IT’S FEBRUARY... WHICH MEANS THAT IT’S
almost Beanpot Tournament time… so that
means that it’s almost time to see some of
the best former Valley Jr Warriors in action!
in the top 20 nationally and all four received
top-20 votes in the most recent USCHO poll.
When the list of Hobey Baker Memorial Trophy finalists were announced, it was no
surprise that two VJW alums were among the nation’s best. Ryan Fitzgerald, a sophomore
at Boston College, and Union College sophomore Mike Vecchione have been nominated
for the 2015 Hobey Baker Memorial Award and you can help them earn college hockey’s
top honor by voting online through March 8.
All four programs feature the nation’s top
talent and the Warriors players fit that bill.
Fitzgerald, a sophomore standout for the Eagles, played for the VJW Junior A squad and
earned EJHL Rookie of the Year honors. He was also a two-time Massachusetts Super 8
Tournament Champion at Malden Catholic.
Indeed, the 63rd edition of the Beanpot
Tournament kicked off on February 3rd (one
day later than planned due to Monday’s
storm) at the TD Garden and the Valley Jr Warriors program as well represented once again.
The first semifinal game featured Boston
University and Harvard. Colin Blackwell
and Devin Tringale of the Crimson faced off
against the Terriors’ Nick Roberto.
Vecchione epitomizes what the VJW development philosophy is all about. After all,
he came to the Warriors as a Squirt Minor and played all of his youth hockey with the
program! He now centers Union College’s top line and helped lead his Dutchmen team
its first NCAA Championship title during the 2013-14 season.
This annual tradition features four of the
top Boston-area teams in what has become
the ultimate battle for Boston’s hockey bragging rights.
In the second semifinal game, Noah
Hanifin, Ryan Fitzgerald and Brendan Silk
attempted to lead Boston College to a sixth
straight title.
This first phase of fan balloting for the Hobey Baker Memorial Trophy will run now through
March 8, 2015. Phase two of fan balloting will begin on March 19 from the list of Top Ten
Hobey Baker finalists. The fans’ vote accounts for a full 1 percent of the total ballot in each
phase in selecting this year’s award recipient.
And for the second year in a row, nearly 10
percent of the rostered players from Boston
College, Boston University, Northeastern University and Harvard University have suited up
for the Valley Jr Warriors’ program either as a
longtime youth or Junior A player.
Standing in their way was a formidable foe
in Northeastern and Husky standouts Brendan Collier, Gus Harms and Jake Schechter.
Awarded annually to college hockey’s top player, the Hobey Baker’s highly popular
fan-voting opened on Wednesday, January 7. You can cast your vote today online at
HobeyBaker.com.
It is an astounding figure considering that
three of the teams – #3 Boston University, #6
Harvard and #11 Boston College – are ranked
When the semifinal games came to an
end, it was Northeastern and Boston University that earned a spot in February 9th’s
finals.
