
skills for post-secondary education and future careers. CTE student achievements include:
• At the Precision Machining Awards Ceremony, students from Streamwood High
School earned five first place awards, from the Tool and Manufacturing
Association.
• DECA is an international organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. More than
15,000 DECA students, advisors, alumni and affiliated business representatives from
all fifty states and around the world attended their International Conference in Salt
Lake City, Utah. Sabrina Minhas, an SHS senior, placed first overall in the Hotel &
Lodging Management Event at the conference.
Award-winning DECA students received Certificates of Achievement . . .
• Students have earned scholarships/dual college credits professional certifications in the
Culinary, Automotive, Apparel/Textile Design, Computer Information, Early Childhood
Education, Manufacturing, Accounting and Healthcare Science fields in CTE classes and
leadership events.
The areas in CTE/STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) are:
• Business education
• Healthcare sciences
• Technology Education (Automotive Technology, Manufacturing and Design
Technology, and Engineering and Design Technology)
• Culinary
• Apparel and Textile Design
• Early Childhood Education
…as did award-winning HOSA students at a recent Village Board meeting.
