Royal Official Opening of the new Whiston Hospital 24th April 2013 The Trust was privileged to welcome HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO to commemorate the official opening of the new Whiston Hospital. The event marked the completion of the redevelopment and building of the new Whiston Hospital. During the visit, The Countess met patients, staff and volunteers and visited a number of wards and departments within the hospital. The photographs below represent the story of Her Royal Highnesses visit to Whiston Hospital. HRH The Countess of Wessex arrives at Whiston Hospital. Escorted by the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside Dame Lorna Muirhead, she is introduced to the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, the High Sheriff of Merseyside and the Mayor and Mayoress of Knowsley. HRH meets staff at the main entrance of the hospital. Clinical staff chats with the Countess HRH is introduced to Les Howell, Chairman of the Trust HRH is introduced to Ann Marr, Chief Executive The Countess is shown the NHS sign on Level 1, Whiston Hospital, which shows in pictures the journey from the old Victorian workhouse/ hospital building to the state of the art facilities of the new Whiston Hospital. The Countess meets Consultant Obstetrician Tennyson Idama and Ward Manager Carol Deveney on the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). HRH spends time cuddling one of the newest arrivals on the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) baby Eve Carmichael. The Countess looks at baby Amelia Connolly in the incubator with mum Natalie Connolly on SCBU. HRH chats with the family of baby Eve Carmichael, joined by Tennyson Idama, Caroline Deveney and Ann Marr. The Countess talks to a patient Sheila Daintith on Ward 3Alpha The Countess chats with patient Jeremiah O’Sullivan and staff on Ward 3Alpha HRH meets patient John Barker and his granddaughter Amy in the Prosthetics Department. The Countess inspects various types of prosthetics with Principal Burns and Plastic Surgery Prosthetist Elaine Goldsworthy and Paul McArthur Consultant Plastic Surgeon Elaine Goldsworthy and Paul McArthur discuss patient prosthetics, explain how they are made and benefits to patients with The Countess. The Countess speaks with patient Jodie Webster on Ward 3F, Children and Young People’s Ward. The Countess discusses teddy bears with patient FFion Davies, aged 2 on Ward 3F The Countess greets Elspeth Worthington, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Kate Langley, Ward Manager, Joanne Watkinson, Radiographer, Diana Lewis, HR Business partner and Sue Spooner, Domestic at Whiston Hospital. HRH talks with Diana Lewis, HR Business Partner, John Barton, Charge Nurse and Peter Williams, Consultant. The Countess shares a joke with the Volunteers Dorothy Williamson, Patricia Hall, Norman Holden, Sheila Hepke, Phyllis Haigh and Christine Howard at Whiston Hospital. Ann Marr, Chief Executive gave a speech at the Official Opening of the new Whiston Hospital, talking of the progress the Trust has made since Whiston old Victorian workhouse/ hospital building to the state of the art facilities of the new Whiston Hospital. The Countess thanks staff and patients at Whiston Hospital for the warm reception she received and congratulates the Trust on the world class facilities provided at the hospital. The Countess unveils the plaque with Ann Marr, Chief Executive. The Countess signs the hospitals Visitors Book in the company of Ann Marr, Chief Executive HRH The Countess of Wessex receives a posy of flowers from Whiston Hospital born Grace Walker-Reid, aged 4 to thank her for visiting the Trust and performing the official opening ceremony. HRH The Countess of Wessex leaves the hospital after a successful visit that was thoroughly enjoyed by staff and patients.
