From the Relieving Principal’s desk
We would also like to say thank you to Ms Jaclyn Thompson and a
group of Year 9 PASS students from Heathcote High School who
enthusiastically assisted us on the day of our Athletics Carnival.
Their help was invaluable.
It’s Showtime! The excitement is building and the anticipation for our
whole school musical tomorrow at Sutherland Entertainment Centre
is tangible. The students and teachers have all worked extremely
hard as a team to bring you this extravaganza. Danger Kids or
Where the Heck is Carmen San Francisco? is an entertaining show
that features every student at our school. Carmen San Francisco is
an evil villain who is attempting to take over all video games. All
other special agents have failed in their quest to find this scoundrel
so the Danger Kids are on the case! If you haven’t done so already I
urge you to buy tickets and join us tomorrow. I am incredibly proud of
our school community who have again demonstrated what can be
achieved if we work together.
Thank you
At a recent P&C meeting I presented a small token of our
appreciation for the generous donations that our school community
have made towards the renovation of our school library. The library is
nearing completion but staff and students wanted to express their
thanks for all the work everyone has done so far. Students wrote
poems, drew pictures and created other masterpieces to show their
gratitude. A sample of the class thank you notes is below.
As I outlined at the meeting, whether it be all the children and
families who contributed to fundraising efforts, those that picked up a
paintbrush or assisted in any other way you have contributed to
make our vision for 21st Century learning space for our students a
reality. As Helen Keller once said – “Álone we can do so little;
together we can do so much”. Thank you!
These students along with the Year 10 students from Inaburra
School, who meticulously planned the carnival, will be presented with
certificates of appreciation in the near future. Thank you to all
involved.
Student Spotlight
Congratulations to Hayley C who has been selected in the Sydney
East Regional Softball Team. Your school is proud of you!
Well done to Aidan R. who was selected in the Engadine/Sutherland
Zone Cricket Team and now moves to the next round of trials for the
Boys Sydney East Region Cricket team at the Sydney Cricket
Ground. Good Luck!
All the best to Bianca who is also trialling for the Girls Sydney East
Region Cricket team.
Mr Noble and Mrs Steed report that our students gave 100 per cent
effort at the Zone Athletics Carnival held at Sylvania last week. All
students should be proud of themselves with many achieving
personal bests. Congratulations to Summer, Bailey, Torin and Kobey
who have progressed through to Regional level. Well done!
‘Read In’
This week is Book Week. The theme for Book Week this year is
‘Australia - Story Country’. To mark this event in an already busy
week we will be holding a ‘Read In’. This Thursday all students are
asked to bring their favourite story to school along with a towel or
similar to sit on. We will all venture over to the school playground for
a ‘book picnic’ where we will share our chosen texts with each other.
Our Year 6 students will be assisting their Kindergarten buddies
during this activity. In case of wet weather the Read In will be held in
the school hall. A note about the Read In has been put on Skoolbag
today.

K-2 Athletics Carnival
Everyone is invited for a morning of fun when the K-2 Athletics
Carnival is held on Friday 2 September on our school oval. Children
in Kindergarten and Year 1 will run in their age race followed by a
tabloid of challenging and enjoyable activities. Year 2 will join in the
tabloid activities. We are looking forward to sharing the morning with
parents, carers and special friends.

Mr Purkiss has received the following email from Jocelyn Fortuno,
Principal of Bacao Elementary school in regards to the last lot of
books we shipped off in June.
“Dear Bill
Thank you once again for the books and hope to see you this year
when you visit the Philippines. The books will be very timely for the
reading program we have since the k12 curriculum had not given
good result to the literacy of our learners. I don’t know where the
problem lies but I think the curriculum had been so easy and the
learners were not forced to read in the kinder and grade one. And
English is only introduced in the second quarter that focus on oral
fluency only. Unlike the BEC or the Basic Education Curriculum it is
obligatory for the grade one teachers for the learners to be readers
upon completion of the level. Well the achievement test for grade
three and six yields no good results. But we hope that some
polishing and revision of the curriculum would be better to have a
better outcome.

STEM Education
In Australia, fifteen per cent of the working age population have a

President’s Report
The last two weeks have seen lots of excitement at the school with
all the children practising for the musical "Danger Kids". I am really
looking forward to seeing it this week.
I know how much effort has been put into the musical from all the
children & staff at the school.
At our last P&C meeting Mrs Stolk presented the P&C with thank you
cards from all of the classes in the school for all the hard work you
have all done in fundraising to upgrade our library. I have put all the
drawings up on the uniform shop door, if you get a chance please go
and have a look. Thank you to all the children in the school for your
beautiful work.

With Spring not too far away we are preparing the uniform shop for
the warmer weather.
We have a range of sizes available with plenty more on the way.

well. We still accept cash and cheques in the uniform shop during
opening hours or place your order in the Uniform slot of the money

School Banking Prize Lights competition running in Term 3. Simply
make three or more school banking deposits during Term 3 for a
chance to win one of the Star Saver prizes, including camping kits,
instant camers and magzine packs. In adition you could help the
school win a sports pack!

Fundraising Report
Notes have gone home regarding the purchase of ride
wristbands. The actual wristbands will be sent home the week of the
fete. They will be $25 each and they are for unlimited rides between
9.00am and 3.00pm on the day. Individual ride tickets will be able to
be purchased on the day with rides costing either $5 or $8 each.
If you wish to purchase for friends outside school or younger siblings
that is fine just order how many you require under your child’s name
and that quantity will be sent home with your child.
Banners have been put up advertising our fete and the posters
designed by Ruby and Mia are up in local shops. The Leader has
been emailed and the event is on the ‘Shire Kids” calendar too. If you
have a workplace that could put up a poster please see me for one!
What’s more if you complete the Stargazing activity onine, along with
your three or more school banking deposits, you’ll also have the
chance to win one of thee Supernova przes – PlayStation 4 packs.

Bike to the Beach
Fitness and Fun for the family
Sunday 18 September 2016
Bring the family down for a great 5km ride from Woolooware Bay to Wanda beach. The
supervised off-road course along off-road paths is easily managed by all ages. Volunteers
will be on hand to assist at crossing points and will help young riders collect progress
stamps along the way.
At the conclusion of the free ride, all registered riders will enjoy a free hotdog, snake
and reptile show, kid’s tattoos, face painting, Sutherland PCYC Concert Band, inflatable
amusements, giveaways and “Pass the Ball” with local Sharks players.

Heathcote East OSHC- ALLERGY AWARENESS
Throughout our centre we have a number of children with life threatening allergies to various forms of food, latex, dust, cats and
insect stings. This is a serious matter, one that our centre must address.
Some children have allergies that are so severe that smells or touch could trigger a reaction.
In order to do this we appeal to all parents to assist us in caring for these children by considering the type of foods you pack for your
own child’s morning tea / afternoon tea and lunch. Our aim is to minimise the amount of peanut and tree nut products brought
into the centre. These foods are extremely dangerous to our children with allergies and cause 50% of food allergic deaths. Common
foods that trigger an allergic reaction are listed below and we ask you to refrain from sending them to OOSH and to seek suitable
alternatives.

OOSH does not provide any of these products. In the case of a child bringing a nut product to OOSH, the staff will bring the matter
to the attention of parents. There are many foods that DO NOT contain peanuts or nuts in their ingredients list, but the food
package has the statement “May contain traces of dairy, nut or seed”. This food may be brought to OOSH and consumed only by
non-allergic children. Due to safety and concerns, we discourage children from sharing food and drink. We would also appreciate
parents speaking to their children regarding this matter. Your child’s diet at home need not change. Below is a list of foods that are
safe for you to choose from. We’re sure you can think of many others.

Enrolment Fee:
You will need to contact the centre to book your child in.
Permission and booking forms may be collected from the centre,
emailed to you, or downloaded from our website or Facebook
page.
Vacation Care fees MUST be paid for AT THE TIME OF BOOKING
Bookings will not be confirmed until payment is made.

Please email a copy of your payment receipt to the centre.
Payments can also be made via Cash and/or Cheque but no
change can be given. Cash and Cheque payments need to be
placed in an envelope and clearly marked with your child’s name
and the dates you wish to pay for. Envelopes are then placed in
the bright red fee’s box next to the sign in/sign out sheets.
Full Day Fees:
$42.00 per child, booked BEFORE (Two weeks prior to Program
start)
$45.00 per child booked AFTER (Any time after program has
commenced)
** No refunds given for absences**
Enrolment Fees are a one off fee charged every 12 months.
Most families pay the first time they use or attend the Centre
each year.
$30.00 charged once within a calendar year if you have used
the centre in previous years.
$50.00 is charged for families who are using the centre for the
very first time.

Full Day
7.00am to 6.00pm
Other information
Please note: It is preferred that no technology (iPad, iPods, DS, etc.)
is brought to the Centre, however if it is, children will need to switch
off the devices by 9am every morning, and will be put away by staff.
Children will be given their items back, on request, after 5.00pm (or
when they are collected) Heathcote East Vacation Care takes take no
responsibility for any forms of technology brought to the center.

alternate option.
