www.hortla.okstate.edu Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Oklahoma State University The department was very pleased and proud to host distinguished alumnus Paul Redman for a full two days on campus in early October. Paul is Executive Director of Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Considered one of the world’s great gardens, Longwood encompasses more than 1,000 acres and welcomes over 1.1 million visitors per year! Paul was very gracious with his time as he worked with design students, had discussions with faculty and administrators, toured The Botanic Garden and met with Garden volunteers, and delivered a public lecture to a large audience. Mr. Redman shared many valuable insights, including the importance of raising awareness of the numerous opportunities in horticultural professions. After growing up in McAlester, OK, Paul received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Horticulture from OSU, and he is very grateful for the people and experiences that influenced him during his time in Stillwater. Paul invites all OSU alumni and friends to visit Longwood Gardens, a place of incredible beauty and inspiration. Moesel is president and co-owner of American Plant Products and Services in Oklahoma City. In addition to serving the needs of countless commercial growers, his company has designed and built research greenhouses for university and federal facilities across the United States, and has constructed teaching greenhouses for more than 50 Oklahoma-based vocational agriculture programs. “Rodd Moesel’s service to Oklahoma’s agriculture and horticulture industries is quite incredible in terms of its breadth, depth and longevity,” said Ron Elliott, interim head of DASNR’s department of horticulture and landscape architecture. “He is a civic-minded individual who has literally helped shape dozens of organizations.” For the entire story visit the website: http://www.hortla.okstate.edu/moesel-champion J.D. “Scotty” Scott Horticulture Research Endowed Professorship Thank you to everyone who donated to create the Professorship and a special thanks to Dwayne Scott for the generous donation to meet the $250 million goal. The Professorship will be named in honor of Dwayne’s father. We would also like to recognize Paul and Maxine Haydon for their contributions to establish this fund and their annual donations. The endowment is now a little over $1,000,000 since receiving a 3:1 match from T. Boone Pickens and Oklahoma. Interest from this endowment will fund research on pecans, enhance the salary of the person holding the Professorship and a portion of the interest will be returned to the principal to offset inflation. An appointment to the Endowed Professorship is considered a prestigious position and with the salary enhancement and research funds it should attract the best and brightest candidates. With the Professorship established, it ensures that future donations added to this endowment will also receive a 3:1 match and will generate additional funds to support research. If you would like to contribute to this worthy endeavor send your check to Michael Smith, Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK 74078. The check must be made out to the OSU Foundation. A special thanks to those individuals and businesses contributing to the Horticulture Research Professorship. This past spring, students in Assistant Professor Nick Nelson’s Landscape Architecture course (Studio 3) engaged in an exciting project with 3rd graders from Sangre Ridge Elementary School in Stillwater. The project was entered into the national “Come Alive Outside” competition and was named as the first place winner. The Landscape Architecture students produced an Idea Resource Book to highlight their ideas and creativity for the project. A Coloring Book was also developed as an additional way to connect the elementary students to the project. Be sure to watch this short video that was part of the submission for the competition: http://vimeo. com/89302782. Students worked on the project for about a month then presented to a panel of judges in Fort Collins, Colorado on March 19. Studio 3 students presenting the project were Jimi Underwood, Haley Dugger, Rita Woodson and Corey Branch. The “Come Alive Outside” Movement was founded by Jim Paluch in 2010 in response to the sedentary, indoor lifestyle that is contributing to a multitude of adverse effects in our society. The movement appeals to individuals, families, businesses and communities to start finding ways to encourage one another back into the great outdoors. To learn more about the “Come Alive Outside” campaign, visit the website: http://comealiveoutside.com/what-is-this/. 3 Horticulture and Landscape Architecture William McGlynn In July William McGlynn was awarded the Virgil and Marge Jurgensmeyer Research Professorship in Product Development. The three year professorship encourages excellence in product development, research and scholarship in the Food and Agricultural Products Center. In the last 17 years McGlynn has directed his research studies in the areas of quality improvement in Oklahoma wines; grape processing waste; value-added peanut products; value-added produce and fruit products specifically in the areas of blackberries, watermelon and pecans. Endowed Professorships Justin Q. Moss Justin Q. Moss was awarded the Wayne W. and Jean Huffine Professorship in Turfgrass Science in July of 2014. He has played an integral role in DASNR’s comprehensive multidisciplinary interdepartmental turfgrass team. Moss has been highly successful in recruiting graduate students into the turfgrass field as well as securing extramural funding. His research efforts have focused on urban turfgrass environments including urban water quality, use, and conservation, turfgrass plant physiology, and sustainable turfgrass management while extension activities focus on relaying information to industry, extension educators, governmental decision makers, and the public. Michael Schnelle The Charles and Linda Shackelford Professorship in Floriculture was awarded to Michael Schnelle on July 1, 2014. Schnelle has developed educational workshops and programs supporting the ornamental horticulture and floriculture industries as well as providing educational programs for extension educators, the public and students. He is a liaison between the university and multiple industry organizations as well as working in conjunction with other faculty to develop and update educational publications and materials and securing extramural funding to support extension programs. The Garden Concert Series was a huge success and continued to gain numbers in attendance. Visit botanicgarden.okstate.edu for more information on events and future concerts held at The Botanic Garden. 4 www.hortla.okstate.edu Water Conservation on the Road Top: Rain Barrel Workshop on July 10 at the Myriad Botanical Garden. Publications can be purchased on-line at: http://www.hortla.okstate.edu/marketplace In 2013, the Oklahoma State University Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service partnered with the Oklahoma City Water Utilities Trust to help promote outdoor water conservation through teaching, research and extension. The project team has focused on educating homeowners, landscape installation companies, and golf course and sports field managers through publications, workshops and demonstrations. Additionally, two of five outdoor demonstration gardens have been completed and are located at the Myriad Botanical Gardens and OSU-OKC. Three other gardens are planned for the OKC Zoo, Bluff Creek and Woodson Parks. Team members continue to participate and teach at homeowner association meetings, home and garden shows, Master Gardener trainings and water conservation workshops. Publications including the Drought-Tolerant Plant Selections for Oklahoma guidebook (E-1037) and A Guide to Saving Water in the Home Landscape (E-1038) were created and are used at homeowner workshops. 5 Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Students in Lou Anella’s 2013 Spring Applied Landscape Planning class designed a garden for the Stillwater Edwin Fair Clinic to be installed in the back corner of their parking lot – on top of the pavement! The 2013 Fall Herbaceous Plants class students installed the garden and completed the project. They constructed raised beds from recycled wooden pallets, installed micro irrigation in each bed, and installed a paver pathway through the center of the design. Students replanted the beds with plants donated by the PLANET and Horticulture Clubs again during the 2014 spring semester. Strawberries, herbs and a healthy crop of tomatoes were grown for guests and staff. Last fall’s Autumn Nights Concert Series was such a hit, we decided to try it again but in May and September! Musical groups included a little rhythm and blues with Moetowne Alex and the Nightview Band, some jazz with Carlton 5 and concluded on May 16 with the Red Dirt Rangers. Artists from the September Concert Series included The Tequila Songbirds, Jared Tyler Band and Kyle Reid and The Low Swinging Chariots. Both concert series were well attended and enjoyed by all. In July, a “Garden Design in Harmony with Local Ecology” course was taught by Cheryl Mihalko in Taos, New Mexico. Natural landscapes were analyzed and interpreted to isolate garden elements: local color, texture, form, material and native plants. Environmental aspects of place relating to design form and expression were learning topics for the session. Other activities included field trips and a local site project for the students. Dr. Mike Schnelle lectured for an international group of students and faculty from Facultad de Zootecnia y Ecologia de la UACH, Chihuahua, Mexico on July 24. Schnelle’s lecture was entitled Organic, Nearly-Organic and IPM Production Possibilities for the Ornamentals Industry. He not only addressed these issues and how they pertain to Oklahoma growers but also discussed how they could be applied in Mexico or elsewhere in the world. Schnelle had previously lectured at the University of Chihuahua in 2004. 6 www.hortla.okstate.edu On July 11 , Dr. Justin Scheiner, Viticulturist at Texas A&M spoke about grape berry ripening issues as the guest speaker for the Advanced Viticulture Workshops. Scheiner provides educational programming and technical support for grape growers in the Gulf Coast Region and North Texas. Advanced Viticulture and Enology Workshops For more than a dozen years, Oklahoma State has offered a Grape Management Course to those individuals who have an established vineyard or to those who are just getting into the industry. Due to the popularity of the course, grape growers in the area now have a chance to expand their knowledge by attending a series of educational opportunities called the Advanced Viticulture and Enology Training Workshops. “There are various issues and concerns in the grape industry, including the economy and even the weather,” said Becky Carroll. “Although we aren’t seeing the rapid growth in wineries and acreage of grapes planted compared to a number of years ago, we’re seeing steady improvements in grape growing and wine making expertise. Oklahoma currently has about 600 acres dedicated to the grape industry.” Because of these improvements, Carroll said she is excited to see these advanced workshops available to grape growers. She said this new workshop will pick up where the Grape Management Course ended. The workshops are made available by a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce through the Oklahoma Viticulture and Enology Fund. Thus far guest speakers have included Keith Striegler, Flint Ridge Wine Growing Services from Fayetteville, Arkansas and Dr. Justin Scheiner, Viticulturist at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in College Station, Texas. October 10 is the next scheduled workshop with guest speaker Dr. Bruce Bordelon from Purdue University. The workshops are held at the Cimarron Valley Research Station, 10820 S. Jardot in Perkins. Contact Stephanie by email or call 405-744-5404 to register. This summer started out drier than usual for April and May here in Stillwater, but significant rainfall occurred in June and about every two weeks thereafter. The typical hot conditions were not seen this summer with two uncharacteristic dips in the jet stream bringing in cooler weather; however, some heat was experienced near the end of summer. Plants that performed well this year included the Supertunia® Petunia selections (‘Mini Rose Veined (Imp)’, ‘Black Cherry’, ‘Morning Glory Charm’, and ‘Limoncello’). All Petunia cultivars had profuse blooming throughout the summer. Pennisetum Graceful Grasses® ‘Sky Rocket’ performed well this year. Pennisetum Graceful Grasses® ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Fireworks’ were not evaluated this year, but did receive top marks last year. Two other plants performing well this summer were Calibrachoa hybrid Superbells® ‘Frostfire’ and Scaevola hybrid ‘Pink Wonder’™. New this year were Viola x wittrockiana Anytime® series cultivars ‘Sugarplum’, ‘Sunlight’, ‘Dove’, and ‘Quartz’, which initially performed well, but died out in July in full sun. Every site and year brings out challenges for the plants. So, although some of the selections may not have performed well at my site this summer under minimal inputs, plant evaluations are often done over multiple years and multiple trial sites. I can say with some certainty that if the plants do perform well in my trial, that they would probably do even better in your flower beds. Your local garden center may or may not carry a particular selection, so I suggest that you phone first or visit the Proven Winners® website at http://www. provenwinners.com/ to find the nearest retailer. 39th Annual Awards Program August 23, 2014 Distinguished Horticulture Service Merlin Schantz Distinguished Horticulture Alumnus Mark West Distinguished Landscape Architecture Alumnus John Ritter Margaret Romshe Outstanding Undergraduate Student Courtney DeKalb Franklin A. Although I never had the chance to meet him, I know that living up to his legacy would be quite a feat.” The scholarship was made possible by the Toro Giving Program. The American Horticultural Society (AHS) awarded Dr. Shelley Mitchell the 2014 Jane L. Taylor Award on Thursday, June 5 at Alexandria, Virginia. This honor is one of 12 Great American Gardeners’ Awards the Society presents each year to outstanding people and organizations who have made a significant difference in the horticultural world. The Jane L. Taylor Award is given to an individual, organization or program that has inspired and nutured future horticulturists through efforts in children’s and youth gardening and thus recognized Mitchell’s tireless efforts in developing camps and programs to educate youth on career options while exploring various aspects of horticulture.
