The following is a brief interview of David Miller & the two men who guided him on his extraordinary experience and inspiring journey as he overcame obstacles, endured the struggles, and conquered the ‘Strong Warriors Challenge 5K obstacle course.’ ‘Assist Wisconsin Conquers the Strong Warriors Challenge’ Will Miessner (Far Left), David Miller (center), John Miller- David’s dad (Far Right), Paul Roberts (Standing Behind David) What is Assist Wisconsin? “Assist Wisconsin is a non-profit organization committed to replacing obstacles with opportunities for individuals with disabilities. “We have two main focuses right now, first to open up the natural beauty and attractions of our area here in Wisconsin with exceptional families so they can enjoy them together. Our second focus is to equip our state parks with adaptive equipment and volunteers to facilitate handicap accessible adventures for these families”, said Will Meissner founder of Assist Wisconsin. David tells us a little bit about your self? “My name is David Miller. I am 26 years old. I was born in Dayton, Ohio, but I currently reside here in the Wisconsin area.” David, prior to the race what was going through your mind and what emotions were you feeling? “Before the race I was just trying to get my mind right. I thought about all the training that Paul gave me in the past few months and how far I had come. Within the few short weeks prior to the race, I had learned a lot about myself. I learned what I was capable of and I also gained a lot more confidence”, said David. What did you think and how did you feel as you were going through the obstacle course? “The course was a lot harder than I anticipated. But with the training that Paul had put me through I knew that I could do it. I just had to dig deep. There were times during the event that in the back of my mind I wanted to give up. But having Paul and Will there with me was a huge help. They kept pushing me and motivating me to keep going. They brought things out of me that I didn’t know I was capable of. If it wasn’t for them, honestly, I probably would not have been able to finish the whole thing”, said David. So, David, tell us how you felt after you finished the race? “After I crossed the finish line, I looked back at everything we just did. It took us nearly 3 hours to do the course, but I knew we had done something huge. We worked together as a team and motivated each other to complete the obstacle course. It was one of the best accomplishments that I had ever done. Having 2 of my really good friends there with me at the end made it that much sweeter.” Paul, David credits you heavily with training him and helping him prepare for the race. He also said you helped bring out the best in him which allowed him to dig deep, and push to the finish line. How does this make you feel and what was going through your mind when you crossed the finish line? “Every day, us able body people, take the little things for granted. David really showed me the true meaning of heart that day. I will always remember the Strong Warriors Challenge event as a day that changed my life forever and I’ll never forget the courage and strength it took David to finish the race. It just proves anything is possible with determination and a strong spirit”, said Paul Roberts, David’s trainer and friend. What is the future for Assist Wisconsin? “The future is bright. We are working on some very important partnerships in our area that will help us grow rapidly. Growth is measured for us by the lives impacted, therefore growth in our infrastructure is essential. We are looking to build and grow our internship program to be operating at full capacity by spring 2015”, said Will. How can people support or help Assist Wisconsin? “People can show support by visiting our website at www.assistwi.org and this will put them in contact with volunteer and donation opportunities. They can support via social media by liking us on Facebook at Assst WI and follow us on Twitter @AssistWI.”, said Will Meissner founder of Assist Wisconsin.
