As much as we don’t want to see Summer end, it looks and feels like it will be gone before too much longer. It has been a fun-filled summer for all of us this year, with so many events happening that it was difficult to attend them all. Our community is full of organizations and groups, along with school children, and fund raising clubs that keep events of all kinds available for all of us to attend and enjoy. These events serve an important purpose, in that it brings everyone closer together and also gets us out of our daily routine, making our lives a little more interesting. It will not be too much longer until our schools are again in session and we will see those yellow school buses running up and down the roads, so watch for our children as they board, or depart from the buses. And, of course, we will have more events to attend at our schools. So, let’s support the kids by attending their sports and school events. Hopefully, this will help the students to become responsible adult citizens when they finish their time with school and are out on their own, creating communities that are safe and full of happy people. However, we still have quite a few events coming before the end of the year. One of the largest events has just finished; the Airshow of the Cascades and it was a huge success. A big ‘Thank You’ to all the Volunteers that helped to make it the best show yet! Another fast growing and very successful event that just finished was the Crawdad Festival in Culver. This year was their largest turn out of parade entries and spectators along with serving over 700 pound of Crawdads! Upcoming events are the Metolius Spike & Rail; Halloween Merchant’s Costume Contest; Kiwanis’ Octoberfest; MAC Dash; Buff Booster’s Crab Feed; Veteran’s Day Parade; Canyon Rumble Frozen Half; Chamber’s Christmas Lights Parade & Santa, just to name a few. There is always something going on in Jefferson County! The upcoming Annual Chamber Community Awards Banquet on September 15th will be held at the Erickson Aircraft Collection. Our theme for this year is “Celebrating 70 Years of Water”, recognizing the value of the North Unit Irrigation District’s water distribution system to our local agriculture industry. We are anticipating a large attendance surrounding this year’s event and our table sponsors will be theming their table around water. A presentation will be given by NUID representatives showing photos highlighting the project in the early days to present. My preliminary viewing of some of these photos astounded me in the complexity and scope of building the canal system. From your nominations, our Community Awards Banquet showcases and honor the people from our communities who have been chosen to receive awards for their dedication in five categories. Which are: Volunteer of the Year, Business of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Public Servant of the Year and Community Champion of the Year. Be sure to make your reservation to attend the banquet, so you will be able to congratulate the folks that are honored.
