Letter from the Chief Executive Officer & Board President >> Dear YWCA Friends, Please join us as we celebrate 106 years of changing lives in our community. Our important mission and rich heritage of focusing on women and children continue to strengthen and rebuild families. Our programs and services continue to bring positive changes in the lives of those we serve. We have a lot to be thankful for this year as we celebrate some tremendous accomplishments in what continued to be another year of organizational transformation. Thank you to our members, community partners, and volunteers for your support, hard work, and dedication that enabled us to accomplish many important milestones to ensure future growth of our organization. As we move forward, we are excited about our strategic direction, expanded youth programs, newly developed community programs and services, and a new marketing communication platform that will enable us to further our great mission and serve more individuals and families in our community. Hanes Foundation Reynolds American The Winston-Salem Foundation Continued transformation and improvements at our Gateway facility Considerable expansion of Youth Wellness and Preventative Health programs Strong growth in Seniors and our Silver Sneakers Program Continued strategic partnerships YWCA Best Choice Center >> changing young lives through educational enrichment & guided intervention The YWCA Best Choice Center is a highly academic-focused center that assists children from lower income families by providing educational enrichment, social skill development, tutoring, and mentoring. By providing quality, engaging programs such as before/after school care, summer camp & fun days in a caring, supportive environment, this unique YWCA facility and its staff are able to inspire children & families to reach their full potential. 2013-2014 Highlights Strong academic results continue Number of children on the honor roll 26 vs. 16 last year, +60% All students advanced grade level Increased programs and services with key partners: Angels of the Best Choice, Don and Robbin Flow, Farm Fresh Healthy Living, Girls Scouts, and Reynolds American Foundation Swim lessons offered free to over 100 youth during summer camp The Drewry Nostitz/Virginia Newell Angels of the Best Choice Fund made the following possible: Every child received a beautiful teal t-shirt to wear on field trips, making students easily recognizable Each child, regardless of parents’ ability to pay, was able to go on field trips to the Natural Science Center and SciQuarium and to Chapel Hill’s Morehead Planetarium Software that enhances the tutoring and homework assistance Youth Intervention Services The Best Choice Center also serves as home to the Teen Court and Work and Earn It programs, which are all designed to help young people adjudicated for minor offenses provide a chance to correct behavior and find a new path through accountability, community service, restitution, and improved academic performance. YWCA Hawley House >> changing women’s lives through addiction recovery and caring support The YWCA Hawley House assists women in recovery from the disease of addiction. The only licensed substance abuse group home for women in Winston-Salem, the house provides 365 days per year of housing, meals, transportation, work, and counseling. Women receive 9-12 month in-house care and then 6-12 months of aftercare. The life-changing goals of the House: maintaining sobriety, addressing domestic violence, financial stability, reunification of families, behavior modification, improved mental health, and secure housing. 2013-2014 Highlights Project New Start YWCA Hawley House is grateful to have local author and YWCA Project New Start provides assistance, teacher Dr. Francene Hash who has taught Life Skills to support, and encouragement to women while women of the Hawley House for the past 2 years. The enhanced space and additional resources also allowed for more effective programming for Youth Wellness and Preventative Health initiatives. The change can be seen throughout the facility. New Media Center: An attractive, eye-catching media center was added in the downstairs Hallway to highlight upcoming events/programs as well as share information on our continuing work in the community. changing lives through fitness and aquatics programming Aquatics Fitness The Gateway Helen C. Hanes Aquatics Center, features a competition swimming pool, family Water Park, and whirlpool. It can accommodate lap swimmers, water exercise classes, kayaking, swim lessons, swim teams, and swim meets. The Gateway YWCA Fitness Center offers a large selection of state-of-the-art fitness equipment, offers a variety of fitness classes for every ability level, and provides a customized options for group and personal training. This year the fitness department introduced several exciting new classes, programs, and initiatives to help members better identify and reach their fitness goals. 2013 - 2014 Highlights Sea Dragons swim team continues strong Growth in Swim Lessons including free swim lessons for all youth at our Best Choice facility Expanded Aquatics class offerings Masters swim team excelled in regional meets Cannon grant provided new lift for our pool making it accessible to all 2013 - 2014 Highlights Next — FREE personal fitness plans New fitness coaches and group orientations Bridge the Gap competition New Boot Camp Class Gateway Family 5K Expanded Body Pump and Les Mills classes YWCA Gateway Health & Wellness Center >> Preventive Health Our Preventive Health program provides health education outreach to those most in need and currently underserved in the community. Gateway was the host location for numerous health forums and workshops as well as social functions to share important health information, providing free screenings and celebrating the importance of health & wellness. 2013 - 2014 Highlights Over 1500 contacts & attendees this year Community healthy cooking classes in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank Wellness Wednesdays cooking classes in partnership with Whole Foods Zumba Heart Health Fair in partnership with Go R.E.D.D. Preventive health seminars on diabetes, eye health, and breast cancer Novant Mobile Breast Cancer screenings Novant Ask-the-Nutrtionist service Flu Shot Clinic in partnership with Walgreens Expansion of Time-4A-Change program Nutrition tips and best practices through the new NEXT personal fitness plan changing lives through preventive health and senior services Seniors/SilverSneakers Our Seniors and SilverSneakers programs provides comprensive wellness services for the senior population encouraging them to stay fit, active, and healthy. Program features include fitness classes, sports activities, preventive health seminars, health screenings, field trips, and fun group activities. 2013 - 2014 Highlights 1,300 seniors, 1,100 are Silver Sneakers Revenue up +22% versus last year New Year, New You Program, a 90-Day Challenge 148.2 pounds lost, as a group 31.5% body fat lost 83 seniors attended the interest meeting, 40 completed the program Field Trips and Activities International Civil Rights Museum Pool Party Valentine Party Arts & Crafts Classes River Run Festival 1 – Day Charleston Trip Health Screenings and Seminars Monthly Nutrition Seminars Diabetic Seminar Bone Density Screening – Novant Health Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Seminar Foot Assessment with Fleet Feet Gateway Youth Programs >> Youth Wellness The Youth Wellness department provides weekly physical education & nutrition education to member and community youth at the Gateway and in local Equity plus schools. 2013 - 2014 Highlights 400 + children and families served Over 1400 Gateway family memberships Redesigned layout of room to maximize space for group classes NEW youth fitness class schedule NEW Nutrition Corner for nutrition education and interactive activities NEW sports/nutrition curricium for Equity plus schools Test-piloted new Childhood Obesity program Healthy cooking classes for youth in partnership with Chef Dickerson Fit Family Potluck encouraging families to cook and eat healthy together Continued success of Girls on the Run program changing lives through youth fitness, sports, and character development Childcare / Girls Inc.
