The Theatre Conservatory 2007-08 Season at a Glance [Note all performances are at 7:30 p.m., except all Sundays are at 2 p.m.] Dear Patrons, Welcome to The Theatre Conservatory, Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University’s 2007-08 season. This year our season begins in October with a new musical adaptation of works of Edgar Allan Poe and concludes in May with the musical The Wild Party. Along the way we have an exciting combination of classics, contemporary dramas and challenging musical works. The O’Malley main-stage season is complemented by the season of Miller Studio Theatre workshop productions, shows that combine experimental and classical forms. One of the most significant contributions of theatre is that it opens up the world of the audience through the immediacy and intensity of the encounter with the actors and the text. The great German dramatist Bertolt Brecht wrote: “We need a type of theatre which not only releases feelings, insights, impulses possible … but employs and encourages those thoughts and feelings which help transform the field itself.” It is our hope that this year’s season of performances by The Theatre Conservatory will challenge you and inspire you to see the world around you from new perspectives, through the artistry of our student-performers. Theatre could not exist without the essential role played by you, the audience. Our productions serve as the laboratories for our studentartists who are training for professional careers as performers. We thank you for supporting them and for helping to nurture the next generation of great American actors. We look forward to welcoming you back soon … and often. Sincerely, Joel G. Fink Director of The Theatre Conservatory Associate Dean, Chicago College of Performing Arts Chicago College of Performing Arts provides professional conservatory training in theatre, musical theatre, music, and music education within the context of a university in a world-class city. An Unkindness of Ravens God’s Country By Steven Dietz From the Writings of Edgar Allan Poe October 12-13, 7 p.m. / October 14, 2 p.m. November 2-3, 7:30 p.m. / November 4, 2 p.m. An Unkindness of Ravens God’s Country Adapted and Directed by Joel G. Fink Music and Sound Score by Richard Thomas “It was many and many a year ago in a kingdom by the sea ...” Some of Poe’s most powerful works, including the lyrical poem Annabel Lee and the classics of horror, The Mask of the Red Death and The Cask of Amontillado, will be included in this stage adaptation. With his themes of jealousy, revenge and murder, Poe created dramatic images that continue to haunt the imagination with their intensity and originality. In 1998, Mr. Louis Lerner commissioned The Theatre Conservatory to create a musical version of one of his favorite poems, E. A. Poe’s Annabel Lee. This newly revised and expanded production of that work is presented in honor of the memory of Mr. Lerner and his many contributions to Chicago College of Performing Arts. Directed by Steve Scott “These are not stories. These things exist.” Adapted from court testimony, news accounts and first-person interviews, God’s Country focuses on the white-supremacist movement in the 1980s and its spread in society and through different generations. In dramatizing the forces that led up to the murder of the Denver radio-show host, Alan Berg, the playwright Steven Dietz brings dark and violent aspects of American society clearly into the spotlight. The O’Malley Theatre Box Office - (312) 341-3831 The Musical Review Starting Here, Starting Now Peer Gynt By Henrik Ibsen By Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire December 7-8, 7 p.m. / December 9, 2 p.m. February 29 - March 1, 7:30 p.m. / March 2, 2 p.m. Starting Here, Starting Now Peer Gynt Directed by Ray Frewen Musical Direction by Bonnie Shadrake “Did I think that you were springtime, It’s all vanished in the blue, Cause I don’t remember Christmas And I don’t remember you!” Directed by Sean Graney “What should a man be? Himself, is my concise reply.” Struggling with the problems of identity and life-choices, Peer Gynt travels the globe attempting to escape the confines of society and its attempts to “define” him. Like a medieval Maltby and Shire collaborated to write the hit show Closer Than Ever, as well as the Broad- “Everyman,” Peer faces a series of adventures that take him around the world. But all of his way shows Baby and Big. Earlier in their careers, in 1977, they wrote the off-Broadway dreams ultimately lead to nothing, and Peer, like an onion, is pared away only to discover review Starting Here, Starting Now. Although not a traditional “book” musical, the show there is nothing at his center. One of the greatest works by one of the world’s greatest play- chronicles every aspect of relationships from dating to divorce. Each of their songs is a wrights, Peer Gynt combines fantasy and philosophy in a magical evening of theatre. “mini-musical” of its own and their music captures the range of emotions that go along with learning to live with … or without … all of our significant others! The O’Malley Theatre Box Office - (312) 341-3831 Visions of Kerouac The Musical! The Wild Party Music and Lyrics by Andrew Lippa Story adapted from the poem by Joseph Moncure March By Martin Duberman April 11-12, 7:30 p.m. / April 13, 2 p.m. May 1-3, 7:30 p.m. / May 4, 2 p.m. Visions of Kerouac The Wild Party Directed by David Zak “Started life a sweet child believing everything beneath his father’s roof; went from that … to that mask of disgusted flesh called a face but not the face that love had hoped for ...” From Visions of Cody by Jack Kerouac Jack Kerouac’s life, from the 1940s until the 1960s, is brought to the stage through his relationships with the Beat Generation and many of the preeminent artists of his time: Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Gregory Corso and Neal Cassidy. Kerouac’s book On the Road captured many of these personalities, and in Visions of Kerouac, his own complex and compelling persona is puzzled together on the stage. Kerouac’s writings, his sexuality, his friendships and his influence on several generations of artists all form a fascinating dramatic and moving tapestry. [*Note: This production opens on a Thursday evening.] Directed by Luis Perez Musical Direction by Bonnie Shadrake “Queenie was a blonde, and her age stood still, And she danced twice a day in vaudeville.” Adapted from the book-length poem about the Jazz Era of the 1920s, The Wild Party is peopled with an unforgettable assortment of Roaring Twenties characters. The score by Andrew Lippa captures the sounds of the period and the voices of the party-goers, all living on the edge, but some not living by the next morning.
