We want to hear from you! Email us at [email protected] CELEBRATING OUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY MESSAGE FROM SIR FRED GOLLOP, CHAIRMAN, ONE CARIBBEAN MEDIA LTD TEN years ago agreement was reached between Caribbean Communications Network Limited (CCN) of Trinidad and Tobago and The Nation Corporation of Barbados to merge and create a regional public media company under the name of One Caribbean Media Limited to be quoted on the Stock Exchanges of Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. It is important to reflect on the origin of the relationship between the Barbados and Trinidad companies. In 1973 the founders of the Nation decided to start a weekly newspaper in Barbados commencing in November in that year. Premises in Bridgetown had been located, a small staff had been recruited and advertising had been booked for the opening day. Regrettably the printing press, purchased in Trinidad, was mysteriously damaged beyond repair on the docks of Port of Spain a few weeks before the first issue was to have been printed. The Nation turned to the Express and its visionary Chief Executive Ken Gordon for the printing of its weekly issue. Thus began a relationship between the two corporate entities which has now lasted for more than 40 years. In fact the relationship blossomed so that from 1998 the two companies held shares in each other, resulting in a cross holding by 2001 of 20 per cent each and cross representation on the Boards of Directors. The leaders of the companies had long shared a common vision for the creation of a Caribbean-owned media company with an independent editorial voice serving Caribbean readers, viewers and advertisers both in the region and worldwide. A fundamental aspect of the merger agreement was that editorial control and product output of the Trinidad and Barbados media would remain under the exclusive authority and control of the respective national entities in the relevant countries. This was meant to underscore the absolute commitment to maintaining strong national brand identities and to preserve the underpinning philosophy which gave rise to the creation of the two institutions. That ethos continues to this day. The directors of OCM, conscious of the challenges in the media industry and in an effort to enhance shareholder value has, in recent years, supported a strategy of investment in diverse enterprises. In particular, the Group has expanded its PAGE 2 | JANUARY - MARCH 2016 digital footprint as it pursues New Media initiatives across our existing electronic platforms. We have also enlarged our radio network and made other selective investments. OCM takes this opportunity to pay special tribute to all those who have contributed to the growth and development of OCM, especially our media personnel who continue to make an important contribution to our societies and the region. I also thank our more than 700 employees across the group and our readers, listeners and advertisers. I am pleased to add that the loyalty and support of our shareholders has been an inspiration to management and the Board of Directors. Sir Fred Gollop, Q.C. Chairman DAWN THOMAS GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, ONE CARIBBEAN MEDIA LTD I joined the OCM team just about eight years ago in the position of Chief Executive Officer, Caribbean Communications Network Ltd and was appointed to the position of Group Chief Executive Officer, One Caribbean Media Ltd (OCM) in January 2011. Working with the OCM team has been an extremely rewarding experience for me since the core of what we do connects with me both on an emotional and spiritual level. What I particularly love about this Group is the relentless commitment consistently demonstrated to the principles associated with operating a free press and the public’s right to know. I sincerely believe that it is this commitment and sense of responsibility that have allowed the Group’s media assets to attain and hold leadership positions across all media platforms and achieve financial strength and success over the years. As I reflect on this important milestone, I must make mention of my admiration and gratitude for the tremendous contribution made by so many special individuals in shaping the OCM Group. Craig Reynald (former OCM, CEO) now retired would have played a critical role in enabling the merger of CCN and Former CEO, Craig Reynald, left with Sir Fred Gollop, Q.C., Chairman the Nation Group to be a reality. Additionally, individuals such as Ken Gordon, Harold Hoyte and Sir Fred Gollop would have played invaluable roles in building the CCN and The Nation Groups into the great institutions they are presently. Without these great regional visionary leaders and many others, OCM would not be the outstanding regional player it is today. The OCM Group was founded on legendary brands such as the Express, Nation, CCN TV6 and the Starcom Radio Network however since the merger 10 years ago, we have managed to add Dawn Thomas Group Chief Executive Officer a number of great media brands and started the journey of selective diversification. In 2006, OCM was comprised 9 brands, 10 years later we can boast of having 20 brands. The Group appreciates that it is part of the Caribbean community and has demonstrated its commitment to building a better regional space through the promotion and spearheading of many initiatives in areas which include education and health. We are very humbled and grateful for the tremendous support that we have received from the public that we serve, our employees, advertisers, shareholders and all the other stakeholders and will strive always to live up to and surpass their expectations. I am most definitely richly blessed and proud to have this opportunity to lead this great regional Group at this time, to work alongside team members who embrace and are prepared to work tirelessly in pursuit of the Group’s aspirations. It is my belief that as a result of the team’s collective efforts, OCM is well positioned to grow and thrive in the new technology era before us. We have made the right strategic investments in the new media platforms; we have diversified, built a strong talent pool and kept a steady and unwavering focus on operational excellence. I look forward to the future with optimism, hope and pride. I implore you to build your vocabulary which will come quite naturally just from reading.” Trinidad Express Newspapers National Word Championship is in its third year and aims to support and promote literacy through the spelling competition, while providing a positive avenue for children to learn, have fun and encourage teambuilding skills and sportsmanship. PAGE 8 | JANUARY - MARCH 2016 TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO CARNIVAL 2016 Miss Point Fortin Queen 2016 Competition Patrice Williams, Cashier in the Finance Department (San Fernando Branch), Caribbean Communications Network Limited (CCN), placed third in the Miss Point Fortin Carnival Queen Competition which was held on Saturday, January 16th 2016. The One interviewed Patrice to find out more about her. The best thing about being employed with this company is the opportunity to interact with our customers and meet new people every day. It also helps me to be more diligent and disciplined, as I have to exhibit a lot of care and concentration due the nature of my job. What is the Point Fortin Carnival Queen competition all about? The Point Fortin Carnival Queen competition is about choosing the right candidate to represent the Point Fortin. It is about choosing an individual who is knowledgeable about the Borough and the Carnival festivities of the area. Who encouraged you to participate in the competition? One of my co-workers introduced me to the competition and also encouraged me to participate. My family and friends also encouraged me to open up myself to this new experience. How long did it take you to prepare for a queen competition and how difficult was the preparation? I found out about the competition about three (3) month before the competition day and I started preparation immediately. The preparation was very time consuming as I lost a lot of sleep prior to the competition. The short time in which I had to prepare was very hectic, as I had no prior experience with a competition like this. I had to compress all my training into evenings after work and on weekends. What is the most important lesson from this experience? The most important lesson from this experience is that you can do anything you put your mind to and it is always good to try new things, as it can show you the type of person you are and highlight the real potential you possess. Who is the most influential person in your life? The most influential person in my life is my mom. She is a strong, independent individual, who works very hard in all aspects of her life. In January 2016 Barbados recorded its first cases of the Zika virus and in February 2016. Soon after, in February 2016 Trinidad and Tobago recorded its first case of the Zika virus, but what is Zika? Courtesy the Office of the Ambassador, Embassy of Brazil, listed below is some information about the virus. The Zika virus is actually an arbovirus (a large group of viruses), transmitted by the bite of the mosquito, which is also the cause of the dengue fever. Zika was first identified in Brazil in April 2015. The virus received the same designation of the place of origin of its identification in 1947, after being detected in sentinel monkeys that were being used to monitor for the presence of yellow fever in the Zika forest in Uganda. How is the virus transmitted? The most frequent mode of transmission is through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Is there a vaccine against Zika? There is no vaccine against the Zika virus. What is the treatment? What are the symptoms? About 80 per cent of people infected by the Zika virus do not develop clinical manifestations, whether they are adults or children. The main symptoms are headache, low-grade fever, mild joint pain, skin rashes, itching and redness in the eyes. Other, less frequent symptoms are swelling in the body, sore throat, coughing and vomiting. Overall, the evolution of the disease is benign and the symptoms disappear spontaneously after 3-7 days. However, joint pain may persist for approximately one month. Severe and atypical forms are rare, but when they occur they may exceptionally lead to death. There is no specific treatment for Zika viral infection. The use of aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs is not recommended, due to the increased risk of bleeding complications associated with infections caused by other flavi viruses. What precautions should be taken? PREVENTION/PROTECTION • • ATTENTION • • PAGE 14 | JANUARY - MARCH 2016 Install mosquito nets on windows and doors, wear longsleeved clothing – pants and shirts—and apply insect repellent on exposed areas of the body. It is advisable to stay in places where mosquito nets or other barriers available. If you notice the presence of skin rashes, red eyes or fever, seek health care. Do not take medication or attempt any treatment on your own before consulting a doctor. ...and the Breath Breathe deeply – in and out through the nose’. ‘Take longer inhale and exhale breaths’. ‘Remember to breathe!’ These are the cues I say frequently in each yoga class. There are many physical and mental benefits of yoga such as building strength, flexibility, stress relief, meditation, helping the mind to focus. The common thread throughout these benefits is control of one’s BREATH or life-force. On average humans breathe 15-18 times a minute. The tortoise, which breathes about 4 times per minute, generally has one of the longest lifespans of any animal, and some are known to have lived longer than 150 years. There is a reason why people frequently say ‘take a deep breath’ when confronted by certain situations such as a big event, a formidable task - anything which stimulates the sympathetic nervous system (our fight or flight response) and speeds up the heart rate. I invite you to take a minute, close your eyes and slowly inhale – really fill your lungs and feel your abdomen and chest expand, now slowly exhale through your nose at the same pace as your inhale breath. Do this a few times and notice how you feel. See you on the mat! Namaste. Rita Purdeen, Instructor At present, Yoga is offered FREE OF CHARGE on Tuesdays at Express House, Port of Spain from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Interested persons are asked to contact OCM Group Corporate Services at 623-1711 x 1905 for additional information.
