 General
Presentation
The Alsace Region includes two départements: Bas-Rhin (Lower Rhine) (top) and HautRhin (Upper Rhine) (bottom), named after the River Rhine, which borders the region
along its full length. Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine are now also merged into
a single large region, to be known as Grand Est (Greater East), ACAL, or perhaps even
under another name. The new region is situated along the borders of several European
countries: Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany and Switzerland.

Unterlinden Museum > COLMAR
Today, the extended Unterlinden Museum rivals the greatest international museums.
Under the aegis of internationally renowned firm HERZOG & De MEURON, the works (cost
€ 43,917 including tax) have doubled its exhibition area, restored the former Dominican
Convent and created an area for contemporary art.
The project comprises two main buildings on either side of Place Unterlinden: on one side,
the mediaeval cloister with the chapel - home to the famous Isenheim Altarpiece - and on
the other a new wing approximately the same size as the chapel and which, together with
the former public-baths building, forms a second courtyard. Both buildings are connected
by an underground passageway comprising 3 exhibition rooms.
DP ADT GB 2016 _Mise en page 1 02/02/16 10:49 Page7
T
he quality of the contents is on a par with that
of the architecture. As well as world-famous mediaeval
and Renaissance works such as the Isenheim Altarpiece
by Matthias Grünewald and Niklaus von Hagenau
(1512-1516), the collections include drawings,
engravings, photographs, paintings, and sculpture.
The modern art collection began to expand in the
1960s. The former public baths are also used as a venue
for events organised by the museum or private
receptions.

OPENING
Luggage Museum > HAGUENAU
l
Apri
2016
N
ext April, the City of Haguenau will be
inaugurating its new Luggage Museum (Musée du
Bagage) in the former Banque de France building. Most
of the items on display are taken from the remarkable
collection - one of a kind in Europe - constituted by
Jean-Philippe and Marie Roland, which includes six
hundred trunks, suitcases and other items of luggage
of various origins and in various styles, dating from the
18th century to the 1960s. Not only do the exhibits
showcase the know-how of their manufacturers and
creators; they also reflect changing modes of transport
(stagecoach, train, ocean liner, aeroplane). Some pieces
are unique, in particular those from luxury design
houses such as Louis Vuitton, Goyard and Moynat.
The permanent collection will be complemented by
a series of themed exhibitions.

OPENING
CIP Point d’Orgues > MARMOUTIER
l
Apri
2016
A
lsace is renowned for its pipe organs, not
least due to local law (the Concordat), which organises
and ensures the financial support of Catholic, Protestant and Jewish worship in Alsace and the Moselle area:
- out of France’s 7,000 pipe organs, 1,230 are located
in Alsace,
- one in three organ builders works in Alsace,
- 180 of the instruments in Alsace are classified as
historic monuments.
For all these reasons, a 1 200 m² Heritage Interpretation
Centre dedicated to pipe organs and flutes - both wind
instruments - will be opening in Marmoutier. Known as
“Point d’Orgues” (the French name for the fermata),
the CIP will rely on a scientific, digital and electroacoustic
approach to introduce the public to pipe organs by
means of a variety of sensory workshops, and will also
guide visitors through Alsace’s exceptionally rich
heritage in this area. Special emphasis will be placed on
the 1710 Silbermann organ, the oldest in Alsace,
located in Marmoutier’s former abbey church.

Major exhibitions at the STRASBOURG museums
왎 “Strasbourg 1200-1230,
the Gothic Revolution“
Musée de l’Œuvre Notre-Dame
Arts du Moyen Age
> 16 October 2015 to 14 February 2016
A part of the celebration of the Strasbourg Cathedral
Millennium (2015), this exhibition documents the arrival
of the Gothic style in Strasbourg in the mid-13th
century. The construction of the south transept of the
Cathedral was the first exemplar of the new style in the
Germanic lands. The resulting carvings and sculptures,
in particular the statues of the Church and the
Synagogue as well as the Pillar of Angels, are among
the most famous masterworks of Western mediaeval
art. This exhibition has gathered many scattered works
from European public and private collections which
bear witness to this artistic revolution (sculpture,
stained glass, illuminated manuscripts, metal artefacts,
etc.) and mentions the sources as well as the influence
of this exceptional workshop.
왎 “Baroque Fervours - Homage to
Othon Kaufmann and François Schlageter“
Musée des Beaux-Arts > 21 May to 29 August 2016
This exhibition is a tribute to two collectors from
Strasbourg: Othon Kaufmann (1905-1993) and François
Schlageter (1904-1997), who left seventeen 17th- and
18th-century Italian paintings to the Strasbourg
Museum of Fine Arts (and who also made major donations
to the Louvre). Both men are celebrated and their
collection is augmented by works belonging to
Strasbourg collectors who were close to them and
shared their taste for Baroque painting.
왎 The Last Dance - The Macabre Imagination
in the Graphic Arts“ dans les arts graphiques“
Galerie Heitz / Palais Rohan > 21 May to 29 August 2016
Associated with the fear of death, the macabre has
featured in the graphic arts since the end of the 15th
century. It underwent specific developments in the
Rhine Valley, inspired by the primitive Dominican frescoes
in Basel and Strasbourg, and was popularised by the
development of printing.
In a similar vein: “Danses Macabres” at the Tomi Ungerer Museum from 21 May to 29 August. In 1983, Tomi
Ungerer, inspired by Hans Holbein, produced a book
exclusively dedicated to the subject, Rigor Mortis.

n the late 19th and early 20th centuries,
the fastest-developing modes of transport were ocean
