April Showers bring May Flowers!!! Or so they
say. April has been an absolutely gorgeous month with
temperatures near 80 degrees several days. Trees are
in full bloom. This time of the year is one of my
favorite with all the fresh green foliage. But don’t let
this weather deceive you, I’m sure there are a few
more below freezing nights and maybe even a snow
shower or two before summer is officially here.
Before you know it May will be behind us and school will be out for
the summer. Proud parents will boast as their once youngsters will be
graduating from high schools and colleges alike as young adults. Time
flies by so quickly, it seems like only yesterday that we were camping
with our 2 year old grandchildren, now they too are graduating from
high school.

It takes more than just the Chamber of Commerce to meet the overall goal of
Enhancing the Economic Vitality and Livability of our Communities. Sure, we
represent you on various boards and task forces, oversee, assist and manage events,
advocate business and community concerns locally and at the state level and then
falling in place as we are called upon throughout the year. It is what we are charged
with and enjoy doing so.
We are not an all-inclusive reason or the major contributor to all the enhancements
and successes we see within our community. It takes other organizations such as our
churches, service organizations, after school clubs, booster clubs, aquatic & recreation districts and
the list goes on. All of them utilizing volunteers to serve on their boards and in the trenches to make
things happen. Typically, we know who they are because we are in association with them, they are
our neighbors, go to the same events or we have been recruited to help.
Then there are those parties, not as visible, who elects to make something happen. Like Austin
Cooper. In February, we met regarding her interest/drive to enlarge the Community Clean Up this
coming Saturday. After a few more meetings (some with her son, Jackson, playing next to my desk),
phone conversations and emails, Austin had the tools and information she needed to run with it. And
boy has she, collaborating with the City of Madras, running/cycling groups, local business
sponsorship, organizations and volunteers.
When you see all the groups, sponsors and the volunteers when they are working or when they are
at the volunteer appreciation picnic in Sahalee Park, thank them.
On behalf of our community for your leadership and engagement, Thank You Austin.

located somewhere in or close to Jefferson County. We may or may not, give a
hint each time, where the business or place is located.
Our purpose is that you are more aware of what and where our member businesses are located. When you look at the photo in the newsletter and recognize
the place of business, call us with the name and location of the business or place
featured.
The first 10 caller’s names will be put in a pot & the winner will be drawn from
those names for the free business card ad in next month’s Newsletter.
We will announce the winner in our next month’s newsletter.
Our “Wandering Mystery Camera Clip” business this month is one of
the safest places to keep your finances handy, where the staff is willing
to help you and they are very friendly ................hmmm???

The idea for a Madras Saturday Market began in 2003, when local
business man, Bill Houts and his wife Helen got several other people
together for some planning sessions. These early planners, along with
Bill and Helen, included Jerry and Dorothy Ramsey, Al and Jan Kozak, Bill
McChesney, Ann Snyder, rancher and Sandy Monchamp-Cloud, farmer.
Following several months of work, the first Market was held in
Friendship Park, (where City Hall is now located, and where the new
Courthouse is nearing completion,) on the first Saturday in June of 2004.
This first Market featured a single produce vendor, meat vendor and
baked goods vendor and several vendors offering arts and crafts.
In two years’ time a move was made to Sahalee Park that offered green grass and shade with room to
grow, and still was within walking distance of downtown.
About 2009, the original organizers retired and the local non-profit Board of Directors was elected by
the vendor membership, and a Market manager hired.
Over time, the Market has grown and there are now 40-45 vendors during the summer, with an average
of 20 vendors each Saturday. Also added after a few years, has been a Christmas Market held at the
Fairgrounds, with generally more than 40 vendors participating.
What can you anticipate at the Market this year? Visitors will find 6-8 vendors of locally grown produce
and meats. You will also find berries and fruits trucked in from the Willamette Valley. Not only that, but
if you want to get an early start for your own garden, you can find hot house started plants and shrubs.
Arts and crafts generally include wooden toys and carvings and a wide variety of locally crafted items.
Once a month you will find OSU Extension Nutritionists cooking up a storm with tasty samples and easy
recipes. If you are a participant in the SNAP program, we have also added a “Double Up Food Bucks”
program that will allow you to buy even more locally produced fruits and vegetables.
You can also enjoy several hours of free music entertainment by local musicians. A grant from the
Jefferson County Cultural Coalition enables us to bring in 14 different musical groups from Central
Oregon and they provide home grown music.
Beginning June 4th, 2016 and running until September 17th, 2016, you will find us in Sahalee Park from
9:00am to 2:00pm. Stop by and listen to the music, sample the products and just visit with your
neighbors.
