Editorial
Varsha Pratipada, the spring New Year of India
is here and Sopanam is issuing its last edition of
this issue. We remain thankful to all our readers
and contributors who have stood by us in the last
three years.
Seva Darshan Kuwait has a new team this year
and we hope our editorial team will live up to the
expectation of our readers.
We go through turbulent times. Our national
symbols and values are being trampled upon.
Institutions that are the bedrock of our democracy
are being questioned. Our religious leaders are
being targeted and defiled. An opportunity to
change this presents itself before us in the form
of the National elections to choose a government
that will stand up to the aspirations of the people
of India. It is our opportunity to make our voices
is heard. A chance for us to choose a leader with a
vision. We must encourage our kith and kin to not

The media is playing a major role in the
formation of our opinions on various issues in our
nation. A one sided biased approached in reporting
is being increasingly noticed during this crucial
phase our Nation is going through. It becomes
the moral responsibly of being a journalist that
needs to stands before our personal likings while
reporting so that the people of the Nation are able to
better formulate their views on the various issues.
Financial dealing and benefits must not affect the
outcome of reporting.
A nation unites its self with its language. It is
unknowingly an important part of keeping our
culture and heritage alive. Samskritha Bharati has
been doing the yeoman service of educating the
people in the language and has crossed borders to
ensure all people on Indian roots keep this alive.
Kuwait will also be host to a 10 day Sanskrit
speaking camp in the month of March. All Indians
must take this opportunity to learn this language,
which is the mother of all languages in the world.
As we approach Vishu, Seva Darshan’s unique
‘Vishu Kaineetam’ programmes are getting ready
across Kuwait. The celebrations at every home
will ensure it is shared also along with our needy
brothers and sisters back in India. We wish our
Bala Darshan children all the best in making this
event a roaring success like every other year.
After the hugely successful Yuva For India boot
camp, Yuva Darshan Kuwait is holding its first
follow up session with a vision to encourage our
youngsters to choose scientific research as a career
for their future. We welcome all our participants to
these sessions.
With many programmes being planned
throughout the year, we hope this New Year will be
an opportunity for the Seva Darshan family to put
forward its community service commitment to the
public and encourage everyone to be the change
they want in the community.

Yugaadi- ( Varsha Prathipadha)
and delicious, signify the two conflicting aspects
of human life - joy and sorrow, success and failure,
ecstasy and agony. This tells us that we should
remain calm and balanced during success and
failure, joy and sorrow and take everything as the
gift of God. This in fact is the essence of yoga.
Every one goes to the Temple on the New year's
day. There is Panchanga Shravanam arranged in
the Temples.
The first day of chaitra, the first month in lunar
calendar
The first day of the year according to the
national calendar of Bharat, is significant both for
its historical import and for the advent of bountiful
nature. The day falls in the beginning of spring Vasanta Ritu - When the Goddess of Nature gets
bedecked as a divine bride.
This is celebrated as new year. There is the
air of freshness in the nature as this is the spring
season. In some parts of Bharat, the tender leaves
of neem mixed with jaggery and offered to God
as naivedya and then distributed as prasaada. The
neem, extremely bitter in taste, and jaggery sweet
Historically, the day recalls the inspiring occasion
when the kings Shalivahana and Vikramaditya
defeated the invading barbaric forces of Shakas
from Central Asia during the 1st century A.D.
The founding of new Eras in the names of
Vikrama and Shalivahana signifies the supreme
importance accorded to them in the Bharth history
and tradition for safeguarding the nation's freedom
and sovereignty. As such, the continuing tradition
of the two Eras has helped to keep aglow the spirit
of national freedom in the nation's mind.
Baisaakhi, which follows Yugaadi, is the first
day of the Hindu Solar Year ( 2nd week of April ).
In Punjab and certain other northern parts, it is an
occasion for unbounded religious fervor and mass
participation in festivities.

Awakening Our National Pride

The world greatest symbol of a successful
(almost) democracy will showcase again in a few
days from now when the elections to the Indian
parliament takes place. A record 815 million people
will excise their right to vote.
In 1947, we selected democracy as our model of
government. We found that this was instrumental
in ensuring an equal and unbiased representation
of all the different communities who come from
various regions, caste and language barriers. For
democracy to work requires a set of political
values and ideological orientation. This was readily
available with the Congress Party that was in the
political forefront of the Independence struggle
There is strong relationship between the
democratic process and the economic development
of the country. Likewise there is an equally, if not
stronger, relationship between the power that rules
the nation and the cultural and moral foundations
of that nation.
Various writers and thinkers have criticized the
functioning of the state and the bureaucracy at
various times. But almost all of them would agree
that the current process is so far the most effective
way of ensuring all the citizens get an equal share
in electing their leader of choice.
We are a ‘Nation’ rather than a country. Hence
the word ‘Rashtram’ has a very close meaning to
our nation’s functioning. This cannot be effectively
described in the western concept of a democracy.
A standard interpretation is that a Nation is a State.
But a State is a physical description of a land with
fixed boundaries when people live together and
are administered by a selected group of people

according to pre-defined laws and regulations.
A Nation is formed by a group of people who
have a rich legacy of memories and desire to live
together and continue to receive and cherish their
rich heritage. Common race, language or simply
a unity in interests is not enough to create such
a group of people. Nationality is sentiment for
national literature, heroes, geniuses, language,
sentiments, traditions and modes of dress it is a
feeling that goes beyond definition.
The people of India by and large have a common
cultural language and share common literature that
regulates and governs their life even in minute
details. Their outlook is different from any of
the people in the world. In spite of superficial
differences the people across the nation have a
common basis for their magnificent architecture,
painting, dancing and several other art forms.
The people of India have been procession of
this land for 8000 years and more. Our western
education would probably refute our claims and tell
us of events of Kingdoms with India fighting each
other. They have also laid claim saying that the
invaders united the country called India today. At a
time when our nation was writing philosophies and
having an organized society the so called invaders
were wanderers and nomads. The Vedas proclaim,
“And we were one nation –‘over all the land from
sea to sea one kingdom!’
In our quest to form a perfect democratic state,
successive governments have forgotten to preserve
the foundations of our National Consciousness,
and our nationhood. While we argue that for a
Nation to survive it must have a land, we have seen

many communities like the Jews and Parisis who
lost their land due to invasions still working as a
community to retain their individuality communal
spirit. In our nation religion is all encompassing.
Culture is simply a product of religion. The
common argument that religion should have no
place in public and political life stems out of some
western ideas which consider religions as dogmas
forced upon people. This may be true for some
nations and communities. But the same need not be
enforced in our nation. When religion is considered
as beneficial only to the individual that follows it,
it will have no space in a national dialogue. But
when religion itself is considered the foundation of
a Nation, it has a much bigger role. In our nation,
religion regulates the society and all its functions.
So the nation concept includes country, race,
religion, culture, and language. And it requires
each of the five in a homogeneous whole. When
one goes, extinction is a possibility.
When religion is forcefully separated, morality
takes a fall. This is evident in the present day state
of affairs in our nation. Crime and corruption is
becoming the disease that is eating into our nation.
The society has to be awakened from its state of
non-reaction to what is happening around them.
They seem to have lost hope. Our education system

has been evolved to become counterproductive
and have instilled a feeling of defeat amongst the
new generation. Various alternative options open
up before us as a reaction to these negatives vibes
being felt all over the country. It is surely a welcome
change to see the younger generation of our Nation
more active these days in discussions and having a
proactive approach to the goodwill of the nation.
Along with this radical change comes the threat of
a philosophy that does not heed to the basic nature
of a Nation. It believes that direct action alone can
forcefully achieve in a short span of time whatever
illness has crept into the society. These results in
massive unrest triggering and social and criminal
disorder in the state. We must ensure these types
of tendencies are not tolerated just to defeat social
evils without actually eliminating the root causes
completely from our system.
This anarchist type of mentality stands to destroy
the culture of Nation that has not been shaken by
countless invasions and fraudulent conversion
tactics. Ours is a Nation that has shown generosity,
tolerance, sacrifice and love for all living beings.
Our culture and heritage has produced great
scientists, philosophers, economists and artists.
We must not try to enforce a modern concept of
State on our Nation that has been in existence from
time immemorial. We need governance that will
truly work for the development and advancement of
the Nation on the whole. In spite of the differences
in race, language and religion, our development
model must be for the upliftment of the Nation
and not confined to few minorities, ‘Swaraj’ means
independence, the power of the National Race. To
be full it should have a scientific frontier and be
richly productive. “Race” means that persons, who
have a common origin and common fellow feeling,
i.e. are related together by common traditions and
naturally by common aspiration. We must be proud

of being of the ‘Bharateeyan’ race and must work
together for the advancement of the race and its
concepts throughout the world. The invaders,
who realized the danger of the people of Bharat
developing a sense of a united race, systematically
stamped out the qualities that attributed to this
feeling. Hence our text books are filled with ideas
of a conquered race, our common languages have
been divided and our people divided on the basis
of language. They saw to it that people of different
religion that began to live together after years of
war and distrust was further divided by way of
benefits and other provisions. The Indian National
Congress which was born out of the people’s dissent
soon became a party to the British aspiration to
destroy the Nation. And they do so till today. They
have been following the policies of the British and
have forced the people to believe that wealth and
military power is what matters in the world. They

have de-cultured and de-nationalized our people.
The “lack of the National sentiment of the
right sort, is the root of our troubles. We are being
provided an opportunity to choose what is right for
our Nation and we must express our desire by the
power of the ballot. It becomes our duty to ensure
every citizen exercises this right to choose what
is much needed for our Nation today – A class of
leaders who stand to make our Nation proud and
will sacrifice their life for the upliftment of our
Nation.
We do not despair of the future. The race spirit
has prevented our destruction in the past and shall
do so again in the future. Other nations have had
their day and left, not Hindusthan. Today we see
a national awakening under great leaders. Let us
rouse ourselves!

Legislating two children
norm in India
The Kerala Law Commission headed by Justice
V.R. Krishna Iyer described the importance of
every Indian citizen adopting two children family
norm and recommended the need for bringing in
laws to enforce the same. Some sections of the
people and some organizations had expressed
their reservations on said recommendation and are
openly campaigning against it.
The concept of having two children in the family
is not something new to the Indian system. The
menace of growing populations had been judicially
noticed and the constitutional validity of legislative
means to check the population was upheld by the
Indian Constitutional Courts.
The Honorable Supreme Court of India has
considered the issue in a case where an Air Hostess
was terminated from service for the reason that she
gave birth to a third child. While upholding such
employment termination decision, the Honorable
court held that when the whole world is faced with
the problem of population explosion, it will not only
be desirable but absolutely essential for India to see
that the family planning program is maintained at
sufficient levels in order to address the danger of
over-population.
It is a fact that certain religions permit their
believers to to procreate as many children as they
want. But no religion in India dictates or mandates
the same as an obligation. What is permitted or not
prohibited by a religion does not become a religious
practice or a positive tenet of a religion and a
practice does not acquire the sanction of religion
simply because it is permitted by religion.

Indian Constitution protects is the religious faith
and not the religious practices. If the religious
practices run counter to public order, then the same
should be prohibited by enacting appropriate laws.
Sati, animal sacrifice, child marriage and dowry
were such practices followed by different religious
groups and on the ground of morality and social
welfare policies, those practices were prohibited
through the enactment of appropriate laws.
India has the discredit of being second only to
China at the top of the list of 10 most populated
countries in the world. The National Planning
Committee set up by our former Prime Minister
Jawaharlal Nehru considered “Family Planning
and Limitation of Children” essential for the
interests of social economy, family happiness and
national planning. The Committee recommended
the establishment of birth control clinics and other
necessary measures such as raising the age of
marriage and a eugenic sterilization program.
A private Bill named “Two-child norm bill”,
which was introduced in the RajyaSabha on 3rd
May, 2010 for providing population control and
for matters connected therewith has not been
taken up for consideration until now. Considering
the importance of such a Bill and as responsible
citizens of India, each of us should bring up this
issue to the public domain for a healthy debate so
that the next Government of India should take up
this critical issue in the best interest of the Nation.
A sharp distinction must be drawn between

But they have many fundamental questions in their
mind. This article is prepared in a question and
answer format by visualizing the type of questions

What Scientists do?
 They work for making innovations and
inventions.

You will invent and innovate.
 You will do new type of work almost
everyday; Hence work will not be boring.

You are respected by the community.
 You will be respected around the work for
your noticeable innovation.

What is innovation? Why invention and
innovation?
 You will get chances to go around the
world
 Invention of new product, process, knowhow which is useful for the development, which
are marketable
 You will be working and interacting most of
the time with intellectuals
 The innovative scientists do for cost
reduction, time saving, risk reduction, improvement
of life style etc.
Is everything around me is due to innovation
by some Scientist?
Yes. For example:
 The mobile phones of today are completely
different from those we used few years back due to
innovations
 The modern aircraft we use today is because
of innovations by many Aerospace scientists
 Many medicines are invented for diseases
(which we thought non-curable) and are cheaper
due to new products invented by pharmaceutical
scientists
Can one become Scientist in any field?
 Yes. You can be a Scientist in any discipline
like any Science, Arts, Engineering, Medicine,
etc.
 Every field needs improvement because
people need quality life at affordable cost
Does Research have an end?

No. It will keep going.
What is the motivation for me to become a
Scientist?

Not really
 But a person with Ph.D. knows (In general),
how to do research work systematically.

 Because, I do not really know how to

 But I wanted to do Ph.D. later in my life

A few
grains of
rice
This story is about a great Saint called Ramana
Maharshi. One day, as Ramana Maharshi was
strolling in his Ashram, he noticed a few grains
of rice lying on the ground near the kitchen. He
immediately started collecting all the grains. Seeing
that the Saint was carefully picking up the few
grains, His devotees were surprised and gathered
around Him. They could not believe that the great
Saint, who had left His home and worldly ties for
the sake of God, cared so much for a few grains of
rice. Finally, one of His devotees had the courage
to ask Him, Gurudēv, we have many bags of rice in
the kitchen. Why do you take the trouble to pick up
these few grains?"
The Saint replied, "You see only these few
grains of rice, but try to see what has gone into these
grains. The hard work of the farmer, whoploughed
the field and sowed the seeds, the water of the ocean,
the clouds and the rain, the cool air and the warm
sunshine, the soft soil and the rice plants. All these
have gone into these grains. If you understand this,
you will see the hand of God in every grain. So, do
not waste them or crush them under your feet. If you
do not want to eat them, give them to the birds."
Moral: How many times do we waste things like
water, food, paper, etc., that we feel are unimportant!
Next time before wasting things or not taking care
of what we have, we can remember this story and
see the presence of God in all creation.
Fear is death, fear is sin, fear is hell, fear is unrighteousness, fear is
wrong life. All the negative thoughts and ideas that are in the world
have proceeded from this evil spirit of fear.
All the powers in the universe are already ours. It is we who have put our
hands before our eyes and cry that it is dark.
